5 out of 5 stars Excellent-10 Stars for "A Song For Europe.......2007-02-28

Roxy Music is one of the most underappreciated groups in history. Most of their albums are superb, and their first four are among the greatest albums in rock. While not quite as raw as the first album, or as deliciously odd and sexy as For Your Pleasure, Stranded is still quite experimental is still Roxy reaching into new territories and improving those already explored. Their best album is, in my opinion, Country Life, which distills all of the great elements of their previous work into a potent brew, but there is also something exhiliriating about the artistic growth on Stranded. Several reviewers have gone in depth on individual songs, and each one is special and well-worth a listen, but one song on this album truly stands out (which is hard to do on such an excellent work)as (in my opinion) Roxy's greatest track and one of the truly monumental tracks ever recorded... drum roll ... please: "Song For Europe" is the song to which I refer, it defies words. Few songs have ever impacted me as it has, nor have received such heavy play over a long span of time. I have thousands of cds, thus hundreds of thousands of songs, it means something when a song is among my 10 favorites and "Song For Europe" is among them. It's the crowning masterpiece of a brilliant band, much as "Shine A Light" (for me) is for the Stones. Every track is worth the price of the album, but "A Song For Europe" is worth it and then some.

5 out of 5 stars Higher Than The Milky Way.......2006-08-25

From the opening dissonant synthesizer riff, Phil Manzanera's alternately 'walking' and shrieking guitar lines slithering through it and Bryan Ferry's excited crooning in "Street Life" to the gorgeous poetry and subtle piano/violin interplay at the end of "Sunset", this is my favorite Roxy Music album. The wild "Street Life" is followed by "Just Like You", a luscious ballad with astoundingly dreamy/surrealistic lyrics Ferry mostly sings in a sweet falsetto. Then out of left field (way, way out!) comes the Ferry/Manzanera-composed "Amazona"- partly funky, partly spacey, totally unique. I love Phil's treated guitar solo on this one. The marching rhythm of "Psalm" features a strange lyrical analogy of trying on different clothes with seeking religious faith. "Serenade" features some wonderful oboe and sax work by Andy Mackay. Next is the towering "A Song For Europe", an ode to the Olde Country that veers from the majestic to the subtle and back again. The astonishingly original "Mother of Pearl" starts off like a schizophrenic rocker ("Have you a future? Yes,yes, yes, nooo!"), transforms into a semi-ballad after a little over a minute and slowly starts rocking again after a bit. "Mother" segues right into the final track, "Sunset", a song so beautiful, so melancholy yet serene that I cried the first few times I listened to it. Again, here Bryan's lyrics are unparalleled in their subtlety and wit. ("Sunburst fingers you raise, one last sigh of farewell".) Glorious!

Before continuing, I have to tell you that I worship at the alter of Brian Eno. He's probably the biggest influence on my own songwriting. But is he missed on "Stranded"? My answer is a resounding 'no'. The replacement of Brian with Eddie Jobson was a good move. I think the band sounds more cohesive on "Stranded" than their first two albums with Eno. However, I want to clarify that I do love those first two albums as well. In a band that includes such an unusual instrument (in rock music anyway) as the oboe, the electric violin was a brilliant addition to their sound. Eddie's synth playing is very nice, adding just the right touches without being quite as in-your-face as Eno's sometimes was. As a matter of fact, I've read that this is actually Eno's favorite Roxy Music album so there you have it. Pick up this art rock stunner immediately!

5 out of 5 stars Ahhh, the girl with blue hair !!.......2006-08-13

This is simply the best Roxy album ever. I went to see them live in 1973 (?) in Coventry, and was stunned. All of us were huge Roxy fans at the time, and i still consider most of it to have been the best time of my life. all the albums were incredibly innovative, and got everyone away from mainstream rock'n'roll.
Just what we needed. And the girl with the blue hair? No idea who she was. She was, I assume, a "camp follower" of the band, but as I was 19 and very easily impressed, (and under the influence, so to speak) she turned my head, and I've never forgotten her.

4 out of 5 stars VENUS on the HALF SHELL is an AMAZON .......2006-06-23

The first song "Street Life" the stunning personal rocker, redefines the new ROXY MUSIC as a great ensemble. The second is the perfect and brilliant singer/songwriter "Just Like You" which redefines the director of ROXY MUSIC as Bryan Ferry. The third track "Amazona" is what should be this throw away little ditty that I have the most to write about (he he he) "...in Amazona everything is nice...little one, come take my hand, I'll try to take you there..." which gets weird like a horrible cloud of gnats that you can't escape and can't help but get under your skin and Phil Manzanera does, but distortion is not song content and here might ENO contribute. It is probably my favorite track, and annoying, but also probably the weakest one on the album (he he he). "Psalm" is warranted and shocking in its day, but not one I rarely skip. "Serenade" however is another one of those tuneful ROXY marvels I write about, surprising and insightful. "A Song for Europe" is another long theatre piece, Byronesque, as in Lord Byron. Some love it, some don't. "Mother Of Pearl," like the Venus-on-the-Half-Shell record album cover, is protracted. But, it has such an electrifying opener, poignant lyric, and lush tune, that I can't fault it. The album closes with the gorgeous "Sunset" which is one of those perfectly set ROXY MUSIC songs that, when you sleep, haunt your dreams...

C'mon now guys, give me a break. I LOVE ROXY MUSIC, so I judge based upon my love of all the music. ROXY MUSIC is better than a lot of their contemporaries. But I judge not just against their contemporaries, but each ROXY entry against the oeuvre, and those few albums I award FIVE STARS to are those I feel no collection of 20th century Rock should be without. This album may contain some of ROXY MUSIC'S finest recordings, and certainly a few favorites of mine, but overall there are more important and consistent records by this greatest of 1970s Rock and Roll bands. I think at this point ROXY MUSIC was just getting to their highest points, such as the next two albums.

5 out of 5 stars extremely good album.......2005-09-25

This is one of the best punk albums. It is a lot like the dead boys, but actually slightly better, higher quality songs. And even more energy. If you like dead boys, you'll definetly like this. messin' with the kid is a great bob dylan-esque song. But the rest are just great intense rocknroll. Definetly buy this if you like stooges and early punk. seriously. its so good. It's way better than the clash, pistols, maybe dead boys, as good as the damned's debut. Its so good.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch, brutal Aussie rock'n'roll!.......2004-08-04

This is the kind of album by the kind of band that blows stupid labels like "punk" or "pre-punk" outta the water. The Saints pretty much follow in the footsteps of all the great rock'n'roll bands who had the guts to play music with soul and play it loud. F.M. radio would be so much better today if the network dweebs who claimed to love rock'n'roll had played this type of stuff instead of inventing the lame a#%s "classic rock " genre which pretty much sentenced music fans to 25 years of Zep and Framton! In the late 1970's "I'm Stranded " set a new high water mark for red-blooded rock'n'roll. Go buy it....NOW!

5 out of 5 stars One of the original punk rock artifacts.......2003-03-30

Sure, it sounds like it was recorded on a RadioShack C-120 cassette in an aluminum shack during a hailstorm with the treble turned up to ten, but what a buzz this album still delivers! The cranked momentum of the manic title song amazingly leads into more dementia, stopping for a breather only during the six-minute stomp of "Messin' With the Kid" and the (comparatively) Dylanesque "Story of Love", and then racing to the finish line with the mind-melting Stooges-style riff-insanity of "Nights in Venice". Ed Keupper's lead guitar is all fuzz and treble throughout, spinning flashy solos where punks weren't supposed to do such things, and Chris Bailey's gruff howl attains a tuneful charisma seemingly through the force of will. It was a pleasant surprise in '77; it sounds even more surprising now.

5 out of 5 stars Actually, it came out in 1976... think about THAT........2003-03-10

Apparently the Saints were one of those weird quirks of spontaneous invention -- like where the wheel or the hot-air popcorn popper are invented on separate continents at the same time -- in 1976, Australia's greatest punk band, the Saints, came out with a blistering salvo of snotty, kickass guitar rock that was as notable or as gnarly as anything Joey Ramone or Steve Cook were thinking up that year. They also conjured up a major-label record deal, which helped get their foot in the door pretty early in the annals of punk history. This whole album doesn't floor me, but the single - "I'm Stranded" is an unconquerable blast of edgy, snarly pure punk heaven. Also check out their second album, "Eternally Yours," which is about eight times as amazing. Both albums are highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Good Times, Good Music, Must Buy.......2002-03-22

Theres not a lot to say about this album. It just so dang good! This is a must buy for any fan of Punk Rock. This is the Saints best album by far...

Product Description

Beautiful, guitar-driven ambience from the deep American South: Hammock’s music, like the South itself, is desolate but hopeful, dramatic but sparse, and always overflowing with stories. Cut from the same cloth as the duo’s acclaimed debut Kenotic, Stranded Under Endless Sky offers four new songs ranging from whisper-soft minimalism to moments of slow-burn intensity.

5 out of 5 stars Hammock, Stranded Under Endless Sky..........2007-05-09

The music of Hammock is really unlike anything I've ever heard... Their music is so beautiful, that I can't wait for their next album...

5 out of 5 stars Music that melts in your mouth..........2005-11-07

I first heard Hammock as they put out their "Kenotic" album. I was hypnotized from the first note. "Stranded Under Endless Sky" is no different, except in one respect: it's even better. Without any lyrics, this time around, the bulk of the album is centered around the atmospheres the instruments create, transporting you if you accidentally close your eyes and forget you are listening to music.

It is hard to balance so well so much power in a guitar with such subtle soundscapes. The four tracks in Hammock's "Stranded Under Endless Sky", with their blend of ambient and shoegazing, make you let go and leave you wanting more. Like an exquisite musical chocolate, their music almost melts in your mouth. I find myself with either their "Kenotic" album or this EP by my bedside, as I start to get in the mood to drift into sleep. You probably should too...

5 out of 5 stars Hammock have done it again!!!.......2005-11-01

Well what do ya know. Hammock is back with another great release. Hammock are a band who completely surround the listener with sound.I could only imagine how large they would sound in concert. There is a nice uncomplicated feel to their music. Even though it's quite complex. A lot of bands could really benefit from learning that trick from these guys. The listening of their music is an experience that is truly one that you will never regret. The guitar lines and effects are there as usual. But somehow they managed to top theirlast release Kenotic. Which was something I didn't think was possible.

The disc starts off with the title track. A nice subtle drone and distortion linger throughout. The music just floats around your headputting you in a trance like state. The relaxing ambience only getsbetter with each track. This album maybe a little slower then the last one. But none the more effective. "Birds Flying In Sequence" starts out
with a nice tribal feel. Once the guitar and bass take control. The song then begins to take on true form. I can only imagine how these guys feel when they listen to their finished project. They must be so proud.

The natural beauty of their releases is something every person should experience. Undeniably there's power in the voice and atmosphere of their music. Hammock are the musical equivalent of the most relaxing body massage. This release deserves so much attention. I hope after reading this a few of you will feel obligated to purchase this masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars another great release from Hammock.......2005-10-27

On Stranded Under Endless Sky, Monarch plays the most soothing, heartbreaking music. The CD features 4 tracks of ambient guitar work, minimal percussion, found noises, and strings, but as always with Hammock that mere descrption falls short. The Ep begins with the title track, a lethargic study in lingering guitar melodies that are wrapped in a dreamy haze. After meandering about, the song lingers in a moment of echoing delay and swirling atmospherics. The second track is a the graceful "Birds Flying in Sequence". The song is a pastoral song, with a simple, repetitive, but highly hypnotic melodu playing over soft drones and muted percussion. The song builds beautifully, before erupting into an expansive melody without losing the introspective mood. "Always Wishing You Were Somewhere Else" is as wistful as the title suggests, with a dark undertone of drones and ambience supporting a singular guitar line that bends throughout its melody. As the song progresses it portrays with clarity the longing and regret expressed in the song's title. Finally, the ever-so-quiet "An Empty Field" rounds out the Ep...this song slowly and queitly builds with its distant guitar lines that are variously effected. Part way through the over 9 minute song (and not one second of it is unengaging), the melody changes, and the song incorporates a gorgeous cello part that likewise soothes and inspires.

I remember first hearing Hammock's music in the dark coldness of late December last year. As the seasons change now in my part of the world, with the chil lreturning in the wind and the leaves falling to the ground, I can't think of a better EP to be the soundtrack of autumn. Or, for that matter, any season in which one wants to connect with the organic and eternal. A beautiful EP that deserves to be listened to by many many people. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful Music.......2005-10-24

I have been an avid fan of Marc Byrd since I first heard his debut disc with Common Children back in college. While several people just tossed it aside as another post-grunge CD, I could hear something in the music that set it apart from the rest of the group. After a follow-up CD that was phenomenal and a short hiatus, the band reconvened to release the stunning, "In Between Time". This CD is the beginning of a transition that has become fully realized with his new band, Hammock.

Hammock introduced themselves with "Kenotic" and it was an instant hit amongst the shoegaze/post-rock scene. Shortly after this release, Marc and Andrew set up shop to lay down the four tracks that comprise the, "Stranded Under Endless Sky" EP. I can honestly say that these 4 songs are the strongest material to date from the band. I find myself listening to this release much more than the Kenotic release. The arrangements are beautiful and are much more peaceful than the debut full-length. We also are graced with more cello from the ever-talented Matt Slocum. As the seasons begin to change and the air becomes crisper and cooler, you can bet that this EP will be in heavy rotation as the seasons begin to change for us.

I have had the pleasure of working with the guys on this release and was able to offer a vinyl version of the record in a limited pressing.

It irks me to no end when a classic recording that clearly has sales potential is out of print. If the people who own the rights don't keep the item in circulation, how can they blame anyone for pirating it? This recording, as well as, the Chet Baker Quintet recordings on 'Prestige' and the classic João Gilberto recordings ought to be available. There are many others that fit into this category, but those are some that come immediately to mind.

3 out of 5 stars Filling the Eno void.......2003-06-03

Indeed, Roxy Music was stranded when Brian Eno left in 1973. They had also done the 'Strand' for the last time. When I listen to 'Stranded', I keep wishing that the tracks had either more electronics or more funk. This album shows Bryan Ferry's efforts to utilize synthesizers as a gimmick (thanks to Eddie Jobson's bland contributions) I find, rather than as a fundamental musical layer as in 1972's inovative 'Virginia Plain.' This is perhaps a result of the album's rushed release (RM's second 1973 record) but also of the sonic void created by Eno's departure. As a result, I don't find this album as successful as 'For Your Pleasure' or 1974's 'Country Life.' 'Song for Europe' was better realized as 'Bitter Sweet' and 'Street Life Life' as 'All I Want is You' on 'Country Life.' 'Mother of Pearl' has inspired music but is flawed by lyrics that betray Roxy Music's usual high standards of irony and innuendo:

'Oh mother of pearl lustrous lady of a sacred world... Oh mother of pearl submarine lover in a shrinking world...Oh mother of pearl so so semi-precious in your detached world...Oh mother of pearl I wouldn't change you for the whole world.'

I'll let you figure that one out.

'Sunset' stands out for its serenity - Bryan Ferry's vocals are melting and the piano work is beautiful. It stands as one of Bryan Ferry's most successful ballads.

Incidentally, the B-side of 'Street Life'- 'Hula Kula' - (not included here) is one of Roxy Music's most light-hearted forays into, no less, a Hawaiian instrumental complete with ukelele. It is that kind of fun and experimentalism that 'Stranded' is missing. Ironically, Bryan Ferry's almost contemporary solo album 'These Foolish Things' is brimming with wit and vitality.

Overall, I think this record serves primarily as the transitory step to the thrilling 'Coutry Life' album and the last scattered ashes of Roxy Music's first brilliant phase with Brian Eno.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated masterpiece.......1999-04-14

Though it is not as strong as SIREN and COUNTRY LIFE, STRANDED works because it is one of the most elegant Roxy albums. There's some strangeness in "Street Life" and "Amazona", as well as the beginning to "Mother of Pearl," but for the most part the album is calmer than early Roxy albums. For that reason, it must have shocked and upset those fans who jumped on board when Eno was in the band, but it doesn't mean it is inferior. Rather, STRANDED's beauty is magnificent. "Psalm" has an uplifting aura to it, spirituality without the dogma. "Song For Europe" has a great middle section, when the violins come crashing in for a near-lead, and the aforemnetioned tracks are all stunning. The others are pretty good too. Get COUNTRY for the rock, SIREN for the funk, and this one for beauty.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant, But Inconsistent.......1999-02-06

It's hard to put an accurate star rating on Stranded. The highlights easily rank 5 stars, but there are a couple weak tracks ("Just Like You" & most of "Amazona," although it has a blazing Manzanera guitar solo).

By this point, the hard-rocking numbers were no longer served up as straight-ahead stompers such as "Virginia Plain" or "Editions Of You." Everything on Stranded had odd, edgy elements that assured poor sales in the U.S. Hard to describe musically, but tremendously original creative songs & execution. About half the songs seem to start one place, go someplace completely different along the way, & either reach startling levels of intensity ("Psalm") or come back to where they started ("Amazona" careens out of control, then abruptly returns}. You've never heard anything like it, and you never will. That alone probably makes it essential, along with the devastatingly simple and beautiful coda, "Sunset."

5 out of 5 stars Classic Roxy album.......1998-08-21

This is probably the flip side to SIREN--the most underrated Roxy Music album of the first incarnation of the band. The production by Chris Thomas is stellar and the songwriting superb. While a little monochromatic in the overall "sound", this album would pave the way for the superior COUNTRY LIFE.

The lyrics see Ferry's themes emerge mature for the first time. While the earlier album was recorded by a group playing at being a rock band, this is an album by the rock band itself. Serious themes(religion, love, the crush of civilization)would reappear in various forms on later albums until the band broke up for the first time in 1976.

Some of the songs require repeated listenings to fully appreciate their depth, but are well worth the effort. While the casual fan won't appreciate this album perhaps as much as the hardcore Roxy fan, after giving popping the cover and allowing it to breathe, they'll find like fine wine, STRANDED gets better with every listening.

3 out of 5 stars Like most RM albums, a couple fantastic songs, and dogs.......1998-07-26

I guess Roxy Music is like Notre Dame: you either love them or hate 'em. Im one of the few in the middle. This album has three utterly fantastic, grammy-eligible songs: "Street Life", "Psalm" (if you don't feel like going to church after this, you never will), and "Mother of Pearl" (perhaps RM's best song ever). the rest of the album is the usual meandering claptrap.

    5 out of 5 stars DYNAMIC DUO.......2001-08-21

Tucker and Thomas came out with Stranded, the sound of the old school blues. These two have the strong voice of the duo Sam & Dave. Their blues are more of the modern upbeat blues, Johnny Taylor, Al Green, Marvin Sease style. Not my baby ran off and never coming back or my dog got ran over blues. I like this CD because it is jammed packed with a variety of sound. If you want to play this CD at a party and just mellow out, then some of the songs you can. If you want to get up and party, then you can. I especially like the tune Mustang Sally and Lawdy Ms. Clady. I will continue to look for more music from these two.

3 out of 5 stars Solid hard rock album.......2006-07-18

Released in 1991, Stranded is the second (and final) album by hard rockers Tangier. Original vocalist Mike LeCompt is back on board for this album, which I tend to prefer over the band's debut Four Winds. You wouldn't know it by Tangier's bluesy, Southern-influenced rock & roll, but the band actually hails from New Jersey. Similar to bands like Baton Rouge and Tora Tora, Tangier has a bit more swagger than most hair metal bands from that era. It's nothing you haven't heard before, but if you're into late 80's to early 90's hard rock, chances are you'll enjoy this one.

The track listing is as follows:

    1. Down the Line
    2. Caution To the Wind
    3. You're Not the Lovin' Kind
    4. Since You Been Gone
