Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams

My sort of music .......2007-07-12
As Im in my sixties you might think Im to old, but this is my sort of music.I reckon " john fogerty " is a great singer. Just listen to find out. Hope you like it the same as I do.
CCR.......2007-06-28
An excellent greatist hits CD, I used a handful of songs to burn a CD with other related style of music.
great stuff.......2007-06-27
listening to this CD makes you realize how great john fogerty was back in the day. great songs, great sound.
Gets me going in the morning.......2007-06-27
I've been listening to this CD for 2 weeks in my car on the way to work.
Soundtrack of an era.......2007-06-15
This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

She's no stranger to the towering highs and lows of the heart, and Etta James's soaring, gospel-tinged pipes match up well with the rigors of unabashed bliss. Happily, the good people at Chess Records recognize this, and they have thoughtfully collected some of the best examples into one tidy record. Kicking off with her classic treatment of "At Last," the collection moves through the lilting strings of "My Dearest Darling" on into the expressive tones of "I Want to Be Loved (But Only by You)" with grace and emotional candor. James can be simultaneously tender and deeply honest and her ability to express the desperate joy that is the soul of love remains one of life's marvelous pleasures. --Matthew Cooke
Customer Reviews:
THE LADY CAN SING.......2007-07-15
When Etta James starts to sing the world stands still and your heart skips a beat. What a voice this lady had. I am very thankful to have this music as it can transform an ordinary day into a fantastic mood of love and happiness. When she sings At Last or Sunday King of Love my heart smiles and her smooth blues make me sings too. She makes music way more than just sound. Thanks
New Edge to "Old" Love Songs.......2007-07-07
For years I have said that even though Etta James did not have many "Top Ten" hits on the charts, she is the best interpreter of other singers' songs, the best who ever lived and sang on a New Orleans or a Chicago stage or bar stool. She takes every song she sings and makes it all new and all Etta. She is the single most important reason I became a fan of the blues _ _ _ years ago. You get the picture? I am an old lady and am an old fan.
She's been through many years of problems and heartache, but then, here she still is, with a voice that is even better (if that's possible!) than when she was a sweet young thing performing with Louie Armstrong, Ray Charles, BB King and all the great band leaders and blues singers. She even has a new thin physique!
A couple of the tunes are ones she had in her regular repertoire forty-five years ago and others are contemporary hits from other artists. Each one is "pure Etta." I seem to play this one over and over and over. I can't get enough. I even have it on my computer so I can listen to it when I am doing other work!
This CD is a great example of what the blue are and the influence it can have on all kinds of music. Some of the tunes one will hardly recognize at first. And--the best part of this recording is that you don't have to be in love to enjoy it! (though it wouldn't be bad that way, too)
Etta.......2007-05-30
Great songs and some very sensual! Perfect for a romantic dinner at home with candles.....
Gets better each time.......2007-04-02
This is one of those CD's that just keeps getting better with familiarity. Etta really puts her heart and soul into each song. I bought it for "At Last" but now love all the songs on it. It sounds like my old 45's, but in a good way.

Nice singers, good for nostalgic Soul fans!.......2007-03-06
This CD is a good addition to your 70s Soul collection if you also like The O'Jays, Spinners, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isley Brothers and/or The Main Ingredient, Four Tops, The Dramatics and any other of those wonderful Soul bands that ruled the "classic" Philly and Motown sound.
A must for any CD collection.......2007-03-04
I was only 7 years old in 1972 when CB&SR were in their short lived hey-day. But even at 7 years old the sounds of R&B and Edward's voice was the icing on the cake for my love for great soul music along with Stevie Wonder, The O-jays and many more. Having this CD in my collection now not only brings back great memories but makes me appreciate the soulful sound and great lyrics written by the Cornelious Brothers. I only wish they were still going. I recamend getting this collection it is truly a great album and edwards voice is one of a kind even for a 7 year old kid in 1972.

Where's their first Album?.......2005-02-17
I bought the Cornelius Bros.& Sister Rose first album on vinyl back in 1972. It was one of the few albums produced that didn't have a bad cut on it. The majority of the songs on this CD were on that album, but it just makes me miss the first album all the more. Why hasn't Rhino or someone else picked up on this group and re-released the first album on CD?

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely enthralling collection of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's finest Decca recordings........2007-05-24
Over the past three decades I had come across her name on numerous occasions. Yes, I certainly had heard of Sister Rosetta Tharpe but as far as I know I had never actually heard any of her recordings. My interest in hearing her work peaked recently after reading Gayle Ward's engaging biography of this remarkable lady entitled "Shout, Sister, Shout". After finishing the book I immediately ordered what appeared to me to be the best available collection of her music. In 2003, MCA/Decca released this marvelous single disc collection they call "Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Gospel of the Blues". This disc made me a huge fan in very short order.
"Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Gospel of the Blues" features the cream of the crop of her most productive years at Decca between 1938 and 1947. While Rosetta always considered herself to be first and foremost a gospel singer she nonethless did not hesitate to venture into other genres when the opportunity arose. You can sample some of her earliest gospel offerings on this disc. Memorable songs like "Rock Me", "Sit Down" and her own composition "This Train" were big sellers in the late 1930's. Along about 1941 Rosetta received an offer she simply could not turn down. The popular Lucky Millinder big band offered her an opportunity to be a featured vocalist. Many of her ardent gospel devotees were extremely upset with Rosetta for singing secular music. However, the gig with Lucky Millinder would prove to be highly successful and result in several of her biggest hits. You may sample three of these tunes on this disc including the rollicking "Shout, Sister, Shout", "Trouble In Mind" and the blues classic "I Want A Tall Skinny Papa" from 1942. After a few successful years with the band Sister Rosetta Tharpe decided it was time to return to her roots once again. In the mid 1940's she produced some of her very finest work. Sample Sister's take on traditional tunes like "God Don't Like It", "Didn't It Rain" and "Strange Things Happening Everyday". And if that were not enough enjoy her inspiring duet with Marie Knight "Up Above My Head I Hear Music In The Air". Outstanding!
I cannot say enough about "Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Gospel of the Blues". All I know is that I have become a fan for life. Pick this one up for yourself and you just might discover why a young Elvis Presley used to listen to her recordings all the time. "Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Gospel of the Blues" comes complete with a very informative 16 page booklet. Very nicely done and very highly recommended!
A Gospel Goldmine!.......2007-02-15
This is a prized collection of songs by the influential Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Elvis Presley's favorite gospel artist. She is raucous and wild, and her rock and roll sermons have a timeless authenticity that is sure to thrill fans of quality R&B, gospel and the blues. Hallelujah!
The Genius Of Schizophrenia...Music For Saints & Sinners Indeed.......2006-06-13
Was she a Gospel singer or a precursor of Rock and Roll? The elements of blues and swing are all here as is straight ahead heartfelt soul..The exuberance of spirit radiates throughout.
The tension on display of being the daughter of a preacher with a lustful vibrato is truly a creative process on these recordings spanning 1938-1948..
Listening to this fine single disc compilation of her more famous sides is a treat..the sound was restored using the CEDAR process, informative booklet on her life within,as the music plays on one her the soul of it all on display and it is no wonder that the many styles she lived in her private life was expressed in her music as a balancing act that is truly human.
A fine single disc samper of thsi faithful woman of God.......2004-12-03
Sister Rosetta Tharpe truly had a calling(a Gift) from God, and she submitted to it perfectly(Glory to God!). Tharpe sang the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but in a style where she blended marvelously Gospel music with jazz, swing, and blues. Tharpe touched many lives, including those of G.I.'s in the war, via radio broadcasts. Tharpe not only sang with passion and swing, and with a clear dicty voice, but with soul, and conviction! She also happens to be one of the greatest jazz guitar players of all time, always incorperating creative and swinging jazz guitar solos, into every piece she recorded. A great single disc cd that will proove that Tharpe was one of the finest jazz based gosel singers of all time, and certianly a jazz guitarist on the same level as Charlie Christianson.
Exellent r&b music, with a Gospel aftertaste.......2004-04-16
Although on the cover of this cd, Sister Rosetta Tharpe looks pecularly like Alberta Hunter, but don't let that fool you. This cd is a great one, if you like early wailin' r&b, or swing tinged Gospel. I mean you can jitterbug or lindy hop to most of thsi stuff, and the rest is greta for listening. Christian music today is so commercial souning and pop sounding, back in the 40's, Tharpe made it swing, jump, stomp and wail, adding r&b, and her genious jazz guitar riffs, rock and roll like mad. Her voice is heavenly and if you like r&b divas liek Helen Humes, you'll love Sister Tharpe's unique and always jiving style.
If you thought you didn't liek Gospel music, try this, and it'll change your mind, for Tharpe added r&b(almost rock'n'roll at times), and swing, jazz, and jump blues to her approach. Sometimes singing pop songs, blues, and r&b filled gospel. A exellent cd tah tcover her 1930's to late 40's recordings.

Classic Love Songs Sung by Phil.......2007-06-27
What can I say, Phil you've done it again. Once more you showed the world why you are one of the primier male R&B singers. A lot of people try to cover the classics but only a few can do it with such style and grace, and you are one of those few. Each song was sung with such care and feeling. Man you've done the originals (songs)proud and I believe the writers of these songs and are pleased that you have reminded us of what a love song is suppose to sound like. Phil, you da man!!
The Classic Love Songs by Phil Perry.......2007-01-11

Tell Mama: The Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions.......2006-11-10
Not my favorite piece, but Etta always pleases.
Lord Have Mercy.......2006-03-16
Tell me mamma... I love this CD. I think it should come with a warning label. "Caution: You will wake up the neighbors". Buy it. I can't play it quiet... I can't not sing along with it... I can't stop dancing when it is on.
4 1/2 stars. A wonderful, varied soul record.......2005-06-11
More soul than blues, Etta James' "Tell Mama" originally came out in 1968 as a twelve-track LP. And here it is in its remastered 2001 incarnation, bolstered by no fewer than ten bonus tracks which earns the reissue the subtitle "The Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions".
The sound is terrific, clear and realistic, as is the production by Rick Hall. And those who feel that Etta James' Chess recordings featured too many violins and not enough power need to pick up "Tell Mama" right away!
The original album was top-notch in its own right, featuring the all-time classic soul ballad "I'd Rather Go Blind", excellent covers of Ed Townsend's "I'm Gonna Take What He's Got", Otis Redding's "Security" and Jimmy Hughes' "Don't Lose Your Good Thing", and a couple of driving up-tempo numbers, most notably Don Covay's "Watch Dog" and the magnificent title track.
Etta James never sounded better than during these four 1967-1968 sessions, and the various musicians never set a foot (or a finger) wrong.
There really isn't a single weak track among the twelve songs originally issued. Even practically unknown songs like the swaggering soul stomper "My Mother In Law" and the slow "It Hurts Me So Much", which have never been covered by anyone and don't appear on any of Etta James' compilation albums, are highly enjoyable, and Etta's rendition of "Just A Little Bit" (AKA "I Just Want A Little Bit") is a supremely funky slice of soul-blues.
And the bonus tracks aren't rejects by any means. They include "Almost Persuaded", "Misty", the rocking "You Took It", a very good interpretation of Sonny Bono's "I Got You Babe", and two soulful takes on "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", a song which has been interpreted by everybody from Aretha Franklin to the Flying Burrito Brothers.
I'm no big Etta James fan, actually, but this album is something special. I completely fell for it the first time I put it on, and to me "Tell Mama" is the best record Etta James has ever made, one of the finest, most cohesive soul and R&B records of the late 60s.
You really ought to give it a listen.
What a re-issue should be!.......2005-02-23
In addition to the 12 re-mastered original tracks, there are 10 more (including 2 versions of "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"). There are some good songs here that are not included on either "Her Best" or "The Chess Box", including "Watch Dog", "My Mother In Law", "It Hurts Me So Much", "I've Gone Too Far", and her funked-out Soulful rendition of "I Got You Babe". This is a must-have for Etta fans.
Blistering, bluesy R&B.......2003-01-15
The ever-vivacious Etta James is one of R&B's true greats, an artist whose work will always stand the test of time and this album, originally released in 1968, is one of her best-known and most powerful. More dynamic than expressive, James was a gal who clearly knew how to rock, capable of the same sort of expansiveness as Jimmy Rushing or even jump blues shouters such as Wynonie Harris, but also with a touch of the sleekness seen in Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald. The "Tell Mama" album is a flawless, timeless crowd pleaser, packed with upbeat, compact material, a tailormade showcase for James' mousy snarl. Backed by the best of the Muscle Shoals crew, this is music that can't easily be faulted; with ten bonus tracks added on for good measure, this CD edition is pretty hard to resist.

Customer Reviews:
My favorite CD for jazz standards.......2006-05-19
I absolutely love this CD. I've had it for years and never get bored of it. Not only are they terrific songs, they are wonderful performances by the great vocalists of that time. I really enjoy buying jazz cds with various artists because I can sample new artists. After buying this CD I went on to buy music by Julie London, Eartha Kitt, and the list goes on. Great standards and great performance - the way these songs should be sung! Cry Me a River and Black Coffee - my favorites!
By the way, there's one review that describes this cd as man-bashing. I don't get that feeling when I listen to the CD. To me, it's fantastic love songs - and sometimes love is sad or unfair, or really great - and that's all there is to it.
Blankets of Nostalgic Bliss.......2005-10-22
Can you hear the soothing rawness of the needle landing on the vinyl? Can you smell the rich ruby lip rouge seducing the sound stage? Can you see the swaying sirens blessed with longing lungs and forelorn hearts? Here you have Edith Piaf and Etta James, the songs Cry Me a River and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. This collection sealed my arrival to true womanhood and music lover land. Listening to these ladies, true Torch Singers, I felt transported back to the hallways of my parents' high schools and my grandparents' parlour rooms. The biographical writings contained in the CD jacket makes for good reading as a luxe bonus. I've had this tremendous collections for years now but all that currently remains is the gorgeous CD cover, so I'm putting a freshly sealed copy in my shopping cart, as should you. Bought during a strange Eartha Kitt fixation, this CD offers a wealth of long satisfying listening pleasures. Run a bath on a rainy day or take a stroll through a fresh snowfall. Whatever ambient escape you desire, this auric interlude will warm you with blankets of nostalgic bliss.
Soft . . . Soulful . . . Sighing . . . or Sad ........2004-02-21
This review relates to the musical CD, "Sirens of Song:
Classic Torch Singers." Rhino: R2 72514. 1997.
The atmosphere, locale, and tone of these songs
and presentations is close, soft, intimate, jazzy blue,
and easily accessible.
The songs and singers are: "Cry Me A River", Julie
London; "Black Coffee", Sarah Vaughan; "Stormy
Blues", Billie Holiday; "I'm Getting Sentimental Over
You", Ella Fitzgerald; "But Not For Me", Judy Garland;
"Stormy Weather", Lena Horne; "Come Rain or Come Shine",
Marlene Dietrich; "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", Eartha Kitt;
"La Vie En Rose" (in English), Edith Piaf; "At Last";
Etta James; "Since I Fell For You", Nina Simone; "What A
Difference A Day Makes", Dinah Washington; "I Got It Bad
And That Ain't Good", Carmen McRae; "Soul On Fire",
LaVern Baker; "I'll Wait For You", Ruth Brown.
What really fascinates and pleases on this disc are
the distinctive tonalities, stylings, and intimate
involvement with the songs which each of these ladies
presents. As each voice comes on with its own song
of love-lorn experience and "wisdom" gained, it is
instantly recognizable as belonging to the particular
lady who sings it. There is pathos in these songs,
but scarely any pitiful whining. And, strangely,
although the subject matter is about sadness and
loss, the presentations are soft and soulful, very
restful and in a way, comforting. That's the way
of the world -- it happens to us all -- life is
not just laughter and blase glitz, it's also
cold experience and pain, but at some point there
has to be soulful, restful assessment and release.
For me, the slight irritation in some of the orchestrations,
is the "intrusion" of the jazzy, muted trumpets as if
inserting a bit of razzing worldly smart-aleck
comment. The other possible irritation for some
may be the inclusion of Marlene Dietrich among these
stylish ladies of song -- hers seems more like a
"campy" inclusion, with even a talking portion in
the song.
The personal standouts for me are Billie Holiday,
Ella Fitzgerald (stylish sophistication personified),
Eartha Kitt, Edith Piaf, Etta James, Dinah Washington
(what a special sound her voice has!), Carmen McRae
(another special sound).
The booklet included has excellent photographs of
Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald,
Judy Garland, Julie London, Eartha Kitt, Marlene
Dietrich, Etta James, and LaVern Baker.
The purpose is: "The lives of the women who pour their
hearts out on -Sirens of Song: Classic Torch Singers-
read like a litany of heartache, hardship, seesaws of
rejection and adoration, and deaths that came too soon.
Emotion and upheaval make for 'good torch.' Technically,
a torch song is about unrequited love. Here we have
broadened the definition to include all aspects of
love -- good, bad, and uncontrollable -- for that
special, or ultimately not-so-special someone." --
Norma Campbell Edwards. "Happy" listening.

So So Sirens.......2004-02-15
I appreciate good jazz vocals; but, these are just ok jazz vocals, with big name singers. I guess I had expected the songs to be cleaned up a bit - you know digitally perfect. While there are a lot of wonderful songs here, by most of the original performers, that does not make them the best versions of the songs. Unfortunately the feel of the songs gradually goes from lounge jazz (good) to early Doo-whop (just ok). Still, if you're in the mood for some historic / nostalgic performances by the first first ladies of music, there is a place in your collection for this disk. I personally enjoyed Judy Garland's: But Not For Me.
The one other thing about the CD I didn't care for was the marketing technique used. It is an honorable thing to support shelters for battered women; however, it is not necessary to employ subtle, emotional male-bashing in the liner notes. Our two genders will never achieve equality, if they can't treat each other with respect and consideration.
Listen once and you're hooked.......2004-01-23
I used to work part-time at Tower Records. Every day when you work at Tower, you get to play a CD sometime during the course of your shift. Whenever I played this CD, customers would flock up to the front counter wanting to know what it was and where in the store they could find it (the first time the copy I was playing was the only copy in the store -- the first customer who asked me for it got to buy it right off the CD player and I had to special-order it for a bunch of other people). It got so popular in the store that the manager ordered a bunch and put the CD on one of the preview-play stations.

Classic Masters - Taste of Honey.......2005-09-26
The only thing I really wanted the Sukiyaki song to play for my students in Japanese class. It turned out it was fun to hear Boogie Oogie Oogie again and I enjoyed some other songs too.
bobbyohyeah.......2005-08-16
YES they were a great band and YES we want to hear their songs remastered to the finest quality but WHY OH WHY would you remaster short versions?? I have to wonder what record company phillistine would remaster disco classics like Boogie Oogie Oogie and Rescue Me as single edits only and not the original extended versions. Collectors of disco music want complete versions. Next time get it right please or dont bother.
Three star rating for the greatness of the artists and the budget price of the CD but true fans should question whether it is worth purchasing.
Slammin Set.......2003-09-15
Taste of Honey were a Bad Duo.these Sisters threw down on there Instruments&brought alot of flavor with there vocals.they got songs that you know anywhere you go.you can groove to them&then get Mellow to them.
Taking me "back in the day...".......2002-06-01
OMG, I loved A Taste of Honey when I was in high school (during the late '70s). Recently, I've been nostalgic for those kinder days and I've been purchasing quite a few classic CDs...I found this and purchased it immediately! I'd forgotten how truly beautiful Janice Marie Johnson's vocals are on songs such as "I'll Try Something New," (cover of a Smokey Robinson tune), "Sukiyaki," and "Rescue Me".
Whatever happened to these ladies? I think they still have a lot of good tunes in them...

Customer Reviews:
Classic New Orleans Soul.......2007-04-10
This entry in Capitol's "Crescent City Soul" series (other volumes, each containing 20 tracks, are devoted to Dave Bartholemew's productions, "Let The Good Times Roll" which covers r&b hits from 1949 - 66, and "Fats Domino's Jukebox" as well as a Domino boxed set) is a fleet summary of an important and influential label's output covering 1959 (when 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo' was recorded) to spring of 1963, when Minit producer/auteur Allen Toussaint was drafted. The fact that the cover dates are slightly off is just one detail that gives this project a rushed, budget-line feel, especially compared to the same label's 1994 double-cd set "The Minit Record Records Story" - that package, sadly out of print, told the story of Minit's two disparate eras, with a generous 28 tracks representing the Toussaint era on disc one and 25 more covering the revived label (an outlet for Liberty's black music releases)from 1966 to 1970, plus a 20 page booklet. Nor can one avoid comparing the present series to Capitol's marvelous "Capitol Blues Collection", a 1995 - 97 project that issued about two dozen lovingly packaged, designed, and restored titles, many of them 2- or 3-CD sets with lengthy and informative notes, overseen by Pete Welding, covering long lost music by John Lee Hooker, Roy Brown, Jimmy Rogers, T-Bone Walker, and included multi-artist comps such as " the superb Louisiana Swamp Blues" and "Kansas City Blues".
No, if one knows what Capitol's legacy is and what the label is capable of, the present entry seems rather thin indeed, but taken on its own terms it does contain seminal and historically important music, proto-soul music that remains vital for listening or dancing to the present day, bridging the more aggressive r&b of the '50s (Bartholemew, Paul Gayten) with the harder edged funk wrought by The Meters and others beginning around 1967 or '68. Indeed, N.O.'s eccentric mixture of influences (Toussaint's hero was Professor Longhair)and its seemingly inexhaustible pool of brilliant musicians and singers have insured a steady stream of terrific reissues in recent years. "Fortune Teller," Mother In Law", "A Certain Girl" and "Over You" are just a few of the classics that have been covered by artists such as The Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds across the past 45 years.
John Broven's notes are fine, and all tracks have been restored to original mono, so those new to this material or recent converts will be thrilled. But, at only 20 songs, "Finger Poppin'" doesn't even break 50 minutes. For now it appears to be the best bet out there, and reasonably priced. Toussaint's next step (post-Military service) would be a&r man/producer/writer for Sansu Enterprises (through the Bell/Amy/Mala/Sansu family of labels), writing and producing classics for the great Lee Dorsey (check out his two greatly expanded classics on Sundazed, "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey" as well as the 1970 masterpiece "Yes We Can Can"); for a great selection of 50 tracks by Betty Harris, Calvin Lee, Art Neville and other N.O. legends, (many backed by The Meters as of '67), check out the terrific "Get Low Down! The Soul Of New Orleans 1965 - 67" on Sundazed, which nicely captures this period of Toussaint's (and his hometown's) development, and is recommended.
A BEAUTIFUL LOOK LISTEN TO HOW NEW ORLEANS DOES IT.......2007-03-08
i have quite a few collections of new orleans fonk and soul. this one is, as the others, ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!!!! i just love listening to joints from this particular period of music because you just do not hear this stuff on the oldies stations anymore, and it's a doggone shame. i love everything on here. no complaints at all.
Superlatives fail me..........2006-01-24
...when it comes to lavishing praise on this compilation commensurate with its excellence...Just suffice it to say that this is both R&B and pop done to the highest standard possible. Incredibly great songwriting, singing and production from the sui generis Allen Toussaint. You can truly see why he's known as a musician's musician and is one of the towering figures of N.O. music...I saw him at the Jazz Fest a coupla years ago, and even from what seemed like miles away, with the huge crowd, he was just tremendous, blowing away every other act I saw that day...
Now, after you pick up this stellar comp of Toussaint productions, be sure to go out and get the Allen Toussaint Collection, a comp of his own solo work. You'll be very happy.
good early New Orleans soul.......2005-04-20
while a lot of these songs may not be well known, they are great soul selections from the early days. A good contrast is the later Minit records collection from the late 60's early 70's, which is distinctly more "funky".
Satisfaction.......2003-04-08
I bought this album on a whim. I only recognized a couple of the songs but within less than a week I knew all the words to all the songs. All the songs are catchy in the way that pop songs were meant to be. This type of music, this cajun-influenced R&B is catchy without being annoying like Doo Wop can be after listen number 30. I liken this album to early Otis songs like 'Shake' and 'Respect' or early Ray Charles songs like 'You Be My Baby'. This album is just plain fun. Neither too fast or slow and always a little off-beat (like 'Mother-in-Law' which likens the woman to satan and '39-21-46', come on, who really has these proportions?!). These were songs that were too black for white charts making them that much cooler now.
