The best of Manhattans.......2006-03-13
One of the few bands that could tell you a story in a song
A Lot to Like Here.......2004-12-22
The Manhattans go back to the pre-Beatles (and for the most part the pre-Motown) era so it is not surprising that some of their earlier work such as "I Wanna Be Your Everything" and "One Life to Live" aren't on this compilation. No doubt other record companies were involved in the recording of those songs. There's a lot to enjoy here; even the non-hits are easy to listen to. My sister, a longtime country music fan, heard Blue Lovett do the ...this has got to be the saddest day of my life...opening on "Kiss and Say Goodbye" and made me rewind the tape I had then and replay it over and over on a 90-mile trip to the airport. She had the CD version installed in her bar's juke box. That's the power of the song; it had been almost 20 years since the tune first came out when that happened. And "Shining Star", a truly good love song, is special to me for a 1975 trip my wife and I made as the song was released. Even though those two songs still get preferential play, I enjoy all of their songs here. I recommend this compilation to go with your favorite Chi-Lites CD.
The BEST!.......2003-07-28
Truly one of their finest! Almost every Manhantan song you could possibly want is on this album with one exception "If I Had One Life to Live". I can't seem to find this song anywhere on a Manhattan's CD. They sing a very short version of it on their "Live in South Africa" CD. If anyone knows where I can find this song, PLEASE let me know.
Kiss and Say Goodbye.......2002-09-27
Good music and songs have all been played and sung
The best album.......2001-12-10
This is one of the best, However, I'm still looking for an old one of there's titled "With these hands" which to me is the best. If anyone knows of where I can find it please respond. It's on the Deluxe label DPL12000.

LEGENDARY ICON OF SONG~BRAVO JERRY! .......2004-03-22
If Jerry Butler only had one hit and it was "For Your Precious Love", he would be a Soul Legend!! But this master had classic's like "Moon River", "He Will Break Your Heart", "Let It Be Me" (a truly brilliant duet with the late and great Betty Everett),and countless other classic hits such as the ones in this tasty sampler! Talk about overlooked classic's, I would most definitely put Jerry Butler at the head of that list and when anyone who love's great singing gets into this collection they will feel the same way!! Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame let's get it together!!!!! This is a master and this collection of classic's such as "Only The Strong Survive", "Moody Woman", "I Dig You Baby", the mesmerizing "Mr. Dream Merchant", the soulful "Lost", and the masterful "Hey, Western Union Man", all make Jerry Butler one of the greatest ever!! Get this and for sure you will seek out other great works from this Legend!! Look at all of the "out of stocks" on this great singer and act fast!!!! Smoldering glorious tones and deeply passionate emotion made this wonderous talent a once in a lifetime experience!! Bravo Jerry!!!!

No Beauty Here Folks, Just Pure Raw Talent.......2006-10-29
I imagine back in the day they didn't quite know what to do with the Major; he was nothing to look at, no matter how they did up his hair! Well, he was a boxer, raw, inelegant, much like that other singing boxer, Jackie Wilson. But what they both had in common besides their vocation was they both had pipes, and they both, unsurprisingly, had some crazy footwork going for them! Curtis Mayfield wrote some killer songs for him, though, and the Major remains a somewhat underappreciated talent. He would have never made it in the MTV age without reconstructive surgery, but in the early 60s all there was was American Bandstand, and that was Major Lance's place to shine! Listen to "Monkey Time" and hear The Impressions as back up singers!
THIS IS AN R&B CLASSIC........2006-08-23
IF YOU'RE AN R&B AFICIONADO THIS A MUST FOR YOUR COLLECTION. THE CD HAS HIT AFTER HIT AND WILL TAKE YOUR MEMORY WAY BACK TO THE EARLY TO MID 1960'S. MANY OF THESE SONGS WERE WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY THE LATE CURTIS MAYFIELD. "MONKEY TIME" IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES. YOU'LL ALSO LIKE THE VERSION BY LAURA NYRO ON HER ALBUM "GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE" FEATURING LABELLE.
LOST SOUL GEMS !.......2006-07-04
Major Lance will be best remembered for his memorible golden hits: "The Monkey Time", "Um Um Um Um Um Um". He should be in the rock and roll hall of fame. He is surely in rock and roll heaven !!
a must for mayfield fans.......2000-09-18
Major Lance was a protege of the great Curtis Mayfield. His Sixties recordings were great examples of Chicago sweet Soul. This collection brings together all of his biggest hits and most of his best tracks. The songwriting, arranging and producing is mainly by Curtis Mayfield and is very much in the vein of his classic work with The Impressions--melodic, rhythmically interesting and compelling. Major Lance is vocally quite worthy of the material. The results are a must for any Mayfield fan.

How Can This Be A Best Of?.......2006-09-03
5 Stars for William Bell, still sounding , and looking great as ever in the year 2006.. But Where is his biggest hit 'You Dont Miss Your Water'?, and 'Marching Off To War' , and' Eloise -Hang On In There'? , and 'Everybody Loves A Winner'?,and 'Never Like This Before'? This Seems to be a compilation of his later stuff . Some leasing of Masters needs to be done so we can REALLY get the best of William Bell, unless ,in addition , you purchase 'The Soul Of A Bell', CD which has some of these earlier tunes on there .
Very Solid Collection.......2003-09-07
William Bell doesn't get half the attention He should.this Set Highlights His Strong Vocals which Pre-date what Peabo Bryson was doing&also His Songwriting talents.very on point set.
Great voice, Great man.......2001-12-01
Probably best known for his exquisite duet with the sadly-missed Judy Clay (Private Number), William Bell is still belting out the tunes. This collection does a pretty fair job of showcasing his singing and songwriting talents. However, his 1967 album "The Soul of a Bell" is required listening too.
I saw, and met, dear old William when he played the Jazz Cafe in London last year. He was on top form, and sang his heart out - even though there were only a hundred people or so in the audience. He introduced "Sharleen from Texas" to sing Private Number with him. She sang it beautifully - and it was only then that we realised she wasn't from Texas, but in it....

A seminal figure as R&B edged toward soul, Jackson took advantage of some of the best songs of the era from the likes of Bacharach-David- Hilliard, Goffin-King, and Leiber-Stoller. He showcases his authoritative baritone to perfection on songs like "I Wake Up Crying" and "Any Day Now." The latter in particular is a protosoul masterpiece, copied note-for-note by Elvis and others. The sixteen titles on this collection run the gamut of Jackson's Scepter-Wand hits from the slow-burning perfection of his revival of "Since I Don't Have You" to the gospel-inflected "Something You Got." Sadly, Jackson became a forgotten man in the soul revolution he had, in part at least, midwifed. --Colin Escott
Customer Reviews:
That cd is letting soul down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-18
I am very sorry but do not listen to the likes of brian dryburgh; this cd I believe has let soul music down. I like soul music as i like many types of music but this one? NO. If you want good music buy the blues brothers soundtrack!!!! or if you want be a little more adventurous buy a cd by the prodigy or Disturbed. I'm very disapointed with this it went straight in the bin.
Redundant.......2005-11-30
I've purchased this CD only for the song "Any Day Now". I'd first hear that tune on one of Luther Vandross' last CD's. I loved the way Luther sang it and didn't even know it was a remake until I heard the Chuck Jackson version on a oldie type radio show.
I loved the mans voice and got this CD hoping to find more vocal treasures such as that song.
Unfortunatley I did not find anything else as powerful or compelling on this CD. The remaining songs are a fine collection of uptown soul, but I can clearly see why Chuck Jackson got lost in the mix once real, deep soul emerged.
His voice is great....make no mistake. It's in the songs, the arrangements, the over the top background, the fluff of it all that his music failed to reach the mass audience of a Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and later, the Motown, and Stax artists.
Basically, every song on this CD has the same feel, and for the most part that entails a rather corny mix of schmaltzy songs.
If it weren't for the first 3 songs this wouldn't even make a 2 star rating.
Save your money on this one unless you're over 50 and a die hard Chuck Jackson fan.
Brilliant........2001-01-04
There's a lot of brilliant 60's/70's soul men : Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, Tyrone Davis, Wilson Pickett, ZZ Hill, Darell Banks, JJ Barnes, Jackie Wilson......Chuck Jackson is very definitely up there with the best of them.
Great collection, GREAT sound!.......2000-09-13
Without a doubt, these are some of the very best recordings to come out of New Yord in the 60s, and that's quite a statement. Luther Dixon was a great producer, and Sceptor was a great small label who really cared about the music. It shows in this collection. Oh, yeah, and there's Chuck Jackson, who's one of the greatest unknown soul singers.
Don't buy this if you don't want to turn into a fervant fan. The production, arrangements, songwriting and singing are as fine as the 60s produced. Period.
And Saraband/Varese did a whale of a job with the remastering. Wait until you hear "I Keep Forgetting." It will literally knock your socks off.
A must have for 60s pop/soul fans.
Chuck Jackson a musical genius........1999-08-23
I once had this album on an "8-track" back in the early 70's.After playing it over and over it finally broke after two years.I had been unable to find it until, thank goodness,amazon.com came alone. Although Chuck Jackson may never have reached the fame of some of his contemporaries, true Jackson fans(and they are legion)know he is truly a genius in the R&B/soul world of music. He was the heart and soul of the Dell-Vikings until going on his own. A good comparison would be Jackson's rendition of "Any Day Now"(included on this cd)with Ben E.King's rendering. There is really no comparison.Jackson sings every song as if it has personally happened to him.It would take a "cold" person to hear "Tell Him I'm Not Home" or "Any Other Way" and not get emotional and have personal memories come rushing back.

Outstanding Listening Pleasure.......2007-06-27
I have listened to the CD so often that it is a wonder I have not worn it out if that were possible.
master singer.......2007-01-22
All of my teenage years were in the 1960's, i was fortunate to listen to rock'n-roll, blues and soul in and urban city of D.C. The late walter Jackson was very special not because of his disability and singing, but the delivery and expression through out his phrasing. He told a story with beautiful tonement that vibrated with a sense of crying, begging and moaning for love of a woman. Only a true music lover and listner can appreciate the soul of a Walter Jackson.
Very Underrated Artist.......2002-02-15
I got to Hear His stuff when I was a Little boy thanks to My Mother.back then Radio gave everybody a chance&you had to bring the goods&Walter Jackson did.He had a Cool Vocal Delievery.the music is still very soulful&right on time.Artists like Him shouldn't be overlooked they have alot going for them if given a fair chance.
The best of Memories.......2000-04-12
I remember Walter's music from the '60's, especially this album which has nothing but great cuts. The soul that comes out of this man cannot be compared to anyone before or since...and the voice that transmits it is incomparable as well. It's truly unfortunate that the Walter Jackson discography is so limited, but 'Welcome Home', of itself, gives us an immensely satisfying taste of the man.
A magnificent collection from a premier artist........1999-08-12
No one can do it like Walter Jackson! His smooth, sensual voice and profound lyrics make you feel like he is in the room with you. You can feel his pain/pleasure in every song. Grab this CD - it is a collection of his best work. Listen to it with someone you love, grab the wine, and enjoy!

There's a reason it is only $5.98. They're rerecorded. Even Amazon disguises that they are rerecordings. The CD says so in white type in the lower left corner, but the Amazon repro of the label doesn't show it. Hmmmm... Don't waste time with this one, get the originals.

Sweet soul music of the highest caliber, the singles collected here--including classics like "Keep On Pushing," "Amen," and "People Get Ready"--were primarily the creation of singer-songwriter Curtis Mayfield, but they also feature gorgeous harmonies and occasional leads by Impressions Fred Cash and Samuel Gooden. And--bonus!--besides including most of the group's Mayfield-era hits, The Very Best also documents the Impressions' biggest post-Mayfield recording, "Finally Got Myself Together (I'm a Changed Man)." As an introduction to the group, in fact, this disc's only flaw is that it omits their heavenly 1958 hit "For Your Precious Love," with original lead Jerry Butler. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
The Impressions.......2007-02-13
Pure R&B at its finest. The whole CD is magnificent. I don't care what some may think, but I think Curtis Mayfield was the Godfather of Soul and here is where it really all started for him.
The greatest hits of the Impressions (with Curtis Mayfield).......2005-01-12
There are so many soul groups where one member was the lead singer from the start or where one singer became bigger than the group and went out on their own (e.g., Diana Ross and the Supremes). What made the Impressions different was that it produced two major stars in Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler (Fred Cash was the third member of the trio). Working out of Chicago and originally a doo-wop group called the Roosters, the Impressions had a distinctly different sound from the groups in Motown and Philadelphia. Their harmonies were lighter and the trios would trade off on the vocals, a gospel tradition that was rare for rhythm and blues groups. In terms of instrumentation Mayfield (who wrote almost all of the songs in this cllection) went for minimal guitars and understated rhythms, often with a Latin influence, all of which continued to give the Impressions a distinct sound.
Since "The Very Best of the Impressions" is a Rhino collection it is an excellent collection of the group's greatest hits with stellar liner notes by David Nathan. True fans of the group will quibble with the sixteen songs selected only because the deciding factor is how well they did on the soul charts rather than on their quality irrespective of chart success. The hits are arranged chronologically, from their early successes with "Gypsy Woman" and "It's All Right," when the group was a quintet rather than the trio it is best remembered as being, to the two songs by the Impressions that made it to #1 on the soul on the Black Singles chart were "Choice of Colors" (which asked the question, "If you had a choice of colors, which would you prefer, my brother?") and the post-Mayfield "Finally Got Myself Together (I'm A Changed Man)." In between are the classic tracks Mayfield wrote that were some of the first R&B songs to exhibit a strong social consciousness and reflect Mayfield's religious background.
The biggie here is "People Get Ready," which only made it to #14 on the Billboard chart but which was named by "Rolling Stone" magazine as the 24th greatest song of all-time. Mayfield wrote the song just before a march in Chicago led by Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1965. When the song was released churches in Chicago began singing their own version, which ironically changed the final lyrics so the song was more universal but less religious. The song would eventually be covered by Vanilla Fudge, Bob Dylan, the Chambers Brothers, Glen Campbell, Petula Clark, Rod Stewart, and Aretha Franklin, which certainly speaks to the scope of those who were moved by its message.
"Amen" and "Keep on Pushing" are in a similar religious vein, the former familiar because of Sidney Portier singing the old spiritual in "Lillies of the Field" and now rewritten by Mayfield and producer John W. Pate, Sr. The latter reflects the resolute attitude of the civil rights movement. Other songs reflect Mayfield's last years with the group, such as "We're a Winner," "This Is My Country," and "Check Out Your Mind." One song that I would have liked to have seen included is "Mighty, Mighty Spade & Whitey," the B-Side for "Choice of Colors" which received a lot of air-play because of its provocative title. But what is here is certainly representative of the Impressions, both in terms of their musical style and their cultural significance in the Sixties.
"The Very Best of the Impressions " My Type of Music!!.......2004-01-26
This album is what I need. It is very uplifting and brings back so many memories. We need this music today. It will never grow old, because the music relates to today's issues and concerns. Anyone wanting to relax and enjoy music how it was meant to be will not be disappointed!! I am definitely Old School! The "Impressions" keep it real....
Keep Your Head To The Sky!!
Contains all the Impressions songs I wanted........2002-10-01
This CD had all the obscure songs I wanted by the Impressions. It was the best I could ask for; the only reason I gave it 4 stars is their songwriting was not completely to my taste. "Fool For You" is great and I haven't heard that song since 1970. (That song's unusual sound comes from its uncommon 9/8 meter.) Other songs I remember from long ago are the social commentary song "Choice of Colors," "Amen," and "It's All Right."
very uplifting.......2000-03-09
