4 out of 5 stars Paul Davis ~ Sweet Life - His Greatest Hit Singles.......2007-06-02

Sweet Life, '65 Love Affair were simply outstanding songs, I give them 5+ stars. This man definitely had talent and put out some good music in the 80's. Overall, four stars for this collection!

5 out of 5 stars Cool Songs!.......2007-02-14

Hi...I bought this CD for my favorite song of all time...Cool Night. I've only heard this song once or twice on the radio in my lifetime...What a damn shame its one of the best songs ever & because Paul Davis is an outstanding singer who seems to have been forgotten (except for the few of us who really appreciate good music).

I also loved I go Crazy which I'm very familiar with & is my second most favorite song of his.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Davis; Sweet Life: This CD Is Fantastic!.......2006-10-26

Ya know......Some three years ago or so; I decided to start using the internet (namely Amazon) to find and purchase old music I had previously owned and I not only have been doing that but I have also been finding and purchasing some old music that I unfortunately missed the first time around and one of those artists is Paul Davis. What is so neat though is that it was like I had owned this CD all along because I remember every song. These songs are 70s and 80s memories at their very best. This guy is a class act. From the first track to his duet with Marie Osmond (which is the last track); this Disc is definitely Sweet. His covers of the Beach Boys classic, Darlin, (featuring Susan Collins) and, Love Or Let Me Be Lonely, are excellent. The Friends Of Distinction version of, Love Or Let Me Be Lonely, which charted some twelve to thirteen years earlier (around 69-70) is even better; but barely. What songs are my favorites on this CD?.....Ah Man.....That would have to go to, Cool Night, I Go Crazy, and Sweet Life. Thanks Amazon. I highly recommend this Disc. My opinion of it is.....Wow!.....Bom! Bom! Bom! Bom!.....LOL!
Final Note: Once you hear, Love Or Let Me Be Lonely, you will know where the Bom! Bom! Bom! Bom! Comes from. .....LOL Again!.....Great Tune and this CD is a Winner.

3 out of 5 stars Paul Davis.......2006-08-24

I didn't realize so much of it was country. Get past his hits and it was minly C&W.

5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2006-07-23

I myself like all the songs on this CD. I think they sound as ggod as they did on my vinyl records. Ride 'Em Cowboy brings back a lot of memories. Cool Nights is a very good mellow song that reminds me of a late June evening under the stars with the one you love. Love Or let Me Be Lonely and '65 Love Affair are my favotite songs of Paul Davis. Sweet Life also brings back a lot of good memories.
A very good CD for all music lovers.
If you do not like the music here then please do not waste your time writing bad things about Paul Davis and his music, PLEASE!!!

4 out of 5 stars Theme to movie "Ordinary People".......2007-07-07

I have beeen searching for this music and this CD comes closest to my memories of the haunting theme to that movie

4 out of 5 stars great melody.......2007-07-05

I thought that I would get tired of hearing the same song over and over but this cd keeps me listrning it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Canon in D is Great! .......2007-05-26

We have truely enjoyed Pachelbel's Greatest Hit. Although often associated with weddings this is wonderful to hear anytime. I would highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good thing x 8.......2006-10-28

If you'd told me that I could listen to eight consecutive versions of the same music, I would have been maybe just a tad skeptical. Yet, I just did exactly that and I am now a believer. I gave it four stars because although I do like Cleo Laine, I feel that her vocal version here is sort of like, "which one doesn't belong?" from this set, Galway's excellent flute accompaniment notwithstanding. If you find the Canon in D compelling, then by all means consider this CD.

5 out of 5 stars My very favorite music CD ever.......2006-05-02

My husband and I used to listen to this every night before sleep. After he passed away, it was years before I could listen to it without crying my eyes out. I know that the original has no lyrics, as one poster mentioned, but I absolutely love that one. "When will we ever touch again"... speaks to my very soul. I am here buying it again because I wore out the first copy. You can't go wrong with this CD...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This will make a classical listener out of a hillbillie.......2007-06-02

I sort of think of myself as a Viginia Hillbillie... educated however. I am not into classical music either. There is, however, something about Pachelbel's Canon that does something miraculous to my mind. The music is beautiful... very very beautiful. I put the CD in my car, roll the windows up and turn up the sound and listen to it end-to-end over and over again. It is so soothing... causing a rush of seratonin in your brain making the world seeming all part of your euphoria.

Even if you aren't into classical... buy this one and you will impress your friends with your new found sophistication... and you won't have to fake it either!!!

5 out of 5 stars Repetitivley Wonderful.......2007-05-08

I was in an art gallery when I heard this playing in the background, I asked the sales associate what this was and she told me. I especially love number 4 "Cannon of the three Stars" by "The Plasma Symphony Orchestra". The new age sound was very lovely. You will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Best versions of The Canon!.......2007-03-28

This cd contains every version of Pachelbel's Canon that you can imagine from a piece like this. Each version proves that the song sounds incredible no matter which instrument(s) it is played with.
A DEFINITE MUST-HAVE for anyone that likes this song! (Perfect for the wedding also!)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-12-20

What a great CD. I can't even put into words how relaxing it is to listen to this after a long day. Just sort of puts you at ease with the world in a time when serenity is so often torn from our hands.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding compilation!.......2005-07-27

I truly find this compilation of fifteen different arrangements consisting of piano, orchestra, flute, guitar, vocal, etc. to be of absolute profound quality. This is a brilliant and creative assortment and it magnifies my appreciation for the Cannon in D. The listener is provided with over an hour of exquisite, listening pleasure and it is most enjoyable. I have much admiration for the various symphonic orchestras and I also enjoy listening to the flute played by James Galway on track two, the piano duo on track three, and the shakuhachi and koto quintet on track eight. My only suggestion is that the appearance of the Cd should reflect the professional quality of the music contained therein. The animal drawings just may not appeal to some buyers.

if you want Original Grooves, Melodys&Arrangements then Isaac Hayes brought it. if you needed a Cover of a Song that got either Funked up or got smoothed out then Brother Ike aka Black Moses Brought it. He covered a wide range of styles&themes as a Writer, Arranger, producer&Instrumentalist. this is a tight collection.

Great music from times gone by ... but the songs will live on

5 out of 5 stars lady-killer voice, groovin'.......1998-05-14

These songs are very slow and slick and sultry. A scratchy electric guitar whines softly over a steady, sexy bass while Isaac's voice, a TOWER of sex, swoons in and out of the music. They are love songs, and they are all carnal and luscious. Since this dude's now THE CHEF on the most popular cartoon, South Park, I'm sure you'll want to acquainted with the man's music. It's just what you expected. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars perhaps Scott Saul could remove the stick from his ..........2007-07-09

Well, you get the idea.

You're right, SS. It's drug humor. It's silly and childish.

It's still funny for all of us old farts. But I know a lot of kids (folks in their 20's) who think that "That 70's Show" is hilarious, and that Tommy Chong is also hilarious.

So, maybe you're just opinionated. Truth in the quality of entertainment ... is... well, it's subjective, dude. There are no facts there. Only opinions.

And frankly, you just don't get it.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it was.......2007-04-05

I bought this album because I wanted the earache my eye skit. How surprised I was to find that this selection is only the song the kid was playing, and has none of the actual skit in it! BOO! I would rate this CD a zero if there was such a rating. If you are looking for the real deal for earache my eye, try the Wedding Album.

5 out of 5 stars Dave's Not Here!.......2007-01-15

I bought this CD for my brother for Christmas and he loves it. It brought back lots of great memories from "back in the day". :0) I'm going to get myself a copy, too.

2 out of 5 stars it is not that funny.......2006-09-28

Some comedy is so clever and energetic that it can withstand the test of time. Unfortunately, Cheech and Chong is too attached to the 1970's counter culture and has no relevance to what qualifies as humor today.

There are no punchlines, no set ups, no funny observations, no clever parodies, just 2 burnouts going around acting stupid.

When I was a kid this stuff was hilarious. "Smells like dogsh__", "Class...shuddup" and "Ear ache my eye, how would you like a buttache?" were all real funny to a 9 year old. Any cuss word on record was funny. It's not that funny anymore

I bought this cd and it is bad. It utilizes too short of exerpts from the albums. After the first listen, when I got over the nostalgic rush of it, I really could not listen to it any more.

This material does not have the power of an old Bill Cosby, Richard Prior, Geroge Carlin or even a Mel Brooks album.

Cheech and Chong will always have a place in my heart, their first movie will always be a guilty pleasure for me but their recorded material does not have the creativity of a comedic work that is enduring.

I cannot imagine that anybody born post 1975 would enjoy this.

Sorry Cheech and Chong fans, I got to tell it the way it is!

4 out of 5 stars I just HAD to get this..........2006-03-24

...and even though I will only listen to it once or twice, it is just as funny now as it was back in my long haired days.

The technical quality of the CD is very good, MUCH better than my old 8-track or LP of this recording. Sister Mary Elephant shouting a distorted "SHUT-UUUUP!!!! Thank you." never sounded so good.

This is a great CD for bringing back memories of the good old dazed.. uh, I mean days.

"Dave?"

I said "days".

"Dave's not here."

1 out of 5 stars Just say NO to this album.......2007-04-18

This album is utter trash. It is poorly mixed and is simply a rehash of all RBF's old songs. If you're really an RBF fan, you'll either have all their previously released albums already or you'll buy "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album" which was released by the band after ditching their Jive label. This record is a last ditch effort on part of Jive to make one last bit of profit off one of the world's greatest ska bands. Don't feed the suits! Feed Reel Big Fish and buy "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album" instead.

1 out of 5 stars Reel Big Fish Rocks.......2006-12-25

Reel Big Fish rocks, but "Our Live Album IS Better Than Your Live Album" is the best greatest hits you WILL ever get because live RBF is more talkitive, more funny in that way, and it makes their live stuff better, just the raw sound of ska music as well, it's called life, love it.

1 out of 5 stars Jive does horrible job with this one! Not band's fault..........2006-12-23

Unfortunately Jive Records managed to show everyone the true stupidity that is behind every major label. Was it greed? Yes.

This album's quality is not anything to be obsessed over when compared to "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album" which the band released themselves. If you like Reel Big Fish then let their own album released on their own impress you, not something that Jive Records has beaten to death out of corporate greed.

This CD is exactly what I was looking for. Bolero over and over with different performers.

4 out of 5 stars Loads of fun.......2004-07-09

This is a fun little album consisting of ten versions of Ravel's greatest "hit" -- the fantastic "Bolero." This album covers the waterfront -- from synthesizer to Benny Goodman. My only complaint is that the quality of some of older recordings in particular is rather poor. In fact you need to crank up the volume on two or three cuts, otherwise you won't even realize the song has begun. It would be interesting to apply this concept to any number of the great classical and popular pieces that one can't seem to get enough of -- how about Cole Porter's "Night and Day" for starters?

2 out of 5 stars Active or Passive Voice?.......2006-11-29

Part One: It must have been the wax.
------------------------------------
While it is essential for any artist to interpret the work of another before them, a regard for the original author must remain intact. This is an ambitious recording, however, we are rarely judged by our intent and far more often by our act. All too often in this recording we are listening to the artist playing an author's work rather than the author's work being played by an artist. Hubris abounds in this recording, from its conception to its release, and unfortunately suffers an all too predictable fate.

Part Two: I can see the numbers.
-------------------------------
However, even more disenchanting than the usurping of a masterwork is the lack of inspired performances, as if each is so out of context that within the confines of these "snippets" the artist never engages leaving the listener equally disengaged, akin to a polished paint-by-numbers canvas executed in water color by a haphazard collection of period icons. If this was the very first recording of this sterling composition, it may well have been the very last.

5 out of 5 stars Four Seasons a Winner.......2005-07-21

This is the second copy of Vivaldi's Greatest Hit I have purchased. I liked it so much, I decided to buy another copy to give my 15-yr-old nephew, who is a violinist and lover of classical music. He loves it, too, so two thumbs up from this reviewer.

5 out of 5 stars A New Twist for an Old Favorite!.......2004-05-28

I own two other renderings of "The Four Seasons" in addition to this one, and this disc is my favorite. Vivaldi intended for "The Four Seasons" to be a multimedia experience, incorporating music, image, and poetry. This collection truly captures that spirit of versatility by arranging the work for several different instruments (not just guitar, as the previous review would have you believe). In addition, the movements rendered with soloist Gottfried von der Goltz on the Baroque violin sound almost completely different from any previous recordings. His style is hard, almost violent, while his instrument sounds much darker and richer than a modern violin. It adds a depth to "The Four Seasons" lacking in many new studio recordings. The third movement from "Summer" in particular is stunning, with von der Goltz transforming it from a mere succession of rushing 16th notes into an exuberant, virtuosic portrait of a prairie thunderstorm. The guitar, flute, and electronic arrangements (only one electronic arrangement, however) are excellent, retaining the true spirit of the original while managing to add something new. The disc contains the entire cycle of the seasons twice, with various different instrumentations playing each movement. Lovers of "The Four Seasons," Baroque music, or classical music in general will find MUCH to appreciate here!

3 out of 5 stars Not as much fun as it could be given the premise.......2003-04-16

This isn't a bad album. It's a perfectly nice run-through of Four Seasons, twice. But the premise is that there are many different performers in many different styles, and the actuality comes out less varied than one would hope.

The performers are certainly all-stars, and there's nothing wrong with any of the performances. It's just that, they're, well, the same performances those all-stars could give any time. There are no new interpretations of the work. There are very few adaptations to unusual instruments - except for the movements done mainly on guitar, everything else is essentially the basic original orchestration, with different soloists filling in instead of the violin - Michaela Petri on recorder, James Galway on flute, etc.

And I didn't feel that the choice of which soloists did which movements was as inspired as it could have been. In several movements, the soloists hardly came across as soloists at all. The order in which the performers appeared, appeared to have been chosen at random. That is, every movement was played in order, with some randomly chosen set of artists doing it. Then, the (nearly) whole thing was played again, this time with the artists chosen randomly a different way, so that Michaela Petri was doing a different movement from the first time through.

Many casual listeners to classical music aren't aware that each "Season" is actually made up of three sections. The recording switches performers with every section. I personally think this would have been more effective if one set of performers had done all three sections of a season, long enough for the listener to really get a feel for their sound, then switched to another performer only with the change of seasons. With 8 seasons to go through (four times two), that still would have allowed for plenty of variety, and left one much more able to appreciate that variety.

If you don't already have a recording of "The Four Seasons" then this one isn't bad at all - go ahead and buy it. But if you already have several recordings, you won't be adding anything unusual or radically different to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Once I Thought I Found Her, Built My World Around Her..........2007-04-30

The song the "reeled" me into this group was, Like To Get To Know You. I first remember hearing this song at age eight and even then I liked it for its dreamy, almost surrealistic qualities. It is definetely a classic that rarely gets played on the radio. In fact, I think that this group was kind of cheated out of a lot of air play. Maybe radio stations thought they sounded too much like the Mamas and the Poppas, but to me, they had a sound all their own. It was poppy...but not too poppy. It was folksy but not too folksy. To me, this band knew how to be true to themselves and not copy or try and imitate anyone else who was out at the same time.

I like the whole album, but I always press repeat when it comes to Like To Get To Know You. I don't know what it is about that song, but it's beautiful, it's haunting, it makes my heart feel heavy and yet it lifts my spirit. Maybe that's what it was intended to do. I don't know. But I have to stop whatever it is I'm doing when it's playing and I just let soak into my unconscious allowing whatever images may come up to come up. It's a trippy, gorgeous, wonderful song and if you bought the CD for this one song it would be worth it.

Okay, cats...I gotta go.
Take things lightly.

Peace & Blessings.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Have It!.......2003-10-29

I fell in love with Spanky back in 9th grade. They were (and are) my favorite group from that era.

I didn't know until I bought the album (I own it on vinyl and CD that my favorite tune, "I'd Like To Get To Know You" was actually longer than the part they always played on the radio!

The CD is one hit after another, each evoking fond memories of a time gone by.

5 out of 5 stars It came out when I was 40, now I'm 70 still love it........1999-09-28

Very musical, good variety of sound and tempo

4 out of 5 stars we need more.......1999-06-24

A really good collection.Only thing wrong is why did they seperate the songs And She's Mine and Yesterday's Rain? They flow in together like one song like on the original lp titled Anything You Choose b/w Yesterdays' Rain? And they should re-release all the S&OG catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Brilliant, Can't recommend it highly enough.......1999-04-21

Well, I'm only 25, so I wasn't even born when these songs were recorded, but this really is an incredible collection. There isn't really a bad song on it. I prefer S&OG to the Mamas and Papas (great though they are) because the songs they perform are better. I love the vocal harmonies, the strings, and the use of different guitar sounds (eg bossa nova style on 'bird avenue'). Basically, this is brilliant, a revelation.
