Is there a rap fan out there who didn't like "The Message"? It took rap in an entirely new direction: while others were content to ride the "Double Dutch Bus" down to the disco, the Furious Five spoke out about social decay. The chorus of "The Message" ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head / Sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under") describes the effect of Reaganomics in ways that Dan Rather never could. Of course, Grandmaster Flash and company weren't against partying. In fact, they cut some of the best party tracks in the genre's history ("Freedom," "The Birthday Party"), along with some battle raps ("Step Off," "Showdown") to complete the package. Copyright restrictions probably kept the beat-edit classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" off the track listing. Still, one glaring omission isn't reason enough not to pick this up. --Todd Inoue

AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR RAP OLD SCHOOLER'S. DELIVERY TIMEFRAME IS OUTSTANDING.

5 out of 5 stars Sure-fire Collector's Item.......2007-03-12

I can't imagine a rap fan out there who would argue that Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five were not one of the best of all-time. Recognized as one of the pioneers of rap, particularly for turning rap into mainstream music, Grandmaster Flash should be respected for his work and ability to work with multitude of talents. "The Message" has to be regarded as one of the most popular rap songs of all time, and possibly in any type of music. That hit has been re-made, mixed, and sampled so much that even youngsters that were born after the hit was recorded will recognize the sounds. "Step Off" was also a hit during the break-dance era of the '80's, and many fans found that song more enjoyable than given credit for. Speaking of enjoyable hits, who didn't enjoy "Beat Street" (from the movie Beat Street) back in those days? It has to be regarded as one of the most fun rap songs to memorize, and "New York, New York" is another one that many enjoy rapping themselves. "White Lines" is a hit that many initially had no idea what the meaning of the song was supposed to be, but many figured it out after a while, once drug usage in urban areas of the country became heavily exposed to the mainstream audiences. Original lyrics, street-cred, hip beats/sounds, and strong social messages... Nothing seems to be missing in this compilation. If you like old school, make sure you add this one!

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of an Era .......2006-07-18

If you consider yourself a hip-hip fan (espically if you listen to most of todays garbage pop fake hip-hop, this is a must that you have this in your collection. Grandmaster Flash was one of the pioneers of hip-hop and even though this collection of songs was taken from the early 80's, it still holds up with its rawness. Its a shame that hip-hop has reached what it is today and the just arent enough hip-hop artist that do it just for the love of the music. Its a cruel world today in the music bizz, as most of the hip-hop artist of today are creations of some billion dollar record company and signs them to be the next MTV music hit. If you want raw, no nonsense hip-hop from the early days before artist cared about being #1 on TRL, this is a great place to start. ENJOY

5 out of 5 stars Grandmaster cuts faster.......2005-11-01

Extraordinary music. Listen to what DJ GM Flash puts together: the grooves are so carefully fashioned and leap out at you time and again. In particular I've never heard a funkier slap bass sound - ever.

And let's talk MCs. Why don't rappers these days attack the mike anymore like these guys did? Are they afraid it's not cool to be energetic? Well no wonder no one dances to rap music anymore. But when you listen to this - the grooves and the punchy vocals - you will definitely move your body.

Only problem is: when you get hold of any other Hip Hop after this you'll be disappointed that the DJs don't cut as fast and clean as this Grandmaster.

5 out of 5 stars The Quintessential 'Best Of' Collection.......2005-06-14

Like many of you, I've only heard "The Message" prior to purchasing this incredible 'best of' collection. As you probably know, Grandmaster Flash and company were recording the most popular rap songs in the early 80s. Most of these songs are stunningly wild and fun party jams. But in 1982, they released "The Message", which is considered to be the first rap song to be pushed from a novelty party jam, to a chilling prophecy, featuring effective social commentary. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five built a rock solid bridge for Run-D.M.C. to step in, and push their "Message" even further, which eventually brought the hardcore edge to hip-hop. Whether you know it or now, their presence is still felt to this day, since hip-hop hasn't made that drastic of a leap since Run-D.M.C. (that's quite debatable). It also helped that the production was flawlessly perfect. It featured dub, electro, and R&B that was sure to hook nearly every listener of urban radio.

So if you're in the same boat as me, you're probably asking yourself, "Are their any other good songs from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five?". Well, the answer is yes. This is probably the best single disc best of collection you'll find from these guys. These are long infectious party jams. Many of which include the artillery of a large emcee battle, such as the epic Furious Five / Sugarhill Gang collaboration of "Showdown". A song I didn't think I'd like given the title, "The Birthday Party", actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Although, "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" would have to be one of the most under-appreciated rap songs of all time. It's got one of the most clever attacks on the compilation, and will surely please any and all hip-hop lovers. They do tackle a bit more social commentary on tracks like "New York New York" and "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)". The latter features hard hitting lyrics about the dangers of drug use, and probably the most effective lyrics in it's time, given the subject matter. The only knock I have on the album is the first track, "Step Off Megamix". It's merely a "megamix" of their most popular songs thrown into one track (recorded in 1994). It would have been nicer if they would have thrown in a old-school jam up front, or at least put this track at the end, since the original versions shine much brighter throughout the remainder of the album.

Overall, if you're into old-school rap, this is a great listen. It's chalk-full of groundbreaking historical material. If you're at all interested in the evolution of rap, from the pre-Run-D.M.C. days, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. One could only be happier about the completeness of this collection.

The deeply touching beauty of Singh Kaur's voice is a rare gift and she recorded this extraordinary music as her final offering to her fans. Produced by Gary Stadler (Fairy NightSongs, Fairy Heart Magic) and featuring artfully sensitive keyboard orchestrations by Raphael (Music to Disappear Into) and special guest Lisa Lynne on Celtic harp, "This Universe" will deepen and enhance your yoga, the healing arts or meditation.

5 out of 5 stars Enchantment.......2007-04-03

This music is so exquisite it brings tears of joy to my eyes. I have never been so moved. Wonderful for meditation or just relaxed enjoyment. A singer with perfect pitch and an enormously talented composer. This beautiful music will take you into presence.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2007-03-10

Singh Kaur's heavenly music is the perfect antitdote to a busy and stress-filled day. I easily come back home, to my most shining self, when I listen to her other-worldly CD.

5 out of 5 stars Equisite and Filled Eternal Bliss.......2005-10-12

Just exquisite! I love Singh Kaur from her Crimson Series releases and absolutely adored her previous collaboration with Gary Stadler on "Fairy NightSongs". But this new release fills me with such joy and wonder and opens my heart in a way that I have never experienced from music before. Singh Kaur's voice is radiant and pierces my soul with it's devotional passion and tenderness. I feel blessed to have found this magnificent piece of music. Thank you, thank you, thank you Gary Stadler for bringing Singh Kaur's final musical gift to us all. Many Blessings.

5 out of 5 stars All Pain And Sorrow Depart.......2005-09-14

As I've mentioned elsewhere I have a deep, visceral reaction when I hear Singh Kaur's voice. Suddenly I stop for a moment, as the wise say, my mind opens, and I remember that the problem isn't me, the problem is my reaction to the problem. This dates back to my first discovery of her series of chants done on the independent ?Invincible label with Kim Robertson on harp. This Crimson collection, her final recording, is the closest thing to healing music that I have ever heard. Unfortunately, the set has to be sought out or ordered, and many people simply have never heard what is one of the most powerful voices in new age music.

I don't know if I can put my finger on what exactly is it about her singing that does this. The Spark in the Night, the first cut on this album is a reworking of an old melody of hers. The simplicity of her voice, the purity of her tone fits right into the music. As her singing matured, her voice gained coloration, and this song works not simply as and easy melody, but it reaches the listener emotionally as well.

Most of the album (43 minutes) is spent on the title piece, this universe. Combining wit Gary Stadler, Lisa Lynne, and several others, it is meditation music perfection. While anything of this length is going to be repetitious, Singh Kaur manages to vary dynamics, rhythm and color so that even the repetition is soothing. This is no small accomplishment in a world where many people think that meditation music should be electronic choirs droning over electronic strings. Singh Kaur is never hackneyed.

Rather than drone on about Kaur's talents, I suggest that, if you are looking for the narrow path to inner quiet, you stop a moment and listen for yourself.

Kevin Costner, Robin Wright Penn, and Paul Newman star in this romantic tale about a sailor who dispatches love letters to sea in memory of his late wife. Just as the love letters are viewed as among the most touching ever written, the soundtrack is equally sentimental--16 tracks that evoke wistful days spent staring out of windows pining for lost love. Edwin McCain delivers Diane Warren's surprisingly modest "I Could Not Ask for More," a song written specifically for the movie. Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan turn soft and spooky with their whispery "Carolina" and "I Love You," respectively. Sinéad Lohan and Beth Nielsen Chapman backlight their middle-of-the-road sensibilities with dance beats. Hootie & the Blowfish's "Only Lonely" is far closer to country music (Glen Campbell-style) than country artist Faith Hill's "Let Me Let Go." Gabriel Yared contributes the instrumental title track as well as two other pieces of overswelling movie music. Redefines the term mellow. --Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars BEWARE ONE IMPORTANT SONG MISSING - WARNING SPOILER!.......2007-03-01

I have both of the Message in a Bottle cds. They are each filled with wonderful music. Unfortunately my absolute favorite song from the movie, "Beyond the Blue" a duet by EmmyLou Harris and Patty Griffin is NOT on either cd. Beware!

It seems I am forever tracking down an errant song. Oftentimes the song is a critical heartbeat moment of the film - as in this case. Why such an important song is missing confounds me.

If you are considering this cd because you want THAT CRITICAL SONG played during the montage showing Theresa and Garret finding their lives hopeful after years of despair and loneliness, you won't find it on either of the Message in a Bottle cds. You need to add to your cart the soundtrack for the movie, Where the Heart is. That beautiful song also played at the very end of that movie AND THOSE FOLKS had the sense to put it ON THEIR SOUNDTRACK! I have not found it on any of EmmyLou Harris' or Patty Griffin's cds. Maybe it was a licensing thing, I don't know... I don't really care. Just figured I would offer a heads up and a helpful hint!

2 out of 5 stars Sappy & commercial, slick & subpar.......2002-08-19

A couple nice tunes. Overall not worth buying. You won't listen to the entire album more than twice. You won't need too, it ain't worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A PERFECT 10.0.......2002-02-08

If I could give this a perfect 10 rating I would. I loved this CD with it's mixture of beautiful vocals, especially the rarely heard "Carolina" by Sheryl Crow, and instrumentals so much that I purchased the Original Motion Picture Score as soon as it became available and I'd rate that a perfect 10 as well. I never go anywhere without them.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful !!!.......2002-01-11

I happen to buy a lot of Movie Soundtracks and I can say that is one of my all time favorites. Great ensemble better than the movie, in fact I liked it so much more that once I got the soundtrack I appreciated the movie more. There are so many songs on this CD that I can't possibly list them all but I can say that if you enjoy soundtracks that make the movie you will not be dissapointed in this one. I must also mention that the some of the songs are tear jerkers so BEWARE and have your box of kleenex available. Some of the artists are also on "Anywhere but here" and "Pratical Magic"

5 out of 5 stars I Truly Was Sooo Touched by this CD.......2001-12-18

It's a mixture of various artists with 'A Message In A Bottle'. It soothed my Soul to No End. I just Love the emotions one feels when listening to this Touching CD. And Being In Love, I could hardly resist The Inspiration I felt from the Depth of Such Passion. Music can be such a moving experience, something our every day life seems to take away. Emotion. I had to cry when I heard 'One More Time', 'I Love You' and 'Let Me Let Go'. I just couldn't resist the depth it took me and yet Lifted me into Inspiration. Yes All Music has an Appreciation, but this one has 'A Delight To The Senses' that is unbelievable. It's A Must Have. You Could Almost Fly...I think I did ,.) Oh soo Very Touching..buy IT. Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah Chin

this cd is pure magic...almost 20 great christmas songs on one cd sung by the voice of an angel herself..there may be a few mixed reviews by some people who must be opera voice teachers because there is nothing wrong with this cd...it is flawless....charlotte's soaring vocals, the beautiful orchestra and background singers, the whole cd has the christmas feel to it..."o come all ye faithfull" has to be heard to be believed...it is breathtaking...i love charlottes take on "winter wonderland" and "ding dong merrily on high" ..made me want to go dance in the snow or something.....she hits every note beautifully..buy this cd...i bought it back in 2000 and have listened to it at every Christmastime since or Christmas doesnt feel the same.

Charlotte Church has done it again! She is extremely talented. Even if she was 25 when she put this out, she'd be amazing. But she was only 14-15 years old when she recorded this! Beautiful. This album has great choral accompaniments and fabulous orchestra arrangements. It is a little on the high side in certain songs, but it still sounds amazing. I love her voice.

This CD speaks to the heart. Fantastic, such talent. John Trudell is a true word weaver.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual food for mind , heart and soul.......2004-04-02

I discovered John Trudell with this album and I deeply fell in love with this man. When I heard these album's songs for the first time, I was definitely hooked and deeply moved. I can't help listening to this cd again and again...The music, beautiful blues, mixed with traditional Native American voice and music, and THIS VOICE, John Trudell's voice - deep, beautiful voice which send vibrations and thrills through all my being. Everyone who hear such a voice can't help being under a spell.
And then THE WORDS, such words as "My heart doesn't hurt anymore, but my soul does. Maybe that's what soules are for, to take the hurt the heart can't take." And then THE MAN behind this voice and behind these words...

I wanted to know more about this artist, and then I went back through his discography and discovered more about the man too. John Trudell speack about things which can't leave people cold.

As a woman, a mother and an human being this man touched me,deeply...mind, heart and soul. Please, listen to his voice, please listen to his "spoken words", his music. John Trudell is such an artist, such a man, such a treasure for the humanity. I wish everybody in the world could open his mind and his heart to this man's words.

PS: It's the same review bellow, but I re-wrote it because a lot of grammatical mistakes!! I am afraid everyone has noticed that English isn't my native language. But I was so eager to share my feelings about this album that I haven't noticed the wrong words I used and the mistakes I wrote. But I wasn't wrong about my feelings, and the "power"of John Trudell's voice and songs.

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of Sanity in an Insane World.......2002-08-15

I recently purchased this CD 'Bone Days' and what can I say? A superlative compilation of music, lyrics, spoken words and song. Highly intelligent and deeply, deeply profound. A delight to the senses. An emotional rollercoaster. Happiness, inspiration, sadness, anger, despair. As I write this review I am actually listening to this very CD!

I would like to conclude this review by expressing my gratitude and appreciation to John T, Angelina Jolie and the complete 'cast and crew' who wrote, compiled and produced this exceptionally fine and highly enjoyable album. Five hundred years plus and society, 'at large' seemingly and tragically remains very blind and extremely deaf to the Wisdom and Knowledge being shared so generously, with us, by Native individuals such as John Trudell. Yes, indeed, John "live and learn are the Seasons...."

5 out of 5 stars To the Bone.......2002-04-06

Again John Trudell cuts to the bone with this new album. He has been my hero for decades and each time I hear his words they still have power to move me. I cry, I get angry and I am deeply moved by this man who has touched the gods and come back with a message for us. I think anyone can relate to the expressions he shares with us. Love, happiness, blues, anger and fleeting joy. As in the title track of Bone Days " The great search for truth, every meaning has a meaning, Dark and light have their reason, Live and learn are the seasons."
His songs of love are exquisite. Like "Takes my breath" leave me feeling. . .

5 out of 5 stars It Wasn't My Idea to Dance.......2007-03-02

This is a monumental re-release, the sonics are much improved and the scope and expanse of the talent revealed in glorious technicolor. Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood are a human jukebox, channeling everything from Beatles pop, pyschedelia, Elvis, sitars, Led Zep riffs, lush Brian Wilson harmonies, straight-on rock, Phil Spector -- you name it -- all tied up in a fantastic bow.

The inclusion of several strong bonus tracks -- singles and b-sides released by the Move during this time frame, including the anthem "Do Ya"-- round out what is a spectacular re-release and one of the better records of the decade.

5 out of 5 stars ~ MESSAGE FROM BENNY HILL COUNTRY ~.......2007-01-18

ROY WOOD PERFORMS: BENNY HILL AND THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION (including Jeff Lynne with the every great rock artist you ever knew or loved orchestra). Somewhere in season three of the original Benny episodes, he comes out as Roy Wood in his ultimate uber hippie imitation (hair, beard and all), performing a funny musical skit. Now I shall forever associate this album with him since images like that never give up your captive memory cells. THANKS BENNY!

This remaster is very enjoyable with many extras, released (singles, etc.) and unreleased (outtakes). The music covers every imaginable influence from the then burgeoning rock scene. Acid-rock phasey-crunchy guitars, heavy-trebly Rick bass pickings and funky hard-hitting drums cross with surf harmonies, electric folk/country and kooky doo-wop throwbacks. It's ALL mixed up in a pre-ELO orchestra of comedic madness - quite funny actually, and very experimental (they really change it up with each song). Everyone who loves rock 'n' roll will find many things to latch on to and enjoy for the long run - It's all a pleasant trip (Darth's review above does a great job on the song by song). Some of the song passages and writing/arranging are unbelievably adept at capturing the era's stream-of-consciousness higher strivings (played out in the best bands), but then switching to slapstick absurdity like the Ben Crawley Steel Co. song and a couple of others (HEY, maybe Roy and Benny were actually good friends??? That would explain a few things).

I am not well-informed enough about this band to give technical details, band history and whatnot, but my general FEELING for the band and this album is ANOTHER GREAT ONE from these guys! The influence from The Move seems to be far more widespread than many ever thought with all that was going on back then. Humor, good musicianship and creative exploration make this a full five sitar attraction to my mind (with over 75 minutes of musical mayhem that includes a juicy booklet full of interest) ~ Peace ~

5 out of 5 stars Move on over for the 2nd best album by The Move.......2006-11-20

While "Shazam" tends to be my favorite Move album, "Message from the Country" occupies a firm place in my heart as well. The last Move album and truly first ELO album "Message from the Country" has been remastered and while the sonics aren't ideal (Peter Mew tends to lean a bit too heavily on Sonic Solutions "No Noise" hiss reduction and also glossed over the original master recordings flaws a bit too much for my taste here)this is probably one of the better sounding reissues of the album (particularly when compared to "Great Move" the anthology that included this album plus the singles recorded for EMI--that version mixed up the original running order of the album and didn't sound all that great).

We get the original album plus five single sides and a version of "Don't Mess Me Up" stripped down to the vocals, "The Words of Aaron" with additional woodwind overdubs and an alternate take of "Do Ya" with "My Marge" mysteriously tagged on at the end (although it's not mentioned on the CD at all and the running time is curiously states it runs 4:20 when with "My Marge" it runs around 7 minutes).

Liner notes includes brief comments from Lynne, Wood and Bevan discussing the album. Also we get an extensive discussion of the recording of the album and a brief history of the band. It's not a bad reissue it just could sound better.

3 out of 5 stars Peter Mew has improved but not on this release.......2006-10-14

While not as scintillating hard rock as Looking On or Shazam, this is still one killer collection of tunes, esp. the Roy Wood songs. Funny thing is, on the ELO guy's tunes, you can hear the smarmy production that ruined future Harrison and Petty productions coming into bloom. He must be a hell of a nice guy. Otherwise, why would any artist want his gooey fingerprints smearing their art? That said, the album is still miles better than anything Wood or the ELO guy have done since. The biggest drawback is Peter Mew's mastering, which emphasizes the digital realm's tendency towards shrillness and a thin sound that wears and tears on the ears. Mew and the ELO guy have a lot in common. But then again, the price is right. So, I say go for it. Pick it up and enjoy. Just don't expect any analogue delights.

    2 out of 5 stars Awful Remastering!!!.......2006-05-26

It is unfortunate that such amazing music gets such heavy handed remastering. Peter Mew (Abbey Road mastering engineer) has once again smothered another remaster with noise reduction until it chirps like an MP3. The sound is boomy and closed off.

I'm grateful to have The Move on CD once again but I wish a more competent remastering engineer was employed. When's Peter Mew going to retire?

The Dale Warland Singers make their debut on Gothic with a beautiful new Christmas CD, featuring imaginative arrangements of carols from around the world. The sound is incomparable!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-19

To anyone who appreciates choral music, or even some of you who only like to listen to it during the holidays, this is the album for you. The music is so familiar, but so aesthetically pleasing to listen to. The choir sounds clear and majestic from the clear sounds of the basses to the beautiful pings of the sopranos. Forget the garbbled sounds of Choirs with people who think that singing in Forte the whole way through is beautiful. This is angelic, yet very fun to listen to. Enjoyment for the whole family. 5 Stars

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2005-12-02

This CD is worth buying for the track Prepare the Way alone. All the tracks are amazing, but that one is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dale Warland.......2003-10-31

As has been the case with most DWS recordings, this is truly a classic. Beautifully sung, with new and interesting arrangements of traditional favorites, this disc is a must for all holiday music and DWS fans. Of note are Stephen Paulus' rhythmic "The Holly and the Ivy" and Praetorius' beautiful "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" arranged by Jan Sandström. I highly recommend this recording.

Initially released in 1979, this album built on the success of the legendary Carols for Choirs volumes in establishing John Rutter's name with the wider public, and it gave a strong hint that he was more than just a talented composer-arranger. As the many subsequent releases on the Collegium label have also shown, Rutter is a deeply sensitive and musical conductor, alive to the color of words, always allowing phrases to breathe naturally. The accomplished Clare College Choir features male and female voices, the latter providing a more rounded alternative to those world-famous neighbors in Cambridge. Included are many of Rutter's own easy-listening carol arrangements ("King Jesus Hath a Garden" and "Wexford Carol," for example), plus others by the likes of Vaughan Williams and David Willcocks, while "Donkey Carol" and "Mary's Lullaby" are quintessential Rutter originals. Only a few numbers can be classed (statistically) as all-time Christmas faves--the likes of "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Ding Dong Merrily on High"--but this needn't deter anyone from snapping up what is the perfect album to accompany Christmas pud mixing (preferably by candlelight, imagining the twilight scene in Ely Cathedral's Lady Chapel, whose glorious acoustic graces the sound). --Andrew Green

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Simply gorgeous.......2007-04-10

I bought this album through Columbia mail order, and it instantly became one of my favorite CDs in my collection of over 2000. When it was scratched beyond playability, I immediately re-purchased it. I have almost everything else John Rutter has put out, as well as the Dale Warland singers from the US.
The music is simply ethereal, and the songs are not the overplayed tunes we hear over and over and over.
My two complaints with the album are that some of the tracks are hard to hear because the singing is so quiet and the sound level is uneven between tracks, and some of the tracks have Rutter's cutesy, saccharine arrangements drowning out the singing (Donkey Carol is the protoypical, and one I frequently skip).
However, the album is so beautiful otherwise, with the Wexford Carol, and the nearly inaudible Jesus Christ The Apple Tree, and several other tracks, that I still have to give it a 5 star rating.

    5 out of 5 stars Angelic Music.......2007-01-16

Lovely. So classic and ethereal. Perfect with Christmas dinner, or quiet card games by the fire.

5 out of 5 stars Top list Christmas CD.......2006-12-12

The Holly and the Ivy is one of two absolutely must-have Christmas CDs from Clare College. This is a traditional English choir with adult male and female voices, trained in the utmost clarity and sweetness of voice that is rarely found elsewhere in the singing world. Clare College Choir is coupled with a most delightful orchestral score that seamlessly melds voices and orchestra into something surprisingly merry, uplifting, and completely satisfying. There are both familiar and lesser known carols here, and every single one is a joy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas CD.......2006-11-15

Too many people are overwhelmed with the more modern Christmas songs out there today and are unaware of the wonderful music available on CDs like this. John Rutter proves his brilliance in arranging and conducting. The music overwhelms the senses and the joy of Christmas overcomes you as you listen. This is one of the most peaceful Christmas CDs I have ever heard. "Wassail Song" is incredible, and if you are ever in a small vocal ensemble, this song is a must to perform. You will not be disappointed when you purchase this CD.

5 out of 5 stars traditional, and comfortingly so..........2005-08-23

In a world where new is better and change occurs at an ever-increasing rate, it seems logical that seasonal music would be included in the rush toward mass marketing and commercial airplay. It is amazing, but not surprising, that "carols" which extol the virtues of an electrically-illuminated ungulant, or which humourously recall the tragic events surrounding the collision of an elderly woman and another ruminating creature of the forest should be featured so prominently in the playlists of the popular culture.

Tired as I am of such artistic efforts, Rutter's efforts in leading the Clare College Choir and Orchestra on this collection come at the right time and to the right place. This is true and beautiful music of the season: it is performed well and interpreted with Rutter's master's touch. For those of us whose tastes run to the traditional, this is welcome stuff indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Hail To the Thief!.......2005-08-06

Despite the fact that most of our presidents are not worth remembering in music; this is none the less an interesting CD. Altissimo! has done its usualy bit of culling through the Marine Band library to dig out enough appropriate pieces to put together on one CD. No original recordings here! We should be glad that its a full length selection of over 60 mins for a change, instead of the old 45 min. cheats in the past! Still, the different sound qualities of the various tracks is distracting at times.

Most labels when they combine different recordings together usually list the recording date and who conducted the band at that time. Altissimo! has not graduated to that level of professionalism in their products yet. Hence we just get The US Marine Band, not when it was recorded and who might be directing it!

Fortunately, the quality of the Marine Band is so good that it does not matter what Altissimo! does in putting together a CD. That said, the music provides an interesting chronology of ceremonial music played at the White House over the years. The linear notes are an improvment over the past, when little or nothing was provided. All and all, not bad from what we have come to expect from Altissimo!

4 out of 5 stars Hail to the Chief.......2005-02-02

Hail to the Chief is the latest of about twenty-seven CDs offered by "Altissimo!", which offer recordings of the USA's fine military service musical organizations. Until Altissimo!, these recording were very rare and just about impossible to find. Thanks to Altissimo! every one can appreciate and enjoy the fine music of these top-notch musical organizations.
The program in Hail to the Chief is a tribute to our presidents. It is a varied program that shows the depth of the music played by one of America's oldest, established in 1798, and finest musical organizations, the United States Marine Band. This CD contains twenty-one marches and other classical numbers from Sousa to Strauss to Tchaikovsky. Some of the music in the CD is rare and for this reason alone of interest to music history buffs. One of these selections is a recording of the "Star-Spangled Banner" using the earliest published arrangement (1814) of the anthem. Another is the "Solemn March" played at Lincoln's funeral. Also included a rarely recorded Sousa piece, "Easter Monday on the White House Lawn." There is also an historic 1906 recording of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag."
The recording also contains excerpts from speeches made by five of our presidents four of which were from inaugural addresses. The program notes explain the musical selections and how each was of interest to the various presidents.
The only negative, and it is not with the CD itself, is that the program notes do not include recording dates, where recorded and who the conductor of the band was. I highly recommend this CD to all interested in the America's patriotic music as well as the serious collector of military music and those interested in the musical roots of our country.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Altissimo! Release.......2005-01-13

Listening to the latest CD from Altissimo! brought pleasure to my ears. Whether you like listening to ballads, waltzes, Hungarian Dances, or marches you will find something on this CD that you will love to listen to. This wonderful compilation presents the listener with music favored by 23 of our United States Presidents, and includes bonus tracks of excerpts from four inaugural speeches.

5 out of 5 stars Hail to the Chief.......2005-01-11

Hail to the Chief is unique, educational and without question, absolutely wonderful!

I was initially puzzled by the selections but as I began to listen and read the short narrative that is offered I started to realize I was being taken on a very different trip through American history. Consequently, the impact of the program had a totally unexpected and fascinating effect.

I was not just mesmerized by the sounds I heard, the arrangements which were presented or the memorable utterances of some of our Chief Executives. I was completely entranced by the realization that these men and others who had held the office of President of the United States, had listened and reacted to the same music the CD offers. It gave me an insight into their humanity that text books cannot provide.

As an example, I hadn't known the original sheet music for the "Star Spangled Banner" was arranged differently from the way we listen to it today --- who know how many Americans heard it played that way?

I had never actually thought about the fact that Washington might have actually heard "Hail Columbia" played, just as I was hearing it.

I was a bit startled that Chester Arthur commanded Sousa to compose what became the "Presidential Polonaise" and tried to imagine how much pressure he, (Sousa), must have felt in doing the President's bidding. (By the way, after listening to that unquestionably superb composition of the "March King", I must admit despite its delightful sound, I'm very pleased that we no longer use that as the official march of the President and we have returned to "Hail to the Chief".)

I vividly recall watching the casket of President Kennedy being carried over the steps of the Capitol and listening to "The Navy Hymn" and the music recaptured that moment as if it was yesterday.

It wasn't solely the music I savored but it was also the historical images they engendered. Indeed, music affects all "ages"!

The CD is a professional product that will hopefully be enjoyed by thousands for many years to come.
