This is a great cd with all of the hits that you remember..Sound quality is excellent...For some strange reason, have always liked Island of Lost Souls! Buy Today!

5 out of 5 stars Freaking amazing.......2007-04-28

(I'm actually 16, but I'm to lazy to login.)

ANYWAY! This album is amazing. I got this for my 13th birthday when I was in 7th grade, and it was one of the best albums I could have gotten. This album is a good size and has a whole darned lot of songs on it, (all of which, may I add, are great.) I reccomend (sp? lol) this to anybody who has heard Blondie's music before and knows just how great it truly is. Within 3 years of getting this album I now own all of their CDs plus 3 vinyls. It's truly amazing. Blondie are one of the greatest bands in history for sure.

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2007-04-27

This album is by far the greatest. It includes all of the hits from one of the greatest bands. Almost 20 years of great music compacted into one disc. It might be a shame that it is one disc, but the music is as clear as the day the band started.
Blondie stayed true to it's roots, even though time changed.
Rock on to the future.

5 out of 5 stars Mood Altering Music.......2007-04-20

Great collection of Blondie songs.

She's got amazing versatility in her voice.

Her charged spirit is so infectious...she just has no limit to her abilities to vocalize you straight onto the dance floor.

A Great party CD.

5 out of 5 stars A glamourous rock record.......2007-03-09

After listening to the record three times, I found it quite glamourous and chic. The voice of Debbie Harry is quite unique, symbol of an era.

4 out of 5 stars Like Much Of The 80s, Wretched Excess, But Still Fun.......2007-06-30

Most of the tracks on the first disc alone warrant purchasing it at the price offered...however, the second two discs could've been whittled-down to a few tracks that could've replaced some of the softer offerings on Disc One and it would've been one monster CD...still, the wheat can be burned from the chaff on one's mp3/I-Pod, I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-05-14

Any 80's music lover will be happy to have this collection! The selection is perfect. I just love it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-01-12

Another 80's cd that I didn't let slip by. You will also love it, great value.

1 out of 5 stars What a Slow Bore!.......2007-01-11

Of this three disk set, I would say that maybe five songs were worth listening to and even remembered. The rest were slow and so boring. I don't even remember them form the eighties.
If you are looking for an eighties cd. DON"T buy this one. THERE HAS TO BE better ones out there than this one.

5 out of 5 stars We are thrilled!.......2007-01-04

This boxed set is the greatest! I am really enjoying all of it! Great songs.... I love 80's music and this is a great mix!

5 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack of Freedom.......2007-04-13

If I was President (yes, of the US!) in the 1980's, I would do two things: 1) Stop calling the Soviet Union "the Evil Empire" and start referring to them only as "the Hellish Orwellian Nightmare." 2) I would tell my secretary to let Bananarama in the side door daily, as part of a "cultural exchange" program with #1 allies Britain. The sultry trio would roll with me like pastel beach towels around a cling-free sheet in a dryer set on "hot & fluffy". I could then resume my daily regimen of Soviet rollback as refreshed as ever. When "found out", I would give a speech from the Oval: "My fellow Americans. I know a lot of you are suspicious. And you're right to be suspicious -- I shagged them! I shagged them rotten, baby, yeah! It's FREEDOM, baby, YEAH!! Being single, my poll numbers would soar (honesty + great taste in babes), increasing my leverage to end the Orwellian Nightmare a few years early. (Then the same liberals who always said the Soviets would never fall from arms buildup could now say even earlier, "Uh -- the fall was inevitable -um - they crumbled from within... eh.. military buildup and er... your Bananarama sex-inspired supreme confidence... plus your plan to melt the Soviet Iron Will by 'upping their hot babe envy'... in the face of a merely defensive-minded Soviet socialist collective with, mind you, its own attractive figure skaters, did not cause the fall"). Two words - Zip it! And a few more words: If Kylie Minogue was old enough then, the Wall would have come down yet 2 years earlier! Don't mess with a sexed-up American, commies!! And don't mess with Western sex bombs!!**

If you have the "old" disc of Bananarama's Greatest Hits (like me), the new remastered version is still worth getting. A) It's remastered... the sonics are not astounding, but noticeably better. [There must be only a little room for improving (mostly) synth-noises by remastering]. B) This disc has a few more songs, two of which are especially noteworthy. "It Ain't What You Do, It's the Way That You Do It" is done with Fun Boy Three, and has the most ghostly/Specials-esque vocals -- it sounds like the foxy gals are poltergeists echoing this classic (1939) song from the past. And "Rough Justice" has beautiful vocals, as the delectable dishes sing - surprisingly, not about how America ought to break out its pimp hand in the face of the Soviet menace - but about personal pain, and generational cycles of violence. Anyway, the harmonies are gorgeous in "Rough Justice" and the tasty treats' typically "affectless" voices are quite touching. And thank goodness the luscious lasses lived in a land where they could say whatever they cared about. And where they also didn't have to care about *anything* when they chose. (When the lovely lasses are in their "whatever" vocal modes, it's *more* "we don't care" than the Sex Pistols screaming, "We don't care!") It's freedom, baby, yeah!! Let Bananarama sing, and let freedom ring!!!

** In the 1950's and early 60's, some US politicians frightened Americans and won elections by saying there was a "hottie gap", that The Russkies had legions of sexy bombshells who would soon turn American men into drooling zombies! There was indeed a hottie gap -- the *West* always had the *most advanced* hotties! By the 80's, it was obvious -- Bananarama led the hottie race to a whole new level. Then Terri Nunn from Berlin, Dale Bozzio from Missing Persons, Sade, The Go-Go's, Susanna Hoffs, Samantha Fox, Jodi Watley made it obvious that the West was dominant in heat and numbers.... And when the Hellish Orwellian Nightmare saw Kylie Minogue reaching adulthood, they knew it was over -- they would never catch up in the hottie race. Checkmate, commies!!

5 out of 5 stars Whats not to love?.......2007-03-16

Before you read this you need to understand that I am huge Bananarama fan. I adore these women because they used to make make more than great music - they taught us it was OK to have fun with the music. Now that said, I consider this to be the last great album that they cranked out before the group cracked up and decided to go with just Sarah and Kerin alone as a duo singing in tones that only dogs can hear. The truth hurts - you guys were better as a trio.

With Ms. Fahey (who I adore) and Miss Jacquie (who I adore as well, the trio really did great stuff and this CD captures the tail end of the great classic "BananaGlam" era.

This CD has the most noteworthy popular hits from Venus to the match up with Fun Boy Three. All of the song are beautifully engineered and the art work is great.

Evidently mid way through the planning Ms. Fahey decided to drop out and the group was lucky enough to find Ms. Jacquie Sullivan to step in and fill the hole left by Ms. Fahey's voice which anchored the trio and gave their vocalizations some traction. Sullivan did well and the change is virtually seamless in this compilation.

One disappointment is the lack of a track for their one underground dance hit Mr. Sleaze. However if you can track down a video copy of the Greatest Hits video tape you get Mr. Sleaze and the visuals from outtakes from their music videos as well. Its worth it to find it or at least view it on You Tube.

When this came out originally all those years ago it was quite a shock for those of us in the states who were their fans. We had no idea that Fahey left and had no idea who Jacquie was. Fahey's career, sad to say went nowhere after this CD came out and its a shame.

Sadly, without Fahey and her vocals, combined with her fashion sense and quirky knack for finding the right tunes, the group, now a duo, is a parody of its self.

One final note _ The group got back together some years ago for a one off recording of Waterloo for the television show Eurotrash. That recording is on an ABBA tribute album and its good - real good. Gives those of us who hope for a reunion something to wish for. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Bananarama Still Rocks!.......2007-01-12

After twenty some years, I still love the groovey tunes of the Bananarama girls. I could listen to songs like "Robert DeNiro's Waiting," "Cruel Summer," and my fav-o-rite Bananarama tune "Love, Truth and Honesty," a million times and never tire of them. This is a great compliation. And the extra tune with The Fun Boy Three brings back many wonderful memories on mid-80 dance parties. Long Live Bananarama!!

5 out of 5 stars Bananarama - Greatest Hits.......2005-10-08

Upbeat and moving! One that I would enjoy dancing to!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining lightweight pop music.......2005-02-28

Bananarama were one of the most successful British pop groups of the eighties, having a long string of hits with the production team of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. SAW have their critics (and I'm not keen on some of the stuff they produced) but Bananarama were better than most of the other acts they produced. So while their music is lightweight, it is enjoyable and makes great party music.

Bananarama made the top five in the UK with eight different singles while two others made the UK top ten. Two of these (Help / Beatles and Venus / Shocking blue) were covers, the others being It ain't what you do, Really saying something, Shy boy, Na na hey hey kiss him goodbye, Cruel summer, Robert De Niro's waiting, Love in the first degree and I want you back.

My favorite song here is Love in the first degree, which is completely different from the Alabama song with the same title. Similarly, I want you back (another original song) is different from the Jacksons' song, though both were in the UK charts at the same time, the Jacksons' song having been re-mixed.

This compilation contains all their top ten hits and several of their lesser hits including Nathan Jones, I heard a rumour, I can't help it and Preacher man, all of which made the UK top twenty.

5 out of 5 stars Great Twins!!!!!.......2005-11-19

I have heard the thompson Twins since I was in Highschool, and even since I have never been a big fans of "Dance" music The Twins always g ot me. Their music was some of the best examples of 80's Pop. They were in Sync with the times and their audience. Their songs were clear, catchy and the sound amazing. In this album, although not considering their latest works, are really the best examples of their golden time, the most known songs, the ones We remember. There is one Mixed- Extended versions compilation too but for a complete thing, this is the best You can buy. They are still getting me!!

5 out of 5 stars All their good stuff.......2005-09-21

I am really pleased with this cd. I loved the music of this group when I was in highschool. All thier best hits are in this one cd.

4 out of 5 stars Education rather than Review.......2005-09-14

The Thompson Twins took their name from characters in Herge's Adventures of Tintin; Thomson and Thompson (Dupont et Dupond), two clumsy detectives who, although unrelated, look like twins with the only discernible difference being the shape of their moustaches. They provide much of the comic relief throughout the Belgian detective series, as they are afflicted with spoonerism. They are thoroughly incompetent, and always bent on arresting the wrong character usually while wearing inappropriate folkloric costumes.

5 out of 5 stars U have to own one if you were a teenager in 1984.......2001-12-10

This was during Xmas 1984. One lovely girl from Texas brought to Poland (this is where I live) the 10 cassetes pack with "The Best of Billboard - 1984". I still hear this music. Now I can buy a piece of it.

To anyone who was ...teen in 1984: you have to own this one. Don't tell me there is no music you remember from these years. It must be one at least. Remember the first girlfriend. The first kiss maybe? Yes! That's it!.

5 out of 5 stars I want my MTV!.......2000-06-17

This set takes me back to the early days of MTV. Pac-Man fever, Atari and great times in my life. As a child of the 80s it was a special time and special music. This box set helps take you back from time to time!

Album Description

Blondie defies definition. The legendary band is a little bit punk, a little bit reggae, a little bit rock, a little bit new wave, a little bit pop, a little bit hip-hop and a lot of downtown attitude. Already gold in Europe, Blondie: Greatest Hits--Sound & Vision was released March 7 by Capitol/EMI, one week before the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. The new CD/DVD package contains 20 audio tracks and 16 video clips, including the band's biggest hits and previously unreleased remixes. "Rapture Riders"--a mash-up of the band's "Rapture" with the Doors' "Riders on the Storm"--and its accompanying UK music video make their release debut on the new collection.

Blondie's influence on today's artists is undeniable. Debbie Harry and Blondie have been a major influence on superstars like Madonna, Garbage's Shirley Manson, and R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, among many others. They were one of the first groups to emerge from New York's new wave/punk renaissance with an album (1976's Blondie); the first to chart a #1 single, a revolutionaryblend of punk and disco ("Heart of Glass"); and the first to top the charts with both a rap song (1981's "Rapture") and a reggae tune ("The Tide Is High"). And now Blondie have added to their legacy by being selected for induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Sex Pistols, and Miles Davis, as one of two first-time nominees (Davis is the other).

"This is a tremendous honor for us," said the band's lead vocalist Deborah Harry, who is celebrating Blondie's 30th anniversary this year. "We're proud to take our place alongside some of our own idols."

  • CD/DVD with 20 audio tracks and 16 videos, including Blondie classics: "Heart of Glass," "Atomic," "Call Me," "Rapture," "Maria"; previously unreleased remixes of "In the Flesh" and "Good Boys"; and special bonus audio and video tracks: "Rapture Riders"--Blondie vs. the Doors (debut release of the new mash-up of the band's 1980 hit "Rapture" and the Doors' "Riders on the Storm").

  • DVD includes 13 music videos spanning 1977 to 1982, including groundbreaking conceptual clips for "Denis" and "The Tide Is High," as well as their most recent productions for "Maria" and "Good Boys," plus the new music video for the "Rapture Riders" mash-up.

    4 out of 5 stars Missing a few but a solid collection.......2007-07-24

This collection contains most of Blondie's best with a few exceptions, most notably, "X-Offender" and "I'm Always Touched by Your Presence, Dear." Hardcore fans have noted different versions here, but the casual fan will be satisfied with this set. Blondie has always been about style over substance, but definitely has influenced such artists as Madonna and Gwen Stefani. The range of music they cover from rap to reggae also demonstrates rock's amazing ability to encompass many different sounds and this demonstrates Blondie's impact on popular music.
The DVD has a different effect. While the music has a timelessness that will hold up, the videos are like a time capsule showing how much this art form has changed and now ends up being a curiosity. For the most part they are lip sync performance clips with a few very dated effects. You'll watch it once and then forget about it.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic, but far from perfect..........2007-06-14

Blondie is my favorite band and I have all of their albums, so I was curious to compare this collection with their first hits collection, The Best of Blondie (1982), and their other Greatest Hits album from 2002.

Sound & Vision is much better than The Best of Blondie, with vastly improved sound quality and a bigger selection of songs. The only songs that The Best of Blondie contains that this collection does not are "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear" and the original version of "In the Flesh"--the version of the latter on Sound & Vision is an awful remix with brand new vocals by Debbie Harry, and it sounds NOTHING like the original. Sound & Vision is certainly preferable to The Best of Blondie, though, no matter how you look at it.

However, when compared to the 2002 Greatest Hits CD, Sound & Vision doesn't fair quite as well, not taking into account the bonus DVD with music videos. Greatest Hits has nearly every song from this collection--it does NOT include "Good Boys" or "End To End" from The Curse of Blondie, released in 2004, nor the "Rapture Riders" mash-up, but makes up for it with the inclusion of "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear" and "X Offender", two of Blondie's best songs. It also includes the original version of "In the Flesh" in lieu of the pointless remix. Those factors alone, along with the fact that Greatest Hits is quite a bit cheaper than this collection, make Greatest Hits worth getting instead of Sound & Vision.

So, how does Sound & Vision hold up on its own? It is a decent collection of Blondie's most popular songs, but they are mostly radio edits and not the full album versions. They even dared to chop off the openings of "Heart of Glass", Atomic" and "The Tide is High"! Another huge mistake: The incredibly charming French portion of "Sunday Girl" has been removed and substituted by an English translation that the producers must have forced Debbie Harry to record as a backup. The remix included for "Good Boys" is decent, and much MUCH better than the remix for "In the Flesh", but the album version is still the best. The remastering is swell, but in some cases I prefer the remasters of the original album versions (for example, "Union City Blue").

If you're a diehard Blondie fan like me, you will want Sound & Vision for the bonus DVD, which includes some of Blondie's best music videos. These are not traditional music videos because they were all produced before MTV, but rather they are performance videos of the band lip-synching to the studio versions of the songs. My personal favorite of the videos is "Rapture", but "Heart of Glass", "Denis", "Hanging on the Telephone", "Dreaming" and "The Hardest Part" are favorites as well. The worst of them by far is "The Tide of High"--love the song, but the video is T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E.

Most casual listeners will not be concerned with the things I am nitpicking about here. But unless you must have the videos, you would be better off purchasing the 2002 Greatest Hits collection because of the cheaper price tag. Thankfully, I found this collection for $12 used, or else I would have bought Greatest Hits, too.

5 out of 5 stars Blondie Greatest Hits (CD & DVD).......2007-03-10

Fantastic!!! The best songs and the best videos.

4 out of 5 stars One of The Best Blondie Greatest Hits.......2007-01-15

A terrific collection of their greatest hits. Excellent sound quality and comes with a bonus dvd! Although, the re-make of "In The Flesh" I thought was boring and rather dull. Should have just put the original on the line-up and left it alone. It was their first break through hit and the original recording is really pretty. The original recording of "Good Boys" should have been put on there as well. I think the whole thing would be truly excellent had they done that. Otherwise, great collection for Blondie fans and the non alike!

4 out of 5 stars Once I had a band, and they were a gas........2007-01-11

Blondie have finally got the respect they truly deserve. Seeing them inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was pretty cool (they even had an onstage snit to prove they were still loaded with attitude), and this collection is just frosting on the beater.

On the plus side, you get three interesting "new" items. There's a previously unavailable mix of "Good Boys" (from "The Curse of Blondie" CD), a new mix of "In The Flesh" (which doesn't better the original) and an outrageous mash-up of The Doors Vs Blondie with "Rapture Riders" (and its accompanying video!). The interesting thing about the new "In The Flesh" is that you can imagine the new breed of Rock/pop goddesses like Gwen Stefani of Brittany Spears tackling it - and knowing they wouldn't have a peroxided molecule of the sass that Debbie Harry has.

Blondie was always about flash and glamour, which is what made their best albums ("Parallel Lines" and "Eat To The Beat") so charmingly eclectic and their best singles so earth shattering. They were the first "new-wave" band to score a number one with -- Fer crying out loud -- a disco song, and were the very first band to chart a hit rap song that mashed-up rap and pop. (It was nearly 6 years later that Run-DMC would share video space with the resurgent Aerosmith.) Even the lesser know singles are killer. "The Hardest Part" has got to be the fiercest Debbie Harry vocal, and the French/English version of "Denis" is a lost classic.

The DVD is a hoot. It is kind of striking to see these primitive MTV era bits from "Heart Of Glass" and "Rapture." It's worth it just to see the band in their young and hungry stages...hard to believe that the band that recorded the terrific "Maria" were in their 50s. All great archival material.

Minor quibble - single edits. But these were SMASH singles, and it just goes to show you that there is no shame in being a pop band, and there is also no reason a pop band can't have a major impact on popular culture. Thanks to this new CD/DVD set from Blondie, you can now join in with those who call the music of Debbie Harry and company a pleasure without using the word "guilty" as a preface. Although the 2002 "Greatest Hits" is probably a better CD for the casual listener, for us fans, this is absolutely worth the bucks.

as a huge 80s and falco fan, this disc let me down. only a couple of the song sound like i rememberd hearing on the radio. you might be better off buying a diferent falco album, like falco 3. when i was a kid in the 80s i fell in love with "rock me amadeus" and that song is ok, but the komisar doesnt sound right, and the remix at the end has nothing of the origional songs apeal.

4 out of 5 stars what BMG considers "pop" Falco.......2007-04-14

Limited to his first three releases and like most "Greatest Hits" packages, the recording label always seems to leave off the essential material. Falco's Greatest Hits from "BMG" is no exception. What you have here is what "Buddha Records" (obviously not "real" Falco fans) believes to be the relevant Falco recordings. And that's a shame because, even though they've finally re-mastered some of his material (and deservedly so), this should hardly be considered his "Greatest Hits". The omissions are plentiful here. In fact, they would have done Falco more justice if BMG released this as a double CD. But then they would have had to re-master even more of his material. Parrish the thought of that. I'm not sure that tracks like "America" and "Munich Girls" would be considered "Hits" (in the traditional sense of the word) or would even be included on a bootleg hits package when you consider what's left off. No "Ihre Tochter", "Steuermann" or "No Answer (Hallo Deutschland)" (which were huge video treasures from the short film "Helden Von Heute"). "Nur Mit Dir" and the classic "Einzelhaft" were also neglected. What's tragic here is, if you already own "Falco 3"...you're merely re-purchasing it. As the entire 1985 release is presented with the exception of a handful of songs. And that's unfortunate when you consider that "3" wasn't even his best release. However, this compilation is worthy of purchase for Jason Nevins' thunderous radio mix of the classic "Der Kommissar".

4 out of 5 stars Fun fun fun.......2007-03-27

I don't understand most of what Falco is saying, but I don't care. The music is cool and catchy. Der Kommissar is the best -- don't get the one by "After The Fire" . . . they butchered it. Falco, RIP!

4 out of 5 stars Good OL' Musik.......2007-01-12

It was purchased for my 16 year old daughter, but I gave it a listen and remembered a couple of the hits. It brought me right back to 1983-84,Oh Highschool! Fun music from a fun time, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another incomplete Falco Hits collection!.......2006-05-12

Not only is this CD missing the famous Salieri "Do it to me, rock me" Mix of Rock Me Amadeus but it is also missing Naked, Verdammt Wir Leben Noch, Weiner Blut, and what is arguably one of Falco's greatest songs and his final masterpiece, Out of the Dark (Into the Light). I'm a big Falco fan but some of the so-called "hits" are unrecognizable to US listeners and, IMO, not very good: Brillantin' Brutal, Ganz Wien, Helden Von Heute, Hoch Wie Nie, and Maschine Brennt come to mind.

The only other greatest hits collection, "Final Curtain: The Ultimate Best of Falco," is also sadly incomplete. Note that Falco 3 (the original Rock Me Amadeus album) does not have the Salieri "Do it to me, rock me" Mix of Rock Me Amadeus or the extended US mix of Vienna Calling either. You need to find the out of print AMERICAN version of Falco 3 to get both of those; the Salieri Mix is also on several Best of the 80s compilations but not always in its extended version, sometimes it's just the shorter radio edit.

If you like Falco, you might want to check out the German group Modo who sound a lot like Falco, IMO. Their hits include Eins, Zwei, Polizei, Super Gut, and Mein Lebes Tango. Also check out the cool song Rasputin by Boney M which is very similar in nature to Rock Me Amadeus.

First off, I won't argue what's here because these songs are good enough to be in this collection. Now that I got that out of the way, here is the real problem: licencing. Madonna and company are not here for that reason alone. However, by looking at the song list, you may buy the songs you want but don't have. You can also buy each CD separately. There are other options then this to summerize.

I was just going to buy this music box set when I suddenly remembered two great songs of 1985, which are: Born in the USA and Careless Whisper. Am I wrong? or weren't they hits? Where are they? I think they could have left out two other songs and included the ones I mentioned, because they were #1 hits. It just got me thinking that this box set is really not so great.

4 out of 5 stars Where sex and horror are the new gods.......2007-04-03

Frankie Goes To Hollywood was possibly the ultimate in created new wave bands. They made a huge controversial splash, charted one of the most successful singles in the history of the UK and flaunted their homosexuality so blatantly that the Village People would have been proud. "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" was one of the biggest selling double albums in Europe. "Frankie Say..." T-Shirts were everywhere. Brian DePalma directed their video. Then suddenly, it was over. Their second album, "Liverpool," sank like a rock, and the two major figures (Holly Johnson and Paul Rutherford) in the group embarked on minor solo careers. Even so, FGTH meteoric rise and just as rapid fall is marked by songs that still sound as anthemic and ridiculously over the top as they did in 1984-86. They even managed to capture a classic song, in the hedonist anthem "Relax."

That is what "Bang" captures. Thirteen songs are split nine from "Pleasuredome" and four from "Liverpool," each with Trevor Horn's kitchen sink productions and Holly Johnson's drama queen vocals. Horn, who had just started his ZTT label, had learned his lessons with Yes quite well. Both "Relax" and "Two Tribes" were huge sounding records that still have that grandiose distinctiveness of both progressive rock and Hi-NRG dance music. There was nothing else like them, and coupled with the hyper-aggressive marketing, nothing could resist their sonic onslaught.

Once you get past those two signature songs, it is amazing what Frankie had left to say. Granted, the lyrics were sometimes beyond bizarre ("here comes a supernova, what a push-over!"), but the ferocity of "Rage Hard" and the sheer sexuality of "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" do offer proof that the group did have a bit more to them than Horn and hype. The same can not necessarily be said of the band's choice of cover songs. While "Ferry Cross The Mersey" is lightweight enough that it sounds fine in the band's version (and I once read an interview where Gerry Marsden expressed his gratitude to FGTH for making it the B-Side to "Relax," making him an almost instant million in royalties), the decision to cover "Born To Run" seems more like an ego-disaster. Weird thing is FGTH still rock the crap outta the thing, even if Springsteen probably didn't lose any sleep over these guys nicking his signature song. As for Edwin Starr's "War," I always found it interesting that Springsteen covered it and released it as s single later on. Life can be funny that way.

That said, the thirteen songs here sound wonderful even now. The comic-book politics of "Two Tribes" (remember the great video of Ronald Reagan Vs Konstantin Chernenko?) and the uber-gay sexual pronouncements of "Relax" make you almost long for music that was happy to not play it safe, even if it meant your career was going to flame out.

PS. One small gripe. "Bang" has almost nothing by way of liner notes, even with the multifold graphics inlay card. it would have been nice to have a little perspective on the band from someone, maybe a member of even Trevor Horn.

2 out of 5 stars OK.. for the few hits that they have........2006-11-06

I originally bought the CD for 'Relax', which was a big hit in the 80's especially in England. With the exception of a few other hits, it doesn't have much to offer. I was looking forward to the re-makes of Bruce Springsteen's songs, but you can't compare. Basically, if you don't have the CD with 'Relax', then it might be worth it; otherwise there are better ways to spend your $$$. B

4 out of 5 stars Gotta have it!.......2005-08-09

Ron Hardy was a DJ in the Chicago area back in the early 80's. Welcome to the Pleasuredome was one of his theme songs. I had to have it. Oh my gosh, don't let me start singing "When Two Tribes Go To War". I'm lovin' it!

Exactly twenty years ago, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, led by the flamboyant Holly Johnson, was the hottest band to emerge from the UK. From their hit singles to their "Frankie Say Relax" t-shirts, FGTH was as much an attitude as they were a music group. Their songs, often produced by Tervor Horn, were elaborately produced, highly conceptualized, and had all the subtlety of a hand grenade. Not everyone, it must be said, was pleased with the group. And Johnson's coming out as a gay man did nothing to appease conservatives, either. But that didn't stop the hits from coming. Their debut single, the high-NRG "Relax," was banned from the UK airwaves for its explicit lyrics, despite going Number One and sitting comfortably in the Top Ten for several weeks. That song was unseated from Number One by the band's own followup, the politically charged "Two Tribes," whose video was also frowned upon. The third single, the killer ballad "The Power of Love" also went Number One, as did FGTH's debut album "Welcome to the Pleasuredome." But the success was short lived; 1986's "Liverpool" LP was a relative flop and the band called it a day shortly thereafter. Still, "Bang! The Greatest Hits of Frankie Goes to Hollywood," is a great snapshot of FGTH's brief career as a band. In addition to the previously mentioned singles, we get the full-length 13-minute "Welcome to the Pleasuredome," which is far more preferable than the edited single version, "Rage Hard," and their campy cover of Bruce Springsteen's classic "Born to Run." As a bonus, we also get the original, 7-minute mix of "Relax" as well as a 90's update of "Two Tribes." My only complaint is that the liner notes aren't as detailed as they should be. Even so, this disc is worth picking up. If nothing else, it's a welcome trip down 1980's memory lane.

I listen to songs that I had forgotten. Images of another time (when the song was playing) flash through my mind. It is all very comforting and nastalgic. Great album.

Containing a few big late-70s hits like "My Sharona" and "Gold" plus some decent 70s shlock, it's one of the best volumes in the Have A Nice Day series.

    5 out of 5 stars Rating 100%.......2004-05-30

Back in 1990, Rhino records commenced the collaboration of the "Have A Nice Day" compilation series. Ultimately this resulted in a 25 volume set of CD's. All of the discs contain a mixture of top charting hits and obscure classics from the seventies. Many of the discs have come together quite well with a collection of great tracks, whilst some of the other discs are as horrid as my old set of pink flares.

One of the best volumes is number 22. This one contains that guitar stumpin' classic "driver seat" from Sniff and the Tears. What about abit of dance with Hot Chocolates "everyone's a winner" and Nick Gilders "hot child in the City". Feeling romantic? There's Nicolette Larson's "lotta love", John Paul Young's "love is in the air" and Robert John's "Sad eyes". Other tracks include Chris Norman and Suzi Quatro's Duet "stumblin' in" and John Stewart's "gold". I was about age ten when many of these tracks where at the top of the charts. Nothing beats that good old seventies nostalgia. Again a disc that get's a good thrashing at my place.

5 out of 5 stars Rhino sure knows how to pick 'em.......2004-05-17

One of the outstanding members of the Have A Nice Day collection, this disc captures the feel of a turning point in musical styles. Briefly...

"Hot Child In The City": Seductive, androgynous vocals here from Nick Gilder. Listeners appear to have missed the "cautionary" point of this song...everyone wanted to meet the young girl dressed in black.

"Love Is In the Air": A memorable tune from the late 70's, from Aussie singer John Paul Young. It had a brief renaissance when it was included in the Aussie film "Strictly Ballroom" in the early 90's.

"My Sharona": The Knack gave us a preview of the changing attitudes towards the "disco" late 70's with their "garage band" rock tune. Appeared in the slacker/nostalgia flick "Reality Bites".

"Gold": Great vocals by John Stewart, with backup and "ooo-ooo's" by none other than Stevie Nicks!

"Driver's Seat" and "Hold On" are complex, existentialist "mood" pieces with innovative instrumental and vocal arrangements. Contrast these with Rex Smith's bubble gum "Take My Breath Away".

Robert John's "Sad Eyes" is blessed with muscular instrumentalization and one of the finest falsettos you are likely to hear in the modern age.

Besides that, this CD will prove a "fistful of memories" (hopefully good ones) for anyone who grew up during this era. Don't miss out!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD in the series........2002-03-17

Growing up in the 1970s, I was an avid listener to radio (both AM and FM). My dad frequently bought me LPs and 45s (for those of you who are young, you might not remember vinyl *g*) of my favorite songs or songs that he thought I would like.

My favorite songs on this CD are:

Every 1's a Winner (Hot Chocolate). This top 10 hit is by the same group that had a hit with "Emma" and "You Sexy Thing."

Hot Child in the City (Nick Gilder). Number 1 song for the week of October 28, 1978 for one week. This song made the record of the longest time of a song to reach number 1 (taking 20 weeks to go from Number 88 to Number 1).

Love Is in the Air (John Paul Young). This is one of those songs when you were young, you would lip synch in the living room next to the record player. You know you yell out the chorus with arms open wide, "LOVE IS IN THE AIRRRRRR!!! OOOOOHHHHHH!!!!"

Lotta Love (Nicolette Larson). A Top 10 hit in early 1979. This song always reminds me of roller skating at the rinks on Saturday mornings. When listening to the song, I can still hear the skates on the wood floor.

Stumblin' In (Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman). Leather Tuscadero from "Happy Days" recorded a Top 40 hit. This was the biggest American hit for the duet.

My Sharona (The Knack). Number one song the week of August 25, 1979. I had this 45rpm and played it constantly in 1979.

Gold (John Stewart). This is a song that featured Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. You can't miss Stevie's background vocals while she sings a half a beat behind. My favorite line would have to be: "Well my buddy Jim Bash, he is workin' pumpin' gas and he makes $2.50 for an hour." Wow! What a wage!

Driver's Seat (Sniff 'N' The Tears). This song should be on everyone's "car" or "driving" tape or CD for travelling.

Sad Eyes (Robert John). Number 1 the week of October 6, 1979 for one week. This song was tied with Nick Gilder's "Hot Child in the City" for the longest time reaching Number 1 on Billboard's Charts (entered the charts at Number 85 and then 20 weeks later it arrived at Number 1).

This is my favorite volume in Rhino's Super Hits of the '70s series. It brings back those memories of the late 1970s when I was 8 years old and the freedom of being a little kid during the fall of 1978 and the summer of 1979.
