Love disco, but burned out on "We Are Family" and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack? Journey Into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story will satisfy your thirst for lost dance nuggets, with 22 lesser-known tracks from the likes of Chaka Khan, Sister Sledge, and many more. As DJ of NYC's Paradise Garage in the '70s and '80s, Larry Levan created a downtown alternative to the high gloss of Studio 54's exclusive celebrity scene, combining up-tempo R&B dance music with a potpourri of other styles. The Journey Into Paradise collection honors the Garage vibe by focusing mainly on unstoppable disco-era jams--if Change's top 10 R&B charting "Paradise" doesn't get your booty shaking, have a friend check your pulse--with a dose of the modern dance sounds of Yaz and Talking Heads thrown in for variety. The nine tracks included here mixed by Levan contain lush disco arrangements that break down into extended sections of beats and voice backed by minimal accompaniment, anticipating the distilled sound of the house music that would later come to rule the dance floors. On the turntable or in your car stereo, these songs paint the picture of a disco scene more focused on the music than the latest fashion, where feeling good was more important than looking good and a great beat washed away the cares of the world. --Ben Heege

Album Description

One of the few truly legendary figures in the universe of contemporary dance music, the late, great Larry Levan revolutionized the art of the DJ with his soulful and eclectic sets, insanely audiophile rig, and consummate flair as both an innovative remixer and visionary turntable artist. Revered for the pulsing dance floor magic he created as resident DJ ast New York City's famed Paradise Garage- perhaps the most revered club in dance music history - Levan merged underground hits with popular classics of every genre to take the communal dance experience to new heights. A seminal figure in both the disco-defined '70s and house-centric '80s, his innovations reshaped dance music itself and influenced every DJ who would follow.

a must for the Disco/House lovers. Brings back memories of U.S. Studio/The Warehouse: 206 South Jefferson, Chicago!!!

5 out of 5 stars Journey into Paradise.......2007-03-24

Being a devoted member of Paradise Garage when I lived in NY. It brought back fond memories of dancing on the dance floor and chilling on the roof top to the wee hours of the morning. I will never forget Paradise Garage, my best club experience ever was at the Garage. I spent every holiday there and not one time did Larry disappoint me. From seeing Grace Jones perform live to the Peach Boys I will always remember the Friday nights chilling with my friends in the movie theater or the roof top. My hearing today, is not 100% because of the countless times I fell asleep on the speakers and then woke up when I heard "Don't make me wait". It brought back so many memories that when I went to NY and let my sister hear the CD she stole by CD. I will cheris this collection forever and thank you.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, a MUST LISTEN.......2007-03-12

This CD set (2) is a gem. It has classic disco tracks unpublished on cd anyplace else. It also marks a period when music was alive and free. NO room for dancefloor drama, just music to open the soul, and help dance away the weekly troubles. HIGHLY SUGGESTED!

5 out of 5 stars He's got the funk ..........2006-09-17

As a lover of music who's too young to have lived through the wild and crazy times of the Paradise Garage, this CD is loads of fun. Some of these tracks I already have on various compilations or the artists' LPs, but the rarities are a treat. Positive Force's "We Got the Funk," Womack and Womack's "Baby I'm Scared of You" and Phreek's "Weekend" are hot like fire, and the mainstays rock too. Five Special's "Why Leave Us Alone" (which HAS been issued on CD, contrary to what the liner notes say), Trussel's "Love Injection" and Chaka's "Clouds" are drop dead gorgeous even though they are as familiar as old friends. The beauty of the collection is the variety - from high-gloss to underground, major label to indie, rock to soul, this is quite a collage of danceable ditties. A hell of a time and highly recommended. Long live Larry Levan and his legacy of grooves.

3 out of 5 stars What Am I Missing?.......2006-09-25

I have great respect for Larry Levan, and I wish he would have lived to see the impact he had on dance music, but my feeling is that this was an off night for him, because his mixing is really bad! I've been a DJ since the 70's, and I know that back then with live drums (instead of computers and drum machines keeping a perfect beat) and the equipment we had, it wasn't easy to mix from one song to another flawlessly. But, I listen to this CD and I feel like I'm listening to one of my old tapes, on one of those nights when I had one cocktail too many. I guess you had to be there?!

5 out of 5 stars LARRY LEVAN AT HIS BEST.......2006-09-05

IWORKED AT THE GARAGE AND WHEN I HEARD THIS CD ,IT SHOWED LARRY AT HIS BEST.I'VE PURCHASED OTHER CDS BY LARRY BUT THIS ONE WAS EXCEPTIONAL.TO REALLY APPRECIATE LARRY'S MUSIC ,YOU NEED TO HEAR HIS CONTINUOUS MUSIC MIXES MADE LIVE AT THE GARAGE.I AM WAITING FOR HIS OTHER LIVE CDS TO BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE .DON" MISS OUT ON THIS CD.YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED.

5 out of 5 stars Pure class!!.......2006-06-27

This is a great album for Larry Levan fans or just those wanting to hear the mixing skills and music taste of one of the most influential deejays of dance music - from disco to garage to house and beyond.
The mixes may not be as 100% beat perfect as you would get on a CD mixed by one of today's' deejays, but remember that this is a live set with the minor flaws adding to the authenticity and charm. No studio software creation of perfect (and sometimes bland) mixes here. To my mind - and unlike the Studio 54 style - Larry never seemed to pick tracks purely on their "mixability" but rather selected his tracks on musical merit and then did a good job mixing them anyway.

I particularly like his very subtle use of two copies of Stephanie Mills "Put Your Body In It" where Larry starts the record not at it's rather cold intro but at much later vibey break and then continually mixes the same break over and over (if you listen at around 54 seconds and 1 minute 10 seconds and 1 minute 30 seconds into this track you can just pick this).
It's easy to see how he was such an influence on the current house style of sampling and repeating key elements of classic disco tracks. Check out the end of Trinidad by John Gibbs and the U.S. Steel Band where Larry first cuts in My First Mistake by The Chilites. Definitely the inspiration for "Needin U" as released by another Paradise Garage stalwart, David Morales!

This is an astounding set, all the more impressive when you realize it was recorded in 1979 and a piece of history well worth owning.
Buy it now and play it loud!

5 out of 5 stars The Blueprint That All Other DJs Follow.......2006-05-06

Anybody who can't see the relevance of this music and ultimately where ALL DJs got their style then you just don't know music. THIS CD IS THE MASTER DJ AT WORK YOU MUST BUY THIS.
WHEN YOU DO YOU WILL KNOW HOW IT WAS DONE AT THE PARADISE GARAGE. If there is any CD you get PLEASE get this one if you love Organic House Music,Dance Music, or Disco then this CD was made for you. I know that I love it you will too. And to all you DJs who want to compare Larry Levan to "today's standards" if it weren't for Larry Levan paving the way by polishing all the rough ends all you "purists" take for granted YOU wouldn't be out there. So if you truly want to keep Levan's spirit alive as DJs learn and REMEMBER what Larry Levan always KNEW: IT AIN'T ABOUT THE MIX IT WAS ABOUT THE MUSIC. You would do well to remember that when you plug into this CD and hear the Man who put his Soul into the Music and became the Music. Just tune in and feel the Love I sure did. Welcome to Paradise.

Album Description

Available on CD, cassette and limited edition triple vinyl (via DJ specialty shops) this is a compilation of nine tracks remixed (between 1979 and 1982) by Larry Levan, the DJ behind New York's famously influential nightclub, The Paradise Garage. Levan is a producer and remixer who, though he died in 1992, continues to be cited as one of the industry's greatest and most revered. Each of the nine individual full-length tracks was DIGITALLY REMASTERED specifically for this project. The sound quality is brilliant! A supporting series of classic West End Records 12" vinyl singles are being released to compliment this album in the signature West End Records hot pink New York City skyline jackets. The compilation comes complete with comprehensive liner notes giving the label's history, its relationship with Levan and anecdotes about each of the nine remixes and how each came about.

It almost brings a tear even to think of his loss, these sounds here are but a fraction of the love and diversity practiced and preached through his music. I own all these tracks on vinyl, but for any DJ or lover of Garage, this one is essential listening. Don't keep these to yourself, pass 'em along.

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Time Capsule.......2006-04-30

If you want to know where House got its sound and how it all got started this CD is required listening. Original House is basically DISCO. Everyone who calls themselves DJs should have ANY AND ALL of Larry Levan's music available because without Him neither Paradise Garage NOR HOUSE music and it's many subgenres (GARAGE Music being one and owes its NAME to the legendary club)would have been what they were. His music selections were not just TOP 40 songs or the garrish POP MUSIC format that has infested modern music today. The songs were better yet the description of the Soul Of A Man. How many DJs TRULY do it like Larry Levan did? I doubt you will find any no matter how good these Djs out here are now there had to be one to pave the way for all the rest.Larry Levan was that one. Buy this CD if you don't have it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Deep Disco Collection.......2005-11-19

Larry Levan snd Salsoul?? How much more can be said other than of corse this is classic by all means. If you're new to deep disco then this is a great place to start your collection. For those of u who already know this nothing more can be said. MUAHH

5 out of 5 stars Worth the cost for "Make It Last Forever" Alone!!!!.......2005-03-25

This compilation is one of the VERY few that feature the full length version of Jocelyn Brown's Garage classic "Make It Last Forever." EVERYTIME I hear the first few bars of that song I go back to Paradise...and remember hearing the song while up on the roof watching the sun come up. I would always head toward the floor, because Larry would work this song...gonna make it last forever!!! An essential Larry Levan classic!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars No mixing!.......2003-09-11

Very good tracks, but didn't mix any of the great songs. A little dissappointed, but will keep the CD anyway. If your not looking for a mix then this CD will give you the enjoyment you need from a Great DJ like Larry Levan.

5 out of 5 stars a tribute to larry.......2002-03-20

This CD is dedicated to greatest dj ever, the selection made by François Kevorkian is simply awesome and features some very rare grooves, you should have it already ;)

This is a true representation of Larry Levan on a classic Friday or Saturday night at the "G" as patron affectionately called one the best clubs in New York history - the Paradise Garage. Anyone who wants some foreplay into a disco orgasm should pick this up. Bougie Bougie alone, should get you off in true Paradise Garage form. Long Live the G!

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing..........2004-03-09

This 2 cd set is amazing. I don't have any other words to describe it. It's simply one of the best CD's i own.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely flawless!.......2003-01-26

Those who heard Larry live knew it was NOT about the tightest beat mixing, it was all about the flow and energy of the crowd and the message in the music, something that 95% of today's DJ's have forgotten. This truly takes you back in time to the late 70's, in New York, in a VERY mixed club crowd, in one of the best nightclubs ever to grace us and transforms you from merely listening to the music to being a part of it. If you want a greatest hits package, this ain't it! But if you want to hear what it was REALLY like, not just the Top 40 hits, you will not find a better package than this. Househeads will truly enjoy this, they get it!

      4 out of 5 stars classic.......2002-07-09

i would have to agree with one of the other's review the mixes are not as smooth as they can be but you get the message in the music he has some good classics on here it's worth the buy

      Album Description

New York's Paradise Garage. One of the most influential and most documented clubs in the history of dance music. The myth of the Garage (as it is known) and the clubs famed DJ Larry Levan has intensified since the club closed in 1987 and it is still rated by all who were there as one of the finest of all time.

Emerging from New Yorks gay disco scene, the Garage followed the early 70s lead of David Mancuso's Loft and Nicky Siano's Gallery by firmly placing the DJ at the focus of the club. Larry Levan had previously gained a strong reputation from spinning at the Continental Baths (alongside Frankie Knuckles) and Michael Brody's Reade Street and when Brody laid down plans for a much larger, more ambitious venture, Levan was the automatic first choice. Brody's vision was revolutionary. In 1976, in a huge parking garage on King Street, in New York's SoHo neighborhood, he began construction parties with a view to creating, in that space, the finest club in New York . Unlike Studio 54, Xenon, New York New York and the other style clubs of the day where you went to see and be seen, people would go for the music, the dancefloor experience. Although the club was membership only (purchased annually after an interiew at the club), all were welcome--men, women, black, latin, white, gay, straight.

Brody had been a keen clubgoer for years and, by the time the whole building had been developed, he had cooked up a potent stew. The sound system was incredible, designed by audiophile Richard Long, the non-alcoholic bar provided free punch and fruit all night. The lighting was tight. And Levan controlled the crowd. People went there to dance and dance all night and they were under Levans spell.

Although much has been said about the Garage and bootleg tapes of Levan sessions have surfaced, there has never been a live DJ set by Larry Levan at the Garage made commercially available. Strut, in conjunction with New York's West End Records, are proud to release Larry Levan Live At The Paradise Garage, a classic set recorded live from the Garage DJ booth in 1979. The tapes capture the full spirit of the club with the emphasis on great tunes. This was a time when the message was in the music, a time before todays obsession with fluid mixing and Levan mixes up a host of tracks which were fresh at the time which have since become classics. From the soulful heights of Shalamar and Ashford & Simpson to the funkier grooves of Motown Sounds and Crown Heights Affair, this album a joy throughout.

The album is a testament to a club that has never been surpassed before or since for the sheer intensity of emotion that it created. Garage-heads still carry their membership cards with them. All become teary-eyed when they talk of the club. Larry Levan tragically passed away in 1992 but the spirit of the Garage lives on.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must have!!.......2005-09-20

This is a great album for Larry Levan fans or just those wanting to hear the mixing skills and music taste of one of the most influential deejays of dance music - from disco to garage to house and beyond.
The mixes may not be as 100% beat perfect as you would get on a CD mixed by one of todays' deejays, but remember that this is a live set with the minor flaws adding to the authenticity and charm.

This is an astounding set, all the more impressive when you realise it was recorded in 1979 and a piece of history well worth owning.
Buy it now and play it loud!

5 out of 5 stars VINTAGE UNDERGROUND DISCO.......2003-02-28

Larry takes us through a time portal to one night in 1979 with disco mixing at NewYork's famous Paradise Garage. This is not a set of radio saturated disco songs, however a set that truly represents the great diversity of underground disco. Larry begins the rollercoaster ride with the classic feel good "bourgie bourgie". The twists and turns continue on disc 1 with other gems such as "At Midnight", "Right in the Socket", "Take Me Home" and "Get on the Funk Train". Disc 2 continues the ride with the almost impossible to find gem "Bad Mouthin". "Let Yourself Go", "Angel in my Pocket", "Smack Dab in the Middle" and "Trinadad" are also worthy inclusions. Larry really hands out a smorgasboard with this recording with its great variety unlike current dance music that endeavours to be monotonous with the least change as possible. Larry Levan, one of the worlds most prominent djs knew how to work the crowd and stir their emotions, its a pity today's djs can't do this [as well]. This 2 disc set also comes with a booklet that writes about the history of the club from beginning to its closure.

4 out of 5 stars paradise is the garage.......2003-02-23

i give this cd 4 stars simply for existing! as a paradise garage core member for years, my life was seriously diminished in quality when king st closed. larry was the finest dj ever - he knew how to mix without ever cutting out the break in each selection. he showcased the music, not his dj skills. my only criticism of the cd and all the backround info i read is that it seems watered down to me. the real story was this:
DANCING ROOM ONLY -too dark to see -too sweaty to be pretty- girls in high heels dont belong there- grinding your body against complete strangers of both genders is expected. It was a group orgy of dance-worship to the tribal music gods. are there any clubs anywhere in the usa even close to that these days? if so, save my life and email me the 411. i'm dying to be dancing.

4 out of 5 stars Hey Man, I like dancing to Disco!!.......2003-02-08

Being a fan of most styles of Dance Music, especially House dj'd by Sanchez/Morillo etc I decided to explore some of its roots and pick this one up. I wasn't expecting much since I never really liked Disco.

      I was pleasantly suprised.

This is one damn fine party album - very danceable.

It exposed me to a lot of lesser known disco tracks (theres no blame it on the boogie or freakout here). Yes theres cheese here (it is disco) but theres also some rockin dance tracks here. Its had many repeat plays in my cd player.

I wasn't there at the time, but this is Live at the Paradise Garage by Larry Levan, so I guess it has to be somewhat representative of the sound being played then.

Overall - If like me you want an intro into the disco sound being played in clubs at the time - then this cd is well worth getting - you won't be disappointed.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-01-14

I was a member of the Paradise Garage, when it had sawdust on the floor and you needed a "wrench" as a membership indicator. I had some of the best (clubbing) times in my life listening and pumping to Larry's destinctive style of jockeying. This CD and the 3 others I purchased by Larry Levan are disappointing. Larry was one the best jockey's of that era and these CD's do not do him justice. I hope you do better in the future, for the days at the Garage are cherished by all us who either were members or attended at least once. May Larry live forever. Timmy Regisford, Frankie Knuckles, James Vincent, and Larry Heard as well as a few others, continue holdin' it down....

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of that funky stuff !.......2005-10-03

When I first listened to this live tapes a couple of years ago, it just blew me away, the only thing I would like to know, why don't they bring out some more of this DJ mastermind (and please...let it be the 70's)

5 out of 5 stars larry levan lives!!!!!.......2004-04-24

As a former patron of the Garage I can honestly say that
Larry Levan and the Paradise Garage live on in this most
excellent collection of garage classics. I only wish someone would compile some of Larry's mixes from 80 to 83-84 which would
lay aside all doubt as to who is the best D.J of all times...

5 out of 5 stars Superb discomix, great dj.......2000-09-28

Larry Levan is nowadays acknowledged to be one of the great and more influential dj's of the 70's. This 2cd mix just ads to this. Although his beatmatching skills might be a little less than contemporary dj's, but today almost al beats match, which wasn't the case in his days. The electricity sparkles from the cd's. The only down point I can come up with, is the second cd only last less than 40 min.

5 out of 5 stars TIME MACHINE BACK TO 1979.......2000-09-23

First, I'd like to remark on the sheer clarity and technical excellance of the transfer to CD of the original tapes. Hats off to the Strut UK label. I can only pray that they can get their hands on more classic disco tapes (more Levan from the 1980s would be a start) and make them available to the public in the same way. Now on the vibe: Pure Disco Heaven from the beginning especially with the likes of Ashford & Simpson, T-Connection and Stephanie Mills starting out the set. If you like 70s style disco music, this is for you. As essential a testament of the early New York disco scene as David Mancuso's "The Loft" put out by another Brit label, Nuphonic.

      5 out of 5 stars a time capsule.......2000-08-09

the anticipation for this cd was so high,i was worried it would fall under everyone's expectations.but instead we get a glimpse of one night in 1979 that is pure magic.all the elements are here that are larry's trademarks-the ability to mix older tracks("funk train" and"erucu") with current tracks and newer unreleased gems(change's "angel in my pocket"-not out until the next year!)listen to the way he introduces a snippet or a whisper of a song, building up the anticipation of the listener.my only disappointment was when the last track fades out,i felt this immense sadness-i wanted it to keep going.i also worry when the next chance will come-look how long this took to be released.but for now,we have a historical document of one night in the greatest club and the best dj ever-and that is a good thing.
