A shifty bit of reworking.......2001-05-15

To be brutally honest: this is merely a re-release of a slightly older punk compilation (originally released in 1997) that has been renamed. That's it. Humorously, the original 3-disc set was labelled "God Save The Queen: 1976-1996" and celebrated 20 years of punk rock. Now, the exact same 3-disc set is celebrating 25 years of punk, 1976-2001. This all reeks of profit on the part of the record company.

But even with the flagrant repackaging, classic punk rock is still classic punk rock, right? Well, if you know anything about the punk reissue game, you'll know that the record label responsible for this particular often-used compilation owns none of the rights to the vast majority of "classic" punk songs. So what you get here are demo versions, live versions, and tracks from bands no one cared about then and fewer care about now. Don't expect to hear the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam, Siouxsie & The Banshees, or The Buzzcocks.

So, we've got a warmed over version of a questionable collection of "classic" punk tunes. Absolutely no redeeming qualities? Bizarre as it may sound, on a certain base level, this collection works. Despite the bad selection of songs and obvious attempt to make a quick buck off of old material (I highly doubt the original artists will see a dime from this release) the songs included are actually listenable. If only because no sane fan of punk rock would ever think of putting out something as brazen as this.

The mix of songs is good, the array of bands is nothing to be ashamed of, the sound quality is mostly good, and the price is very inexpensive. For those completely uninitiated, it might be a worthwhile learning experience, and for the old hands, a skewed walk down memory lane. This is, by NO means, a substitute for obtaining some real, honest-to-goodness CLASSIC punk rock albums (Never Mind The Bollocks, The Clash, Damned Damned Damned, Inflammable Material, Chelsea, Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts, etc.) but it's good for the occasional listen, and filled with material you are bound not to have (though probably for good reason!)
