5 out of 5 stars I wish they never had to make this album.......2005-11-23

On December 30, 1994 John C. Salvi III made attacks on two women's health clincs in Brookline, MA shooting seven and killing Shannon Lowney and Lee Ann Nichols, two receptionists who worked for the clinics. Even as a thirteen year old at the time I knew this was a tragedy beyond words. It was in response to this that a few local musicians got together to stage some benefit concerts to raise awareness of reproductive rights. The concerts were an overwhelming success and recieved coverage from local 'zines to major outlets like Billboard Magazine and MTV. This album brings together many of the acts that performed at the concerts and a few others with Pro-Choice leanings. It is a fantastic album featuring some of Boston's best acts, some very well known and some unfamiliar to the rest of the country. No matter how great the album may be I'm sure everyone involved would give everything to be able to prevent what happened to Shannon Lowney and Lee Ann Nichols, not to mention the 3,631 women killed in 1996 alone, the 1.3 million women who were physically assaulted and the approximately 200,000 women who were raped by a current or former intimate partner. These numbers are from 1996 and one can only speculate that this number has gone up in the time between then and now. So get the album and rock out but remember the reason this album came into existance and take a stance against violence to women. Sign a petition, take part in a march, sing a song, do something to change these numbers. We can and will make a difference.

    5 out of 5 stars It isn't for you........2002-02-05

This EP is not for the faint. I would call it Jazz, but the Jazz purists out there would start whinning and gesticulating about.
The first time I heard this was in a crowded car and it gave me a headache. It is not conversation music. Subsequently I took the time to listen to it. Some people still listen to music actively, not as something to fill in the otherwise nervous space in an elevator, or an apartment (check out Eno for that). This is the Sound of Violence. I've owned it for a few years now, and every now and again its really fun to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of Noise.......2000-06-26

The 4 tracks on this EP release all sound monotonous -- lots of noise and can get kind of irritating. There are some nice drum effects like Alec Empire and Plug's Luke Vibert can muster on most of the tracks, but lots of aural chaos that, to quote my girlfriend, "sounds like he's torturing children." My favorite off this EP is Corpses (version), which is more of the same but the best configuration of it, and is the only reason for the 3 stars. Perhaps this EP is only for the initiated. If you're a TEF neophyte, "You Guys Kill Me" is your best choice.

4 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-01-29

This is a pleasant album with a nice variety of songs some of which I have not previously encountered. Drew Minter's voice is correct in every way; that is: nice tone quality, accurate pitch and excellent diction. BUT there is no excitement to be had; there is no emotion to latch onto. He sings "O Solitude" just the same as he sings "Crown the Altar" which contain totally different meanings. His best renditions are: "Lord, What is Man" and "Be Welcome then,Great Sir". The only thing I detect that conveys some sense of drama are changes in volume. These songs can be very meaningful when the performer takes note of the song's message. The accompanying instruments are excellent and the album is worth buying if you are "hooked on" Purcell.

5 out of 5 stars cassius returns with a funky house tune!!!.......2002-11-29

since cassius' debut album '1999', the boys have managed to brush up on their funky-house skills. this tune is bangin' with a slammin' house beat and a killer bass line to satisfy even the most devout househead. the feel of the tune is reminiscent of their classic '1999' track, one that is sure to stick in the minds of those familiar with their work. thumpin' house beat, a deep, synth-like bassline and an attention-grabbing vocal, 'i feel like i wanna be inside of you / when the sun goes down' is sure to make anyone drop what they're doing and just move is what makes this track one that will make anyone who has not heard of them before become an instant cassius fan. not to mention a mean guitar sample, which turns into a solo that gives the track that extra edge. all in all, cassius have returned to stake their claim - a french house duo who are intent on making the world know that daft punk are not the only legendary DJ's to represent the French house scene!!

        Album Description

It might be their fifth album, but Stereophonics view Language. Sex. Violence. Other? with the same excitement as a debut record. It's a little under two years since You Gotta Go There To Come Back - Stereophonics' third consecutive Number One album - and the band have been busy touring America, supporting David Bowie and writing and recording. There's a new member-Javier Weyler, who replaces Stuart Cable on drums-and, a new, super-affirmative attitude. `This band is so positive right now,' says Kelly. `We've made the most exciting record we possibly could.' Indeed they have. Language. Sex. Violence. Other? is a magnificent album. Eleven tracks. All killer, no filler. The band agreed they wanted to make something that was very different from their last album. Something that captured the listener straight away, but something that also had a lot of depth. The song titles would all be one word. It would have the energy of their first album, 1997's Word Gets Around, but it would use production tricks Stereophonics had learned along their way to becoming one of Britain's most successful rock bands. It would be a very modern record. This limited UK version includes a bonus DVD (PAL) that includes a footage of five album tracks being recorded in the studio. V2. 2005. * Please note you will need and All Code DVD player to view.
