If you don't know Phil Asher this C.D is a great place to start.The opening track Freaky which he mixes into the second track and vice versa is a great opening which segues into other Blaze and Mood to Swing delights.By my reckoning this is his best work and that includes the stuff for Nervous as well as the Gilles Petersonish Jazz compilations.This guy doesn't need a bandwagon, his absolute conviction to what he thinks is good puts at the top of the game,up there with Marques Wyatt or Joe Claussell.The classic Mood to Swing track Do it your way is gold that I never tire of hearing.House me all night long Phil.

I think Blaze is an important part of my life right now...their soul music has introduced in my heart and their funky and jazzy beats comforts my days actually, this kind of organic house music is too great for my taste. Let me hear! i admire this guys!

Blaze's new joint 'Spiritually Speaking' has finally arrived after all its initial hyping at this year's Miami Dance Music Conference. I am happy to report it fulfills its promise. 13 tracks of blissed-out soul and house music provide a listening experience that takes you from the dance floor to the living room. Their fourth full player is arguably their best and most cohesive. This time around the Earth Wind and Fire vibe is all throughout the cd. In fact it is perhaps the best EWF cd since "Spirit"! From the opening track "Melodies of Love" -- the familiar "bodi-bad-dah de yeyoo" chorus patented by EWF lets the listener know that "Spritually Speaking" is as much an homage to this archetypical group as it is a current plea towards universal love and acceptance. Josh Milan and Kevin Hodges craft simple and effective songs that are awashed in gorgeous melodies, memorable hooks and classic dance rythms that will be sure to endure beyond current trends. Highlights include the optimistic/mystical "Breathe" reportedly featuring EWF's Philip Bailey (but i can't really hear it!); Gloria's Muse is a gorgeous, evolving piano-led jazz dance track; guest vocalist Amira sings so soulfully on "When I think of you' and Black Bird flying Free (1&2) are of epic proportions. My current favorite track is "World Peace' -- a seriously soulful high point in the Blaze cannon. Overall the key words to describe the cd are soulful, masterful and positive. Highly recommmended - particularly for those in need of hope and affirmation. Job well done.

Terrific UnMixed Cuts !.......2005-07-30

This is a pretty slammin' little compilation of house jams as compiled by, as usual, Phil Asher aka Restless Soul. The series spans 14 volumes that I'm aware of and is usually pretty solid in giving you a good mix of house, nu-jazz and soul.

The CD starts out with an almost discoteque(sp?) like cut with Graceland feat Lauren David in "Call Me". The song has a whip to it that's pretty basic, but I wonder what some of the remixes are like. House guru Jon Cutler follows up with a good steady beat on "Runnin'" before Vivian Greene pipes in with a slow and sensual R&B cut that's almost like a late night ballad with a slow finger snap - thanks to Osunlade. But one of the highlights to this album to me was the Sterling Ensemble track, "The World", given a remix by EOL; think Masters at Work, all the way. Amazing song that'll hook you within the first 14 seconds with a great vibe, occasional broken beat and a breathtaking change of pace midway through the cut. To find this on 12"! Another highlight to me was Diviniti's "Find A Way" given a steady remix by Danny Krivit. Great vocal, loads of good points... just a sweet house track. And then there's Bah Samba's rendition of the classic Teena Marie track "Portuguese Love", given a KICKIN' remix by Restless Soul (Phil Asher). Stellar work!

I can't mention them all, but there are more cuts on here that I certainly enjoyed... like Blaze, Bah Samba and MAW so I DEFINITELY recommend this to the house fan that likes nu-jazz mixed in. But it wasn't totally without fault; the Diviniti track is the shortest one on the 12", which definitely hurts because it cuts out before the harmonized break-down really ends. And I'm just not a fan of Studio Apartment's "Flight"... the male vocal that comes in on occasion just, I dunno, creeps me out. Finally, the price of this here is a bit steep for an 11 track single disc with shortened songs, even though it's an import. But if you do get this and love it, check out some of the others in this series along with "Club Jazz a la Mode" & Rainer Truby's "Abstract Jazz Theory".
