On her fourth studio album, Messina, country's queen of hope and empowerment, roars back after a four-year hiatus, during which she went public with a stint at rehab and broke off a nine-year relationship with her fiancé. Those events stand at the center of two of the best ballads on the album ("It Gets Better" and "Sometimes Love Is Just Not Enough"), and please not only because Messina wrote (or cowrote) them from real-life struggles, but because the songs soften the numbing bombast that producers Byron Gallimore and Mark Bright bring to the rest of her repertoire. The singer--big-voiced, expansive, and as comforting as an old friend--is always a welcome presence on the radio, as she is on the album's first single, the upbeat and attitudinal kiss-off "My Give a Damn's Busted." What she needs is more songs like this that break her out of her usual mold (in addition to the aforementioned tracks that showcase her quieter side) and allow her to deliver a surprise or two. The ones offered here aren't quite as "delicious" as the album title promises, but even the most casual listener senses that Messina has so much spunk and grit that she'll gather them yet, her myopic producers be damned. --Alanna Nash

Good to see Jo Dee come back onto the charts with a very strong album, Delicious Surprise. I guess her absence was due to working out personal stuff, a bunch of which comes out on this record. It's definitely about empowerment and moving on to a significant degree. The songs have good, unapologetic lyrics, and Jo Dee sings with force and attitude. The song mix is good too. The album gets a little slower toward the end, but doesn't become tiresome. Good to have Jo Dee BAck. The really good songs on this one are:

I bought this because I heard such good things about it from people I knew and now I know that they weren't wrong! This CD is outstanding. It is from start to finish the catchiest album I have heard in a long time. JoDee makes you feel what she is singing, not just hear it. That is the way a song is supposed to be! Great work!

Two Good Songs.......2006-01-24

I have been listening to country music for probably 8 or 9 years, ever since I was really little and listening to Crystal Gayle. So i'm not just typing nonsense. This CD is not like any other Jo Dee Messina's songs and past albums, the songs have no tune or melody instead she just hollars, She is not a bad singer, and a REALLY good performer. Just these songs have no country swing. The only two good songs on the CD are
Delicious Surprise
and My Give a Damn's Busted
Of corse this is0 only my opinion, and I don't think it was a good bye, and wish I knew how the music was before I bought it.

Heavy Funk and big-time Soul.......2007-07-24

I couldn't tell if this was a good CD or not from the sample tracks. But man was I surprised when I cranked this up on a 300 mile drive to New York last week! The range and genre changes (raggie,disco,jazz/r&b) is amazing. My favorite is "Sex God". It's a real "come-and-get-me" song that N'Dea Davenport pulls off at her sultry best! Got to see them at the Capitol Jazz festival in June. TBNH turned the joint out and in the rain no less!

boy, i don't get some of these reviews at all. this cd is amazing! every track is a mini-masterpiece, and n'dea has never sounded better. i am particularly enamored with the track, "I've Been Touched," which starts out sweetly low-key but steadily builds into a good old jam. if you've ever been a fan of The Brand New Heavies, you can't go wrong with this disc.

A Blast From The Past.......2007-03-29

Like one of the previous reviewers added: this is a real group playing real instruments. This CD is a wholesome change from whats out there now musically. They bring back that natural funk flavor. Out of the 12 songs 9 are really solid (1,2,3,6,7,8,9,11,12). My favorites were "Get used to it" no.3 & "We won't stop" no.6. The 8th joint takes a thinly veiled shot at the techno enhanced music of the day. On the 7th cut they actually mention how they were attempting to bring funk back into music. N'dea returned with superb vocals after a long hiatus. She put icing on the cake, and she's still as seductive as ever.

Very good 1989 classic for sure.The best songs on this album in my opinion are Wild Thing,Funky Cold Medina,and The Homies.Wild Thing was a very big hit I don't know who hasen't heard it.Funky Cold Medina was the same way very popular.A great old school rap buy for anybody.

A Classic CD that every hip hop fan must buy.......2004-12-26

I don't care who don't likes him and/or never like his style. 'Cause he's my favorite old-school rapper alongside Young MC, MC Hammer, EPMD, Whodini, Big Daddy Kane, Chubb Rock, Public Enemy, just to name a few artists from that genre.

You see Tone-Loc always keep it real w/o ever negating the positive images that's behind hip-hop. I consider this an album that shows real sides of whats happening in the world of hip-hop right now, one that shows people that kind of rap music is worth listening to.

Now ya'll think he's the worst rapper 'cause he can't rhyme or sing? Are you saying that this s**t is wack? Hell haw, if this is not 4 you, you shouldn't buy it.

That's why a lot of people are hatin on rap right now b/c it's lost its message and/or its voice. I pray we keep our soul alive in the industry w/o ever falling apart.

Every music or must-have fan should have this 'cause they missin' a lot of real stuff that it's happening 'round our culture.

Long story short, my 1st favorites from the album are Funky Cold Medina, Wild Thing and Loc'ed After Dark. I know I love every song I download off this album.

This is highly recommend 4 those who wants to hear real hip-hop. For instance, if u see BROWN SUGAR or ever listen to Kanye West's classic album THE COLLEGE DROPOUT you would know there's a difference between them making a new direction in the hip-hop culture.

I would love for Tone-Loc to come back with a new album in the near future. No rap fan or non-rap lover should hate on this.

One of my all-time favorite rap albums..........2004-03-29

I grew up on the beginnings of rap. Ice-T, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, UTFO... these groups laid the foundations for what was to come. Approximately 10 years later Ton-Loc comes on the scene when rap was at an all-time low (in my opinion) and dance-music ruled the airwaves. Ton-Loc was different and that's what made him unique amongst all other rap artists. I first heard Ton-Loc's Wild Thing and Funky Cold Medina in '89, my senior year in high school. It wasn't until after I graduated that I heard his whole album. A friend of mine had the tape and I practically wore it out when he left it in my car. A lot of reviewers say they dislike Track 10. Me and a friend of mine were building bass systems in our cars before the car audio market started to take hold. Track 10 was and still is THE song we use to test our systems. It's the benchmark we use to this day. Track 10 was perfect for showing up at a friend's house and "announcing" yourself. In later years I ran it through a bass boost filter and made it even more powerful. Move forward 15 years and I'm still listening to this album. I like most every song except for Cheeba and Homies. You just can't find rap like this anymore because it's all been reduced to cussing and demoralization of others. This whole album is so fleshed out, something you don't find in a lot of debut albums. It's timeless in my opinion. I give this one 5 stars because I never get tired of the songs. The music is clean and crisp and sounds great on a decent system. I'm not a big rap fan anymore since most of the music on the radio nowadays is saturated with different incarnations of it, but albums like this take me back to a simpler time when rap was worth listening to.

This is not the '80s.......2004-03-04

This CD features Tone Loc's two smash hits from the late 80s, "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina". These songs are both undeniable rap classics. Unfortunately, the rest of the album is not as good as those two songs. Most of the other songs are pretty forgetable, although "On Fire" is pretty good. The album reaches a definite low point with the five minute long instrumental "Loc'in on the Shaw", which Loc doesn't even appear on. Fans of old school rap may want to get this CD, if only for the two hits.

Like De La Soul's Three Feet High & Rising, the Pharcyde's 1992 debut came at a time when hip-hop was headed in one direction, but the group was going somewhere else entirely. A crew of spunky b-boys armed with a self-deprecating sense of humor, the Pharcyde made an album that was fresh and profoundly honest. "Ya Mama" is a clever array of mother jokes set to cartoonish beats; "On the DL" has each MC unguardedly making self-denigrating confessions (like Fat Lip admitting to masturbating--previously a hip-hop no-no); and "Passin' Me By" is an ode to hopeless crushes on unattainable women. The group's playfulness was also infused with smarts, too, most visibly on "Officer." Recorded around the time of the Rodney King verdict, the song was an indictment of racial profiling--shrouded, of course, in a comic tale that parodied Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos." With animated beats from J-Swift (the West Coast version of Prince Paul) and four distinct rhyming styles, particularly Slim Kid Tre's melodiousness and Fat Lip's nerdiness, this album captures an innocence rarely seen in the music's posturing ways. Awesome Fun B-Boy Music (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-03-02

If I had to pick an album that can discribe the type of personality that I have, it would be this one here, "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde". Funny that this album dropped back in 1992 and came from Los Angeles. A time and a place where gangsta rap was beginning to get in full spin, this group provided an excellent alternative in hip hop music. I remember when I saw the video "Passing Me By" a few years ago and thought it was an awesome song. Another excellent song would be the jammin' song "Soul Flower", a party track that packs a punch. Infact this whole CD here will be garunteed to provide something for anyone to like. From laughable songs like "Oh Sh.." and "Officer" to those love songs like "Otha Fish" to old school '88 type hip hop like "Return Of The B-Boy". This CD has it all.

No CD is perfect in anyway, but I find this to come very close to perfection. This masterpiece by The Pharcyde is one of the best CDs you can have if you love hip hop. It brings back memories of back when hip hop was fun and at the same time showed off your skills on the mic ("Housing MFs like a real estate agent" - "I'm The Type Of ***** In Charge). That is exactly what this album is all about, making fun music.

I always said that the west coast can come with come of the most creative music in hip hop. This album continues to validate my statement. I heard their follow up "Labcabincalifornia" was dope as well, and I will check that out also.

this is a great reason why radio sucks today. there was once a period where you could hear gems that came off this single until you were sick of them. now, you have to fight sleep (at least where i dwell) just to hear quality material like this.

this is class all the way. great west coast hip hop. shoot, this makes me remember groups like freestyle fellowship, da wascals, madkap, and the nonce. before this came out, i never heard a west coast act that made me forget that they were from california. they do not make them like this anymore...........ANYWHERE!!!!! i recommend absolutely everything.

Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (Delicious Vinyl 1992)

In a time when gangsta rap dominated completely - not just on the westcoast, but in the whole country - there was this nice quartet. A breath of fresh air and a style unlike anything else. Slim Kid Tre, Imani, Fat Lip & Bootie Brown was a part of the rising freestylescene in L.A., and they were more inspired by Native Tongues rather than N.W.A. and Ice-T. Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde shows musical creativity and it sounds playful. There wasn't any pressure. You could just be yourself, and that's an important premise for many classics.

Humor, honesty and charm are three other important clues, and it was this that separated The Pharcyde from the other rappers. The production is mostly handled by J-Sw!ft, he rotated between funky b-boy songs as "I'm That Type Of N*" and "Officer" and more jazzy stuff like "4 Better Or 4 Worse" and "Otha Fish". It's a lot of James Brown and J.B.'s samples, but also jazznames like Herbie Mann and Lou Donaldson. On the classic single "Passing Me By" they used Quincy Jones' "Summer In The City", but it also features a Jimi Hendrix sample. The other singles, "Ya Mama" and "Otha Fish", are also reckoned classics. On "Otha Fish" Slim Kid (now better known as Tre) could swing free with his wonderful laidback singin'. The record has a totally unique feel and energy, and not since De La Soul's revolutionary debut from 1989, 3 Feet High & Rising, had we heard an album this consistent positively and unceremonious. The Pharcyde didn't quite manage to follow up the success, even though their second, Labcabincalifornia, was a respectably try. However Bizarre Ride... have assured them a spot in "the Hip-Hop Hall Of Fame", and this set belongs home in every serious collection.

The most entertaining hip hop album EVER.......2006-04-28

"Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" is a prime example of hip hop at its best. I believe that it is one of, if not the, very greatest hip hop album ever recorded. I have listened to hundreds of albums, all of the ones that other people claim to be the best ever, yet nothing entertains me like "Bizarre Ride". I love everything about it. The MCs (Slim Kid Tre, Fatlip, Imani Wilcox, and Bootie Brown) are absolutely hilarious, and they seriously make me laugh everytime I put this in the player. J-Swift made his mark as one of the world's greatest producers, creating beautiful jazzy, funky, and ridiculous beats for them. The subject matter goes all over the place. At one minute they're telling a silly story, the next bashing the police, and the next telling mama jokes. They yell and chant every chorus. Their immature, harmonious voices, along with a great flow, will keep you listening for the end and you'll keep coming back for more "Bizarre Ride".

The first full song is called "Oh Sh*t", a hilarious mix of stories that made the four use the exclamation. Between being busted and finding your lady is a man, over a jazzy and bluesy beat, this song is great. "4 Better Or 4 Worse" also has a great soulful beat, awesome chorus and on-point lyrics. "I'm That Type Of N**ga" is just a happy, catchy song, with a sax loop, funny chorus, and more great rhymes. "Soul Flower" is maybe my favorite beat here, it makes my head bob and puts me on the brink of dancing every time, and the beat to "On the DL" is just as great, a bass and drum heavy track with great vibes. The lyrics and hooks to both do not slack, and both are classics. "Officer" is an anti-police anthem, but it's done in the signature Pharcyde style, half-kidding the entire song. It almost sounds like a parody of a Public Enemy song, with the spinning, loopy beat and chorus. "Ya Mama" is maybe the funniest song I've ever heard. The beat is great, and I know you think you've heard mama jokes before, but wait till you hear this. A peg leg with a kickstand? An afro with a chinstrap? Where do they get this stuff? This is perfectly followed by "Passin' Me By", indisputibly one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time. The beat is among the best ever, and the lyrics tell the stories of the girls that got away. It's as legendary a hip hop song as any. "Otha Fish", one of my favorites, has a toned down, happy beat with flutes, providing hope to any lovesick teen. "Pack the Pipe", a silly story which involves giving weed to a 4-year old, and "Return of the B-Boy", an excellent groove, finish the album amazingly in a way only the Pharcyde could. Throughout the album, hilarious skits like "Quinton's on the Way", "It's Jigaboo Time", and "Pack the Pipe" only enhance the tracks.

"Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" is a must-have for anyone who likes hip hop. It has the funniest lyrics and immaculate production. Everything went right on "Bizarre Ride", and I speak of it among the best ever, with other greats from the early 90s period like Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Souls of Mischief, and A Tribe Called Quest. You don't know what you're missing without this in your collection.

YES! THE MOST ORIGINAL HIPHOP ALBUM OF ALL TIME.......2006-04-25

FRESH. The feeling you get from Bizarre Ride II is similar to that off a bottle of chilled water on a summer's day...REFRESHING. Now that may sound to cliched, but it's true. At a time when Hiphop was constantly progressing as different artists and groups were bringing something new to the table, and making a name for themselves (1992) the Pharyce stepped up and blew away any competition for that time. This album has that x-factor that only a true Hiphop fan can appreciate. Now I do not agree with reviewers that say that this is one of the last great hiphop albums to come out before commercialism started to ambush Hiphop, since 1993/1994 was pretty much the beat years for hiphop with virtually the most innovative and creative albums in hiphop coming out, but I can see how this album can over-shadow any later releases. Now, for the music. The album contains 11 tracks and 5 skits (some of the most entertaining skits that only enhance the flow of the album further) all of which display their own individuality and carry their own memorability. "Passin Me By" is considered to be one of the best hiphop songs off all time, and it can be understood why as Fatlip etc drop a little tale over one of the most addictive and fresh melodies ever laid down (courtesy of J-SWIFT. However, unlike some releases this does not over-shadow any other song on the album resulting in you finding your "favourite" track will continually change until the day you die. "On the DL" is one of the most refreshing Hiphop songs I have ever heard, period, displaying nothing short of amazing lyrics, originality and production that only keeps you hitting the rewind button. Similarly, tracks like Ya Mama and Officer offer a more entertaining experience that contributes to justification of the albums deserved trademark title of "originality", whilst tracks like "oh Sht" and "soul flower remix" give a catchy and addictive vibe that are ideal for when you feel a bit hype or just want to engage with your music! It's all here, you are reading a review for one of the most unique and replayable albums in history, regardless of genre. The Pharcyde display styles that no other hiphop group posess or can match, and this album is the perfect oppurtunity to indugle in Hiphop's most creative side! This needs to be in the hands of a person who truly appreciates Hiphop with that Jazzy Fresh Vibe. If not, look elsewhere as this is not for you...You will not understand.PEACE

Album Description

A classic kirtan (yoga chant) music CD, featuring world instruments in rhythm and sound and a large chorus from Milwaukee's ongoing Kirtan with Ragani event. Based upon the sacred kirtan (yoga chant) music of India, this CD was released as a tribute to Sri Swami Rama of the Himalayas. Proceeds from CD sales will support the charitable hospital in the foothills of northern India and nonprofit organizations established by Swami Rama.

Chant to Travel.......2007-03-09

I first heard this CD when my friend Wendy brought it during a visit to Oregon. We chanted the whole way to the Bonneville Spa and Hotsprings. I liked it so much I borrowed it for a week and finally got my own. Ragani has the most lovely voice and the instrumentals are fulland luscious.

Best of Both Worlds truly is a fine blend of traditional Indian chants and modern recording .......2006-06-25

What immediately strikes me about this recording is Ragani's sincere devotion to her guru and to the divine. This is evidenced in the opening mantra, the Akhanda Prayer, a beautiful prayer to the Guru. Though I am not a musician, each chant on this CD seems to me to be well recorded and more importantly these chants are infused with Ragani's sincerity as a bhakta. I feel as though I am listening to a seasoned yogini when I listen to this fine collection of chants.
Especially appealing to me about these chants is the shift from a slow repetition of the Name to an accelerated and ecstatic repetition. The gradual acceleration has the effect of locking my mind's attention onto the mantra so that by the time the chant ends, my mind is subdued and I experience the peace brought about by the chant. In other words, when the chant is moving very quickly, there is less room for thoughts (other than the Name) to creep in. By the time the chant speeds up the Name takes hold and my mind begins to settle down. My particular favorites are Sita Ram and Shiva Hara. Whereas Sita Ram is intense, by contrast Shiva Hara is light and uplifting. In addition, the chants on this CD are all in call in response style which makes participation in the chants very easy.

I thought no other kirtan style music could even compare to Krishna Das (whom I love dearly), but Ragani's voice is so beautiful. This CD is enchanting so much so that I cannot seem to tire of listening.

Exquisitely Beautiful.......2004-11-28

This is one of the best New Age/Kirtan CDs of recent years. The final track, "Rama Rama" is one of the most achingly beautiful songs I've ever heard. It's as if you're listening to Sita, the legendary heroine of the epic Ramayana, actually calling for her husband Rama, who's half a world away. Ragani is one of the most inspired artists in the new genre of Western kirtan music. I play this CD often.

With all tracks being produced by J-Swift, the man responsible for the Hip Hop classic, "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde", you know this is gonna be solid. On top of that, Mr. Delicious Vinyl, Michael "the genie granting all our wishes" Ross, is the Executive Producer of this doubled sided, enhanced CD called "Greatest Hits." The collection includes the original album, ten instrumentals, four bonus tracks and two extremely rare videos for "Class Clown" and "The Dips." All of which were done in 1994, back when Rap actually meant something. Now for some background: Back in 1993, J-Swift set up the Wascal Castle studio almost immediately after finishing "Bizarre Ride...", to work with his 'baby' Pharcyde group, The Wascals. Bucwheed, Spit Anky, Alfalfa and St. Imey had been warming up on the sidelines, while Imani, Booty Brown, Fatlip and Slim Kid Tre were circling the globe. They jumped into the game by dropping their first 12" called "The Dips" in mid 1994, and followed that single up with "Class Clown" backed with "Hard Rhymes." The Wascals were poised to become a sensation until the group mysteriously imploded and the album got shelved. Jump ahead to the present, J-Swift and Michael Ross went into the Delicious Vinyl vaults to dust off this never before heard classic. The album is jam packed with goodies and every track showcases J-Swift and the Wascals at the height of their powers, as the psychedelic jazz beats blend seamlessly with crazy voiced lyrical shenanigans. It also features guest vocals on one track, and a remix of another, by Fatlip of The Pharcyde. This is not an album to ignore.

Mature, artistic, and focused.......2007-01-04

The Pharcyde returned in 1995 three years after their debut album, a debut that was one of the best of all time and the most entertaining hip hop album I've ever heard. For their sophomore album, however, the Los Angeles quartet of Booty Brown, Slimkid Tre, Imani Wilcox, and Fatlip showed a totally new and refreshing style. Where "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" showed a group of hilarious and immature juveniles joking and discussing issues facing teens over cartoon-style beats, "Labcabincalifornia" displays men who have matured into adulthood and now celebrate the essence of hip hop. Lyrically, the MCs are less frequently humorous and much more intelligent sounding, dropping numerous verses that make you want to check the liner notes and read all the lyrics. They also use their interesting voices more creatively, often harmonizing and singing. But the real treat of this album that makes it stand apart from their debut is the production. This album has a very smooth and focused tone that is very unique, thanks to Jay Dee's influence, the amazing producer who produces most of the cuts on the album. I think that on "Labcabincalifornia," the Pharcyde took some cues from Hieroglyphics and some of the later Native Tongues to make a more mature and artistic album that stands apart but is equally as enjoyable as their debut.

The album begins with the excellent "Bulls...," a laidback sounding cut where the rappers deliver inspirational lyrics that inspire to forget worries and troubles and "stop fightin' that feelin'." The next song, "Pharcyde," is a little more introductory and allows the group to represent themselves over a nice beat. "Groupie Therapy" speaks fondly of the Pharcyde's interactions with women throughout their lives, on a song produced by East Coast producer Diamond D. The true standout of the tracklist is "Runnin'," possibly the best song of the group's catalog. This song has deep lyrics discusses dealing with problems and an awesome, signature-styled musical backing from Jay Dee. I also love "She Said," a slow groove that just sounds happy and makes my head nod. "Splattitorium" and "Somethin' That Means Somethin'" are two good songs that precede the great "Drop." "Hey You" provides more of the tight focused sound that makes "Labcabincalifornia" so excellent, and "Y?" has the MCs asking why life has to be so hard through their struggles. "Moment in Time" is a musical highlight, and "Hustle" is an interesting song where the group lends the microphone to some unknown rappers. "Devil Music" is a humorous and catchy song, and "The E.N.D." ends the album on a good note.

I highly recommend that fans of lyrical and artistic hip hop check out "Labcabincalifornia." Those who liked the Pharcyde's debut or are fans of artists like Souls of Mischief, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Common, and other like-minded rappers will love this album. This is one of the finest works of the awesome underground hip hop wave of the mid nineties and I highly suggest listeners give it a purchase.

Jazzy brilliance with depth in both lyrics and tune.......2006-07-16

This album along with Illadelphi halflife by the roots is my favourite hip hop album. It has depth due to Tre hardson giving it some soulful background vocals and rapping, Bootie Brown with a distinguished style and Slim kid 3 who matches Bootie throughout. The integration of samples into the tunes works superbly as you aren't aware of how much sampling goes on until you look in the CD sleave. Its much more mainstream than other Pharcyde albums released previously and signified the short entry on the big stage. An album which doesn't just talk about the hood in general but covers personal problems such as the most famous "runnin'" which is a true classic. Full of metaphors and intelligent writing that leaves you thinking of inner meanings but at the same time light sounding, soulful, jazzy, vibrant and fresh. If you've been listening to hardcore hip hop for years realised that all of it is the same (as did I) and are looking for a more intelligent album that comes from the soul buy this beauty.

The Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia .......2005-07-20

The Pharcyde's second album was "Labcabincalifornia" (1995). The Los Angeles group consisted of Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart Tre "Slimkid" Hardson, Imani Wilcox, and Romye "Booty Brown" Robinson. Pharcyde, Slum Village's Jay Dee, M. Walk and Diamond D produced this 17 track release. The albums opener Jay Dee produced "Bull****" is a dope track which was an immediate head nodder. My favorite track on this release is "Runnin", a smooth track, the Pharcyde drop some memorable lyrics and a chorus to remember. On "Something That Means Somethin" the Pharcyde drops some conscious lyrics, while ripping up "Drop" with fast paced rhymes. "Y?" has the Pharcyde talking about betrayals and the ups and downs of life. A short interlude follows, then Slim Kid shines on the premium M-Walk produced "Moment In Time", a track dedicated to those who died to young. The Pharcyde talk about their ambitions to make it on "Hustle". Backed by some heavier sounding beats, Pharcyde then deliver "Devil Music". The album closes off with the "The E.N.D.", a track, which has the Pharcyde giving thanks, Kamau delivers a memorable on point guest verse. The Pharcyde delivered original and memorable music with their last major release "Labcabincalifornia".

Very Solid Sophmore album.......2005-04-22

I remember i rushed to the store to buy 'LabinCalifornia' after hearing "Runnin'"....That song still remains one of my favorite tracks of all time....The rest of the album is dope as well....All four mc's do a solid job of providing sick rhymes covering all kinds of topics....The beats on this album are much more polished than their debut album...."Drop" was an instant classic known for its insane beat....

If you're a hip hop fan, this is a must have album

Classic Retro-70's Sounds Re-Coined As "Acid Jazz" in The Early 90's!!.......2006-02-12

I love this album because it was my introduction to the BNH!
You can tell that the band had grew up on such
70's American R&B icons as Stevie Wonder,
Brass Construction, Curtis Mayfield, Ohio Players,
E,W&F and Rufus feat. Chaka Khan as well as
70's fusion jazz like Herbie Hancock,
Roy Ayers Ubiquity, The Blackbyrds and
Lonnie Liston Smith, but they wove it into an
interesting and refreshing sound that ruled the
early to mid 90's and influenced acts like
Jamiroquai, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Amiel Lamiereaux,
etc. and became known as neo-soul here in the states.
N'Dea Davenport's fluid vocals are the perfect
marriage to the bands funky "jazz-perations"!
"Dream Come True", "Stay This Way" "Ride In The Sky" and
"Never Stop" will always have a special place in my heart
and if you like this one, then check out 1994's
sizzling "Brother-Sister", which is just as or
more hot as this one!

This is a Cool album ,N'dea has a voice that transcends time ,she would have been a Knockout in the 50's 60's and 70's ,the Honesty with which she sings really resonates and track 9 in particular is Wonderful.Buy the CD and lets all support these talented People ,they are after all giving us there SOUL.

Got To Give Them Credit,But............2005-05-25

Well the Brand New Heavies 1991 debut CD is pretty overrated.Just speaking in sheer quality of song it just isn't as good as wehat was to come not only from them but the Brit funk/acid jazz movement to come.The Heavie's main goal from the start was to showcase real instruments and play retro 70's soul and funk,or some modern version of it.But sadly this band isn't too intent on creating songs here-most of the pieces here tend to recycle endless musical clishe's from Tower Of Power and James Brown,whitch means alot of jamming grooves that are fairly tuneless.That being said "People Get Ready" and "Stay This Way" are the only true 'songs' on the album.And nothing personal but N'Dea Davenport is a really pedestrian soul singer and,frankly not transcendant enough a vocalist that this type of music demands.
All this being said I am a HUGE funk fan.My record collection includes all the classics by James Brown,P-Funk,Earth,Wind & Fire,Cameo,The Bar-Kays,Con Funk Shun,Heatwave,Slave,Chaka Khan and just about every combination you could THINK of in between.I am not unlearned in the subject.But personally Jameroqui's 1993 debut on Work is FAR superior to this-the musical idea's have more definition and an strong attempts are made at songwriting.I baught all the hype about this album being real funk and soul.But at least here The Brand New Heavies seem to know all the forms but not any of the substances.That comes from experience and character.And while for a debut this could be alot worse it's just so overrated and overhyped I had to give a more realistic appraisal on it.Don't avoid this but it is NOT the first Brand New Heavies album to buy and certainly not my idea of an introduction to modern funk.

Funk from an unlikely source.......2005-04-28

London is not exactly the place you usually think of when you're looking for searing funk music and surely the Brand New Heavies themselves are in on that joke. (Their publishing company is "Varry White Music", a play on Barry's name no doubt, as well as acknowledging that 3/6 of the members are Caucasians.) The fact that your first inclination is to snicker means you haven't heard these cats.

Every track here sounds like it might have been a lost outtake from the decade of "Superfly" and "Shaft". Despite the great chops of the band members, the real treasure here is the vocals of N'Dea Davenport who seems to have just what each song she's featured on needs, effortlessly floating above "Stay This Way" or testifying for "Dream Come True".

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Shakedown" and "Sphynx" are the standout instrumental tracks here with all 4 songs where N'Dea sings also being stellar ("Dream Come True", "Never Stop", "Ride in the Sky", and "Stay This Way")

LOWS:
"Gimmie One of Those" is probably the least interesting track here. It's an instrumental that's merely average compared with the more interesting ones that surround it.

BOTTOM LINE:
This band is the real deal. Chickenscratch guitar, in the pocket rhythm, and soulful vocals. If you have any interest in funk or acid jazz, you need to check out this album.

Wow, only 11 reviews for one of the better releases of the early 90's? Well, I just had to add my 2 cents worth of love for this disc. I fell in love with the single, DREAM ON DREAMER, which got heavy play on both the radio & video channels I watched back in the day.

The funny thing about a group like BNH which produces high quality music and is a somewhat self-contained band is that their music definitely stands the test of time. For those who get it in 2006 or after, they'll probably be very surprised to note that this disc was released in 1994! The group specializes in r&b funk and features one of the unique voices in r&b, N'Dea Davenport - while also producing terrific instrumental songs.

To this day, my favorite tracks are: DREAM ON DREAMER, DAYBREAK, SPEND SOME TIME, BROTHER SISTER, TEN TON TAKE, FOREVER & SNAKE HIPS.

If you don't have this disc in your collection and you like funkdified neo-soul, then you will love this disc!

I still love this album 12 yrs after the fact!
This album is like watching one of those great
Scorsese pictures that have been out for yrs
but every time you see it, you see something that
you never saw before!(In this case, hear!)
N'Dea and the boyz were kickin' azz
and takin' names on this one from the begining to end!
This is just a masterpiece and dare I say,
a template to which the whole neo-soul movement
was built from! (*This one and Me'shell N'Degeocello's
1993 debut "Plantation Lullabies"!!)

What can I say about one of the greatest funk bands known to man? BNH is pure FUNK to the core and inner most soul. Gravy-ness, nothing but pure gravy. Just put the music on and let it go. I love the songs and N'Dea Davenport is just perfect with them. The songs are way bomb, the bass lines are hotness and that makes for a great sound and an awesome band. I have never had the pleasure of hearing them live and if I had one regret in life that would be the one. Awesome band. Pure gravy-ness.
