Customer Reviews:
One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

Before Sun Ra careened into the jazz avant-garde with his banks of electrickeyboards and highwire group improvisations, he made recordings like *Fatein a Pleasant Mood.* Rich with Ra's persistent astro-mythology, *Fate* is equally rich with an immersion in the history of big band music. The charts played on Fate are as orchestrally complex as anything Duke Ellington wrote, yet they still maintain a clear position on the cusp of the avant-garde. More than anything, changes are the order on Fate, fast runs across difficult melody statements, on-the-fly changes in harmonic aims and rhythmic jumps that illuminate just how completely Sun Ra understood the overlap of jazz traditions as the 1960s approached. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Start with this one........2006-08-06
If you only buy one Sun Ra CD, in my opinion this should be the one. You get a good mix of the different things he was in to.
Beautiful, Sometimes Chaotic.......2000-10-23
"Fate" is a wonderful little record. It consists of tracks recorded at various sessions or rehearsals arranged into a record - because of the quality of the tracks, it demands to be heard. "Space Mates" is a beautiful other-wordly journey complete with dramatic piano solo. "Kingdom of Thunder" is a brilliantly rhythmic piece.
"When Sun Comes Out" finds Ra working with a wilder band, one that played something akin to 1960's "free jazz", which typically became squawking exercises in audience disenfranchisement intended to reflect or augment the African-American experience. Here, the sound is given a more cosmological context and cut with an exotic ambience. Although I am not that keen on the sound the band lays down here, I like the format they've fit it into and like some of the tracks. Pat Patrick among other players goes really wild on here (Pat played baritone sax). This serves as a good entry point into ra's mid-to-late 60's direction.
A lot of music here- experimental, but accessible.......2000-08-29
So many songs for the money. These songs are all quite unique. There is a beautiful subtlety to it. It is not overpowering, but cautious and gentle...so sophisticated. With nearly 30 Sun Ra records, I can highly recommend this one.

Best of Shearing AND Kings Singers.......2002-05-26
This is a fantastic recording. There are interesting arrangements from some of the best popular music arrangers, including Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Hart and Daryl Runswick, not to mention Shearing's great new 5/4 version of his best-loved song Lullaby of Birdland, which begins with a jazz version of Brahms' Lullaby.
The Kings Singers are in fine form, with their flawless intonation and meticulous attention to creating a great sound.
Each track features just the sextet, Shearing and a double bass (played by Neil Swainson), except for One For My Baby, which adds John Harle on saxophone. That track is one of the three terrific Daryl Runswick arrangements included on the album.
Other stand-outs are:
The-Half-of-It-Dearie Blues, which sounds very similar to their much earlier version of it, i.e. sensitive and sensuous.
Gershwin's The Real American Folk Song (is a rag)
Daryl Runswick's interpretations of I Got Rhythm and Anyplace I Hang My Hat
Over the Rainbow
It is worth getting Amazon to hunt for this album for you: it is one of the very best of many fine albums the performers have made. Getting them together for this disc was a first-class idea.

BEATLES GO BAROQUE.......2001-06-01
ME GUSTAN LOS BEATLES Y ESTE C.D. ES DE COLECCION, LO QUIERO TENER.
Great treatment of Beatles songs.......1999-12-19
Presenting Beatles tunes in a Baroque treatment is not new (Back in 1965, Joshua Rifkin released an album tailored this way). The album presents the songs gathered on a concerto grosso form in a particular composer style (Haendel, Vivaldi, Bach). The main problem however is that being such so well known tunes, the tendence is to think them as separate pieces instead of being part of a whole. This does not prevent the effect to be great. The selection of the songs is good. In some cases the theme is merely a quotation to start a variation in the best baroque tradition, not only related to the melody line but to the harmonic structure. Some themes due to their rich chord progresion work better under a baroque treatment. Curiosly those on a minor key such as "Girl" and "Michelle", the latter adopting a fugue structure. Echoes of the composers can be heard on a few themes. "Lady Madonna" resembles the first bars of Haendel's "Hallelujah Chorus" and Vivaldi's "The Spring" can be heard on "Paperback writer"

Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09
The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.

Best Cabaret.......2005-09-21
I have seen Karen and have all of her cds. She truly is a talent. I can't think of anyone who can sell a song like her. This is, by far, her best work. If you like cabaret songs and vocalists this is the place to start and the cd to purchase. Karen has a power and emotion that you will not find from other performers. Highly recommended cd.
UNBELIEVABLE VOICE, A GODDESS OF SONG.......2002-03-25
When The Sun Comes Out
My birthday was ...[a few days ago] and I received this
CD as a present. I set it aside as I never heard of Karen
Mason. A few days later, I slipped it into my CD player
and I am wondering where did this singer come from?
I was elated. I am older and retired and many of these
songs are from the past but Karen Mason has somehow
made them into contemporary songs.
Her voice is absolutely unbelievable. The last true singer
that I can compare her to is Judy Garland. Karen Mason
has such great diction to her voice that you hear every
sound which is incredibly accurate and clear.
All the songs are performed extremely well but I do have
a favorite and that is, Maybe This Time, but I have to agree
that the commercial hit would be Shoot For The Moon.
This is definitely one of the best CD's that I have ever
owned.... I have never heard
a singer like this in a long time! I feel blessed to have the
privilege to hear her sing. A Goddess Of Song.
5 stars (and that is not enough)----- Stars are not a bad place
you will find. They may not get around much. But they sure
know how to Shine ------
<== from Shoot For The Moon
Karen Mason is definitely a Star!
KAREN MASON HITS THE HEIGHTS WITH A VENGEANCE!.......2002-03-18
*** When The Sun Comes Out ***
I was feeling a bit guilty about leaving a negative review for her CD ** Better Days ** being staged and mechanical. After all, I was an Orphanite for many years and knew her well. That was not Karen. Now I feel vindicated. This is the Karen Mason that I knew. Maybe the review kicked her into gear.
Every Song Is ***S P E C T A C U L A R*** And a great selection too. Move over Streisand. Celine give her some sky. The torch has been passed to Karen! She created a **Masterpiece** with this new CD which will send your emotions running up and down with her strong, clear, crisp, unmistakable vocals where every word is distinct and delivered thoughtfully into making each and every song
her own. These are Karen's songs. Karen's to sing. Karen's to breathe. Karen's to deliver a punch to knock you over or to make you cry. In particular, "Shoot For The Moon" can easily hit the top of the charts with some promotion behind it. This is a platinum CD with a little help from promoters and disc jockies. There is an audience for this CD! Inspirational as "Shoot For The Moon" is, I liken it to the possible success of "You Light Up My Life" by Debbie Boone and "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler - "Sleeper Hits" That Went To The Top!
As a lyricist, I find it ironic that the song with the "MOON" is the best in a CD that has "SUN" in the title but then again, Karen Mason can sing the phone book and make it sound good!
You can buy this CD without worry or regrets as you listen to songs that will make you feel like you are receiving a personal performance because *** When The Sun Comes Out *** - Karen Mason Shines!
Fives Stars - Ten Stars If You See Her Perform Live!
...
Life is a Cabaret.......2002-01-30
Karen Mason has recorded When The Sun Comes Out, a collection of Broadway signatures and pop standards. What impressed me the most about her CD was the cleanness of her voice, and the simple, effective orchestration. Every song came across naturally, and with eyes closed, could have been believable as a live, intimate performance. At times playful, once in a while humorous, the entire CD was pleasant to listen to. At last, I have a heard a cover of "Up On The Roof" that I actually liked. "I Promise You A Happy Ending" was my favorite piece, probably because it sounded like Karen really enjoyed singing it.
Doesn't get much better than Karen Mason.......2002-01-15
If you're not familiar with Karen Mason, now is the time. Her incredible voice, warmth and humor have made her one of the best known and loved cabaret artists. The CD is classy and powerful. Get it, then turn your friends onto Karen!
