Customer Reviews:
Controversial second effort from the Pure Funk series.......2004-10-12
The second and more controversial disc in the Pure Funk series, Pure Funk Vol. 2 contains many Funk band and Funk artist's slightly lesser known hits plus a few from groups not immediately recognizable as masters of Funk. The songs are a bit slower in tempo and might be a better album to play at the end of the night when the party is winding down -- not when you want to crank things up.
There are a few highlights, however. One can't help but recall the local boys feeble attempts at stripping in the movie "The Full Monty" whenever Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing" begins. While Queen certainly wasn't a Funk band by anyone's stretch of imagination, they did write one excellent, kickin' base line for "Another One Bites The Dust" that's instantly recognizable anywhere and would make any Funk band proud to call their own! Stomp twice on the bleachers and clap! Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" is always a crowd pleaser and Barry White proves once again in "I'm gonna Love You Just a Little More" that the deep voice gets the girl.
For those not of the `Keep on Truckin'' generation, you'll discover the origin of many samples from your favorite songs (you mean they didn't write that rif themselves?!?!) plus you'll discover what song the Spice Girls ripped off for their album Spice World. Hint: She's a Bad Mama Jama . . . . Just don't tell anyone you think all of this stuff is funk, because it's not. That doesn't mean you won't enjoy the album as much as I did, just know that the first Pure Funk album is a better `Funk primer.'
Like the first Pure Funk album, not everything is from the 70's funk era -- half of the songs in fact. "Let It Whip" by Dazz Band, "Ain't Nobody" from Rufus & Chaka Khan, D Train's "You're The One For Me," The Gap Band's "Outstanding" were all early to mid 80's hits. "Get Down On It" by Kool & The Gang, The Whispers "It's a Love Thing," Rick James' "Give it to Me Baby," Carl Carlton's "She's a Bad Mama Jama," and Junior's "Mama Used to Say" were all released in the year 1981.
Twenty songs for ten bucks -- that's 50 cents a song. If you delete the songs on the album you don't consider "Funk," you're only out a few bucks. Buy this album only after you get the first album first.
I know what I like.......2002-03-20
A lot of the other reviewers have blasted this CD because it is not a true funk compilation. Well, maybe so. I don't know. I'm not a connoisseur of the art form. All I know is that I enjoyed the hell out of these songs (with the exception of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," which I could happily live the rest of my life without hearing again). I was exclusively into metal when these songs came around the first time, so it's a pleasure to be exposed to so many great pop songs that I was only dimly aware of, if I had heard them at all.
Soft and commercial.......2001-12-21
Seems like they sold too many of the first volume, and have produced a second just to try to rake in a little more. Hardly any of the tracks on this album are funk, and as for Queen being the opener... it speaks for itself. To me, funk is typified by an active bass line, compelling beat and sharp guitar or brass; any or all of these are lacking on most of the tracks here. What you get instead is a collection of slothful, disparate songs, hardly conducive to dancing. Save your money.
Not FUNK!!!.......2001-11-28
This is, in no way, shape or form, funk!!! I mean, how the hell is "Another One Bites The Dust" funk?! My God!!! This is sure as hell not "Pure Funk", this is soft, white funk!!! (...)
pure non funk 2.......2001-10-10
funk is that kinda vibe you eat hotwings and groove at fish fries funk is when you come out of church's chicken jamming, sorry but half this cd is not funk, d train is bubblegum pop, gap band outstanding is not funky enough, but hits, why is queen on here they was not a funk group, the whispers no way hose, carl carlton's she's a bad mama jama is not a funk classic, i always said these funk compilations does the artists injustice, if you wanna learn what funk is check out the original recordings well i'll list a few, the entire catalog, and entourage of james brown, parliament-funkadelic, sly stone, larry graham, bootsy collins, barkays, ohio players, chaka khan and rufus, cameo, curtis mayfield, mandrill, earth, wind fire, war, the list is endless.

For listeners with a sincere interest in the broad variety of music loosely aligned under the New Age banner, Pure Moods II will strike your ears as something less than a high-concept showcase for the genre and more as a mulligan stew of easy-listening favorites. This is not necessarily a bad thing; yet a recording marketed to the general public as a comprehensive, current, state-of-the-art overview of atmospheric music shouldn't include such ill-fitting oddities as George Benson's "Breezin'," a lite-funk relic from 1976, or "Emily" from jazz saxophonist Dave Koz. Happily, the 77-minute, 16-track sampler offers far more items of interest than irritation. It reaches back to 1983 to remind us of an ahead-of-its-time display of Celtic mysticism from Clannad ("Theme from Harry's Game"), and it both opens and closes with superb selections from one of the genre's most admired artists, Loreena McKennitt--very appropriate since, one could argue, discussions on the future of New Age should both begin and end with McKennitt's name. Despite its few warts, Pure Moods II is a good listen overall. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
No where near as good as the first.......2007-06-14
I loved the first CD, so got the 2nd one. Quite dissapointed. I thought a handful of the songs on 2 were good, such as Firefly, but overall it just seems like they threw together a bunch of songs to sell a copy of a popular CD.
Another Editorial Review.......2006-11-06
"Pure Moods was such an unexpected success that it launched a number of spinoffs and, eventually (and perhaps somewhat inevitably), Pure Moods II. Although it isn't quite as consistent as its predecessor -- George Benson's 'Breezin`' feels out of place among among these atmospheric cuts, but not nearly as much as Massive Attack's menacing 'Teardrop' -- but fans of the first will still find it to quite enjoyable, especially since it features Vangelis' 'Chariots of Fire,' Loreena McKennitt's 'Mummer's Dance' and Dream Academy's 'Life in a Northern Town,' three major oversights from the first Pure Moods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide"
Stunning and extraordinary compilation, a must have!.......2006-09-11
What a marvelous collection of mesmerizing music this is. I have been listening to this album all week, as I can't get it out of my head. Pure Moods are one my favorite collections as they bring awareness of similar music that goes together so well. The beauty of this album is the mix of music that evokes a certain mood, while not sounding all too similar.
Starting off with Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummers Dance" a hypnotic song from the first note that sounds like time travel from ancient Byzantium to the mystic Celtic seas followed by Montezuma, one of my favorite Cusco pieces. Cusco is a duet of two German keyboard players Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze who make their enigmatic music sound very original and South American. The music is not traditional; it's a mix of outer space, new age and pan flutes. Very interesting and incredibly likable.
"Nightingale" by Yanni is just incredible, every time I have it on I almost forget I am listening to music, I simply feel it and I am always amazed at how gorgeous it sounds and whenever I hear this song it feel like the first time I am hearing it as it stuns me.
Another favorite of mine, Adiemus makes an appearance, the interesting figment is that
the language is made up by Karl Jenkins, the sounds are not meant to distract the listener from the music. It is a mix of classical and world music with great freedom of movement and is the kind of music they use in breathtaking movie soundtracks.
Delerium's "Euphoria" almost sounds like a Madonna song, is lovely and spirited with a breath of enigma. There is also "The Weather Storm" by Craig Armstrong, another strong musical piece that does sound like an actual storm of music.
"Teardrop" by Massive Attack sounds like song everything knows they heard somewhere but they don't know what it is. My favorite part is the base beat, it sounds like the human heart.
The rest of the performers from Lovely and church like Clannad which make me feel like I am in an ancient monastery listening to the monks, to "Chariots of Fire" a classic from Vangelis to wonderful and earthy "Breezing" that sounds like the first day of spring to Enigma, to me the empress of New Age. This collection is stellar and each song is a 5 star to me.
This cd makes me happy; it's relaxing, lovely, and addictive and provides great inspiration when I need it to concentrate while I work on my art. Each song has been carefully hand picked to hit the listener with a magnitude of emotion and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who needs to sit back and be transported. The songs feel like caresses of ancient wind on the face and make me feel like I have been meditating for hours. Pure Moods is an excellent cd to pick up by someone who needs an introduction to new Age and relaxing music. So far this has been my favorite disc, but they are all lovely.
- Kasia S.
AWESOME!.......2006-09-06
If you are looking for meditation or tranquility from daily stress I recommend not only this CD, but the entire collection. I have all the Pure Moods collection and keep buying more New Age music. I feel I've invested my money in good music. I listen to pretty much anything from soft music, Rock, Salsa, Calypso to Dance-Techno music, but when I don't feel like listening to loud music, I listen to these CD collection, specially on a Sunday to reconnect with relaxation to start another heavy woking week. Also, if you like gospel, I'm sure you'll love these even though is not quite gospel music. You just reconnect yourself spiritually in this material world.
Wonderful.......2006-05-31
I bought this based on the cover, I was at a flea market and loved the purple and intersting artwork. Now I have lost the cover but know where the cd is at all times, only 4 songs are songs I could live without (11-14) the rest are wonderful, amazing and truly a joy to listen to. I will be checking out the samples of the other pure moods, to see which one I will make my own, next. A great way to relax after a stress filled day, or start the day listening on the drive to work.

The man who made R&B safe for smooth-jazz saxophonists has another possible Soul Train award winner featuring slick vocal excursions by Debi Nova and Dwele. There's also a real groove-a-thon with Bilal titled "Better with Time" that, like the lyrics state, is like an old soul record. Keyboards also stand out among these 10 tracks. Joe Sample delivers one of his patented short piano solos on the aptly titled "Stone Groove," and while Billy Preston's organ and Bobby Lyle's piano are not out front on "You Don't Have to Go Home," the aural picture they frame for the artist is masterful. James, who produced this album, has developed into a very solid contemporary jazz composer, adding spicy horn arrangements throughout that really showcase his growth in that area--particularly on "Here She Comes," which has an Incognito horn-section vibe to it. It all adds up to James's most rewarding album since 1998's Sweet Thing. --Mark Ruffin
Album Description
Smooth Jazz sax superstar Boney James challenges conventions with his ninth album, Pure. The premiere urban instrumentalist's first album since 2001's near-gold and Grammy nominated Ride, and the first he has wholly produced, Pure is the most soulful and freewheeling of an extraordinary career. With three straight #1 Contemporary Jazz/Top 40 R&B albums, and three career gold albums, Boney James is pure gold with Pure.
Customer Reviews:
Pure is puuurrre genious.......2007-01-12
I had to have this cd when i heard Better with time and after wearing a hole in that track i broke out and immersed myself in the whole cd. Love it!! Great music for a romantic rainy cozy day with your mate or without.
A fine, fine album!.......2006-09-25
I give out 5 stars very sparingly, and only for the truly best of the best. But this album deserves it. Where to begin to describe its merits? Boney's classy sax, the sexy grooves that effortlessly go back and forth between smooth jazz and R&B, the exquisite musical arrangements, the outstanding vocals.... this album is a must in any music lover's collection.
Urban Jazz comes of age..........2006-07-12
Pure is pure good stuff!
His first totally self-produced album with co-writing credits on all tracks. Boney grows with every new album.
And Debi Nova is simply amazing on her track.
Definitely earns it's 5-star rating from me.
The Best Boney I Have Heard.......2006-03-09
I have four other albums by Boney James. This one is my favorite. The more real drumming he uses, the more I like it.
Good Melodies but lacks the Depth.......2005-08-18
Boney is the BEST wind instrumentalist I have ever heard play and a lot of people will agree with me. Any Symphony Orchestra won't hesitate to have him in its esemble. The problem here is that his fans had been accustomed with his style from earlier recordings which I believe should not have changed. People should take note of the UK group SADE in this regard. Change your style and its back to square one.
Pity !!, but I will stay loyal. Brilliant musician nonetheless

Worth buying, could be even better........2000-01-25
This song is a real mix of styles and sounds. Most of the songs are okay...worth listening to, but nothing superb. With the exception of FireDance. This song alone brings this CD up to 4 stars. With the superb guitar playing of Daryl Stuermer (from Genesis) and the delightful flute playing of Douglas Spotted Eagle, this song stands above the rest and makes the CD worth the price. It has a wonderful Native American feel with a fair amount of rock mixed in. Superb.

Let the Ryan Fall .......2006-06-23
I'm so very, very sorry. I really wanted to like this guy. Marvelous, unique, song choices. Simple, subtle arrangements. And oh, so nice on the eyes. But, that voice is just awful. Who ever told him he had the chops? The title song starts off nice enough, but once the saxophone solo shows up he has lost the show. Likewise I wanted so very much to enjoy "I'm Checking Out," which introduced us to the fact that Meryl Streep could carry a tune, but he just massacres it. The song I most wanted to enjoy was "My Simple Christmas Wish," but what an embarrassment that was; comparing himself to, or even half believing that he could best Streisand, well, even if she lost her voice, she'd still sound worlds better. I understand he is over six feet tall, and still quite young...maybe there is a future for him in modeling, because there certainly isn't one in singing.
"Shawn Ryan IS True Bliss"...........2005-10-23
Record -(Definition)...an attested top performance.....Well you read it here first...this record is true to it's definition and may as well define the incomparable Shawn Ryan!
After the first spin of the title track "Blue Skies", there is no turning this CD off....in fact, you will probably hit play a second and third time....It is that delicious!
Shawn Ryan has a face of such sweet innocence, yet listening to his vocals, you almost wonder how he sings with an undescribable level of maturity that other artists can only hope to aspire too!
"Blue Skies" is a "feel good wonderful release".....Shawn's voice is at times mesmerizing, astounding and extraordinary! You will hear Shawn singing with a passion he pulls from his very soul, the ease in which these lyrics roll off his lips and settle into your heart will leave you with palpitations! You may want to slip into the most comfortable of chairs and enjoy this musical experience along with Shawn!!
He makes each and every song effortless in presentation, yet the range he sings with may have you wonder how someone can be so gifted with this level of talent!! His choice in material make this a wonderous adventure...I couldn't possibly critique each song, (or this review would be pages long), but "Blue Skies" is a perfect choice to begin the ride...This is the song to launch you into a timeless journey of love, happiness and sweet joy!
"I'm Checkin Out" - you will get up and dance, tap your toes and feel the music. Amazing Job!!
Listen to the words of "Baby It's Cold Outside" and hear the emotion of honesty and pride Shawn conveys. This duet with Kim Nalley is gorgeous, fun-loving and free...I applaud Shawn for keeping this real! He is someone I would be proud to know and call my friend. ...."I Love You....
"My Simple Christmas Wish" is so much fun, he has me laughing each and every time I hear the song....If you like to smile, trust me on this one, it will last throughout the whole song....oh to have been in the audience on this number!
Let's go back in time with "Goin To The Dance With You"....you cannot help but imagine the Victrola being cranked up for this nostalgic moment...That was pure genius...!
"The Very Thought Of You" - is beautifully done, the piano playing is gorgeous....
By the time you reach the end of this CD and listen to "Feelin Good".....well., the man ended this CD as he started it....with the most perfect song choices...and you will be Feelin Good...OH SO GOOD!
I'm just sorry we could only rate this CD at 5 stars.....the selection of songs by Shawn and his amazing voice alone should rate at least 10 stars....if not more!
Blue Skies is a CD you need to add to your collection of the great ones....
Shawn Ryan WILL BE the name you hear over and over again, but don't stop there....buy the CD...listen to this man sing....it could be the best $20 you spend this year!
I would also like to applaud the record label, LML Music along with Executive Producer Lee Lessack - another genius for adding this amazing talent to the ever growing roster of artists! You truly have picked another winner!!!!!!!!!!!!
And to Shawn on a personal note....you make me proud and happy! You have a god given gift and I applaud you for your talent, genius and beautiful voice....I ADORE YOU! Keep reaching for the stars...they are soooooo within your reach!
Love, Maureen
Fantastic new talent.......2005-09-05
This guy is an unbelievable new talent. I only first heard of him through a small ad in OUT magazine. I ordered this CD from Amazon and loved it. The jazz orchestrations are teriffic and reminiscent of some older Rosemary Clooney jazz albums. This guy needs more exposure, perhaps on the Today Show.
His first album is even better. I found it at his web site. The price was resonable, and he even autographed it! I ordered it on a Thursday and received it on the following Saturday.
"Somewhere Along the Way" is especially good and "Lullaby of Birdland" is swinging.
I highly reccomend both of these albums.
He is talented, goodlooking, and gay, "who could ask for anything more"

Customer Reviews:
Still a dynamite R&B album to this day!!!!!!! .......2005-06-21
I still remember buying this album just in time for summer in 1997 for a road trip. It does a good job compiling the best hits from 1994 to 1996. The 702 song kicks the album off with a bang! And there are some surprising numbers from Solo, Mint Condition, Boyz II Men, Sounds of Blackness, Gina Thompson, and the Maestro himself, Barry White! Jodeci's Freek N You and Johnny Gill's It's Your Body brings a seductive sexiness to the album. There is more of a hip-hop edge in a few songs, though this album came long before the current R&B/rap collaboration trend that works now. They didn't want to include rappers' own songs on these kinds of albums back then. This is probably one of the first albums to showcase Missy Elliott's first hits, long before her own rap dominance. This album still sizzles to this day and you definitely need to get it!!!!

Product Description
The debut release by Chicago's Premiere Vintage Vocal Jazz Quartet sets the new swingin standard in Late Lounge. TONIC hit the Windy City jazz scene in 2003 with a myopic goal to carve out a niche in the future of the Great American Songbook. Two years later theyre delivering slick vocals that put a refreshing spin on popular Songbook classics and sharp neo-pop originals, all backed by a mix of the best musicians on the Third Coast. Hailed by critics and industry greats (Cy Coleman, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Larry Gelbart, etc.) their entre to the vocal jazz world is a mix of hot harmonies and sweet that grooves from Lounge to Latin and kicking to cool. 13 cuts of solid swank with sweet harmonies and smooth solos that blend into a modern journey back to pure Vintage style.
