David Torn is a musical chameleon, moving effortlessly from soundtrack work to pop projects to edgy improv, extending his guitar with electronic programming, sampling, and overdubs. Here he sets out at the helm of an improvising quartet with some regular partners from the New York Downtown School (saxophonist Tim Berne, keyboard player Craig Taborn, and drummer Tom Rainey) and then transforms the results with live sampling and extended studio tinkerings until the present set of pieces emerge in all their fractured and compound glory. Sounds morph suddenly into other sounds—-funk into heavy metal, guitar into radio wave, drum into bass--and time stretches and contracts. The extended band tracks are scenes of continuous transformation, like "Structural Functions of Prezens" in which the naked acoustic sweetness of Berne's alto is eventually joined by its spectral, sampled other, or the rapid chatter of Rainey's drums is set against a world sinking in time, with tones oozing lower and drifting into stasis. David Torn's eagerly-awaited first ECM recording in 21 years is a sonic voyage that defies categories and blurs boundaries. Prezens is also the debut of a unique band featuring three of the most recognizable names in experimental jazz - Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey. The CD has all of the David Torn trademarks: multi-layered textures, thick chords, disruptions, distortions and hypnotic loops. On this Torn production, or "reconsideration" as he calls it, he wraps his sounds around those of his band mates, often taking apart their improvisations and reassembling them.

This IS experimental hard & inventive Torn.......2007-06-02

This Torn recording is closer to the likes of his ECM 1978 solo recording. If you are familiar with his work with Bowie and are expecting that, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED! David Torn is a musician's musician. This recording is often distorted in a free style kind of way... but it is not a grossly improvisational album. When I bought this album, I did not know what to expect. From his early days with ECM to his mid-eighties almost pop period to his exceptional studio work, I have come to appreciate Torn's "Unpredictability". From a technical perspective, this record is amazing and I do give it am overall 5 star rating. At times the sound is distorted guitars with a free style interplay amoungst the players. It often borders on the Avant-Guard yet the style almost bites you at times!

I expected a little more. There is a technological revolution behind guitars. Most evident is the possibility of looping and create loops over loops. I expected from Torn and ECM something more creative than "old time free jazz". What surprize me the most is the absence of any idea about rythm.

This album can do many things...
1. Unintentionally scare my girlfriend.
2. Make me stop and space out to those ethreal soft sections.
3. Clinch my teeth and sway to Torn's explosive solos on a couple of the tracks.
4. Knock the Wax out you ears.
5. Make the dog look at you funny.

Torn's "Cloud About Mercury" is pure Musical Zazen to me.
Prezens is even more out there, but for fans of this genre it should be sheer joy...and at least several Minutes of Pure Entertainment.

Torn tears it up!.......2007-05-22

'Prezens' is a gem of an experimental piece of eclectic, avant-garde jazz.

David integrates studio technique & real time playing with sampling and surgically precise electronic manipulation. I can understand why someone would not appreciate the apparent lack of f-l-o-w to the compositions...

...BUT I would also say that THAT crowd should play it safe and listen to Elton John or Billy Joel: safe, predictable and totally boring.

I played trumpet for 12 years and can improvise a bit myself. I say that because the ability to listen intensely to what's going on behind the music is a skill needed for Torn's latest offering. I've enjoyed and, mathematically, followed the flow of each Avant-Garde musical structure contained on Prezens via headphone as well as in my car. In fact, I took the long, meandering way home from work last week, in order to listen to 3 of the tracks again: 'Neck Deep...', 'Ever More Other' & 'Ring for Endless Travel'.

If you dig the likes of Ornette Coleman's 'Song X', Bill Frisell's 'Unspeakable'. Medeski-Martin & Woods 'Friday Afternoon...' or edgier stuff by Triosk or Jan Jelinek, then this disc is for you. If not, again, stick to more "traditional" fare.

As for me, I'm gonna' give it another listen right NOW!

brilliance uncut.......2007-05-21

This is torn at his kaleidoscopic, incindiary best. More ideas in a single track than you'll hear on most albums. "Prezens" bursts with infectious grooves, exotic flavas and exuberant energy. More than anything, though, there is a kind of genre-bending humour here, if Fatboy could play the guitar like Hendrix, it would sound something like this. Best of all this feels like a band album, and when the four guys rock, THEY ROCK.

Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

Miles Davis Meets King Crimson On The Moon.......2007-05-17

David Torn probably eats Frippertronics for breakfast. On "Cloud About Mercury", Torn is guitarist extraordinaire and primary composer (with just two group exceptions). Make no mistake about it, though - in between the atmospheric intro and outro, this is a group effort through and through. Was it Torn's original idea to assemble this particular collective? Or was ECM just giving him some "business-friendly" collaborative options? Twenty some years after the March 1986 sessions, it simply doesn't matter. This is great music-making that makes for endlessly great listening, not to mention frequent studious inspections of air-worthiness.

Mark Isham was the heir apparent to Miles Davis in the 80's (before any of us really knew who Wallace Roney was), willing to play acoustic (or minimally treated) trumpet in diverse electric settings, showing off his technical panache along with considerable writing chops on projects like his Windham Hill debut "Vapor Drawings" (1983), Group 87 (1983-85), "Stiletto" with Michael Shrieve (and Torn) on RCA Novus (1989), and a small but substantial scattering of releases under his own name on Virgin and Columbia throughout the 90's. Isham was no doubt a co-inspirator to current contenders for the throne like Dave Douglas (who was probably about 23 when this record was made). His crystal clear trumpet smear here in the glare of Torn's eclectic conception stands in stark contrast to some of the movie soundtrack fluff that he would subsequently make, but hey, you gotta put food on the table too, right?

Bill Bruford plays outstanding electronic percussion here and everywhere, but that doesn't mean there's no acoustic kit within ear's reach. His monstrosity on anything he cares to touch continues unabated. The batterie is in good hands anytime Mr. Bruford is in the house. (Never have heard him play piano - does he? He's such an excellent composer in his own right - wonder what he writes on - marimba perhaps?)

Tony Levin is not constantly there in the mix, but when he is, it is a presence to be reckoned with, as usual. There is an otherworldly kind of plasticity to his mega-phat (as in "admirable") low end. Could be the Stick - could just be him. In fact, if Adrian Belew or some other cosmic brother of his were here as well (or in place of Isham), it would be very hard not to call this unit Son Of Latter-Day King Crimson.

Is this a perfect 5-star album? Well, if you're a perfectionist, probably not. But I can't hear anything out of place, no playing that is less than well executed, and no section, solo or ensemble, that does not delight in some way. There's a rugged grittiness to the whole, which is not entirely out of character for ECM ship's captain Manfred Eicher, but that is certainly ballsier fare than we're used to hearing from that label (not counting some Pat Metheny or Terje Rypdal albums. Can I get away with using that word here?). If you dig this platter and crave more of the same, or thereabouts, Stiletto by former Santana drummer Shrieve has him in place of Bruford (turns out fair), Andy Summers of Police-fame alongside Torn (both shred), Isham as noted above, and Scandinavian heavy Terje Gewelt where Levin was (4 stars). For an extra dose of Levin's Stick on display where you'd least expect it, right there next to the late lamented Michael Brecker, check out the final track on the all-around commendable Steps Ahead album Modern Times from 1984 (5 stars).

Reviewed from the original 1987 domestic (US) CD release, which sounds fairly clean to these highly tweaked ears. Guessing that means the freshly re-mastered edition from 2001 must sound immaculate. Can I raise my stars to > 5 once CAM's been re-added to the collection? Apparently I'll try just about anything, as do these four amazing musicians.

Music for the expansive thinker.......2006-11-17

I bought this on vinyl, when it was first released in 1986. I had never heard anything like it, and soon I'd played the album until the grooves wore through to the other side. It was a great stepping stone that lead from the world of progressive rock into the realm of jazz. Mark Isham's horn work was like faint, echoey memories of Miles Davis from my childhood. It combined so effortlessly with Torn's guitarscapes, the likes of which I had never heard before, and Levin and Bruford provided a rhythm section that was a familiar friend, guiding me into uncharted territoty; expanding my appreciation of aural space. Some 21 years later, I still find this album to be both fresh and refreshing. This recording is the documentation of a rare and successful culmination of seemingly disparate parts, reflecting creative spontaneity and integrity.

David Torn Comes Into His Own Here.......2005-03-08

This is the disc where David Torn really found his niche and his sounds!

Armed with some up-to-date technology for the time (1987), Dave wrote to Bill Bruford (after seeing him play with King Crimson) and asked him if he'd like to try recording, thankfully, the answer was YES! Before long, Tony Levin came into the picture with his Chapman Stick and so did trumperter Mark Isham.

Improvisation plays a major role in this outing although there are some more composed segments, like the brilliant, "3 Minutes of Pure Entertainment" which in reality is several minutes of fiery brilliance punctuated by a snaky unison melodic figure from Torn and Isham.

Torn alone commands a huge tonal palette utilizing a Steinberger guitar and all manner of digital looping and delay implements, plus an improvised koto-like instrument made out of a junky old guitar (used on the opening cut "Suyafhu Skin/Snapping The Hollow Reed", which also features some very unique percolating melodic figues generated by Bill Bruford on electronic drums. Dave lets loose with grand soaring melodies here before charging into an apocolyptic conclusion. "Mercury Grid", another one of the more structured pieces shines brightly as Mark Isham's trumpet is featured heavily here as Dave unleashes and extrudes other-worldly and ghostly chordal swells underneath.

From "The Previous Man" onwards, the pieces are more loose and improvisational with each musician contributing equally, no-one dominating the proceedings. Dave really puts his looping skills to the test here as well as unleashing searing melodies and angry fusillades of noise at times. The disc however does end on a quiet meditative note.

People who had heard his earlier playing (for example with Everyman Band in the early 80's) sometimes compared him to Allan Holdsworth, NOT SO HERE!!! Dave really found his own style and sounds. Listen to this and have your mind expanded!

Completely missed the mark.......2003-02-24

Unlike the other reviewers, I found this CD a major letdown. I have been interested in The looper guitar thing for awhile. This music seems very re-hashed stuff. Some of the drum and bass lines are good, but Torn should lose the whammy bar! I'm sure he's a better guitarist than this. Sounds to me like poor Eddie Van Halen copies!

One of Best Albums I Own.......2002-11-16

Wow! ... I believe that Clouds About Mercury is David Torn's best work. I count it as one of the creative avant-garde guitar albums ever and, quite frankly, despite his great work since, I have not heard David Torn reproduce arrangements that are as cohesive and flow as well as they do on Clouds. Bill Bruford is also brilliant on this album. If you like his drumming on the early Earthworks albums, you'll like the amazing electronic percussion that meld perfectly with the melodies and harmonies. Clouds About Mercury is a must-buy for any avant-grade jazz, progressive, or electronic guitar enthusiast. Ordinarily I would give 'good' albums a 3 or 4, but this one is definitely a five.

Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic produce fine performances of a selection of Herrmann's post-1955 film scores.

The music itself is of variable musical interest.
The music from "The Man who Knew too Much", "Vertigo", "Marnie", "North by Northwest", "Taxi Driver" and "Psycho" shows Herrmann at his best.
"Torn Curtain" and "Fahrenheit 451" find Herrmann at his least inspired and it is a pity Salonen didn't jettison these items in favour of something else.

The performances cannot be faulted and lovers of Herrmann's music will find much to enjoy here.

Classic, at reduced price.......2006-08-15

As much (if not more) than any other film composer, Bernard Herrmann's music stands up to listening independent of the films. The emphasis here is on Herrmann's scores for Hitchcock, when both men were arguably at their creative heights.

Note: this is NOT a collection of original soundtrack recordings. However, Salonen and the LA Philharmonic at absolutely top-notch, and the recording is beautiful. Certain subtleties are actually easier to hear on this recording than on some of the originals.

As if I couldn't recommend this highly enough, the price has been reduced on this reissue! This deserves a wide audience, don't hesitate to buy it.

Beyond description........2005-04-12

"Polytown" is one of those projects that you sort of hope would evolve into something more-- this trio, guitarist David Torn, bassist Mick Karn, and drummer Terry Bozzio, produced such a superb record of instrumental music that you couldn't help but wish there was a followup, but this is all we got.

And its quite a statement-- the three of them play together fantastically-- not a surprise given they'd worked together extensively-- the music has an improvised feel to it, even in obviously composed passages, the music has a nice looseness and spaciousness to it-- Bozzio in particular seem really open with his playing-- whereas most "rock" drummers (although calling this music that) tend to play themselves into a wall, space is critical on this record-- check out the brilliant "Snail Hair Dune" for a good example of this-- Torn and Karn largely play single note lines while Bozzio implies as well as states.

With this looseness, the album covers a number of sounds and feels-- the playing is superb, and there's really not a bad track on here, but some stand out-- the great "Honey Sweating", with Torn's guitar blasts, the slow, funky "Bandaged by Dreams" (with one of my favorite Karn basslines), percussion driven "Warrior Horsemen of the Spirit Thundering Over Hills of Doubt to a Place of Hope" and the simply brilliant "Red Sleep" all come to mind.

Any fan of either of these three gentlemen will love this album-- its certainly amongst the best work by each of them, but I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys improvised music and great musicianship.

In The Studio.......2005-01-19

I had the unique pleasure of being on hand for the birth of this masterpiece. I owned the recording studio (White Crow) where it was recorded in Vermont. In the studio's twelve year life, this project took the cake as the most creative we experienced. (Others included Phish and Alice Cooper) The album was completely conceived in the studio, melodies and rhythms being invented in the lounge over lunch without instruments. When something began to cook, these three mad scientists sprinted into the studio and began putting it down.

Torn's guitar collection for the session was only to be outdone by Bozzio's "drum kit" which arrived in a 24-foot truck and took up most of the main studio. Among other things, Bozzio set up two octaves of roto toms so that he could trade melodies with Torn. That's the level these guys were operating on.

Polytown continues to be one of my favorite recordings.

Proto-BLUE.......2000-09-28

Bought this in search of other material like Bruford Levin's Upper Extremities, and it comes close. Damn close.

Karn's fretless electric bass is Jaco-with-attitude, and Bozzio plays some mighty big drums. All of his heads are damped down so they hit with (to coin a phrase) an "ominous thud." And of course Torn is the guitar that does not sleep.

This is Group 87 brought into the 90's, or King Crimson if Fripp still had integrity. This is music of such ferocity and determination that it might just cause the rest of your collection to whither in shame.

Grapple with it.

A One Off Tour de Force.......2000-05-12

What happens when you take Zappa alum Terry Bozzio, former Japan bassist Mick Karn, and avante-god David Torn? A wild sonic ride through something that has pieces of jazz, pan-ethnic fusion, and instrumental prowess that few can touch. The compositions are sharp and well produced, with ample space to hear Karns fluid Middle Eastern style fretless work, as well as Bozzio doing some phenomenal orchestration for percussion.

Awesome voice, exquisite performances.......2006-08-27

These two CDs contain a great selection of classical, operatic and folk songs in English, German and Italian by the famous contralto (1912 - 1953). Highlights on the first CD include What Is Life from Orfeo et Euridice, Art Thou Troubled from Rodelina, Woe Unto Them and O Rest In The Lord from Elijah and the traditional song Blow The Wind Southerly.

My personal favorites appear on the second CD. The first is the divine Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, the Ben Jonson poem, which is a most mystical and transcending listening experience. The buoyant Stuttering Lovers is most catchy and appealing. Both of the aforementioned are sung to the piano accompaniment of pianist Phyllis Spurr.

Backed by the London Philharmonic, Ferrier renders splendid versions of Father Of Heaven from Judas Maccabaeus and O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion from The Messiah. These are truly awesome, the first one slow and somber, the second joyous and triumphant. Other highlights on this second CD include He Was Despised from The Messiah and All Is Fulfilled from St John Passion by Bach.

The informative CD booklet contains black and white photographs, a short biography in English, French and German, plus complete information on the recording of the tracks: composers, dates, venues, conductors and musicians. Kathleen Ferrier was a unique vocalist who made a magnficent contribution to classical and folk music.

It may take you a little time to love her voice.......2004-08-19

Kathleen Ferrier has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music. And it's a voice that might take you time to love. As an eight year old I heard her version of Blow the Wind Southerly many times on British radio and intensely disliked it. I wasn't sure if it was a man or a woman, adult or child, such is the nature of her contralto. But over the years, especially hearing Ferrier sing Handel and Mahler, I've come to treasure her recordings alongside Callas, Sutherland, Flagstad and Baker. This two disc set contains performances which are about 45-55 years old. Many favourites are here especially the folk songs and selections from Bach, Handel and Mahler. The sound quality is excellent. The sleeve notes mention that Ferrier's vocal delivery may sound old fashioned to our ears. But her remarkable voice which stirs one's deepest emotions, transcends any thought of quaintness or mannerism. She is, quite simply, the greatest contralto ever. This selection will have you seeking out her other recordings on Amazon.com. And it might also lead you to Virginia Rodrigues, a Brazilian contralto with a superb voice who, like Ferrier, makes everything she sings, her own.

Its been along time since i've listen to this. The premier music services do not offer it for dowload, so i broke down and brought the album...Still sounds awesome. Klay Scott/Scot albert or whoever he is on this album, shows his uncanny ability to mix the most opposite of sounds to produce a very powerful mix. As you can imagine from the cd cover art (the term "dont judge a book by its cover" does not apply in this case) indicates that the overall feel is one of retribution and bitterness. If your not overly sensitive to this and love metal/industrial/samples, this cd is for you.

Playing Time - 33:45 -- Resophonic guitarist Randy Kohrs is a well-known Nashville session musician who has also released three previous solo album projects. Pure instrumental bliss.......2005-12-17

My goodness, what an album! Glenn Snelwar (who I am previously familiar with only through his contributions to Sean Malone's Gordian Knot) has put together the ideal trio here for bringing to life his compositions, in bassist Michael Manring (Attention Deficit, Sadhappy, etc.) and drummer Mark Zonder (Fates Warning). The music is very much in the vein of the Gordian Knot projects: all instrumental, heavily composed, ethereal and moody, with an emphasis on atmosphere over pyrotechnics. Make no mistake, the musicianship is peerless, but this is not an exercise in musicianship over and above composition, as some supergroups sometimes seem to be (some have criticized the Liquid Tension Experiment projects for this, for example).

This project is a particularly nice showcase for Manring's stunning fretless bass work. The man can bring forth sounds from his Zon Hyperbass that will give you chills.

I really cannot recommend this album highly enough for anyone who is a fan of excellent compositions and top-notch musicianship. What a treat.

I agree with the previous posting -- although I am disappointed to know I am not the only one with the restraining order. Mark's work on this CD is every bit as good as the Zimmerman project Under_Radio. And if you liked Chromakey then pick this one up. Mark has come a long way since the Ken Bomber album or the Thunderchild days (with all due respect to all Warlord fans). Can't wait for the TEMPLEWITHIN release.

Torn Between Genres.......2005-08-15

A great album... it flows/rocks/moves/electrifies... from start to finish. The only negative comment is that the last song could have ended sooner. My opinion is slightly biased because I think Zonder is a drum god. I think this is his best work outside of Fates Warning (don't worry Mark, I know the restrictions of the restraining order).

Top-Notch Grooves.......2005-08-14

These guys are awesome. Although it reminds me in some ways of the Gordian Knot music, it lends it's own unique spin on high-tech futuristic instrumental fusion music. It is melodic too. The guitarist even sounds at times like Robert Fripp or David Torn. Nice ideas that are a pleasure to hear. I am also a long-time fan of Micheal Manring and his bass playing adds alot to this music. The biggest surprise was definately to see Fates Warning drummer Mark Zonder playing this stuff. I love Fates Warning's music too, but it definately leans more towards Prog-Metal type stuff. So to see him venturing out into this style of music was very interesting. Although I guess it is not all that surprising since guitarist Jim Matheos of Fates Warning has played not only on the Gordian Knot CDs, but also with OSI as well. All these guys just keep putting out the most advanced, most interesting music on the planet. I absolutely love it and cannot get enough of it.

A recipe for good instrumental prog........2005-06-03

This album features Glenn Snelwar who did guitar work with Gordian Knot and Mark Zonder who was the drummer for Fates Warning. How would I describe it? Take 1 cup of Gordian Knot, 1/4 cup mellow Dream Theater, 2 tablespoons of Fates Warning, 1 teaspoon of Spiral Architect, and blend with Mark Zonder's "Pleasant Shade of Grey" drumming. What do you get. A really cool instrumental prog. rock album.
