    The modern-day traditional Jewish music revival is filled with artists exploring klezmer's Eastern-European roots, but you'll hear no clarinet and little violin on cantor/educator Richard Kaplan's Life Of The Worlds. Although these are traditional songs, there is a broad range of the Diaspora represented on his second album, including Afghani, Spanish, Moroccan, and Algerian traditions. Kaplan dives into the sacred and the secular, the prophetic and the exultant, finding commonalities amongst different tribes and fusing them together. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of an occasional flute, piano, and violin as well as Moroccan clay drums, oud, dumbek, and other pre-modern-era instruments, but the instrument at the center of each song is Kaplan's voice--his high baritone majestically soars, quavers with sensitivity, and rings out with joy. To hear him sing solo versions of traditional Niggiun is to hear a world-class master savor the multifaceted nuance of each note and transcend the concept of song, turning it into religion and high art. --Tad Hendrickson

    A remarkable collection of vocal performances of Jewish sacred music from the Middle East, Andalusia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia - songs of exultation, longing, love, and Divine immanence - accompanied by an ensemble of masterful musicians.

    Instruments include: oud, ney, kanun, Egyptian accordian, violin, mandolin, dumbek, doira, riqq, Yemenite can, tar, saz, clarinet, mey (Turkish duduk), tilinca (Rumanian shepherd's flute), piano, string bass, balaban (Klezmer drum set), cimbalom, and a chorus of voices.

    Among many special songs, the CD features an 'eco-lament' (ecological lament) based on lament melodies for the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It is called "Lament on the Destruction of the Garden of Eden" (Kinah Lekhurban Gan Eden), and updates the use of these tunes to mourn the wounding of our larger temple, Gaia - Mother Earth.

    LIFE OF THE WORLDS contains 18 songs, 77 minutes of music, and contains a 32-page booklet which includes informative song descriptions; all texts are provided in transliteration, English translation, and in Hebrew or Yiddish.

    This CD was three years in the making, and presents the first recordings in North America of several songs from the treasure-chest of Jewish sacred music.

      The Batz are a bit like the Stray Cats ... in fact there is a decent live cover of "Rock This Town" near the end of the disc. As a rule, the guitar work is not as strong as Setzer, but the riffs are pretty sharp and the singer of the Batz is better. My only complaint with this album is the first half of the disc -- the songs sound too alike, and the guitar is too "clean" in the mix. However, in the second half of the disc the production adds a nice edgy, reverb laden sound, such as in "Streetwise" and "Electra Glide in Blue." If you are looking for other obscure psychobilly bands, check out The Road Kings self-titled album (the one with the cards on front) -- it's absolutely brilliant.

      This album would be a good buy for someone who hasn't yet heard any Guana Batz but is interested in hearing them at their best. It's got their most well known tracks as well as a couple live ones - and my personal favorite, their cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire".

        sample a couple of cuts, check out loanshark, king rat and lady of the night and then buy this cd you wont be sorry.

          Guana Batz are one of the most successfull psychobilly bands with double-bass. Psychobilly is always joking on everything, including old Rock'n'roll and other music styles. Here is a whole CD of cover songs which Batz recorded in the 1980's.
          26 tracks, 8 are live tracks, some are previously unissued. Exellent Elvis Costello's "Radio Sweetheart", great "Please, Give Me Something", and Biker Knight's "Bring My Cadillac Back" are highlights for me. When Biker Knight got it, he said: "I got a kick out of hearing it." Good to hear such words from the original writer of the song.
          Very nice album, I would like to give it 5, but as here are only cover-songs, so only 4. The Guana Batz own songs are great, too.

              Richard Kaplan continues to amaze me. His last CD was so good. Yes, he is a cantor. Yes, he is a ethnomusicologist. But, boy, can this guy sing! I know it's his voice I am hearing, but sometimes I believe I am hearing his heart sing. I buy his music to give as presents. I buy them for my kids and my granddaughters. This new CD has all the words in English, Hebrew and transliteration. I wanted to learn all the words and melodies to the last CD, and ended up paying someone to transcribe transliterations for me. This CD has new songs, old songs set to new music, and some original work by Kaplan. The Jewish community is richer for the work of Richard Kaplan.
