Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Customer Reviews:
Tomlinson and Kent's "Lyrics" Worth Listening.......2006-12-23
Prime Cuts: I Got Lost in His Arms, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, Jardin D'Hiver
Stacey Kent does not need to raise a ruckus to impress; her warm velvetry girlish vocals need no gimmicks to convey the subtle meaning of each tune. She has a way of unfurling the emotions of each note with her attenuated vocal inflections. However, such a treat was not the intial vision of this project when British husband Jim Tomlinoson, a tenor saxophoist in the eminent tradition of Stan Getz, wanted "The Lyric" to be his solo project. However, slowly from his wife Stacy Kent's nascant involvement, it developed into Kent handling the lion share of the vocals, tackling 11 out of 13 tracks. In hindsight, such a move has been felicitious, as together they have weaved together a masterful tapestry of contemporary jazz; a collection of well chosen standards performed in an intimate and engaging way. Further acknowledgement of the duo's arete simpatico is affirmed when this disc won the prestigious "Album of the Year" award in the 2006 BBC Jazz awards festival.
Unlike most standard albums, the songs are impeccably chosen from a panoply of sources, some of which even crossing linguistic boundaries, with others from classical musicals and the great American songbook. Most propitious is Kent's cover of the Parisian chanteuse Keren Ann's "Jardin D'Hiver." Here, Kent sings as if French is her mother tongue. When Kent deals with the ominous oeuvre of the musicals, "Surrey with the Fringe on Top," a beloved song from the musical "Oklahoma," is a glorious choice. Kent wastes no syllable of this extremely lyrically verbose song. Giving each syllable a meditatively new breadth of life, this jazz diva certainly brings out a new texture of appreciation. On Frank Sinatra's "What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life," Kent takes her leisure to entice and seduce assisted by her husband's consenting sensuous saxophone swirls. While on the undulating ode to romantic abandonment, "I Got Lost in His Arms" is the perfect exemplar of how Kent utilizes subtlety and inference to exude the hopelessly romantic tenor of the composition.
However, unlike her peer Diana Krall who has given herself to a completely languid late night approach on her latest CD, Kent does pick up her heels for some sassy bossa nova. Her take on South Pacific's "A Cockeyed Optimist" exudes with life and vitality. Though her girlish twirls may come across as weak, Kent ironically captures the naivety and sincerity of Cole Porter's swinging "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." On the couple of tracks without Kent, the quartet of Tomlinson, David Newton (piano), Dave Chamberlain (bass) and Matt Skelton (drums) give a breezy performance on "Manha de Carnival" and a lazy-jazz lounge feel to "Outra Vez."
Overall, the spotlight of "The Lyric" is rightly on Kent: the ingenious ways in which she woos with her vocal nuances without given to drama. Yet Kent puts in enough emotions and rumination that she does not come across as blithe or superficial. However, behind the great woman is her man--Tomlinson's spot on backing never for a moment intrude. Rather, creating just the right texture that exemplifies his wife's vocals, this shows what a marriage of like-mindedness can do. In short, when it comes to contemporary jazz, Kent and Tomlison are as deserving as the accolades they have had received.

Customer Reviews:
a nice little EP.......2000-09-30
I must confess that except for the DJ Spooky/Quoit split 10" on the Manifold label, I don't know drum 'n bass at all (not yet). So I guess my opinion is not worth much, but I hope I can get some people to buy this album who are, just like me, not familiar to this style of music. Anyway, about the EP: it's great, with some atmospheric tunes, and always exciting song structures. I also like the conversations between the man and the wife, which are nicely fit in the music. I really don't know what DnB "experts" think of this album, but I think it's definitely worth getting. Enjoy!
Inventive hardcore DnB.......2000-08-24
I thought drum and bass was dead until I got this EP by Rephlex- favourive Ovuca. He is a Finnish guy who really knows the craft of producing freaky danceable beats... This single contains really funny (but short) conversations between a man and his wife (Q: You're up early this morning? A: I don't want to be late for my business meeting in Manchester!). It's just like when we are thought the English language outside England/US. Then a harsh uptempo DnB beats and heavy bass-sounds come in - - like Bogdan Raczynski, but more soft and with structure. Highly recommended!

Ms. Kent Marked the 100th Anniversary of Richard Rodger's Birth with this Stellar Reading of Some of his Greatest Tunes, her Fifth Recorded Opus. While She Has Recorded in the 1990's and Beyond, her Stylings Would Perfectly Fit in Alongside Other Jazz Greats of Norman Granz's Verve Label of the 1950's. Her Performances Are True, Honest and Direct, as Are all her Albums. She Makes it Seem So Effortless with her Boundless Natural Vocal Talent. This Japanese Version features Different Artwork.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely sublime.......2002-12-18
Once again, Stacey Kent has defied the odds and come out with an album that is better than all her previous ones. Featuring the great music of Richard Rodgers, Stacey and her band bring fresh interpretations such as a gentle bossa beat (courtesy of Colin Oxley's elegant guitar) to "It Might As Well Be Spring" or a very fun, feminist reading of "I'm Going To Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair." Stacey's voice is in great form, and hubby Jim Tomlinson's tenor sax is as intimate as ever (and check out his lovely flute work on "Bali Hai") Too bad we are limited to only five stars..."Dreamsville" was at least six, and this one should be seven. The only complaint is we have to get the imports from either Japan or the UK.
Oh my my.......2002-11-22
If hear "Easy to Remember" without getting goosebumps get your goosebump-o-meter repaired.
She's Done It Again!!!.......2002-07-17
Stacey Kent Has Made A Loyal Fan Of Me!! This Celebration Of Richard Rodgers Music Is Simply Wonderful!!! Stand Out Tracks Are: SHALL WE DANCE, THOU SWELL, THIS CAN"T BE LOVE & MANHATTAN. She Is Also Featured On Her Husband's BRAZILIAN SKETCHES Cd, Which Is Also Wonderful!! What A Team!! Hey Stacey, How About A Christmas Cd?? Thanks For The Great Music-David aka A FAN
Bewitching.......2002-06-30
Its not often American Artists take the shores of England so to heart let alone marry a native but fate blessed us twice and we are blessed with the warm glow of Stacey's voice. As a popular British radio producer once said "I could listen to Stacey Kent sing morning, noon and night, from now to eternity" and boy did he capture her essence so beautifully.
Stacey has grown and developed as an artist and her voice is compelling. This her latest release is a tender captivating performance dedicated to the work of Richard Rodgers, an album following her predictable pattern. Those familiar with Ms Kent will know that from the moment her works hit the player there's no shadow of a doubt about the quality of the songs she sings. And to sing tunes and words of those all time greats is a daunting task. It takes real talent to capture their essence, essentially repackage them and sell them to a discerning audience. It requires a strong confidence in one's art, a confidence in one's uniqueness. Her polish is unwavering and I'm still bewitched from experiencing one of her live performances recently. Stacey Kent has a distinctive voice, superb pitch and an alluring style which is hard to resist. This album doesn't have a single disappointing moment and oozes perfection throughout. I particularly enjoyed her interpretation of "Shall We Dance" and " Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.
Quality stuff.......2002-06-18
The subtitle `music of Richard Rogers' guarantees the high musical quality of the songs on this album, and Stacey's interpretations are as beguiling as ever. Besides the standards, she tackles a couple of songs not usually given jazz treatments, with a delightful version of `Shall We Dance' from The King and I. Stacey is my favorite of the young jazz vocalists around today. Being based in the UK, she isn't as well known in the States as she should be. If you like Diana Krall and Jane Monheit, you should check her out. Her husband Jim Tomlinson on tenor sax contributes a beautiful lyrical version of `It Never Entered My Mind', and her regular band wraps her voice in a warm backing sound, Colin Oxley's discreet guitar work being notable.
