In the late '60s and early '70s, B.B. King made a series of albums in Los Angeles using rock-world ringers and session players as ABC sought to replicate the chart success of "The Thrill Is Gone." These recordings are mostly dispassionate filler, but this album is an exception. Produced by Bill Szymczyk and featuring guitarist Joe Walsh, pianists Carole King and Leon Russell, and drummer Russ Kunkel among its players, B.B. delivers minor classics in the stirring "King's Special" and the hard blues "Until I'm Dead and Cold." He also takes his only recorded turn at piano, vamping briefly through a flippant croon he calls "Nobody Loves Me But My Mother (And She Could Be Jiving Too)." --Ted Drozdowski

What price standard.......2007-05-13
This is standard stuff from BB, which is to say it is better than most other blues singers.
Not Your Usual B.B. King.......2006-03-10
Although Indianola Mississippi Seeds is not a classic B.B. King album in the same sense as "Live at the Regal," it has some inspired moments and offers a different perspective on the Blues with its incorporation of strings. B.B. is in fine voice here and adds some welcome humor to his piano blues on "Nobody Loves Me But My Mother." And check out his guitar solo on "Ain't Gonna Worry My Life Anymore." B.B. says it all in just a few notes. But the real highlight of this album is a completely different departure from anything B.B. has done previously. B.B.'s rendition of Leon Russell's "Hummingbird" is soulful and beautiful, especially the final choruses belted out by some of the sweetest sounding angels you will ever hear.
Nice Enough, But It Don't Sound Like Mississippi to Me.......2004-02-19
honestly, i purchased this cd on impulse. having recently moved to indianola via teach for america, when i saw a cd that beared the name of my newfound hometown, i couldn't resist picking it up, especially given that bb king hailed from indianola.
i expected some kind of true mississippi delta blues, where bb would wax poetic in a rather gritty and depressing way about life in indianola. after all, having seen a fair ammount of live blues down here (in the home of the blues no less), the singers and their music are every bit as miserable and soulful as they are caricatured to be. however, this album sounds "bluesy" but not like the down-home blues that one might expect.
first of all, the album is rather slickly produced, with stings oddly inserted in various tracks, and horns blaring in the background. the tracks sound almost more "pretty" than "blue", with a driving drumset and bb's at times joyous voice pushing the rhythm and making you want to move your feet.
in one word, the album is pleasant. very much so, in fact. while i don't profess to know very much about bb king, i imagine it would be a good cd to begin with. that said, the music at times feels like it's pandering to commercial and pop sensibilities. fortunately, it does it well, and i don't see anything wrong with pleasant music.
however, if you're looking for something that feels a little more like the delta, check out some junior kimbrough and other artists currently signed to fat possum reccords.
Beautiful and Relaxed Record.......2002-08-11
This is a very powerful and moving record. Good for both serious and dilettante blues listeners. You'll never tire of it. Can't recommend it enough. And when you love it, go buy Luther Allison's Motown 1971-75.

Edible "Seeds".......2002-01-31
Although not quite as strong and cohesive as B.B. King's previous release "Completely Well", "Indianola Mississippi Seeds" contains some sweetly scintillating, chills up and down your spine musical vibes. These bluesy, rhythmic pulsations are supplied by a bevy of young, then unknown up and coming musicians, featuring the likes of Joe Walsh (rhythm guitar), Carole King (piano/electric piano) and Leon Russell (piano/electric piano). Together, along with "The King Of The Blues" himself, these four individuals (B.B. included) really put their own unique brand of polish to the tracks featured on "IMS", such as "You're Still My Woman", "Don't Ask Me No Questions", "Until I'm Dead And Cold", "Go Underground", and let's not forget the Russell-penned "Hummingbird", where Leon gives his all both musically and lyrically here. "King's Special", the CD's lone instrumental, is indeed special. It is on this track where "Lucille" gets wonderfully downright sassy, and she pulls no punches in the process! The main thing about these "Seeds", is not only are they edible, they also contain an extra amount of sweetness, and will make any set of taste buds come to life! With that ultra-hip, snazzy CD cover (featuring a watermelon carved in the shape of a guitar), including the noteworthy musical selections featured on this disc, one would think MCA would give "IMS" the remaster treatment, to which it rightfully deserves (and thus is long overdue), complete with the original album cover artwork, including liner notes and a lyric sheet. One major drawback to various parts of the instrumentation, as featured on this "Compact Disc-Compact Price" version of "IMS", is that Joe Walsh's rhythm guitar, Leon Russell's and Carole King's piano/keyboard playing comes across as sounding barely audible in spots. Hopefully MCA will adress this issue if they decide to remaster "IMS". These pre-mastered seeds are still quite tasty, nonetheless, and will leave you craving all the moreso. So please, by all means, eat to your heart's content! After all, B.B. wouldn't have it any other way for his devoted fans (even though I consider myself to be more of a casual fan, but a lover of B.B. King's music, nonetheless).

This well-chosen 11-track collection succeeds admirably in its attempt to represent the Mississippi, the river of blues. This deep, wide, multihued collection of blues combines an expansive chronological and stylistic sweep with a commendable attention to entertainment value through its emphasis on the unexpected. Bobby "Blue" Bland's awe-inspiring vocal on "St. James Infirmary," a masterpiece of American music, is an expected highlight, but selections like Ike and Tina Turner's 1969 take on the B.B. King standard "3 O'clock in the Morning" and the electrifying Luther Allison's "Part Time Love," a Motown gem from early in his career, provide satisfying surprises. Chris Thomas King's subtle but significant modernization of Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen," a performance both rootsy and progressive, is a perfect fit for the collection. Much of the music has a folksy feel, especially the work of Mississippi John Hurt, an acoustic purist until the end, who rolls through a back-to-the-basics "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor," and that of voluntary European exile Memphis Slim, whose piano-powered "Stewball" features the legendary Willie Dixon on bass. Other legends, including John Lee Hooker and Junior Wells, are well represented, but it's Memphis Minnie, a seminal guitar star of the 1930s, who steals the show with her empowered "I Got to Make a Change Blues." --Michael Point

Mississippi Blues is a must have!.......2007-01-10
If you like good old Delta blues....then you'll LOVE this CD. I have one and gave one as a gift and the entire family listened to it over Christmas and everyone loved it.
Another good blues collection.......2006-03-26
This is another good CD I found at my friend Regina's shop, Art and Soul, in Vicksburg, MS (the south end of the Delta). It is a sampling of 11 vocalists, with various instrumental (guitar, harmonica, and/or keyboard with backup on drums, etc.). It is one of the collections put together by Putumayo, and includes a small bonus booklet inside the CD case giving a brief background of the musician/vocalists included - some are deceased, i.e., Luther Allison in 1997, Junior Wells in 1998, John Lee Hooker in 2001, and Memphis Minnie in 1963. I have it playing on my Windows media player as I write this. Playing time of the individual selections ranges from 2:23 (Bobby Bland) to 5:53 (Junior Wells).
That soothes me ..........2005-09-11
After hurricane Katrina has raged in this region the Sound of the Mississippi delta music became all the more precious. Of course "St. James Infirmary", the standard ballad for all New Orleans funerals, is represented. It talks about the pain of a man who has seen his wife a last time: "so sweet, so cool, so fair, stretched out on a long white table" in the hospital. What a music will arise now, after the dead bodies are "disposed of" with so few care. I still have a photo in my mind as a woman (near the flooded Canal Street) shoves her dead husband, whom she has bound on a door, through the water. Only the music with this Mississippi feeling, no further newspaper report, will soothe me in such moments. But if I hear the calming voice of Mississippi John Hurt again - or the infectious energy of Tina Turner - then, I think, it will go on again...
Great Gritty Blues Sampler.......2003-07-10
I heard this cd while shopping and EVERY TUNE was so hot I had to have it! Every track is unique, the artists soulful and exude the blues from their bones. This CD takes you to another place and time where it is good to feel the blues!

Customer Reviews:
Now don't you hear me talking, pretty mama?.......2005-12-05
The Mississippi Sheiks are the missing link, so to speak, between what we now know as Delta Blues and traditional rural black stringband music. Their songs have been recorded by everyone from the Camp Creek Boys to Bob Wills to the Grateful Dead (Stop and Listen Blues is the predecessor to Smokestack Lightnin').
Although our romantic notions of early Delta blues want to make Robert Johnson the hero of this time period in American music, Johnson was actually quite unpopular in his time. The Sheiks were the reigning heroes and should be remembered as such.
Fiddle players should listen carefully to this record, as Lonnie Chatmon uses several odd cross-tunings that aren't common in any fiddle repertoire. Guitar players should simply sit in awe at Bo Chatmon's (aka Bo Carter's) guitar playing on the selected tracks where he sits in, and marvel at the sparse delicacy of Walter Vinson's guitar playing.
The Mississippi Sheiks were truly their own chapter in American music history, there was no other band quite like them nor will there ever be. Pick up this record, you'll be so glad you did.
Muddy walked all day just to hear them.......2003-06-17
Read the liner notes. When he was a teenager Muddy Waters walked all day long to hear the Mississippi Sheiks! Much of Bob Wills's music starts with the Mississippi Sheiks. Their version of Sitting on Top of the World was performed by Wills note for note, word for word, in all of his recordings of the tune from the 1930s to the 1960s recording where he has Vicki Carr singing in the backgrounds to Sheiks music!
I have hipped friends who are serious violinists to the Sheiks and they have come back with words of praise for the fiddling here. As a sometimes blues singer myself, I wish I could do the tunes with half the power and joy you find here.
Curiously, the sheiks were just as, or often more popular with white audiences as they were with Blacks. In fact, they recorded several tunes under other names in the traditional string band style that were released as white hilly billy records and not race records!
They've been neglected because they do not meet the fantasy that blues players, particularly from Mississippi, are guitar playing, slide playing, Delta people. But when Muddy Waters was coming up on Stovals Planation, these guys were so good he walked all day to hear them.
Too much of this history makes one forget that this is just great music to listen to, to make you mellow, smiling, and knowledgeable about life.
Country Blues for the whole family!.......2002-02-19
I agree with the previous Music Fan who reviewed this disc - this truly is remarkable stuff!
Perhaps what is most striking is that it preserves the sound of African-American fiddling,a tradition already fading away when these 78s were first waxed and today is all but deceased,-the playing of the Blues on the fiddle is particularly poignant (listen to how cleverly the fiddle counterpoints the sung verses on "Stop and Listen" for a start!),-this music is both a priceless preservation of a lost tradition and first-rate Delta blues performances (even if the Sheiks spent much of their time in and around Jackson,Miss.).
This cd will appeal to ALL blues lovers AND to Bluegrass and Western Swing fiddle fans as well - the Bluesy fiddling here will fascinate fans of Bluegrass fiddle great Alison Krauss and pioneering Western Swing fiddler Bob Wills.
The digital restoration follows in Yazoo's exemplary excellent standards and the liner notes are very informative and a provocative read.
In short, the whole family of fiddle tastes should snap this one up!
Old Country Blues Way Ahead of Its Time.......1998-07-12
From the first song on this CD "Stop and Listen" my mouth dropped open in awe. The record could have come out yesterday and it would be good, but knowing that this came out 25 years before rock and roll was even invented is just incredible.
Listen to Walter Vinson's mournful singing "Cant ya, a-hear me talking pretty mama" and you just know this is where it all began. I'm picturing them sitting at the local gas station under the hot sun in some Mississippi desert with nobody listening to these beautiful yet bizarre blues songs except some toads. I can't believe these guys aren't as famous as Robert Johnson because they are right there in that class. Their biggest claim to fame is that they originated "Sitting on Top of the World" which has been recorded by the Dead and many other blues musicians, but it doesn't even begin to represent their amazing work. Great violin and guitar, low key and fairly simple but it has everything it needs to get the point across. Some neat melodies like in "Too Long", some great lyrics like in "He Calls That Religion", cool stories like in "Blood in My Eyes for You". This is the real deal.
This collection was put together in part by Stefan Grossman who I believe uncovered a lot of Rev Gary Davis's stuff back in the early 60s. I have been listening to this solidly for weeks and can't seem to stop.

Hoser Joe.......2005-08-31
I have had this selection on vinyl for many years. As Kavity Killer (Dentist per chance?) notes this album is akin to a spiritual mantra. Mississippi John Hurt was counting days to his promised land when he recorded this music, in all of its profoundness, in 1966. Sometimes we miss the greatest poets in our own life, concentrating instead on sensationalist memorabilia. To listen to this simple music is nye on hearing the angels for any true lover of the folk-blues tradition. Buy it, this is no one just after fame and fortune here. This is timeless.
You have to really listen to it........2003-08-30
I listened to this album about five times before I noticed something unusual. The simple songs, the traditional lyrics, the rhythmic guitar, when added up, when listened to with something resembling sensitivity, convey a staggering and intense gentleness and peace. This guy RADIATES peace like some swami or guru. The beauty, though, is that he's not laying any philisophical trip on you. He's just being himself! You can tell that he is really at peace, and listening gives you just a little hint of that same peace in your own soul. He's one of a kind. Thank God for Mississippi John Hurt.
simply wonderful.......2000-11-25
this is my first written review, and i've chosen to write about this album in particular because it's my favorite. i've been listening to it now for three or four years, and i also play his style of guitar, and this album has just grown and grown on me. he is his own little symphony orchestra, with his voice, his guitar basslines and his treble lines (which usually play the melody) working so well together...it's just music. if you haven't listened to this album (which is one of the best by m.j.h.) then give yourself a treat and do it. i tell you, this is brilliant stuff. another good album of his is the Immortal M.J.H. it truly is immortal. and anyone who says he was a better musician in 1928 as a young man doesn't know what they're talking about. voice more silky, yes, but as a guitarist and all-around singer he IMPROVED dramatically in 35+ years of practice alone on his front porch. please, buy this!
This CD is so satisfying.......1999-11-08
When I was a small child, sometimes I would lay awake in bed, listening. The adults were still up, laughing, talking, playing music. This is that tantalizing music that I never could quite hear. And it is just as good as I suspected.

Customer Reviews:
breath of fresh air.......2007-03-21
old time blues played by young man with solid roots well worth the money
Great Music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-11
I highly recommend this album. This young man is going places. He has an excellent voice and a way with words. My husband and I saw him last summer at a blues festival and even though he wasn't the headliner, he was definitely the best act there. I cannot wait until he releases his next album. Thanks so much Slick.
Soul Shine Blues Festival 09/23/06.......2006-09-24
Just got back from the Soul Shine Blues Festival in Bascom, OH. Slick and his band played the final performance and man were they great! He has an awesome voice and he can really play guitar... hard to believe he's only 21. Another prodigy like Derek Trucks!!
Albany Bluesfest, Albany,NY 2006.......2006-07-11
Everyone who loves the Blues should own this CD! In addition, do yourself a favor and see his show when he's in your area! He had 'em singing, shouting, and dancing all over Albany,NY this past weekend. THE BEST (I never met the young man before-I think Sue's review sounds personal)
This kid is the real thang.......2006-06-02
I swa Slick about a year ago while writing for the Chicago Music Guide, and I was floored when this guy took the stage. I gave the CD 4 stars because the CD does not reflect how great this guy really is. If you see that he's perforing in your town, go, run to catch his show. I see many performers and you wait for the one's who make you feel as if you just experienced something special. Buy this CD and see his show. This guy will be around for years to come.
