I bought this album for one song b.c. I was desperate. It is the only song that I listen to!

5 out of 5 stars The first total.......2007-03-30

bad boy records still rule and total to me was one of those awesome randb groups.

4 out of 5 stars Every Bad Boy Needs A Bad Girl.......2007-02-24

The group Total came out when Bad Boy was on top and they really stoodout for a while. On their debut, this album was pretty solid although they didn't have the best voices the choice of songs showcased their vocals well. Pam had that distinct voice that you knew a Total song when you heard it. Keisha was the savvy one, and Kima had a baby voice. Anyway the best tracks on the album are "Don't Ever Change", "Kissin' You", "No One Else",and "Spend Some Time". There really aren't any filler tracks so if you haven't already should definitely check out these "former" Bad Girls.

5 out of 5 stars Top tunes.......2006-12-22

I've had this since it came out in 96, i used to play it in the clubs then, and people still borrow it to play in the clubs now..... that speaks for itself!!!

3 out of 5 stars Total - actually 3.5 stars.......2006-10-01

I listened to this disc for the first time in a while and was again surprised at how good a debut this is. This album debuted at a golden time for Bad Boy Records and the tone and brash attitude of the trio instantly distinguished them from the other r&b girl groups of that era. The monster hit off of the disc is CAN'T YOU SEE which still sounds great years later.

The second huge single, KISSIN YOU is such a sweetly groovin' ballad and showed that the group wasn't only going to be the background vocalists for Bad Boy's rappers.

Other standout singles to me are: NO ONE ELSE, TELL ME, LOVE IS ALL WE NEED & DON'T EVER CHANGE. Although the producers used a fair amount of samples, like on Mary J. Blige's MY LIFE, they were used in a fresh way which created a new sound for a new group.

I'd recommend this disc to anyone who's curious about not only early Bad Boy artists but also how this group sounded in comparison to some of the other r&b girl groups out at that time.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Hyped to no end when they first exploded on the scene, the women of Total reminded us that behind every bad boy is a bad girl--and they're back, not to be outdone by fellow erotic ingénues like Foxy Brown and Monifah. Despite the curious British-accented "Yo, bitch, turn this fucking music up" intro, "I Tried" is a slinky late-night groove that showcases Kima, Keisha & Pam's blend of sweet vocals, suggestive lyrics, and kicking beats. Even if each track begins to sound like the last, it doesn't matter when they all sound this good. From the slow-motion steam of "Press Rewind" to the stoned funk of "Move Too Fast," the girls--as obsessed as they are with more carnal concerns--deliver. --Rebecca Wallwork

5 out of 5 stars Kima, Keisha, & Kpam.......2006-04-16

There's no denying the musical genius presented here by Kima, Keisha, and Pam. This is a fantastic cd that everyone should own.

Having said that, I've always thought the name of their act could have been better. I've always thought they should have been called Kima, Keisha, and Kpam instead of Kima, Keisha, and Pam.

I'm not dissing Pam by saying that. I love Pam. Next to Pam Dawber, she's my favorite Pam.

But since Kima and Keisha's names start with a 'K,' it would have looked cooler if Pam's name also started with a 'K.'

She wouldn't have had to pronounce it that way. It could have been a silent 'k' like in the words knit and knap.

Oh well.

5 out of 5 stars Off the Heezy.......2005-09-27

I really thought this cd was well developed. I think the girls have truely matured and with their second album showed us what the real Total was all about. The whole cd was great especially the two singles that were dropped "Trippin" and "Sittin at Home." But in addition i also enjoyed "Bet She Can't" "Rain" "Move Too Fast" and "Press Rewind" Although I would have to say due to the raunchy lyrics the age group definately went up on this cd, I think it was great and deserves much props.

5 out of 5 stars Kima, Keisha, and Pam-The mature Total also known as bad girls of Bad Boy.......2005-05-13

I remember this album when I was in the 6th grade. It was blazing. The return of the girls on this album are revived, polished, and mature. On the album, Their flava is poignantly displayed. Missy Elliott wrote 6 of the album's tracks. The single,Trippin, shows us the familiar funky side of Total. The girls co-wrote 7 songs on the album. This album has been certified Gold. Remember, this was 1998-1999.

4 out of 5 stars Bolder and tougher than their debut! .......2005-02-06

I thought that Total's second album from 1998 was far better than their first album. Bolder, tougher and edgier than the Puffy dominated debut! The shift to Missy Elliott was a smart move as she and Timbaland handled many of their songs. I like Trippin' and I Tried as well as many of the others. The songs have a more sexual tone than the safe feel of the debut. I liked the funky remix of What About Us, which is heavy on the beats. Maybe the album's coarser themes didn't grab many people that year. They'd still be out there now if they had to. Total actually sound good over Timbaland's choppy rhythms and beats. The throwaway song on here is that Khris Kellow-produced ballad. This Diane Warren-written ballad doesn't work for them here--it's too light a song to match with their bad girl image. I still say this is the better Total album and the right one to match with that bad girl, no nonsense feel of theirs.

4 out of 5 stars Total-ly What An Album Is Supposed To Be!.......2004-11-01

Total's album came out in 1998 but I didn't listen to it until 2003. I was too young to listen to it in 98 because I was only 8-years-old, but to be able to hear an album from 5 years ago and still have it sound like it isn't old or something dug up from the closet is amazing. Total's album is filled with Pam (the lead singer)'s powerful, diva vocals, Keisha's sexy voice, and Kima's innocent, playful style. Pam stands out on this album. Her vocals are amazing especially on the interludes which are like little songs in themselves. From beginning to end, you are singing-a-long and dancing to the music. It was a great album.

This debut features a sparse blend of clanging percussion, aggressive bass riffs, and impassioned screaming. In spirit, the music is industrial, yet it manages to avoid the cliches critics associate with the genre (such as overly processed vocals, and megadistorted guitar sounds). The songs dispense with traditional notions of melody and harmony, focusing instead on percussive innovation and rhythmic variation. Although monophonic synth lines comprise the only tonal instrumentation, the upbeat tempos, relentless vocals, and percussive embellishment prevent the arrangements from growing tedious. --Michael A. Massa

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Late 80s industrial breakthrough.......2007-03-09

I still remember the first time I watched the video for "Murderous" on "120 minutes" in the late 80s, back when MTV used to play music videos. I was lucky enough to record it on VHS, and I watched it all over and over again for months. A friend in school ended up buying the album, made a copy for me, and I was transformed. The heavy beats, the energy, the hard pumping synth, the angst in the lyrics, all resonated with me.

I was extremely lucky to catch them live in the early 90s ("Ebbhead Tour"), and to this day, I still think it was one of the best live performances in a small venue I have ever seen...very visual, very goth-like, up to par with Front 242's live show around the same time.

This is definitely a very "pioneer" production, and their best effort. This album is what made them who they are today, even though they deviated from this sound, to what some consider a more "watered-down" version. And incredible industrial gem. 5 Stars.

2 out of 5 stars This is not industrial... this is just loops........2007-01-08

This band might have share the same years in which industrial was popular, but they sound annoyingly repetitive. Wherever I go, if I search for FRONT 242 music I always end with these guys in the list, like if you like these you might like these too. Well, not really. FRONT 242 uses loops too, but they don't make the loops the entire song. This guys probably are cool if you like for example the Andy Warhol movie where he filmed the empire state building for 24 hours. No dialog, no music, one shot. If you can stand that type of movie, this music is for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Best by Ebb.......2006-05-24

I had the privalage of seeing them live in 1990,,,
with Depeche Mode.....it was one of the best shows
I have ever seen.....

This cd is far and away their best...the site says it came out in 1990 I think it was actually like 1988,,,Showtime is good to...but Total Age is GOLD>>>>>>>>

Fire fire fire fire ,,,,burn burn burn

1 out of 5 stars no music here.......2006-04-12

For someone trying to get into "industrial" this is not the way to go. Hell, I wouldn't recommend this album to anyone.

Here's what's on it: VERY simple drum tracks from a very old, annoyingly fake sounding drum machine and VERY plain synthesizer loops. There is no musical value here; there are at most 2 synth loops on top of a drum track and vocals. The loops aren't interesting at all, just a hand full of notes played over and over. The singing gets irritating after the fourth track.

When I first picked up the album, I thought it had potential but now I realize it does not. If you are thinking about buying it, I HIGHLY recommend listening to it before you buy, this is not for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars i used to be overweight...........2006-03-18

Until i bought this album! Right from the first song, this album commands you to do something physical or active. I started jogging after the first few listens, and although it did hurt at first, you eventually forget about it and lose yourself in the fast paced beats, and the amazing basslines. The shouting vocals also helped, they acted as though they were being sung by a drill seargant at a boot camp. It is impossible to sit still during this album. just get it if you need exercise, or if you just want something agressive yet not headache inducing. You will realise that there is a purpose to fitness!

      Album Description

Franco-German duo Stereo Total (Françoise Cactus and Brezel Göring) release their seventh album that is totally devoted to the discotheque. These tracks won't feel entirely unfamiliar, as this is a super compilation of rare tracks, new songs and remixes from albums past and previous collaborations, all mashed up for your disco pleasure. Known for their quaint electropunk, kitsch and speed, Stereo Total provide a new perspective to their old sounds and on hitting the dance floor. Discotheque features new versions of some tracks from their last album Do The Bambi, reworked rave-ups of 'Europa Neurotisch' and 'Babystrich' and rare songs from side-projects and remixes from acquainted bands Motor Mark (UK) and Jacno (France). Remixer Echokrank, a crazy Berliner transvestite outfit on Klangkrieg Produktionen reworks 'Everybody In The Discotheque (I Hate)' in true Rocktendo form. 'Bad News From The Stars' is a reggae-touched freaker from Brezel Göring's last solo record with Barom One, now available on CD for the first time. The CD version will also include the 'Das Erste Mal' dub-inspired versions mixed by Munk and Justus Köhncke and the Do The Bambi remixes, originally only available in limited vinyl pressings on Disko B Records. Also includes new versions of the inspired re-takes of Nico's 'Chelsea Girls' and The Rolling Stones' 'Mother's Little Helper'. 5 out of 5 stars Superb compilation.......2007-01-26

I, too, am surprised that more people haven't reviewed this CD. I think it's the best Kompakt compilation and it's one of my favorite collections ever. There is a lot of variety: "Wellen" and "Action" (by The Field, not listed on the track listing on Amazon) are smooth minimal tracks; "The Difference It Makes" is a phat trance song; "Krieg" and "I Built This City" are gritty, dark, industrial tracks; "Hotlove" is a cute and swanky club song... and so forth. A brilliant collection and a must-have for anyone who likes progressive trance/ambient/electronica.

5 out of 5 stars The best *KOMPAKT compilation.......2005-11-26

First of all; I can't believe nobody has reviewed this item before, second; I wouldn't give 5 stars to anything I like, I'm giving 5 stars because this double album is simply perfect. If you're reading this I assume you know the "kompakt sound" so I won't waste my time describing it. I"ll just tell you that this is, in my opinion, the best Kompakt compilation ever, I own all of the "Total" series, aswell as Kompakt 100, kompakt Pop Ambient, etc.. and many solo releases. And this group of 12 inches singles compilated between end of 2004 and part of 2005 is the best I've heard. Not as "minimal" as the first records by this label, and a lot more funky. Hypnotic beats, eerie sounds, and angelic pads are all over the tracks. A perfect record for home listening (i don't know why but I'd recommend it for sunday afternoon, specially if it's raining). I'm not a DJ, just a music lover, and I write as that, but trust me, these songs would work pretty well in a dancefloor too.

in my last job they always freaked if i put on anything remotely electronic, "ooh I'm at a rave", yawn. they liked this a lot. you can just leave it on in the background and it makes things purr right along, or you can crank it up and enjoy the fine production. plenty of gems.

This was their first single off their hot album, 'Total'. It is really blazing and B.I.G. really blazes the track with his phat lyrics. This song is the bomb diggity.

      5 out of 5 stars Nice introduction.......2007-05-07

I have seen these name thrown around (Acid Jazz and Nu-Soul Mix), but it was not until this disc that I understand the differents. Totally enjoyable.

      5 out of 5 stars I agree with Jeff.......2005-07-29

Track four fails to impress me, but the rest of the CD is pretty good! I wish more acid jazz was available!

      Cheers! M2

      4 out of 5 stars Funk Fortified.......2004-04-06

I was initially disappointed to open the insert and see that some of these cuts are 10 years old, but played it anyway since I had not heard them. I like everything on here except track 4! This is straight up funkdified soul-ish. Tracks 1,2,7, and 9 are the premiums, but this for turning it up loud on your patio with a cold one. Pure unadulterated move your groove thang vibe!
