Customer Reviews:
Great album/Great Human Being.......2006-01-22
I bought this album when it came out, since I recognized him as the author of "City of New Orleans". I burned it to CD years ago, and still listen. I just listened to it a minute ago, now I'm ripping the CD into iTunes for my iPod. "Ballad of Penny Evans" still makes me shudder. What a master he was. And what a cast of superstars played on this album.
"Baby, I ain't never heard you play no blues". Nowadays, B.B. King needs to wear a life-jacket.
Don't think, just buy it.
great stories from a great storyteller.......2005-09-04
Growing up in Wisconsin amid the folksingers and protesters who over the decades have become middle-aged Prairie Home Companion afficionados, I met Steve (and his scruffy sidekick whom I later learned was John Prine) while going to college in Madison, Wisconsin and moonlighting (literally) as a lighting designer in college music venues. Steve had an energy and wit that pervaded all of his music. Like my fellow yankee from Lilburn, GA, I hand out Steve's CDs to cherished friends, doing my small part to keep the music flowing. I was pleased to see John Prine in concert recently, still doing some of the old songs in honor of his best friend. The Ballad of Penny Evans, about a war widow of the Vietnam era - rings as cutting and fresh now, in the context of the current conflict, as it did then. Enjoy this album, and buy more - Artistic Hair is one of my personal favorites - for your friends.
The best of the best!!.......2003-05-14
I knew Steve Goodman (and Brad Ellis) and his demented sidekick, John Prine, from my days as a bartender at the Earl of Old Town in 1970.
It is difficult for me to describe the beauty, the craftsmanship, the honesty, the hilarity of Steve's music. As Brad notes in his review, Steve died way too young.
I guarantee you will not be disappointed if you buy this album. I am on my forth copy now, since I keep giving them away to my friends, some of whom don't know and believe in the genius of Steve Goodman.
I also highly recommend "No Big Surprise", the compilation album of almost all of Steve's songs and performances.
Steve Greatman.......2003-03-18
I just wanted to add to all those ParrotHeads out there (Jimmy Buffett fans) that you'll see a very young Jimmy Buffett on the cover of this cd (I think I remember him using the name "Marvin Gardens") I've loved this album for almost 30 years now.
This Album Started my Goodman Addiction!.......2001-11-09
This is the first Steve Goodman disc I bought. The quality of the recording on this album is excellent. You get a good idea on how Steve reacts to live audiences with the two live teasers I'm My Own Grandpa and The Auctioneer. The studio tracks are excellent as well. Steve's version of Mike Smith's The Dutchman is very touching and heart-felt. Six Hours Ahead of the Sun and Somebody Else's Troubles are more upbeat and can't help but bring a smile to your face when you pay attention to the lyrics.
The beauty of this album is that it is deceptively attractive. By that, I mean you will instantly enjoy the songs that I mentioned in the paragraph above. However, after hearing the remaining tracks a few times, you begin to realize and appreciate the other tracks as well. This is definitely true for Song for David and The Loving Of The Game.
This disc gives you just a glimpse of Steve's true talents. The album includes songs that are upbeat, sad, and fun. Steve was great at capturing all emotions. Would I buy this album, now that I've already heard it? ABSOLUTELY!

it doesn't get better than this............2007-07-18
This soundtrack takes me back. I was probably about six years old when I first heard the soundtrack from FUNNY GIRL, the successful movie musical based on the life story of the late great vaudevillian, Fanny Brice. Though, Brice was not conventionally beautiful, she made quite an impression on those sitting in the theaters she performed in. The woman truly was a gifted and accomplished stand up comedian. She didn't even have to stand up to do it--she was perfectly good at it while slipping in rollerskates, dancing in a parody of Swan Like [Chicken Ballet], and sitting down while singing a torch song.
How did the life story of Fanny Brice transfer to the screen, and on vinyl and CD? It was done with style, class and great humor. What's more, a wonderful score by Jule Styne did wonders in conveying the range of emotions, triumphs and successes that Brice experienced during the course of her career--this encompasses her formative years as a young performer, to her more "domesticated" years [if you can call them that!]. FUNNY GIRL was also a star-making vehicle for [then] twenty-one year old Barbra Streisand. The score includes the larger-than-life "I'm The Greatest Star," the hilarious "His Love Makes Me Beautiful," and one of Streisand's most recognized songs, "People." You will love this soundtrack, and I guarantee it will make you want to see the film afterwards. Though, as a little girl, I felt as though this music was filled with so much color and life already, I could SEE the film through hearing the songs. Brilliant and incomparable.
cd heaven.......2007-01-19
cannot buy cd's cheaper at any store. this is an oldie but a great christmas gift for an oldie.
Nothing Rains on this Parade.......2007-01-04
"Funny Girl" was one of the greatest musicals and cast recordings to come ouf of broadway and it created one of the world's greatest performers ever. Happily Barbra Streisand successfully transported herself to film and out came one of the most enjoyable soundtracks ever produced for a film. The film score is so minutely different, the show's composers Styne and Merrill had to take out a couple of songs from the show and wrote the beautiful "Funny Girl" in it's place for the film. This soundtrack tends to in my opinion be more authentic than the original cast recording because they put in non-original material such as "I'd Rather Be Blue Over You (Than Happy with Somebody Else)" written by Billy Rose who would much later marry Fanny Brice and it fits the early 1900's era for which "Funny Girl" is set and Barbra's comedic skills are timeless on this song you may not see it but you can hear it in her voice such as with "The Swan" .Another song they use at the film's climax is "My Man" not only was it a staple in the real Fanny Brice's act it is a power-house. Barbra insisted to sing the first part live on screen and record the latter part it is so effective and you do get all the advantages of this on the soundtrack. One more bonus to this recording is the overture composed for the film is gorgeous and they never played it in the film only on the soundtrack, interestingly they used the the opening theme music from the film as the closing music to the soundtrack. Definitely get this soundtrack it is one of the most delightful scores to one of Hollywood's greatest musicals adapted from the stage and that can't be said too often. "Funny Girl was also one of the last great musicals ever produced out of Hollywood and the linear notes in the CD are informative and fun for musical lovers.
Streisand in prime vocal condition.......2006-09-16
Barbra Streisand will forever be linked to the autobiographical Fanny Brice, a role she originally made her own on Broadway in 1964 and in London the following year; immortalised onscreen four years later (earning an Academy Award as well as countless other trophies). On the original soundtrack album, Ms Streisand is in prime vocal condition, though I do prefer her performance on the OBC album just a little bit more, for she is more brash and unkempt and far more vulnerable with her spin on Fanny. In the film, she is more confident and showman-like.
The film score of FUNNY GIRL does vary greatly from it's Broadway counterpart. The roles of Mrs Brice and Eddie Ryan don't get much to sing (with the deletion of "Who Taught Her Everything?" and "Find Yourself a Man"). Fanny's solo numbers "Who Are You Now?" and "The Music That Makes Me Dance" were abandoned in favour of numbers that the real Fanny was famous for ("I'd Rather Be Blue" and "My Man"). I believe the producers committed the cardinal sin with the deletion of "The Music That Makes Me Dance", a ballad far more memorable and moving than the show's big number "People" (and I know a lot of others feel the same way). Nevertheless, the film soundtrack of FUNNY GIRL is the perfect sonic representation of Streisand's greatest hour on celluloid.
I own the earlier Sony CD pressing (which is full of analogue hiss, reverb and noise), yet from what I hear about the more recent "remaster", the quality of the overall recording is virtually the same. Highly-recommended, but don't expect miracles with sound quality.
Needs more songs. Missing SECOND HAND ROSE........2006-08-08
The soundtrack is good to excellent, but it makes me very
unconfortable that important songs are MISSING. Can you
imagine SECOND HAND ROSE is missing, and Barbra sings it a little
different from the version she did in MY NAME IS BARBRA TV special. I also love the part where Barbra sings " Mr Anstein,
Mr. Arnstein, what a beautiful name". Those two sequences could be combined into a song. I also would have loved a little spoken
comedy in this soundtrack, such as Barbra as Baby Snooks scene,
where she meets the reporters and ends with "the name is Arnstein". Barbra is marvelous in this comedy scene. Barbra is
perfect as a stand-up comedienne, and she would be great
acting such a part in a film.
Barbra recorded the song PEOPLE countless times over the last
decades. Why was SECOND HAND ROSE left out of the soundtrack.
There is enough space on the Audio CD to include this song, as
well as additional ones. A few Bonus songs of Barbra singing
Fanny Brice songs that were considered but that were left out
of the film, would be most welcomed. Looking forward to the next
edition of this soundtrack. hoping that it will be the definite
edition. We Barbra Streisand fans deserve the best.

REMEMBER THE PARADISE GARAGE NYC.......2007-04-06
I remember just graduating from high school in 1988 and my sister had just moved out on her own in my parent's 2 family house in Queens,New York. She advised me that anytime I wanted to go to the Paradise Garage, the premiere house nightclub.......just tell mommy and daddy your staying over at my house for the weekend. Needless to say........IT WAS ON AND POPPIN!!!! The cut from Ms. Brown that would get the party started was definitely AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH. Personally, and surely I'm not trying to downgrade Diana Ross by any means, but when you hear Ms. Brown's roaring rendition of this Motown classic, I don't think you will be wanting to hear the orginal anytime soon. Ms. Brown had a going to church alto that made you want to say amen and run to the dance floor. SOMEBODY ELSE'S GUY is the hit that everyone knows her for but cut, CAUGHT UP(IN A ONE NIGHT LOVE AFFAIR)was affectionately my favorite. I clearly rememember going to a street festival somewhere downtown NYC and AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN came on and I swear it turned into something out of the movie FAME, with everybody just dancing so free and happy! I will never forget that as long as I live. Kudos to amazon for having this classic.

One of the best party jams of all time!.......2000-02-29
Hard, hard, hard to find--put "Somebody Else's Guy" on and watch the party begin!
I Love it. Where can I find the instrumental track?.......1999-09-25
I remember when this little number was released. I think everybody on my block, and in my family loved it right away and went out and bought it. The artist, Jocelyn Brown is sensational--her voice and style of delivery simply great. The music arrangement is absolutely great. The lyrics are well put together in a totally direct way--no mistake about the concept of the message. I have this number in my collection of many and I listen to it more than any of the rest. I would love to have also the instrumental version. PLEASE HELP ME TO FIND IT. Thank you in advance. Barbara (BJ)

Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31
Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.
This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.
Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

On Par With Sunday Street.......2005-07-07
The liner notes to Sunday Street claim that that album is Dave's best album. I'd like to make the case that 1980's Somebody Else Not Me, an obvious reworking of the Sunday Street formula, is at least the equal of its predecessor. My personal opinion is that Somebody Else is a better realization of the Sunday Street vision. While the earlier album does contain the brilliant title track, overall I prefer the song selection and the arrangements on the later album. Highlights for me include the definitive version of Tom Paxton's "Did You Hear John Hurt?" and the wonderful guitar arrangement of Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty." In short: if you like Sunday Street, you will certainly like Somebody Else, Not Me. The latter album should be considered a work of equal merit, not simply a rehashing of a successful formula. Having said all this, I still think Dave's best album is the Fantasy LP called Folksinger.

RIP Jimmy Lee Fautheree.......2004-12-14
Is Jimmy Lee Fautheree (the Jimmy here, amongst several "Johnnies" and one "Wayne") the most underappreciated country & western / rockabilly guitarist EVER? Could be! Sadly we lost Jimmy in 2004. He recorded a new CD with the fantastic Deke Dickerson (entitled "Found the Doorknob" after a tune following-up the original "Can't Find the Doorknob" included here) which showed his singing and playing chops intact. Jimmy Lee is one the first great Tele twangers and his solos are featured throughout this extensive Bear Family compilation of hillbilly laments, honky tonk dance tunes and some precious raw rockabilly. No collection of rockabilly is complete without "Love Me," "True Love on My Mind" and "Doorknob" and they are all here.
Lost 1950s country gold!.......2002-11-20
Wow! I only picked this CD up because it was something new from Bear Family, and 'cuz it looked cool. Imagine my ecstasy when I discovered that these guys were part of Webb Pierce's regular songwriting stable in the late '50s... not only that, but one of these fellows went into a performing and composing partnership with Wayne Walker -- one of my favorite Webb songwriters -- and there are demo tapes here to prove it. GREAT STUFF in a variety of styles, including ultra-twangy, uptempo honkytonk, Everly-esque teenpop, and out-and-out rockabilly. They even poke fun at their patron, Webb Pierce, on "Sweet Singin' Daddy." HIGHLY recommended!

Album Description
A rock CD that crosses back and forth betwen punk-pop and acoustic singer-songwriter material, Val Fatale's Be Somebody Else is an overachievement of a solo project. With help from different musicans and producers, Doug Levin of Val Fatale has made a great splash with his first CD.

Original and Awsome.......2005-10-10
As it turns out, the Band member (Doug Levin) lives right across the hall from me now at the university of iowa. I've had the chance to play some tracks with him, and he gave me a copy of his Cd. The music is original and awsome... Its such a great cd to listen to and with 22 tracks, it never gets old. Some of my favs are 6,7,13,14,and 20. If you haven't heard it, do so. NOW!
Surpisingly Great.......2005-05-06
I was tipped off to Val by a friend out in California who said that he stumbled across it. I was not expecting great things because this friend has led me astray on few of his "finds". But not this time. Val Fatale's songs are catchy, authentic, and mix just the right of amount of punk with singer/songwriter-esque songs. I don't know if they(he?) plan on coming out with another album or to go on tour....but i am definitely going to keep my eyes and ears open. Moral of the story: buy this...you won't be dissapointed.
Best CD I've heard in a long time.......2004-06-29
This CD is awesome - it starts off a little punk but ends with some great slower songs that remind me of Ryan Adams and John Mayer. One of those great albums that you can listen to, over and over again!
