There's more to early 20th Century Finnish symphonic music than Sibelius.......2005-11-22
Read the previous reviews to get a feel for what this is, and what this is not. I don't plan to reiterate what has been so competently stated by my predecessors. From a nationalistic point of view, these symphonies do represent an original voice, however derivative it may sound to ears that are "wise after the fact." Erkki Melartin seems to be looking for his voice in the first symphony, which tends to meander (despite lofty contrapuntal intentions and the controlling principle of brevity). Things tighten up and come into focus in the next 4 works, and symphonies 3 and 4 are nothing short of masterful. Economy of thematic means is matched with a creatively-employed color pallette with cleanness of line heightening the drama. The counterpoint is complex, but never sounds like it -- it comes across as effortless (despite the fact that one is often listening to complex overlays of the cantus firmus in augmentation, retrograde, inversion, etc., all at once). Thematic unity is also emphasized: motifs in a given symphony's first movement tend to pepper subsequent movements (or, perhaps just as accurately, subsequent themes owe their heritage to previous material, but sometimes inverted, etc.). The 5th symphony is also mature and satisfying, but Melartin dabbles in darker, more dissonant waters in the 6th, which is, to me, the least successful of the set (primarily because of its first movement, although subsequent movements attempt to redeem the picture). All in all, worthy of one's patronage. The Tampere Orchestra plays flawlessly and with conviction under Leonid Grin. If you were to get one set of 20th century symphonies this year, this one should vie with British composer Edward Rubbra's set for your consideration (also available on Amazon) -- you can't go wrong with either set, and the compositional craftsmanship in both cases is exemplary.
Don't be misled by comparisons to Mahler.......2004-12-08
Melartin's symphonies are often compared to Mahler's by critics simply because he introduced Mahler to the Nordic audience. But they are hardly Mahlerian at half of the length. In fact, they are typical miniaturist's symphonies, which vaguely reminded me of Sinding. Powerful and ambitious openings are drowned out by overflowing lyricism in the middle movements, which, despite their colorfulness, are sterile of ideas. No doubt there are many good tunes in the symphonies, but they are nondescript, easily fade from memory and soon become tiresome. Grieg, though his only symphony is often dismissed as derivative, seems the only miniaturist capable of large scale works.
fine performances of wonderful but virtually unknown music.......2000-03-25
I agree completely with the other review posted here. I even came by these recordings the same way he did; I read the glowing comments on one of the single issues and decided to investigate the whole set. This is wonderful music--beautfiully crafted, sometimes lyrical, sometimes powerful, but always colorful and interesting. As a conductor Melartin brought Mahler to the Scandanavian countires, just as Wilhelm Stenhammar-- his exact comtemporary--introduced Bruckner to the north; and one can hear the Mahler influence in Melartin's dazzling orchestration. Melartin gets a very brief paragraph in Groves; and, as nearly as I can determine, these are the only recordings of the symphonies available--perhaps, ever available. I'm not going to play "is-it-as-good-as" games. The quality of this music, however, raises real questions about the standard orchestral canon--what's in and what's out. There is a great deal of music routinely heard in the world's concert halls which is not the equal of these enjoyable symphonies. I don't know much about Leonid Grin, and it's always difficult to judge performances of marginalized repertoire when you've never heard it before. I remember Bernstein took an interest in his talents some years ago, and I think he now holds a post somewhere in the US south-west. All I can say is the music is compelling and he gets top notch results from a little known orchestra. Great sound and a good price! (Check out Melartin's violin concerto with Segerstam on the same label!)

This is great!.......2000-02-20
What we have here is another example of a lost or forgotten composer. Melartin, a Finnish composer who lived from 1875-1937 has in essence become completely eclipsed by his contemporary, Jean Sibelius. While I'm not saying that Melartin's symphonies are better than those masterpeices of Sibelius, I am going to say that these deserve better attention and circulation than they have been given. These are wonderful, tuneful works, full of brilliant orchestration! The composer that seems to come to mind for me is Bruckner, only these are more brilliant orchestrally. I decided to purchase the complete set after reading the recommendations for Symphony #4, and haven't regretted it for a minute! Everyone of these symphonies will bring much pleasure to the listener. Please buy this set!

Excellent - Both Technically and Emotionally.......2006-02-08
I am new to the masterpieces of woodwind composition, and this is my first purchase of strictly woodwind works. Based on this CD,the New York Woodwind Quintet is the psychic classical music equivalent of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ). Each note is given the care it deserves, from the first track to the last, just as the MJQ did on most of their recordings. The fact that Elliot Carter's work is represented on this recording perhaps gives the entire album a vanguard feel - even pastoral themes communicated with a gentle horn effect seem new and edgy.
It should also be said that the precision given to the recording is only surpassed by the attention given to emotional effect. The careful listener will be rewarded with a range of feelings and moods. This is a top notch CD.
Great Artists brisk through a difficult repertoire.......2001-09-27
These are superb artists playing on fine instruments and achieving fine balance and blend; and the sound is too good to be true. Some of these recordings come from the early 1960s but Boston Skyline have brought out the very best and it would be difficult to fault them even today.
The disc contains a variety of music ranging from the 17th Century to the present day, the latter represented above all by two eminent American composers, namely Samuel Barber and Elliot Carter. I'm afraid I've always held Elliot Carter in deep suspicion, purely a personal view since Carter, like so many of the avant garde, does not construct the musical linguistics as he goes along; thus the listener has no common musical linguistic base on which to comprehend the music inwardly. At best, to me, the music comes over as 'interesting'. In this work, at least he shows he can write something of a fugue in the fantasia. However, he commands a following and I'm bound to agree that the New York Woodwind Quintet make his music listenable.
Barber's Summer Music is a different matter entirely. The work is as approachable as any Barber and is pure summer. It begins with a lazy, laid-back (and horribly difficult intro for the bassoon which is exposed in the most upper reaches of its register); soon to dissolve into dance-like themes in rapid staccato, so light and airy they could be nothing other than summer. Then more drifting under rolling clouds set in a perfect blue sky. A beautiful work in which Barber shows he is as much at ease composing for a woodwind quintet as any other medium.
I was snared by the sensitivity of these artists, more so because their expressiveness comes across in these historic recordings without being forced. I've heard other, mechanically accurate recordings of the Neilsen and Barber but nothing that approaches the expressive qualities of this ensemble. They deserve never to be forgotten.

Customer Reviews:
Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20
This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.
Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15
This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!
Joni James at Abbey Road!.......2002-07-23
Miss Joni James swept away on a veritable ocean of violins!
This classic LP remastered in pristine sound with tender torch tunes rendered "close to the microphone" by one of the 1950s most popular singing icons. Recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road studios with those lush, sweeping Acquaviva arrangements. Joni's most divine moment! (Tacked on to the original album are 6 tracks, also with the 100 Strings orchestra, of songs from her Jimmy McHugh tribute LP.)

Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction to both the life and the work.......2001-08-10
Not having known very much at all about Chopin, I cannot vouch for the accuracy in the Naxos entry in their CD and cassette Biography series; but I can vouch for the enjoyment
(NA 421912) afforded me.
Written and produced by Jeremy Siepmann, this audio-bio not only tells the strange story of Chopin's life but also includes generous examples of his music, drawn from the bottomless pit of Naxos musical CDs. An excellent idea was to use actors for the voices of Chopin (Anton Lesser), George Sand and other females in his life (Elaine Claxton and Karen Archer), and other male acquaintances (Neville Jason). It is the kind of reading that would fascinate even if the work were fictional.
His letters are particularly fascinating, especially as they are read dramatically by the small cast; and one would rather hear about all his faults--physical and psychological--from people who knew him well. Perhaps his strange epistolary relationship with his Titus is dwelt upon a bit too much, but such are the times (then and now).
My only criticism in a negative direction is the length of the musical examples. I do not really think the entire "Revolutionary Etude" had to be played or the entire "Funeral March"; a minute or two with a fadeout would have been fine, especially on repeated hearings where one wants the facts. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Compilation.......2005-03-05
We were looking for a good source to introduce our children (4 and 6) to various classical composers and melodies. We had tried one of the Baby Einstein tapes, but all the music was done on synthesizers. This compilation is done with real orchestras.
It has been a great tool in getting the kids familiar with all different types of composers - from Baroque and Classical, to Romantics and someone modern composers.
