Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Top producer Trevor Jackson effortlessly switches genres with real panache, mixing house, rap, funk, electro-pop and post-punk stylings in hugely entertaining fashion. There is a distinct 80's feel as on the anthemic single 'Number One', the no-wave disco tribute 'Bring It On' and the ESG-style 'Make It Happen'. Edwyn Collins and Roddy Frame make appearances, as does Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna, manic saxman Ted Milton of Blurt and forgotten hero of acid house K.C. Flightt, while dancehall mighty mouth Shinehead rumbles belligerently through a cover of Paul Simon's '50 Ways To Leave Your Lover'. 2001 / Source Records Release

More Playgroup Favorites piles on a second batch of predictable songs--nothing you won't find on any preschool compilation--the main difference being that they're sandwiched between a solid five tracks of Mommy & Me-specific songs. "Shake My Hand (Hello Song)" and "Take My Hand (Goodbye Song)," call to mind snuggly together time for moms and tots across the country, and this CD capitalizes on their lovey-dovey devotion to the weekly groups that make interacting (goofing around on the floor and clapping out simple rhythms together) mandatory. Nothing wrong with that--some parents will even salute themselves for extending the enriching environment to their living room rugs. But this kind of fun, can grow formulaic fast, despite the performers' best stabs at loopiness. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Awful!.......2007-03-19
The writers have taken classic songs and added really poor quality lyrics:
Ride ride ride your bike
Down the busy street
Isn't it surprising
All the kangaroos you meet
Awful!
The song segments are terribly edited: the moms' mouths don't sync with the soundtrack at all. The cartoon segments are cheesy and poorly animated. The belching kangaroo only adds to the nausea I get when my wife plays this video.
To be fair, my daughter really enjoys it. But she also enjoys Sesame Street and Disney stuff. Don't waste your time.
Great CD!.......2006-03-24
My son has this one and the Playgroup Favorites, and he loves both (and has since he was an infant). The songs are catchy and not too annoying for the grown-ups. Really keeps him entertained! Highly recommend buying.
FANTASTIC CD!.......2004-02-21
My daughter, Emily and I are having the BEST time in the car since we've been listening to "Mommy and Me, More Playgroup Favorites." Now when we get in the car, Emily immediately yells out: "MOMMY ME!" which means, crank up the tunes mom! Once the CD starts playing, Emily recites all the words to the songs, which I was very surprised to hear. The original songs like "Mommy & Me," "Shake My Hand," and "Take My Hand," written by Marty Panzer, are quickly becoming cherished favorites in our family. Panzer has also written fresh new lyrics to classics like, "If You're Happy And You Know It," " Head Shoulders Knees and Toes," and "Row Row Row Your Boat," among others. It's shocking that this wonderful CD has replaced the Wiggles as my daughter's new favorite obsession! Even my husband hums the tunes to himself when we get in the car for a family outing. Thank you for bringing such wonderful music into our lives!
Stephanie Berk, mom of Emily, 21 months
Another wonderful album for bonding with young ones!.......2004-02-20
More Playgroup Favorites is another great album to play while spending bonding time with your baby and young ones! Check out the first album- Playgroup Favorites, too! Both feature sophisticated and modern arrangements of classic childhood tunes, produced by an award-winning team, including jazz versions of well-known favorites. Both CDs are PERFECT for playgroups, playdates, parties, and at-home fun. Not only is the music sensational, but parents cherish the time they spend with their young children, and they welcome tools like these CDs to help them make the most of the experience.

Parents spoiled by the "family music" phenom--those who have come to expect that the music they buy for their kids will appeal to them as well--will be disappointed in Mommy & Me's "Playgroup Favorites." However, the CD does have its strengths--Mommy & Me veterans and current attendees will be instantly prepared to sing along with the first two tracks, "Mommy & Me" and "Shake My Hand," and the rest are no-brainers: graspably goofy renditions of "B-I-N-G-O" and the like. Suggested activities--moderate movement for some songs and aerobic cool-downs for others--make following the musical playgroup agenda at home a breeze, and the split-track format (the second half of the CD is an instrumental repeat of the first) keeps the floor-based fun going strong long after everybody has hugged themselves goodbye during "Take My Hand." --Tammy La Gorce

A good collection of classic songs. My son is 17 months old and has loved this (and the More Playgroup Favorites) since he was an infant. Highly recommend!
Wonderful album for playgroups & parent-child fun!.......2004-02-20
This album is amazing. I love the modern arrangements of classic childhood songs. This album is PERFECT for playgroups, playdates, parties, and just at-home fun. Not only is the music sensational, but it is a great tool for focused time between parent and child. Parents cherish the time they spend with their young children, and they welcome tools like these CDs to help them make the most of the experience. You should also check out More Playgroup Favorites- another great album from Mommy & Me.
Playgroup Favorites CDs Provide a Great Way to Bond.......2004-02-11
With parents' time at a premium these days, resources like Mommy & Me CDs and DVDs are very helpful.
These classic childhood songs were produced by a top songwriting-production team of Marty Panzer (Pocahontas II, The Lion King II) and Gregg Field (Now Dig This! A Vocal Celebration of Miles Davis, Earth). Both Mommy & Me CDs include 20-page activity guides with full lyrics, expert child development information and ideas for parents and kids to play and sing along with the music. These CDs provide a great way for parents and children to play and bond together - even when they can't get to the playgroup sessions.
Mommy & Me is a national playgroup phenomenon that has become an integral part of today's parenting experience. When parents think of playgroups, they think of Mommy & Me. Millions of parents and their children have attended more than 350,000 parent/child classes and playgroups on a weekly basis over the past 30 years. Mommy & Me has incorporated its breadth of real-life experience with parents and young children, and the expert advice of early childhood educators around the country, to create the Together Time music and videos. The Mommy & Me experience relies on music to keep the fun rolling. The songs and activities on Playgroup Favorites and More Playgroup Favorites are educational in the broadest sense, but the main benefit is enhanced communication and bonding between parents and children. Take a look at the mommyandme.com website, too, to locate playgroups in your area!
LOVE THIS CD!.......2004-02-07
My 2-year-old daughter, Emily, and I have the BEST time
while listening to the Mommy and Me Playgroup Favorites CD
going full blast!
The songs are fantastic! They are the classics,
like "Itsy Bitsy Spider," with a new fresh twist.
We especially love "The Grand Old Duke of York"
(with a fun fifties spin), "A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea,"
and of course "The Wheels on the Bus."
The new lyrics by Marty Panzer are whimsical, original,
and so much fun for moms and kids to enjoy together.
When we're in the car, my daughter actually cries when I turn the engine off, she just doesn't want the music to stop!
We're looking forward to hearing this CD for a long time to come!

Album Description
On Reproduction, Trevor shares his finest remix moments, with 16 tracks from some of clubland's most recognizable names reinterpreted into house anthems. Full to the brim with his trademark fat production, driving basslines, gritty hats and rough guitar licks, Trevor Jackson hits a dance floor formula, that is at once accessible, unique and deeply underground.
Customer Reviews:
who wouldnt?.......2006-05-28
its too bad that this isnt a watered down, mass-marketed, commercialized release because it would be nice to be able to play it in the club i dj at without getting balls busted. the bass lines are too funky and driving for todays shallow music market; the vocals surpassing anything on the radio its just a shame that our friend playgroup couldnt be a top 40 artist and has to make masterpieces that one would think others would move to. Songs that cant be denied apparently are being denied. this was ofcourse all sarcasm. buy this cd not to be passed up.
f**k yeah!.......2005-09-22
the vocal on the chromeo-you're so gangsta remix alone makes this album worth buying!!!

Trevor Jackson, formerly known as hip-hop producer the Underdog, has built up some serious beat credentials over the years--the kind that would make most "underground" artists look like manufactured boy bands. Even his recent Playgroup project--by far his most accessible and "poppy" work to date--retained a keep-it-real feel amid the shiny, feel-good blend of punk, hip-hop, funk, and disco. Here, he presents the next installment of K7's esteemed DJ Kicks series. With over two decades of involvement with music under his belt and no associations to any fixed genre, Jackson must have had a nightmare trying to slim his options down to album length. He's done it, though, and with skill and aplomb, stringing together 23 tracks that range from the '70s-'80s era of Human League ("Do or Die") and Flying Lizards ("House of Jealous Lovers") to more modern offerings like Metro Area's "Caught Up" and I:Cube's reworking of Ana Rago's "You're God." On the whole, the mix feels both retro and contemporary, its subtle asperity fitting in nicely with the current revival in '80s electro. An entertaining and educational mix from one of Britain's longest-serving electronic talents. --Paul Sullivan
Album Description
The DJ Kicks series is very proud to present - 'DJ Kicks - Playgroup'. The stunning mix was produced by London's Trevor Jackson, the mastermind behind the highly acclaimed Playgroup project. For it, Trevor Jackson came up with a selection that reflects many of his musical influences from the past years. You'll find all time heroes like the Human League or KC Flightt as well as current hotsters like Smith 'N' Hack or Metro Area. There's New Yorks no-wave revivalists The Rapture close to original punk funksters The Flying Lizards, Manchester's Jay Walk & the great I Cube Mix of Ana Rago. Trevor Jackson blends music from more than two decades of club & dance culture into a superbly funked up mix. No doubt, the 'DJ-Kicks - Playgroup' will boost Mr. Jackson into orbit. K7. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
sleazy and fun........2003-11-27
Having been so enraptured of this guy's "Party Mix V.1" that I promptly made copies for all of my friends, purchasing Jackson's "DJ-Kicks" installment was a no-brainer, despite some overlap in the tracklisting ("Tainted Love," "Broken Mirror").
It's a slow-burner that simply grooves right along, gradually picking up speed. When Adam Goldstone's "The Sky is Not Crying" started to filter in, I just about leapt out of the chair. This has been one of my favourite dance tracks over the years; lots of mood, a bit sleazy without being tasteless...an apt description of this mix, if I may resort to cliche.
Starting with CJ Bolland and Carl Craig, then to K&D et al and now back to 'techno' all over again, it's been interesting to see the DJ-Kicks series and Studio !K7 evolve over the years.
Electro heaven!.......2002-12-20
I have a few electro compilations that feature Trevor Jackson's (Playgroup) work and liked that stuff tremendously. Also, I am very critical and picky about my music and what I rave about. I have to say this is probably my favorite album of the year. Inherently dance-y, '80's influenced, but not entirely of that era, if you weep sofly with glee when you hear Yaz in a club, then look no further. Songs don't last long enough for you to get bored with them and some of the segues are phenomenal. And I haven't heard of practically all the artists on the CD, so it opened me up to some real hip stuff as well. Just awesome.

dance to the beat, shuffle my feet..........2003-11-15
Trevor Jackson's "Party Mix" is certainly the best argument for the Eighties this listener has yet to hear. Over two hundred classics from 1979-90 are strung together in a logical, occasionally witty mash-up. Each track is given about sixteen seconds. The disc is marked "promo-only". If you see it, snatch it up.
Here are a few that I could remember:
"Was Dog A Doughnut", "Change Beat", "Atomic Dog", "Soul Makossa"
"Erotic City", "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "Genius of Love"
"I Wonder If I Take You Home", "The Breaks", "Billie Jean"
"The Message", "Boogie Down Bronx","Galaxy",
"Pull Up to the Bumper", "Problemz D'Amour", "Shari Vari",
"Blue Monday", "It's My Thing", "Adventures on the Wheels of Steel",
"Good Times", "Rapture", "Computer Games","Magic's Wand", "The Breaks"

The Only Playgroup Worth Signing Up For.......2006-10-06
This is the real thing. The original, the best playpen for your ears. The name Playgroup was later misappropriated by a pretender of far less talent than the boys playing on this disc, who include the formidable Bruce Smith, George Oban, Style Scott, Steve Beresford, Gerry Malenkani, Lol Coxhill. And let's not forget to mention the Prisoner, Crocodile, Kishi, Bongo, and the one and only Bubblers. Guys who don't muck around.
From the On U Sound stable of sound engineering, with the great Adrian Sherwood at the helm, all of these tunes still sound epic. Check out, in particular, The Slither, Burn, Ballroom control, Going overdrawn, and Going for a song. Each one a dub masterpiece.
Be forewarned.......2002-08-21
this is not the same playgroup aka trevor jackson. that doesn't necessarily make this a bad cd, just not the retro sleaze we've come to love :)
also, the 4 star review i gave this cd is not accurate, but i could not post without giving stars.
