Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Almost complete!.......2007-04-29
Well done to all involved in the release of this CD. My 25 years search for the mysterious and magical music of 'Lost in Space' has now been rewarded. Hundreds of letters sent by fans of this music over the years has paid off with a beautifully presented double CD package containing extensive liner notes about the music & composers involved. Great artwork from Mark Banning which we have come to expect and crystal clear remastering of the soundtrack elements. One piece of cue music remains elusive however. It was first heard during the episode 'The reluctant stowaway' and used extensively in the first season. The cue commences with the sound of a heartbeat coupled with trombones played in their lowest register. The 40th Anniversary liner notes state that some elements of 'The Reluctant Stowaway' soundtrack were lost, I guess this important cue was one of them? Possibly copies of the original soundtrack exist in other parts of the world. I live in Hope. Bernard Hermanns music does not appear in any of the Lost in Space releases. Could this be that copyright is held elsewhere? The Hermann music is very important. Music fans may not be aware that John Robinson's jet pack scene for example uses music from the 1953 film " beyond the 12 mile reef ". Other dark and sinister scenes from 'Lost in Space' use the Hermann music from the films "The day the earth stood still" 1951 and "Garden of Evil" 1954. Hopefully these 3 Bernard Hermann film soundtracks are still available to music fans who want to complete their 'Lost in Space' music collections.
Good for Collectors; Cheesy Packaging.......2007-04-13
If you want to time-trip to the LIS episodes via the music and the cues, here you go. LIS was prime escapist television from the bountiful fount of Irwin Allen, and like its stable mate, Voyage To The Bottom of The Sea, featured trite, geared-to-kiddies plots and low-budget special effects.
The packaging for such an expensive two disk "limited edition" is a shame. The flimsy swing-out jewel box fell apart in my hands as I openred it. I had to replace it with an old two-disk stacker type I had left over from old software.
Classic soundtracks of a great show.......2007-03-12
It's classic T.V. show with music is unforgetable soundtracks, any fan of the show must get it well worth the money, only 5000 made, so get it now......
Finally! The "missing" cues.......2006-07-25
A few years back, GNP Crescendo released three volumes of LOST IN SPACE music (still available if you search around on Amazon). All three volumes are wonderful -- but to fit the John Williams scores for episodes 1, 3 and 5 onto one CD, some cues were eliminated.
THIS newer set includes almost all of those missing cues -- including glorious tracks from "The Reluctant Stowaway," "Island in the Sky" and "The Hungry Sea" that weren't on the previous releases.
But wait, there's more: A multitude of cues from other episodes too -- not scored by Williams -- from seasons one and two, including the full-length "The Family" theme used in "Welcome Stranger" and a host of other episodes whenever there was a sentimental moment.
Want even more? The third-season music bumper (used halfway through each episode when coming back from a commercial) and the "CBS Presents This Program in Color" tracks also are here. Altogether it's more than two-and-a-half hours of music, on two CDs.
I was REALLY excited to get this. When combined with the previous releases, it's almost all of the music used on LOST IN SPACE for the entire three seasons. (And yes, the liner notes are extensive too.)
Thank you, La-Land Land Records, for releasing this!

Customer Reviews:
Jonatha Brooke's "I'll Try" is worth the purchase........2007-06-23
The soundtrack in total is better than most Disney Films...But the song "I'll Try" is a classic and the CD should be purchased to hear the singing and songwriting of Jonatha Brooke. Why this song did not get an Oscar nod, when songs of less substance do each year is perplexing. If you liked the film or did not even see it...the CD is worth the price. In addition Jonatha Brooke has many more CDs out of her music and one can instantly be hooked (no pun intended) at first listen...
Loved It! Loved It! Loved It!.......2006-02-25
When I saw the movie, I first saw it in the movie theater and then on Disney Channel. I heard the song "I'll Try" and immediatly wanted the soundtrack. I also wanted the movie. Jonatha Brooke's song made me want to fly. :) I personally never want to grow up and this movie and song help you stay childish and care-free longer. It trully is a beautiful song and a beautiful movie.
"I'll Try".......2005-02-17
The movie was okay, but the song "I'll Try" just made me want to see it again and again. It's so great!! I love it!!
Jonatha Brooke.......2003-06-19
Have to say I hated the movie, but when the song 'I'll Try' played, I immediately recognized the amazing talent of Jonatha Brooke. It is a beautiful song and if you enjoy it, I highly recommend you listen to her other stuff. She has several solo albums, all of which are good, but her best work (in my opinion)is the stuff she did as part of a Boston based duo called 'The Story'. Their album 'Grace in Gravity', is one of my all time favorites. The harmonies on the album are astounding and complex. Jonatha has a penchant for minor keys and her phrasing is unmistakeable. Superb stuff for the music enthusiast.
10 year old and loving it!!:).......2002-05-30
Personally I love Peter Pan things and that "I'll Try..."song made me cry when I saw it in the movie theater,And really all these songs are great...They make me feel like I never wanna grow up also...:)Those songs have that way that move you,Like make you sad....And man...I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!:)PETER PAN ALL THE WAY!Wahooo!:)

Pretty good.......2006-01-27
I came across Greyboy while finding music along the lines of Quantic. Greyboy is very impressive. Mixes jazz with dope lofi beats.
The future of acid jazz.......1999-12-14
Greyboy brings something that a lot of the "smooth" jazz artists don't: groove! No rap, no vocalists, just excellent beats & HAROLD TODD and KARL DENSON. If you enjoyed this like I did, check out GREYBOY ALLSTARS, GALACTIC, CORDUROY, SLIDE FIVE (Rhode Trip), and of course, GREYBOY (Freestylin'). This is definitely the future of acid jazz.
Great Funky Jazz With Hip-Hop Beats.......1999-02-06
This is just a tremendous album. Old school 70's-style accessible, funky jazz with tough, urban hip-hop beats. It doesn't sound old, but it doesn't sound so much new as it does different. You really don't need to like either jazz OR hip-hop to go for this.
Funky enough to put anyone's backfield in motion, while intelligent and musical enough to reward the mind as well. Some music is a matter of taste, but I cannot imagine humans hearing this CD & not liking it, unless they suffer from serious neurological deficits. Absolutely essential.

Sir Thomas Allen makes the point in a note with this delightful collection of 25 ballads that he rates it beside his many recordings of music heavyweights like Wagner and Verdi. There is no need to justify his enthusiasm, for it is clear from the outset that he treats the music with the sort of complete respect that has made him one of our most-loved singers. It is too easy to be dismissive of this repertoire, but when it is taken at its own value and sung and played with honesty, as it is here, the results are heartwarming. Allen recalls hearing the songs in the family home following the two world wars, "a time when there seemed a need for reassurance." Perhaps that time is with us again, and these performances strike a chord. There are many old friends here and perhaps some new discoveries. Who can resist the beautifully constructed "Love, could I only tell thee" or that old potboiler "The Lost Chord", especially when given with such warmth? A picture shows Allen and family in full vocal spate. At the piano is his father, to whose memory he dedicates the disc. --Keith Clarke

A Wonderful Preview.......2000-11-14
For those of you not familiar w/ Helicon, they are a Baltimore based trio that specializes in spreading the joy and beauty of international music. The group consists of Chris Norman, a world renown wooden flute player (he does classical music as well), Ken Kolodner, an incredible hammer dulcimerist and fiddler who also happens to have a P.h.d, and Robin Bullock, a magnificent guitarist, citernist, and fiddler, who actually started out in rock music. Anyway, the group has since begun to explore other interests so they no longer tour together, but that doesnt mean that their music is dead. In fact, it is alive and well on this recording. Track 1 is played by Norman on a type of double barreled flute that makes it sound like 2 flutes are playing, creating a truly unique sound. The second half of track 1 has a much simpler beat, but is still just as pleasing to the ear. Track 2 is a pair of beautiful Peruvian pieces that begin w/ a simple hammer dulcimer rhythm, but eventually adds in complexity, until the texture is truly South American. Next, they move to Sweden, a country rich in its fiddling, and perform two polskas. Although this CD does these pieces justice, the way they perform them is even better (they move their bodies to accent the dynamic changes in a sort of call and respond manner). Track 5 finally gets to some of the traditional Irish and American reels that have begun to find its place in mainstream America nowadays. They certainly do celtic music justice. Next, "Mr. Pantaleish" is perhaps the most mysterious piece on this recording, and it is truly haunting. Track 7 returns to America, where they play an old American fiddle tune, and a tune that they learned from Freyda Epstein, a brilliant musician from Virginia. All in all, this is a great recording, and is only a preview of what this incredible trio would accomplish in the coming years that they toured together. You will notice that this recording almost sounds like there is a concert in your room, because the music is pure. There is only limited audio enhancing machines used which makes the music all that much better. I highly encourage anyone to buy this CD, and to also check out Helicon's recordings, as well as the member's solo efforts. You will never tire of this stuff.

surprisingly delightful and rich.......2001-07-12
I wasnt quite sure what to expect from this CD. However, upon first listening to it I fell under its spell. The performers supreme command of both voice and instruments are intoxicating. Every aspect of this cd is wonderful. It is rich, deeply colored, and beautifull rendered.I wish I had more of a musicologists' language to impart the stunning quality of this incredibly inexpensive cd. Instead I will have to use terms such as Pellucid, sonorous, rich, haunting, lovely, I am sure you get the picture just dont miss getting the CD

The composers Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu might not be the names that first spring to mind when love songs are mentioned, yet this fascinating collection gives us a taste of what delights we have been missing. They range from seven Moravian folk songs, collected by Janácek at the turn of the century, to songs written by Martinu in the U.S. in 1942. There's also early Martinu--including songs he collected in Slovakia in 1920--plus the world-premiere recording of Songs for a Friend of My Country, a cycle he wrote in France in 1940 on his way to America. All of these songs are of interest in giving us another aspect of each composer's work; most have much more to offer. Many are achingly lovely, especially those by Dvorák--including his Op. 2, a reworking of four songs from a cycle he had written almost 20 years earlier, and Love Songs, a revision of eight songs from the same cycle. "Good night, my darling," from his 1886 cycle In Folk Tone, is worth the price of this CD alone. Czech mezzo Magdalena Kozená, who put together the program, sings with pure, attractive tone. Graham Johnson is her excellent accompanist. --Richard Fawkes
Customer Reviews:
On the Subject of Intelligent and Sensitive Recitals.......2005-05-19
Combing the recorded literature to find CDs that showcase singers who not only own brilliant vocal gifts but who also possess the intelligence to program recordings of lesser known works in a sequence that makes for intelligent recitals, it is becoming more obvious that there are many singers who opt for purity of purpose rather than 'salesmanship' of careers in the PR arena. Magdalena Kozená is one of these gifted singers whose intelligence and sensitivity match her physical and vocal beauty.
LOVE SONGS is a tastefully selected panorama of lesser-known songs by Kozená's fellow countrymen (Czech) Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu. And while many of the Dvorák and Janácek songs have been occasionally heard in recitals, the Martinu "Songs for a Friend of My Country", an exquisitely beautiful work written in 1940, here receives its World Premiere recording. Kozená's voice is in prime condition for these songs and she is ably accompanied by pianist Graham Johnson. The special flavor of these Slavic emotions and songs has rarely been so well captured.
But over and above the beauty of Kozená's performance of these neglected masterpieces shines the glow of her sensitive programming. Recordings such as these are rare and should be included in the libraries of those who appreciate the lieder genre. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05
Lovely.......2004-03-25
This is a beautifully performed selection of Czech lieder. Kozena has a lovely voice and sings with precision and nicely modulated emotion. The accompanying pianist, Graham Johnston, is excellent. Despite the title, not all these songs are love or romantic songs but all are well worth hearing. The selection of songs is excellent. Different listeners will prefer different songs. For me, the highlight of this recording are the rarely heard Martinu songs, many of which exhibit the lyrical aspect of his compositional style. Recommended strongly.
A Beautiful Disc.......2002-01-06
This is simply a magnificent recording. I like it better every time I put it on. The voice is fresh, supple, and expressive. I even find myself trying to learn some of the Czech words (from the translation in the booklet) they sound so nice. Both Kozena and the brilliant piano contributions by Graham Johnson are faithfully caught on the recording. There is enough variety and contrast that one doesn't tire in the least (over the generous 67 minutes of playing time) of hearing these playful, sometimes poignant, songs. One of the best discs, in terms of programming, performance, and sound quality, of the past couple of years.
A stunning burst onto the world stage.......2001-12-17
Magdalena Kozena is suddenly known around the world, thanks to this stunning disc of 42 lieder from her Czech homeland. Most of the songs are short - some come in under a minute, the longest 3-4 minutes. Each is a little gem and many have never been recorded before.
Kozena's voice is sheer delight. She does have resonances in her voice which are reminiscent of her compatriot, Lucia Popp, but is certainly a mezzo - although she has chosen her repertoire well so we hear no strain at the top. Her low resonances are delightful and consistent with her head voice. To compare Kozena's voice to that of the late diva (Popp), it is more pure, more consistent in tone from top to bottom, and doesn't have so much of the `squeezey' quality which Popp used to great effect in evincing the passion of her characters. Kozena can empty her voice of vibrato or let it out rich and full, and uses all her vocal resources to great effect in contrasting the individual songs. She has astoundingly mature lieder-singer's technique for such a young singer.
This recording rightly won a Gramophone award this year. Kozena deserves all the accolades she receives for this - doubtless all listeners will develop their own favourites from these delightful miniatures.
Wonderful songs, and a singer with great potential.......2000-10-08
What a wonderful, carefully thought out CD! Kozena obviously revels in these rarely performed songs by Dvorak, Martinu, and Janacek, and Johnson accompanies with his usual ease and sensitivity. What a pity the piano is balanced distantly -- we hear little of Johnson's variety of touch and dynamics. As for Kozena, she is obviously an intelligent musician with a voice of great potential. It is qutie beautiful as it is, yet the colour is still rather pale. Yes, there is something of the late Lucia Popp's timbre, yet it has little of Popp's depth and range of colour. BBC Legends released a CD of Popp a year ago which includes three Dvorak songs also sung by Kozena. The differences are quite marked -- while Kozena's timbre and interpretation suggests a dreamy yet earnest youth, Popp brings out an autumnal glow and a sharp pain that pierces at least this listener's heart. Kozena has started a wonderful career. Only time will tell how her voice will develop. I do hope it goes in the direction of Popp's unique lyric timbre. No one could ever equal Popp (perhaps it's obvious by now that Popp is my favorite singer of all time), but perhaps Kozena will become something of Popp's heir, while still being her own person. I hope so. But her musicality is not in question. Let's keep our ears open!
