Fiddler on the Roof is one of Broadway's great classics. Based on the tales of Sholem Aleichem, the musical tells the humorous and heartbreaking story of the milkman Tevye as he tries to maintain the simplicities of his traditional life even as his daughters grow up and Russia heads toward revolution. Many of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's songs have become touchstones of popular culture, including "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "Sunrise, Sunset." As Tevye, Zero Mostel leads--and at times dominates--the original 1964 Broadway cast, displaying irrepressible swagger and bluster. A young Julia Migenes plays his middle daughter, Hodel, while those who only know Bert Convy as a game-show host will be surprised by his pleasant voice as her suitor. The CD includes two previously unreleased songs but no lyrics. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars The original first time way..........2007-05-09

I really love Topol in the role of Tevye, but he wasn't in the original broadway cast and Mr. Mostel created the role. Back then original cast albums were usually recorded on the Sunday after the opening. So this is really fresh stuff.

This is simply THE classic recording of a classic musical. I like the intimacy of the pit orchestra over the inflated version on the soundtrack (as soundtracks almost always are).

If I were a rich man, this is still the recording I would own.

5 out of 5 stars Sure Miss Zero.......2007-01-08

What a great soundtrack and what a great play. Once you reacquaint yourself with it, you will be singing and humming the tunes for weeks and weeks....you just can't help it.

5 out of 5 stars One Of A Kind.......2006-07-28

Fiddler On The Roof is one of the greatest of all musicals. A flawless book, remarkable score and wonderful performances.
Zero Mostel was one of those larger than life personalities the likes of whom we don't have anymore. Mostel, Merman, Channing, Bert Lahr...they didn't so much create a role as embody it with their personalities, but they were so huge, the result would be thrilling. Tevye was tailor made for Mostel, loud, comic and ultimately endearing. The kind of role he was a master at adapting himself too.
This recording captures all of that beautifully. The entire cast is wonderful. (Bea Arthur as Yente!!) Though some great actors replaced Mostel on Boadway, Herschel Bernardi, Harry Goz, most recently Alfred Molina, etc. and they created different and more realistic portrayals, it was Mostels signiture role and it's a gem.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic.......2006-07-25

This musical is so very beautiful. The music is fantastic. Of course my favorite song is Sunrise, Sunset. I highly recommend this recording to anyone who is interested in musical theatre. You can play this CD over and over again for years to come and still enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Great!!! .......2006-06-17

I would give this c.d. 4 and 3/4 stars if I could. Three reasons why it is not 5 is that it doesn't include "Tevye's Monologue", "Tevye's Rebuttal", and (My most favorite song out of the show) "Chavaleh." I could live without the first two but the c.d. just seems to be missing something without "Chavaleh." But otherwise I love this c.d.

P.S. Let us pray the rerelease this album with the missings songs.

4 out of 5 stars Cramer Christmas!.......2003-07-06

Floyd added his touch to everything-country, blues, rock, pop, gospel, classics-you name it! In this release from the prime of his career, Floyd takes on Christmas standards. Not too much to say because if you like Floyd and Christmas, it's a marriage made in Heaven, however, over 1/2 of these are medleys and not the full versions. Finally, though, one of his RCA Lp's get the royal treatment!

4 out of 5 stars Pickin' By Jerry Reed.......2005-03-14

This is Jerry Reed at his craft.Although,he isn't heard much on the radio these days-if at all. This full-lengh cd is just a sample of what the man has up his sleave. This cd is a breath of fresh air to hear. His talent is top-notch,his style unmatched,Jerry delivers the goods on this 1999 effort. This is a must for any Jerry Reed Fan.Great fun songs that only he could write, perform and inject with such style and mastery on the guitar.I gave this cd 4 star rating for the fun, talented, creative writing and of course the "Pickin'".The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I wish that this cd was longer and had more songs. What can I say- I'm a True Jerry Fan!Get this cd,you won't be sorry!

      4 out of 5 stars Reed's Back.......1999-02-24

First Water Boy, then the Old Dogs project, now this, Reed's first feature-length album in 12 or so years. This boy doesn't get retirement. Jerry sings on half the songs (the odd-numbered ones, to be precise), and picks on the others. As with the LPs from his halcyon days in the 1970s, the instrumentals slow things down a touch. But, it's good to hear him getting away from the novelty numbers and back to some serious singing and strumming. OK, it's not likely to make anyone's desert island list (although Reed's Georgia Sunshine LP from 1970 makes mine), and it's not going to get played on any country radio stations. But, if you've appreciated Jerry's work in the past, you'll agree it's refreshing to hear him recording again.

      5 out of 5 stars Great 80's Alternative.......2007-05-23

Everytime I hear a radio station brag about playing the best of the 80's, I think of groups like Missing Persons. Unfortunately they usually end up playing Huey Lewis or Madonna or Michael Jackson. Anyway, when I think of the 80's, I think of a group like Missing Persons, who address the emptiness of so much of the 80's culture. With their own unique sound, they create an edge, a groove. The guitars slide and bite and sneak in and out, the keyboards create ethereal atmosphere and the vocals can snarl or lilt. Lamenting the alienation and loneliness of our times, these songs say as much today as they did so many years ago: "What are words for when no one listens anymore?"

5 out of 5 stars Timeless classic, and helped get rid of disco........2007-04-06

I clearly remember what I was doing in life when this album was released. That awful disco stuff that dominated my high-school years in the late 1970's was still hanging on, and we really really needed a "new wave" to wash that stuff away.

Well, this was a "new tidal wave" on the pop music charts and it set the tone for popular music throughout the 80's. What a wonderful blast from the past as I'm listening to it right now. I really was just looking to see if a new edition had been released since I bought this CD, and lo and behond this CD is out of print and going for big bucks on the used market.

Well, color me surprised! If it doesn't get pressed again it will likely go higher in price from here. It's an '80s iconic recording after all.

      5 out of 5 stars Landmark..........2006-09-30

A landmark first effort indeed from a band that so deftly straddled several musical genres, including be-bop, Zappa (a genre of its own!), classic and hard rock, and synth pop. Take on 'Noticeable One,' 'Tears,' and 'Bad Streets' for the New Wave headbangers that they are, and then you'll be ready to jump aboard the mothership, leaving 'Words' behind, heading into deep space,'Destination Unknown.' Oh, the fun you will have! If you don't already own it, consider yourself among those 'missing' -- out!

      5 out of 5 stars Smartest Monkeys.......2006-03-20

Discussing intelligence is all relative. I don't even think that it is measurable. We all just have different experiences, but when somebody calls Graham Parker intelligent I just cringe. The guy writes a pro life song and he isn't even a women last time I checked. Men are idiots if they think they can take a stance on this issue. Only women experience abortion. Therefore only they have a right to take a stand. Not only this, but his argument is filled with cliches that speak from an elementary school education. The songs here by Missing Persons are the most intelligent pop songs ever written. They never resort to archaic, ignorant explanations of existence, like souls and gods. Parker uses them to no end, not understanding the human brain(responsible for all behavior. It changes and becomes a new entity everyday with every experience. All behavior depends on outside stimulation) or evolution(survival of the fittest means that which fits into the environment, NOT the strongest, fastest, smartest, etc...) one bit, he will never write a song as "deep" as "Destination Unknown", "Walking In LA", "Windows", "Words", etc... There is a lot of filler on this one, but "The Noticable Ones" are some of the best pop songs ever written.

      5 out of 5 stars 80s new wave brilliance!.......2006-01-12

Missing Persons are probably the best group to come from Boston (aside from New Kids on the Block). Dale Bozzio, an ex-Playboy bunny, is exceedingly talented and a great singer. You have to get this and quick!

DJ Bobby B steps away from KMK for another side project. Only this time he reunites with Cringe, Minus One, and Tristate, his old bandmates in his pre-Kottonmouth Kings group, The Nayborhoods to put out The Hidden Treasures Vol. 1. This album is an excellent work of underground hip hop. I really love the more melodic sound of it, which makes it stand out from the usual stuff out there. Choice cuts: If This Were, Get Cash(feat. Johnny Richter), Goin` Down, and I(Blame It On).

I too saw them open for the Toasters and Mephiskaphelis when I lived in Hawaii and they did put on a better show. The lead singer let me buy her a beer after their set. This CD is a must for any ska fan or someone needing a reason to like ska.

I also saw these guys live opening for The Specials. No offense but Red Session was much better. This is by far the best SKA albulm I own. One of the few that I will turn on and not skip any tracks.

      4 out of 5 stars Quality Ska.......2002-05-08

If you like Ska, this album is a must have. I stumbled across these guys when I lived in Hawaii, and they rock! They are a local Hawaii Ska band that put on a hell of a show. Loaded with groovin' tunes like, Jungle, and Tree, these guys are smokin'. Scoop it up if you're looking for some good Ska that doesn't have a cheesy mainstream sound.

This is the BEST album Jerry Reed ever recorded!!!
I'd worn out my LP years ago & have looked & looked
for a replacement, so I was thrilled to find this
      rerelease on CD.
If you like guitar, you will LOVE this album, which
is on tracks 13-23 of this CD!!!

There is only one Jerry Reed ! His amazing guitar antics onsongs like "Swarmin" and "Freeborn Man" areincredible. This is also a great album for drummers and bass players. This is a swamp/country groove fest ! To think this came out in 1968 is mind blowing. His playing is still... well you decide, BUY THIS CD !
