Wim Mertens is my favourite minimalist along with Philip Glass. This soundtrack has it all. Great themes - probably the most memorable themes of any other soundtrack and intense atmospheric playing. The production of this CD though is very 'minimal', more so than any CD you'll ever buy for $20. I can not think of any other CD of that price range lacking all the essentials. A pitty.... 5+ * for the music, 1 - * for the package.

I have not seen the Peter Greenways'film.. and maybe
I won't do that.. I am afraid to get dissapointed because
for me this CD reflects so much creativity and passion.
Three tracks are for me some of the best piano compositions ever:

If you like nice orchestral music, often stirring emotions of love and heartbreak, but still uplifting, go buy this album. It's that easy. I first heard a song from Wim on a Cafe Del Mar album and had to buy his entire album. It was obviously worth it and I think you'll agree when you listen to it. So go buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A superb introduction to the minimalism of Branca & Mertens.......2001-06-24

This soundtrack for the Peter Greenaway film of the same name almost steals the film with it's careening, cyclical piano pieces perfectly matching architect Stourley Cracklite's world slowly collapsing amidst the Roman ruins of contemporary Rome. The soundtrack to the film is one of the few by Peter Greenaway that does not feature his usual partner in crime Michael Nyman. The soundtrack was initially developed by New York based minimalist composer Glenn Branca, but was largely rejected by Greenaway. An earlier release of this soundtrack did feature a few dramatic Brancian orchestral swells, but unfortunately this release (given the track listing) seems to have left these pieces off, which is a shame.

This release features the brilliant work of Belgian minimalist piano composer Wim Mertens, and is utterly stunning in it's emotional intensity, power and beauty, with cyclical piano motifs spinning the listener around in an intense but gorgeous emotional journey. Some of the work covered on this soundtrack can be found on Mertens' career highlight release 'Close Cover' (sadly out of print at the time of this writing). Those interested in work by Glenn Branca should also look to explore his early 80's orchestrated guitar recordings (some of which are not for the fainthearted), as well as 1992's sublime 'The World Upside Down'.

This is one of the best soundtrack recordings I have ever heard, and still sends chills through me almost ten years after seeing the film. It also represents an excellent introduction to the works of two very under-rated yet important modern composers.

I'm sorry for my english, I'm spanish. I only want to say that Wim Vertens changed my life. Please , why this person is not a famous compositor? I am not an old person that hate pop music. I'm 22 and a electronic music composer in Spain, I talk about Wim Vertens discography not only this cd. His music go inside my mind and the time stop, When I finish I don't know where I am, who I am, I only know that my life has one way, be happy. Five stars for this person that love the life.

    Ian Partridge's artistry is unparalleled, and his voice has a silky smoothness that creates atmospheres and colors in ways that melt the heart. This collection of 20th century English songs, originally recorded for Oxford University Press as a definitive edition, delivers more emotion, subtlety, and enjoyment with each listening. Included are love ballads, humorous settings, and songs highly evocative of the Old Country. Every disk by Partridge is a beautiful discovery. Start with this one, and move to others.

      Was this recording of Quilter songs (Complete Folk-Song Arrangements and Complete Part-Songs for Women's Voices) a vanity project for soprano Amanda Pitt? It is hard to explain in any other terms, for her voice is not pleasant to hear. It is a pinched, badly produced, squally sound - the sort of standard one would expect in a not very gifted singing student. Why Naxos permitted this travesty of a recording under their label is a mystery.

      The majority of the songs on this CD are sung by the aforesaid Amanda Pitt (soprano). The other singers in this project are of a better standard - in the case of Philip Langridge, beautiful to listen to. This recording is not worthy of his excellent career and lovely tenor voice. The other two singers - mezzo Joanne Thomas and baritone David Wilson-Johnson - are not bad, either, although the mezzo doesn't get a single solo. The lack of a solo for Ms Thomas is glaringly evident when compared to the ten (10) solos which Ms Pitt sings. (10 out of 21 solos - definitely an unfair ratio. Of these ten solos, several could have been given to the mezzo to sing - they were certainly not beyond the average mezzo range.)

      The rest of the album consists of duets - thirteen of them. Eleven of the thirteen duets are soprano/mezzo, and in spite of the mezzo's voice (from what one is permitted to hear of it) isn't bad, the duet performances are frankly awful, chiefly because of Ms Pitt. Even the superior quality of Philip Langridge's singing cannot save the two duets he sings with Amanda Pitt.

      It's artistically an insulting and atrociously unbalanced distribution of material.

      Look for the John Mark Ainsley/Lisa Milne recording of Quilter songs & arias. Admittedly, it doesn't include most of the duets on this CD, but oh, the sheer pleasure of hearing well-trained and lovely voices give Quilter a worthy treatment!

          This is a superb compilation ~ Evenly fitted together for a most sublime effect ~ I would advise letting the music do it's magic rather than expecting something else. This is most gratifying and any Cage, Feldman, Ligeti, Adams, Wuorinen, Glass or Reich fan will love this. Exceptional!!

          This is not an anthology which I find myself able to recommend. John Adams is the most significant composer represented here; yet the work included by him is merely an excerpt. The complete work can be found elsewhere, paired with "Shaker Loops."

          The works by Satoh, Dresher, and Scott are interesting enough, while the I find the works by Marshall and Lentz quite inaccessible.
