What's a modern Mississippi folk chanteuse to do? After being accused in some quarters of compromising her largely acoustic-based music for a major-label deal (1997's Eighteen over Me), then ultimately falling victim to end-of-the-decade roster contractions, Garrison Starr returns after a four-year layoff to stubbornly argue that some of those previous aesthetic choices weren't mere affectations--or a deal with the devil. Sharing production chores with engineer Chris Fuhrman, Starr pushes her dry, expressive voice bravely to the front of a jangly, more spaciously dynamic musical mix. Having survived some hard career knocks and slouching toward 30 years old in a business seemingly drunk on hormonal teen-pop, there's now a welcome bittersweet edge to her songs, especially in the stripped-down, acoustic charms of songs like the vibrant "Serves Me Right" and "Silent Night," the latter enhanced by dreamy guitar atmospherics and the harmonies of Mary Chapin Carpenter. While it's perhaps too easy to read biz-savvy double-entendre into songs like "Star Power" and "Knucklehead," the dramatic "Gardenia" and country-tinged "Hardest Part of Living" only argue that this Starr is still ascending. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Comfortably In-Flight.......2003-11-29

Songs From Take Off To Landing is Garrison Starr's major follow-up to 97's critically acclaimed Eighteen Over Me. Things were looking good for Starr with spots on the Lilith Fair tour, but like many other female singer/songwriters as soon as the tour was over radio play dried up and the girls were banished to the cutout bin. After walking away from music for a time between her two records, Songs From Take Off To Landing plays more as a journey in confidence than anything else. Starr realizes "Somethin's Gotta Change" in the opening track. By the time she hits the middle of the album's "Raging Fire" she recognizes that her heart has found its beat with brand new bright mornings. She also picks up some iconic friends along her way as Mary Chapin Carpenter and Steve Earle lend their support on the journey. On the penultimate track, "Hardest Part Of Living," Starr begs her lover to "come on, break my heart" because she knows she'll ultimately be stronger because of it. One of the most rocking and assured tracks, "Knucklehead," closes the disc acknowledging "you make me wanna rock / you make me wanna sing" and somehow you know she's referring to herself and her rejuvenated confidence in her craft.

4 out of 5 stars Unknown for now... but not for long........2003-05-15

I just saw Garrison Star open for Steve Earle in buffalo, and I must say I was blown away! I had never heard her play or sing a note before, but let me assure you she does both very well. She's the rare combination of a powerful vocalist and a damn good guitar player, and a pretty good songwriter to boot. If you like lucinda williams, or neko case, give Garrison Star a listen. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, this is really good stuff........2003-02-18

I had the pleasure of seeing Garrison Starr last week, she was the opening act for Steve Earle. I'll be honest I had never heard of her nor did I really care. My whole evening was focused on seeing Steve Earle live for the first time. All I can say is wow, she was excellent. I bought the cd from her at the show(which she signed), and she is a realy classy lady. I really like this cd, the hooks are incerdible, I find that the songs reel through my head constantly, they are completely infectious. This is comming from someone(myself)who can normally be found listening to the likes of John Hiatt, Gomez, Cowboy Junkies, Idaho, & The Tragically Hip. This makes a great additon to my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Loved her live.......2003-01-29

The majority of reviews here are from fans who have caught Garrison Starr live. I had never heard of her until I went to see Steve Earle at the House of Blues in Hollywood this last week. She was the opening act. I was mesmerized by her performance. That is why I can not give this CD 5 stars. There is a definite raw, almost 'punk' attitude to her stage presence and especially her guitar playing. Imagine Emmylou if she'd been influenced by Kieth Richards or the Ramones. Garrison's voice, live, is something to behold. It is at once raw, powerful, beautiful and pitch perfect. This CD, unfortunately, does not represent what I saw that night. There is too much 'studio polish'. The edge has been rubbed smooth. Listen to "Serves me Right" and you will catch a glimpse of what this entire CD should have sounded like.. This track was produced by Steve Earle (who also lends his voice in a subtle background). If Mr. Earle has any influence on her, I hope it will be to maintain her musical integrity and not 'give in' to the industry. She personally signed every copy of this CD that was sold after her performance. She's a class act and deserves to be huge.

5 out of 5 stars What a great CD!.......2002-12-03

I can honestly say this cd has been in my player for weeks now and I have yet to skip over a single song. I also had the opportunity to see Garrison in NYC a few weeks ago and though it didn't seem possible, her live performance was even better! Garrison, can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars Yoshinori's distinct downtempo style with a little mid/dance experimentation.......2006-07-20

Insert "Heard this on Somafm's Groovesalad stream.... had to have it" etc... Just like all my other reviews.

Ok that being said, I love Sunahara's style. It's so simple, so kitsch, so cool, and if it doesn't make your head go up and down you are officially dead. There are a few mid to up tempo tracks (sun song 80, summer) that are what I would call "normal Yoshi stuff on speed, in a good way". And then there are a couple like Magic Sunset St and Journey Beyond the Stars that maybe Sony forced him to put on there to switch up the vibe and try to appeal to techno/dance heads.

Great album, get the import for extra cool points.

and I agree with the other reviewer, where is sunahara now???

4 out of 5 stars His best album, especially for fans of Groove Salad radio.......2006-02-18

My first exposure to Sunahara was hearing Sony Romantic Electro Wave on the Groove Salad radio station on the Internet, and I was immediately hooked. I ended up hearing three or four other tracks from him on the station, and I can say that I liked all of them. After delving through his back catalogue and hearing everything he's had to offer, I think that Take Off and Landing is his best work. The repetitiveness of his songs is a knock on him, and I can't argue against that claim. There are a few songs on here that I simply can't sit through in any mood, although there are also a couple I've managed to get used to and even appreciate over time. But whereas his Pan Am album can sound clunky and disjointed and his Lovebeat album cold and sterile (never mind his Crossover album unless you're strictly a fan of dance pop), Take Off and Landing is otherwise a lovely and textured album loosely based around a sci-fi/airport theme.

The aforementioned Sony Romantic Electro Wave is the first Sunahara track I ever heard, and it's still my favorite. I can and do listen to that track over and over. The woman's vocals are so heavily processed that I can only understand maybe half of the lyrics, but that only adds to the mystique and the heavenly bliss generated by the song. Any fan of mid-tempo "moody with a good beat" music who's curious about Sunahara should listen to this track to see if he's an artist that you'd be interested in exploring. There are faster, more danceable tracks on the album. But I think his mid-tempo songs are where he shines best. Other standouts for me are Sun Song '80 (which gets a nice bossa nova treatment on the Pan Am album) and the album closer Welcome to Japan. The haunting-but-beautiful My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose seems a little out of place on the album, but I still like it a lot.

Start with this album, and then branch out to the other albums if you like it. It's too bad we haven't heard anything from him recently. Maybe the Japanese fans get to see or hear him producing or DJ'ing on a regular basis, but his fans outside of Japan have a tough time figuring out what he's doing and if he'll ever put out another album. His official website is outdated and provides no clue as to what he's been up to. If anyone knows what's going on with his career, I hope someone leaves some info here.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing........2003-04-08

This whole album continues to blow me away. And, I'd like to make a small note regarding a fellow reviewer's review: I personally think the tracks he referred to getting mad at due to their "annoyance level" are actually quite good. In particular, track 6, "2300 Hawaii", is gorgeous. Elegant beats are accompanied by various layered samples and subtle vocals that are very laidback and suited to the mood of the song. Plus, they're pretty funny: "Did you try the shrimp dip? Would you like a mai tai?" Well, trust me, they're amusing in the song's context.

The album is a great one to put on and chill out to... It's very easy to just get lost in the music. But, at the same time, it's also very nice to have on when you're doing something creative, a la painting, writing or perhaps juggling chainsaws.

The bottom line, is you people should go listen to this. If you found yourself looking at this album's page for any reason at all, then you'll probably like it.

4 out of 5 stars Good music imagination but best on an edited playlist.......2001-03-12

well, I just got through listening to the CD for the 30th time since I bought it. It is not one of those that you listen to all the tracks at first, I still cannot force myself to listen to tracks 6, 7 and 9-they just really tick me off with their annoyance level. Track 1 is an exception because it is the first impression, and sounds different than the others. Tracks 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12 and 14 have either cool ambient mixtures with good beats you can really get into the groove with, sound like "normal" music, and the others are more like electronic conglomerations. The feel of the album is not up-beat or modern, it is rather loungy and dreamy with soft clicks, record scratches, taps and dance beats in some parts. When you hear the good tracks -preferrably on an edited playlist-you will almost visualize yourself on the beach, or in the 70s in someone's badly decorated living room. Good to keep you up studying or doing artwork stimulated by music. I am a painter and poet-and I can listen to most of it now that it has grown on me.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Enlightment!.......2000-06-19

Yoshinori hits your mental and physical state with complete BLISS! His mixture of dub beats crossed with ambience textures embrace you while your kicked back in your recliner and glass of Merlot ... this album is a must get for your collection.
