Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Nice suprise.......2007-03-03

I became a Kylie fan late in the game. I didn't know what to expect from this album, just ordered it because I like her. I have to say that I love it. If you have just heard FEVER and BODY LANGUAGE you are in for a surprise. If you like the dancefloor radio ready music of those releases (BTW, I LOVE both of thos albums as well) you may not like this right off, but the more I listen the more I love it. I already loved Kylie but this album made me realize there is more to her than I knew about. And, I like it. Give it a try......

ONE of her best.......2006-07-29

The album featues a wide range of songs. From the indie "Some Kind OF Bliss" to the magical "Breathe", and the wicked "Dreams", this is my qual favourite Kylie album, with Light Years.

Kylie Did It Again.......2006-05-01

This is a deep cd. a lot of people like to label this as an "indie rock" cd. i say that this is kylie, but more on a personal level. here's the track list
1. too far - some deep lyrics. love the music and vocals
2. cowboy style - this is one of the indie rock tracks. great song
3. some kind of bliss - love the song.
4. did it again - another indie rock song, but i still love it.
5. breathe - one of my favorites. really hypnotic song
6. say hey - i love the music
7. drunk - another favorite song. pretty deep lyrics. starts off with dark music and ends lighter
8. i don't need anyone - love it. faster rock!
9. jump - sounds more like a slow r&b song. sexy
10. limbo - love the music, deep lyrics once again.
11. through the years - slower r&b feel. love the sax
12. dreams - the closing of the album. great song to end with
one of the greatest cds kylie's ever made. everyone should have this cd

AMAZING!.......2006-03-21

This cd is incredible- there is so much more to Kylie than what America knows!!!

Kylie's best by far.......2005-10-14

In my opinion, Kylie reached her creative peak with this album; it was original, creative, dark, and Kylie wrote all of these songs. Which other album do you know that combines orchestration, trip-hop beats, pop, dance, hip-hop, alternative and sex? I know not many.....

It is such a shame that Kylie stilldoesn't release music as original as this. Her sales may not be as high if she released catchy pop songs like Spinning Around - which the listener may get sick of when heard multiple times - but this album is very durable - Her more diehard fans will enjoy it more - I never thought I would see such creative, and complex, songs like Through The Years or Say Hey as a highlight, but after many listens, I now (with Jump, Too Far and Dreams, my two favourite Kylie songs), consider them to be in my top-10 favoutite Kylie song list, not that there is one.

The only songs I don't like is I Don't Need Anyone - it just doesn't fit in between the inaccessible tracks Drunk and Jump. And Some Kind Of Bliss is borrderline, but all of the other tracks are very very good, but if I waas to pick a lowpoint, it would be around tracks 3-5 i.e the singles. I prefer original, creative and meaningful songs as opposed to pop, which is why I think that the singles and track 8 are the worst, but all of the other tracks are SPECTACULAR - quite a contrast, actually.

The album sold quite poorly compared to her others in the UK. It only went Silver (Kylie's lowest certification) and its chart run in the UK was: 10-22-41-70; I think fans that liked the more pop Kylie weren't really 'ready' in a way for an album so different from all of her others, but with a successful tour to promote this album, Australia saw this album for what it is. It went Double Platinum and peaked at #4.

Note: There are many people comparing this album to Madonna's Ray Of Light - this album is far better. Compared to this it is bland.

Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

Definitely the best Kylie album.......2006-07-29

This was the first (and last, as of now) Kylie album, without any filler, where the best songs were NOT the singles, and where she actually experimented.

This is also one of the few Kylie albums where she didn't create an album for more commercial success ('Body Language', which was an obvious attempt to be successful in the US is a prime example), and thus took some time to experiment. She wrote all the songs, produced some, but every album after this, she only write a couple (i.e. 3-4) songs, and did not produces them, and did not have a lot of creative control at all. She should take some notes out of Dannii's book and at least write all of her music. After all, this is the 'fan-favourite' Kylie album, and, she obviously is a very good songwriter.

And now you have some background information, here is the review.

The album begins with the amazing "Too Far" it is a fantastic song that experiments with drum n bass and works fantastically. It combines so many types of genres, with themes such as sex and going 'too far' (if you know what I mean). The album goes down an accessible route with the next four songs, and "Cowboy Style" works well. As you may have guessed, the album feature some country influences and combines them with Kylie's famous dance/electronic pop. "Some Kind Of Bliss" is an experiment with indie and it works poorly. The song doesn't go anywhere, and it is too simple for its own good, and was the first Kylie single no to enter the UK top 20. "Did It Again" should have been the lead single instead of the last track. It peaked at #14 in the UK and despite being the most 'pop' sounding song on the album, I love it to bits and is just a great pop/dance song. "Breathe" follows and is an acceptable song, but is one the low points - it is kind of average (not that there is anything wrong with being average). It reminds me of a slower, less fun version of the previous track, and the reason I like the previous track so much is because of its energy, and fun-ness.

6 of the next 7 songs are the darkest songs Kylie has ever created (Confide In Me, Too Far and Loving Days can be in this list too), and are all fantastic.

"Say Hey" is an experiment with minimalism, and works excellently. It reminds me of a Bjork song - like a cross between something on her Vespertine album (the minimalism), Homogenic (hard beats and darkness) and Post (pop combined with alternate) - you will probably have to be familiar with Bjork to understand that, but I couldn't think of another way to describe the song. "Drunk" is another good song, that combines the energy of trance, the beats of techno, and some nice strings, and is another song that sounds Bjork influences. "I Don't Need Anyone" really affects the flow of this album. It is such a light, poppy and acoustic song, and tracks 6, 7, 9-12 area all quite the opposite. This is also my least favourite song from the album, and also one of my least favourite Kylie song.

Anyone that can appreciate something completely different and innovative should love "Jump" - one of my top-3 favourite Kylie songs ever, and THE BEST on this album. It is the darkest song Kylie has recorded, and I can just imagine Kylie performing this song with the Pagan Poetry dress (if you know what I mean, and sorry again for the Bjork comparisons - this album is obviously influences by her quite a bit). It is low tempo and very alternative and alienic. "Limbo" works well, and one of the few songs from this album that Kylie sometimes performed on her recent Showgirl tour. "Through The Years" is my equal-second-favourite song from this album, with tracks 1 and 12. Most Kylie fans don't seem to like this track at all, but I appreciate its darkness and originality. "Dreams" is the fan-favourite from this album, simply because there is something for everyone. It is catchy, as well as being dark, experimental and has some very distinctive Kylie lyrics.

(Like Kylie has implied in a way before, this is like a 'better' version of her previous self-titled album. If they were combined, the album would be just perfect, as there are so many great tracks on both, so I made my own tracklisting that flows very very well, combining them both: Too Far / Cowboy Style / Did It Again / Say Hey / Drunk / Jump / Falling / Limbo / Confide In Me / Through The Years / Dreams)

Therefore, an excellent experimental album with a great range of musical styles, just let down by a very small amount of below-par tracks.

The definitive Kylie album.......2006-01-24

Poor Kylie. This was meant as a more mature Kylie. Co-writing songs and taking a more indie approach to fit in with the times. That's not the Kylie we want say the public. We want fun loveable Kyles. We want the songs all light and fluffy. We want songs that remind us of time when we were little kids glued to our TV sets watching Neighbours to see her as Charlene. We don't want an album full of dark songs.......

Unfortunately, this has been cruelly overlooked and underrated by many critics. Some of her hardcore fans however have given this album a reappraisal and so it should be. It is a great cohesive album much more than the sum of a few songs thrown together to help out the singles. True it's easy to see why this album was a flop and how it lost Kylie a record contract for a few years.....but it was simply trying to fit in with the times and in some cases it was as inventive as anything could be within the pop format. But it didn't sell so it was back to drawing board and back to square one. The sort of stuff that made her in the first place - disposable disco music!

But that's Kylie, every once in a while she seems to get bored with producing the same thing over and over again and wants a change. There's nothing wrong with that. I think it's good that she at least has a go at trying to reinvent herself like Madonna. However there is the problem sometimes that not everyone wants to see that change and, as can happen, it can be seen as losing the plot. A shame because this album is much more than that.

Pop princess in power!.......2005-07-17

After signing with the Deconstruction label in 1994, Kylie Mingoue embarked on a creative venture for her second set. Recorded between 1995 and 1997, IMPOSSIBLE PRINCESS was her most experimental (if not, ambitious) album, to date! Just listen to the intensity within "Too Far" and "Limbo", the rock flair of "Some Kind of Bliss", and the 60's inspired "I Don't Need Anyone". IMPOSSIBLE PRINCESS is an eclectic piece of work. ONE of the Best albums to emerge within the past ten years!

Must-have - fan or not.......2005-05-20

Kylie was already big before releasing this album. She'd sold staggering record sales, made some excellent albums, but this one just proved to be one of her best, if not THE best. This album is dark, interesting, artistic, but still danceable. Despite how under-rated this album actually is, it is still a great album to have in your collection, weather you are a fan or not. The album includes the hits Some Kind Of Bliss, Did It Again and Breathe.

The album's opener, Too Far, takes no prisoners. This is a slab of claustrophobic beat poetry penned solely by Kylie and is set to a striking drum'n'bass arrangment of juddering strings and piano.

In the deceptively mellow Cowboy Style, there is a fusion mirrored in the electic instrumentation, dominated by fiddles and a barrage of polyrhythmic drums building to a soaring crescendo.

Some Kind Of Bliss was recorded in 1997 with The Manic Street Preachers and their long time producer, Dave Eringa. Unfortunately, the involvement of the Manics and the choice of lead single from this album, became the shadow from the true character of the album...

The perfect post modern pop single, Did It Again, my favourite Kylie single ever, sees a snarling Kylie shaking a self-deprecating finger at her own chameleonic style. The single featured an irresistable guitars and sitars and one of Kylie's most catchy hooks of her whole career.

Slowing the pace, Breathe is a seductive electronic groove, with a hypnotic subtlely and timelessness befitting the theme of inward contemplation and resolve. The song was written by Ingo Vauk and Dave Ball.

Brothers In Rhythm produced two of the album's key dance tracks: Say Hey and Drunk, two of the album's best. Say Hey is an intimate midnight soak in electronica, and is honestly the best song from the album along with Did It Again. Drunk is an exhilarating hymn to emotional involvement, set against casades of orchestral techno.

The album's most uplifting and straight-foward pop song comes in the form of I Don't Need Anyone, another song from the album which The Manic Street Preachers produced. This is the theme of emotional self-suffciency, while Jump is a beautiful downbeat collobration with Rob Dougan. The lyrics are set against 'big' beats and epic string arrangement.

Limbo is easily the third best song from the album. This is a tough fusion of rocky guitars and club beats supplied by Ingo Vauk and Dave Ball. It is a gripping narrative of frustration and powerlessness.

Through The Years is a gently smouldering torch-song tale of betrayal, punctuated with a tellingly explosive trumpet solo. The album closes with Dreams, an orcheastral paean to pushing the boundaries of exprience, which relates directly to the album's title.

Overall grade - 5/5

This album is easily, as said before, one of Kylie's best, if not THE best. You must also look out for other great Kylie albums and DVDs/VHS.

Kylie's Best.......2005-04-16

Let me start my saying that this is Kylie's best album to date.

I do not own her first four albums, although I can say that Kylie Minogue (1994), had some really good songs, but some were just boring and repedative
*this is when Impossible Princess is released* (1997)

The follow up is 2000's LIGHT YEARS which is poppy, and sold well, still the corny Kylie.

Fever was just straightforward pop, with some very catchy tunes

Body Language had some boring R n B, although tracks 7, 10-11 showed the RnB Impossible Princess

This album (Impossible Princess) showed the more mature, original and diverse Kylie. I am a huge fan of Bjork, and I like Kylie. Some are so unique, they could also suit Bjork singing them, instead of Kylie.

It begins with my favourite K.M song of all-time (which is the only song that Kyie has written all by herself) TOO FAR. It is myseterious and extremely original and weird. I epecially like when the thumping base line comes in at the beginning of the second verse -- you will defintaly find yourself tapping your foot to this one!!!

Next is the cool and again original Cowboy Style which was the fourth single - Australia only, and then the disaponting (and lowest charting Kylie song, even though it was the lead single), and then it is the upbeat DID IT AGAIN, and BREATHE (they both peaked at #14 UK, and were the 2nd and 3rd singles respectively)

SAY HEY and DRUNK are dark and mysterious.
I DON'T NEED ANYONE could fit in well with the Light Years album, it more upbeat and Did it Again-ish.
JUMP and LIMBO are some of the two standouts on this album.
Through The Years is okay, and the album ends with the fantastic Breathe.

Therefore, I strongly recommend this album in anyone's collection.

My Favourite Album Of All Time .......2004-09-19

Wow. I really don't know where to begin with this one! I really love this album, and it is such a departure for Kylie. Her pre-"IP" and post-"IP" work is okay, but I will always believe that this album is her best.

It begins with the haunting "Too Far," with lyrics like "Caught up in this house / Trapped my very own self in the snare of my mind / No more space than a slither / What I'd give for a deep breath inside." This is a very disturbing song, but it works.
I would have to say that it is my favourite song on the whole album.

"Cowboy Style" sounds like a mix between country music and Celtic music - very odd, but fun to dance to. It combines my two favourite styles of music, so that is a plus!

"Some Kind Of Bliss" and "Did It Again" are the more rock/pop tracks on the album. I think that they are the least creative but the most radio-friendly. Good songs in general, though, and they make the album more complete.

"Breathe" - a great song, but it is pretty slow for me. I like the sped-up radio version of this song that can be found on her "Hits+" album.

"Say Hey," "Drunk," and "Limbo" are very techno-dance infused songs. I enjoy these a lot, and I think they each are very unique.

"I Don't Need Anyone" - quite possibly a close second for my favourite. It sounds like a 70's song with the flutes and such, but it is a rock/pop track.

"Jump" is my least favourite song, but I'm not sure why. The lyrics are very good, but I don't really care for the melody.

"Through The Years" is a jazzy, sultry song that I love! It has a very sexy tone to it, but the lyrics make it more of a "done me wrong" song, if you know what I mean.

"Dreams" - what a brilliant way to end the album. A sweeping ballad about wanting everything and being an impossible princess because of it.

The album I purchased was the box set, which includes a second CD of remixes and bonus tracks. I recommend that everyone get this set, because the bonuses are wonderful. "Love Takes Over Me," "Too Far (Inner Door Mix)" and "Breathe (Tee's Glimmmer Mix)" are my faves.

Buy this album! You won't regret it!

Full of Kylie.......2004-02-01

If your going to pick up Kylie's "Impossible Princess" album, make sure to pick up the remastered box set. Here you get extra songs, in addition to remixed versions of the origional one's. Sound quality is excellent. A special bonus is "this Girl" on the second cd, which you won't find on any other album. It's a beautiful song. Great cd, so pick it up!

Bad Kylie, Excellent Princess.......2005-11-04

I bought this "Kylie Minogue/Impossible Princess" boxset last month and I got disappointed because the "Kylie Minogue" booklet print is really awful, also the CD print is in bad quality. The case was broken from the outside and it's a shame because this is an excellent record. "Impossible Princess" is the only one from all these boxset series that is in good conditions. If you are a collectionist then don't buy this boxset because it's really bad. I recommend you to buy them by separate.
