Freddy Cole is a marvelous singer, combining consummate ease with a lyric and acute sense of melodic and rhythmic phrasing. Whether it's the lost love of the title song or the reliable romance of Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You," Cole's warm baritone creates the impression that everything he sings has been made up on the spot, as if every lyric is the current sum of his thoughts and experiences. That conversational art is much in evidence in this mix of Brazilian and jazz tunes, extending to the way Cole interacts with his sidemen and they with him. There are two basic groups here, an all-star Latin septet with arrangements by pianist Arturo O'Farrill and Cole's own working quartet, but there are also several permutations in between. O'Farrill's work is tailor-made to Cole's throaty voice, mixing it with contrasting flute and guitar and complementary trombone timbres, the latter provided by Angel "Papa" Vazquez, just one of several superb soloists. Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander adds inventive, hard-swinging tenor to "I Concentrate"; Joe Beck's guitars define the delicacy of Jobim's "Sem Voce," sung here in the original Portuguese; and O'Farrill's piano is a dancing delight whenever it comes to the fore. Cole's own spare piano is almost as effective as his voice, a compellingly understated force on "Wild Is Love" and "There, I've Said It Again." --Stuart Broomer

Every track is superb on this cd. I think that Freddy has pulled himself out of the shadow of his brother and is standing in the spotlight alone with a fantastic recording. His voice is mature and sensuous. He makes you believe he is singing for you only, telling you of his life experiences. Bravo Freddy!!!

I had absolutely no problem playing this on my Mac, nor uploading this or other Kinkysweet comps. onto my iPod. Yet another reason Macs are better. Oh, yeah. the music's pretty good too!

It may be true that the music is outdated and unoriginal but for those who are uninitiated into the nu-bossa scene like myself then the CDs provide some pleasant enough tunes.

But the real bummer comes from the piracy protection. Impossible to play the CD on your PC without installing MediaMax's programme, and even then you can only listen when the CD is in the machine... so no copying to your computer, transfering to iPod or the likes. Surely with the rise of MP3, MediaMax will have to change this ridiculous anti-piracy protection else all their CDs will be relegated to dusty shelves and never heard.

I believe the people that think this album is rubbish; need to book a flight to Rio for Carnival 06. This album does what it intendeds to do, bring you to the city that it bears the name of. I think that this may be some of the best music compiled on any album

Well I read the review from Bordersj2 and felt I had to respond. I don't think Bordersj2 really understands what this CD is all about - I've got it (had it about 6 months now) and I play it all the time. This is the perfect cd to have around when you've got friends over. I looked at bordersj2's other reviews and it looks like he/she is a brazilian dj of some sort and obviously bitter about not being able to do the cd themselves. What the review doesn't talk about is that a good song is a good song. Just becasue a song is a couple of years old doesn't make it a bad song - can you imagine if we held this standard up to The Beatles, Rolling Stones or Led Zepelin ? This Cd is great because it creates the mood I'm looking for, i don't care if the songs are 35 years old (I'm 35 years old - am i past my expiration date too ?)

A Figure as Symbolic of Brazil as Gershwin is of America Or as Lennon and Mccartney Are of Britain. These Historic and Valuable Recordings have Never Previously Been Released Outside of Brazil. Tom Jobim Has Sold Literally Millions of Records around the World. He is Actually One of the Ten Most Recorded Popular Composers of all Time. Recorded a Big Album with Frank Sinatra in 1967 that was Second Only for Sales to "Sgt Pepper". Jobim features in Every Aspect of the Development of the Nation's Music. This is a rather charming recording for serious fans of the genius Tom Jobim. The sound quality is decent, but Jobim sings not, conducts not, plays piano nor guitar-not. But we live in the Cosmos. Rather scary down here but always strilingly beautiful. Cosmetic-to make pretty-comes from the word cosmos. Mysteriously, certain places seem full of a spirit, a cosmic vibration: Detrit, Mi. and Motown, Cali and Columbia's Salsa, Havana in Cuba, Kansas City and big band jazz, 52nd St. in New York and Bebop, Merenque from Dominican Republica, and-Brasil-the whole damn fine place! A young music professional, Jobim wrote [or co-wrote] this music ands it's informative of Brasil just as Bossa Nova was to be born. Like a charming travelouge, even the schmaltzy accordinoista, plays charming schmaltz. Hell, Jobim created the greatest schmaltz ever and did it in heavenly beautific fashion! Enough philosophy, I suggest you get Ruy Castro's wonderfully idisyncratically Brasil-ish book-Bossa Nova-The Music That Seduced the World. This audio cd makes a nice accompaniment and features many of the Brasilian artists of that time.

Herbie Mann was a hip cat and he went were the music took him. In the mid sixties it took him and his flute to Brazil to embrace the samba sounds. This is a twofer from Collectibles; the original albums were released on Atlantic about a year apart. His recording with vocalist Tamiko Jones covers hits of the day, notably, the title tune (A Man and A Woman) from the French film of the same name. The other album is Mann's recording with Tom Jobim. Many of Jobim's tunes have been recorded by a whole host of artists, but in this set, it is Jobim singing and Mann playing. A fantastic CD, especially for those who love classic bossa nova.

Anyone who loves classical music and jazz, will truly love this album. Marsalis is wonderful in his numbers, and Sarah Chang is beyond outstanding!! She plays Paganini like she really means it.

Placido Domingo is very good in his numbers. He sings with great might. But if you want more magic, get the videotape. You will see the whole effect, which is better then hearing it.

A must for a music fan. Enjoy!!

      Until recently I had never heard of the South American music greats; people writing at the same time as Mozart, Beethoven and the European Masters, but their music is every bit as great as the Europeans. Stunning arrangements, original approaches, vast choirs and orchestras, the music of baroque South America is infused with a reverence and devotion to Catholic liturgy equal to or greater than that of Europe. One of the surprising, delightfully so, aspects is the influence of indigenous music from the Andes,the jungles, and the pampas upon these composers. Sublime!
