Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. The duo starts big with the title track--Jack's fast-tumbling, falsetto-tinged lyrics jagging on hyper keyboard-sounding segues and Meg's pounding drums. They rarely shy from an idea, invoking acoustic Bob Dylan to frame "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues," but interjecting a series of distortion-laden guitar paroxysms for good measure. For the longest time the White Stripes were my guilty pleasure. Saying their name around musicians is like uttering the name Charles Darwin among Christians or George Bush among Democrats. However, the Whites seem oblivious to outside praise and criticism. They are an anomaly: A two piece band who reduces genres to their bare essentials to see how many ways they can twist, hammer, and shape it into something viable. They do this without an ounce of flash or technical abilities. Jack's near juvenile guitar playing, and Meg's "trained monkey on drums" abilities are among the worst in all of music. The Stripes are essentially an exercise in maximization through minimalization. The variations and nuances they're able to saturate this simplicity with is extraordinary. The results are endlessly surprising and rewarding.

They also seem to alternate - album wise - between interpretations on traditional forms (rock, pop, folk) and experimentation: Although these two sides - the traditional and experimental - are almost always integrated, the focus usually remains on one. De Stijl was their most traditional blues/pop album, with Elephant being a logical progression on that concept that expanded the overall palette. White Blood Cells is perhaps their quirkiest, as it leaped into vast new territories and styles, with Get Behind Me Satan being a focused, refined, near perfection of that stylish mishmash. Now to Icky Thump: At once a return to tradition and complete perfection of it. The spiritual precursor to Icky is Elephant - not the experimental Get Behind Me Satan. The first three songs epitomize this concept:

The title track is monumental, crushing rock. Featuring a towering riff from Jack White, A pulsing "thud" beat from Meg. Along with a vocal delivery that teeters on the edge of manic breakdown and complete control, spitting venom the entire time. "You Don't Know What Love Is" is a foray back to De Stijl and pop in its purest form with no excess. It's also perhaps (and I say this tentatively) the best pop song Jack has written. From electric and eclectic to calm with aplomb (bad wordplay, I know) we get to "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues" (I have to gasp just saying it!). This song evokes Bob Dylan like nothing else I've heard from the White Stripes or anyone. The reiterated acoustic lick is absorbing in its meditative restraint. The electric breaks only provide a contrast rather than a driving force to the track.

Then we head into the experimental grasp of Jack again. "Conquest" is pounding and incessant, with its horn flourishes evoking a definite Mexicano vibe. From Mexico to Ireland (or Scotland) we get "Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn". An acoustic, Irish (Scottish?) clog dance that's as charming as anything Jack has done. "St. Andrew" provides a kind of epilogue to "Prickly Thorn' with its accelerating rhythm being lead by a lively bagpipe and miniscule female vocals. "Little Cream Soda" continues the 'Little' tradition, returning to the metal tones of "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" with a distortion drenched riff from Jack that's as good as any he's produced. "Catch Hell Blues" features a tumultuous slide riff that's vaguely reminiscent of "Little Bird" from De Stijl, but more hellish and electric. Jack also hasn't lost his sense of humor. Both "Rag & Bone" and "Effect & Cause" are as whimsical as anything he's done. The former being a rhythmic, comical take on requesting people's unwanteds and the latter being a country-esque romp on refusing to accept the consequences of one's actions.

What catapults this album above the previous Stripes' efforts is Jack's transcendent leap in his lyrical and vocal stylings. I normally don't care for lyrics, but Jack White forces you to pay attention to his due to the inventiveness at which he writes and the originality in which he delivers. The title track being a prime example: At first it sounds akin to a rapper's delivery as Jack rhythmically blurts out variations on "ump", while expanding on this concept throughout. Jack wrenches, bends, twists and distorts syllables; emphasizing serpentine rhythmic drive over melody. This is similar to The Beatles' most experimental vocal work, and Dylan's flow of delivery. Jack's variety of emotive abilities are among the best in all of modern music. If the idea of song is the fusion of music and words - where one acts to enhance the other - then The Stripes may personify that idea better than any other these days.

This album only 'fails' - a better term would be "fail to surpass previous efforts" - when Jack doesn't push himself. Reverting back to comfortable territory. "Bone Broke" is an attempt to return to their punkish, garage days - but it is no Fell In Love With a Girl. Both "I'm Slowly Turning Into You" and "A Martyr for My Love for You" are decent, but lacking in the freshness the rest of the album permeates. However, their inclusion is welcome as they're too good to be considered filler.

If any Stripes albums could truly be called serious, then Icky Thump is the furthest away from that definition. Rather, this is Jack and Meg at their most playful and fun. Confident in what they can do, they produce songs that effortlessly fit within their respective abilities. As always, variety is key. Acoustic, electric, and ultimately eclectic, Icky Thump isn't a radical departure for the Whites, but just an assured, adept execution of their wealth of styles and ideas. It's the nuances that reward repeated listens. This isn't musically dense material, but it's subtle music all the same. Perhaps the only other fault is that in the Stripes' refusal to strive for eminence they may also never reach the heights of albums like Highway 61, Sgt. Pepper, or Born to Run (insert your applicable favorites). If Icky Thump is their peak (and it may be), then I only wonder where they go from here.

The White Stripes have transformed me from a hesitant supporter into an avid one. If Get Behind Me Satan was my acquiescence, then Icky Thump was my revelation. No longer do I consider them my great "guilty pleasure". I could solely appreciate the fearlessness at which they tackle everything. Most bands walk on eggshells afraid of failing, but The Stripes seem apathetic to the notion that they could - with any misstep - ruin their popularity. Instead, they seem rather insouciant about the entire thing - likely wondering how a quirky garage band ended up being hailed as the 'saviors' of pop music. They seem to belong to a bygone era. One in which bands pushed themselves into uncharted waters - daring themselves to improve - growing and evolving in the studio instead of behind closed doors. Perhaps, most importantly, they seem to produce everything with a real sense of passion and honesty, completely lacking any of the contrivances and pretenses in modern pop and rock music.

In the end, I can only echo what Steve Vai (I believe it was) said about them: "Out of tune. Out of time. Beautiful."

If this were an EP and the album ended after track 7, than I'd really enjoy it. The 2nd half of the album just sounds like filler. At least the price was right. It's a shame the music of today lacks the heart and energy of the artists in the late 60's & early 70's.

5 out of 5 stars White Stripes Best Album In Years - Rock N Roll Is Back For Jack.......2007-07-23

This album is worth the $9.99 price if only for songs 9-12. ("Rag and Bones", "I'm Slowly Turning Into You", "Martyr For My Love For You" and finally "Catch Hell Blues" are the aforementioned songs 9-12). "Catch Hell Blues" quickly became my favorite Stripes song ever and will really remind of you the older White Stripes album "De Stijl". But don't let my love of this 4 song block distract you from the rest of the album. The only "weak" part in my opinion are songs 3, 6, and 7. The bagpipe sounds like a good idea but I personaly hate those 2 songs.

If you are Stripes fan and love their older work you will love this album.

It's been almost two months now since Icky Thumps release and that time has not afforded the White Stripes newest any more favorable results. Let me first state that yes, I am a fan of the duo. However, with that said I do think that as a fan that does not mean they are immune to critisism. I will not just love "whatever" they (or Jack White) decides to put out.
I realise that these forums of feedback are usually fans who praise even though it is not warranted, and I just as much as you are always hoping for the best from our favorites but this White Stripes release does not add up for me.
I think the time has come for the group to stop worring about what their new "look" for the cover and current tour is going to be and concentrate more on getting back to the garage band idiology that started it all. In other words, bring back the guitar Jack. Yeah, "Bone Broke" and "Catch Hell" are where it's at, but "Conquest"?? Big mistake and entirely unlistenable. As is "You Don't Know What Love Is". I was so happy when the writer of the Village Voice made the comparison of this song with the one written by Bad Company called "Shooting Star". And the title track itself sounds much too similar to Rage Against The Machine's "Born As Ghosts".
Now to show that I am not being all "oh this is just someone who can't appreciate an artist branching out and trying something new" I will say that I think the tracks "Prickly Thorn" and "Slowly Turning Into You" are a couple of the Stripes best!
In the end however, I am dissapointed. It has not turned out to be the summer favorite of mine that I was hoping for. I am not turned off from the band, the prior releases from them with the exception of this one and "Get Behind Me" make up for any wrongdoing and I will continue purchase whatever they put out. Sincerely, Thumped.

The new white stripes delivers on every aspect of music enjoyment. A good number of old stripes style tunes along with some cool exploration of new sounds. Jack rips, meg lays it down. Get it!!

Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. I had to buy this album as soon as I heard "Rehab" just last month. I can't stop listening to this album. Every song is it's own stand-out. Buy this record if you love soul music and "smart" lyrics. I still can't believe Ms. Winehouse is only 23; you would think she was 43 when reading her lyrics or straight out of the the 1960's.

I couldn't agree more with Amin. Months ago, I saw her on late night TV and thought at the time: "Oh...this is interesting..." Unlike 100's of forgetable performers on TV, she stuck out like...well, like a sore thumb. The "Rehab" song was instantly memorable. But that's just the appetizer. I heard her sing "Back to Black" on Youtube at the SXSW in Austin with just her astonishing voice and an acoustic guitar and I could not believe what I was hearing. Who else sounds like that? Lauryn Hill perhaps...but Amy is Dinah Washington without the godawfull strings, Sara Vaughn without the sappy arrangements. The big question to me is not whether she'll be a big star. She already is. But will she live long enough to make more great music? OTOH, she's already "opening", if you will, as a kind of flawed diamond, certainly not squeaky clean- so she's not going to shock anybody if she falls face down in the gutter...but still, I'm hoping to hear more amazing stuff from this gifted young woman for years to come.

After hearing her Rehab single,I knew that there had to be something else good on the album. Was I right. A nice mix of tunes. You Know I'm No Good,Back To Black and Wake Up Alone are the other standouts. Not typically my style of music,but this caught my eye. After one listen those songs stood out. I'm sure after listening to more,I will like more. If you are new to her like me and don't know whether to get it,I would recommend it. Very unique style. I give it 4 stars and may raise it a few after a few more listens. Check it out...

Given the chart success of their Grammy-winning country single "Who Says You Can't Go Home," it's no surprise Bon Jovi upped the ante by recording an entire album paying homage to Nashville. The buzz around this album was it was Nashville influenced. I can't say if I actually agree with that or not. The songs may be more mello but all I know is the album did not disappoint. In addition to Make a Memory and Lost Highway, Any Other Day and Last Night are excellent!

Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel. --Denise Sheppard

I am glad Kelly got this album produced. It speaks to the hurt that so many of us feel when love goes wrong. The lyrics linger in my head and I identify with about 10 of the songs. I can feel what she must have felt as she wrote the words because they are my emotions too.

Clive Davis had no idea what he was talking about when he told kelly they record wasnt gonna be a smash. Its been out for 3 weeks and it has sold just shy of 500,000 copies(which she will hit next week making MD Gold in only four weeks!) This cd has no filler songs on it. Every song is a hit.
From the Guitar roaring songs like "Hole","Haunted","Never Again", and "Judas" to the beautiful ballads like "Be Still","Sober","Maybe", and "Irvine" and the pop rock favs "How I Feel","One Minute","Dont Waste Your Time", and "Yeah". This cd is amazing! It proves that Kelly Clarkson isnt just a world class singer but and amazing writer, Clarkson wrote all 13 songs on the cd. This cd is a must have for any pop/rock lover! Kelly Clarkson has out done herself once again.

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Wow, I can't believe how many reviews are negative on Vol. 3. It rocks! Maybe it's because I'm more of a Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne fan but it has all of their trademarks--strong rhythm section, great production, rock steady drumming (and just okay lyrics). I would stack Vol. 3 up against Petty's Full Moon Fever (produced by J. Lynne)--if you love that album, you'll love Vol. 3. If your feet aren't tapping to this music you just don't love rock'n'roll.

I always loved George Harrison and seeing him in the DVD that came with this compilation was awesome. How can you go wrong with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison? They are having such fun and enjoyed playing together - it comes across in the music.

Three years ago I snapped up "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3" from a used CD bin, and I couldn't believe my luck, as both Traveling Wilburys CDs had been out of print for many years, for some incomprehensive reason, as those albums are a treasure of American music. Now finally comes the long-overdue restauration of that.

"The Traveling Wilburys Collection" brings the 2 albums, with bonus tracks, and a DVD. "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 1" (10 tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks, 42 min.) brings the beginning olf this super-star band, starting off with the irresitable "Handle With Care", originally contemplated as a George Harrison B-side for one of his "Cloud Nine" album singles. There is hardly a bad track on here: "Last Night", "Tweeter and the Monkey Man", and my all-time favorite "End of the Line" are among the highlights. "Margarita" is the only weak track. The (previously unreleased) bonus tracks, "Maxime" and "Like a Ship" are outstanding. "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3" (11 tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks, 42 min.) even goes one better, in my book. From the stellar opener "She's My Baby", to "Inside Out", "Where Were You Last Night" to the rousing and irresistable "Wilbury Twist", it is just magic. The bonus tracks "Nobody's Child" and a cover of "Runaway" are quite nice, but not as good as the regular album tracks. I know that many music fans are not as fond of "Volume 3" due to Roy Orbinson not being part of it, but for me, it is the better, tighter, sounding album of the two. I absolutely love "Volume 3".

The DVD starts with a fascinating 40 min. documentary of the band's early days, bringing a blow-by-blow visual account of how most of the first album's tracks came about. What strikes is how great all those super-stars got along, egos were clearly checked at the door. It also brings the 5 videos the band did for the 2 albums, nice but not as good as the documentary. The liner notes are not that great, primarily a fictional history of the Wilburys, but no lyrics of the songs or detailed recording details. But that is a minor quible. This collection is a terrific slice of Americana, whose reissue was LONG overdue. Essential in every way.

While I have never really considered myself a big Maroon 5 "fan", I have really enjoyed "Songs About Jane" and was looking forward to this release. Upon hearing the first single "Makes Me Wonder", I was wondering 'should I even bother taking the chance'. Honestly, I wasn't going to buy it, but iTunes had a great deal with presale concert tickets, so I took the plunge.

After more than half a dozen listens, this album has REALLY grown on me. I was hoping for something like "Songs About Jane", but this was something really different, yet distinctly Maroon 5. I have heard the comparisons to some of the smooth-rock/pop icons from the 70's and 80's, and I totally agree, in a good way. This album is a bit more Pop than SAJ, every song still carries the signatures of Maroon 5; groovy bass lines, a good hook, angst vs. love lyrics, and beautiful harmony between the lyrics and music. Of course not every song is gold, but I think there is something here to satisfy a variety of casual and die-hard fans.

There's enough here that I finally have to declare myself a true fan.

This is my pick for best new album of 2007. To date at least. Initially, I wasn't a big fan, certainly didn't think much of the first single, but I love it now! The album has it's trademark up tempo songs and not to forget, the wonderful ballads of love and heartache.

Standouts for me are "Back at your Door", a cruisy, bluesy awesome track, "Not Falling Apart", "Little of your Time", "Can't Stop", "Until You're Over Me" (bonus track on Australian release) "Infatuation" (another bonus track) and I have to say, "Makes Me Wonder" has really grown on me too.

There is a song here for everyone to relate to, and a song for every mood. I haven't stopped listening to it since it's release. I love it!

Do yourself a favour and buy it :-)

Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Zwan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. California musicians Ginger Reyes (bass) and Jeff Schroeder (guitar) complete a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski

I liked and still like the Smashing Pumpkins with their albums Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, which were hits and had their own sound. So when I picked Zeitgeist up, I was anxious of what they would sound like. The result wasn't all bad, just different. Billy Corgan seemed to change his guitar from piercing riffs and blazing solos to a kind of muddy "wall of sound". Also the absence of James Iha and D'Arcy Wretzky is definitely noticeable.

1.Doomsday Clock- One of their first singles, it's pretty catchy and rocks hard. 8/10
2.7 Shades Of Black- The verses in this song are pretty catchy, but the rest of the song gets kind of repetitive. 7/10
3.Bleeding The Orchid- An OK song, mellower than the first two, but not really a standout. 6/10
4.That's The Way (My Love Is)- My favorite song off the album, it's extremely catchy and has a more upbeat melody than the rest of the album's seemingly darker tone. 10/10
5.Tarantula- The album's first single, it has a faster beat and catchy lyrics. 8/10
6.Starz- This song is almost eerie and has a dark tone. Not really a standout. 6/10
7.United States- Billy Corgan dives into politics with this song, which has a cool jamming second half, but is kind of boring in the beginning. 7/10
8.Neverlost- A very good song with a light melody, it's a breath of fresh air from the muddy guitars. 8/10
9.Bring The Light- This song has kind of an atmospheric feel to it, but gets repetitive pretty fast. 7/10
10.(Come On) Let's Go!- This song has catchier guitar than a lot of the other songs, and leaves more of a lasting impression than "Bleeding The Orchid" or "Bring The Light". 8/10
11.For God And Country- The last two closing songs kind of fade out and leave more to be desired, like this one. Overall just boring. 5/10
12.Pomp And Circumstances- This is better than the previous song, because it has an oddly light melody and sounds like something off of Mellon Collie. 7/10

Overall, Zeitgeist has some songs that kind of blend together, but the ones that stand out are worth it. The Pumpkins' comeback was definitely interesting, whatever way you put it.

Upon first listen, I was disappointed. Not much on this album reached out and grabbed me as "This is Pumpkins!!!", but it did enough so to keep me listening. After a few spins through the album and a review of the rest of the SP catalog, it began to grow on me. In all, it is a good listen, but may not satisfy some die hard fans or casual listeners.

I suspect several singles will get airplay, including "Tarantula", "That's the Way (My Love Is)", and "Bring The Light". "(Come On) Let's Go!", which would be MTV bound if they still played videos, is among my favorites along with others that seem to have all the SP elements, are "7 Shades of Black" and "Bleeding the Orchid".

If you want something a little different, but catchy and upbeat, sample "Starz". There is obviously some political content amongst the tracks, like the anthem "Unites States" and "God and Country", but Corgan's lyrics are so fractured that it's easy just to enjoy it for the music, or make up your own meaning! (Sorry Billy, I just ain't buyin, so stop tryin)

I am really enjoying this album now, and find myself far less boring and depressing than the odd ballads of Mellon Collie. I'd say this album is a good blend of Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie while showing some growth in most elements, if not lyrics.

I became a pumpkins fan at the height of their popularity, i.e., right after Mellon Collie came out. More specifically, I saw the Tonight, Tonight music video and was really impressed. I'm still impressed with what the band accomplished. Their massive hits like Today & 1979 are just as great to listen to now as they were over a decade ago. I could sit and listen to their first four albums from start to finish and never get bored. Then came Machina! It has a few good songs, but nothing a non-fan would ever want to listen to. This album is even worse, but it has one song - Tarantula - that a non-fan might want to hear. Sad to say, but Billy needs another major shift in his sound. He also needs to pump up the sound and drown out his voice. Maybe he always sounded this bad, but we couldn't tell in the early days because the awesome music drowned out his high-pitched voice. My great dissapointment is that there are no songs here that a fan can privately enjoy, the type of song like Mayonaise or Muzzle that the fans can love but won't get much radio play. Tarantula is the only song of quality here, and it's for the radio - not the fans. For that, I am greatly disappointed.

    Moving up to a major label has hardly lifted Interpol's spirits. This is a good thing. Even with the twisted Wild Kingdom album cover and bassist Carlos Dengler's unexpected Wild West makeover, on its third studio album the black-clad New York quartet still sounds inflexibly menacing, grasping tighter than ever to its doomy post-punk influences and delving further into frontman Paul Banks's emotional unrest. Everything sounds a little bigger and brighter, sure, but at their core songs like "Rest My Chemistry" and "Wrecking Ball" are heroically sinister, goaded on by prickly riffs and slow-bleeding rhythms. The group briefly jumps to life on the buzzing "Heinrich Manouver" and exhibits an unexpected dash of humor on "No I in Threesome," but it's the closing "Lighthouse" that best defines the set--a late-night lament that simply steals away into the dark. --Aidin Vaziri

    Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol and undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In Threesome" is an upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship propelled by Carlos D's peerless bass melody while the tenderly observant "Pace Is the Trick" proves that the band are still the masters of the dramatic - check the painful pause right before the sinfully satisfying return of Sam's thundering drums and Daniel's ringing lead guitar. The band's impressively seductive evolution is obvious all over the record, but never more so than on tracks like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and on the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My Chemistry." While Daniel is understandably proud of the song he cautions against reading too much autobiography into its lyrics. "We always leave the interpretation to the listener," he says. "I mean, you shouldn't watch a movie for the first time listening to the director's commentary!"

    Our Love to Admire closes with "The Lighthouse," a funereal dirge that is among the most unexpected and memorable songs ever recorded by the band. Almost entirely percussion-free, the song is constructed around Daniel's mournful guitar and Paul's sparten lyrics. Not only is it one of their finest moments to date, it provides the album's most goose-bump inducing moment, the very same reflex shivers that make Interpol live shows such an exhilarating experience. As the very last song the band recorded for the album it was, they say, the hardest to play. The hypnotic guitar part was played on a 50-year-old guitar that had toxins on the strings, providing Daniel with a blistering and painful sensation in his fingers. The band weren't even sure the track would make it out of the studio, but once they heard Paul's remarkable vocals they were floored. The song - and the album - doesn't so much end as it bleeds to a close with a long, echoey coda filled with feedback and strings. A fittingly dramatic end to a stunning and emotional journey. Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged with a new spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of all, a new confidence.

    a major let down, from one of my favorites,
    so close, if they would of just inched a bit closer to that edge,
    and they did on a few numbers "pioneer" is great, as is "the lighthouse" and "wrecking ball",
    sadly the rest ranges from average to very subpar
    "threesome" "h. manuver" "chemistry" and "mammoth" are very by the numbers interpol
    the remaining 4 are total clunkers...
    i will go and see them on this tour, as they are great live (except at festivals and larger shows) but i will pray and hope the rebound from this
    honestly, i am not trying to slag on them, but it makes me so sad i wanted this to be so good

    All of these people who are complaining are either deaf, dumb, or both. This is a killer album, and every single song is excellent. This is a great band, and I don't care who they sound like, or who sounds like them...neither Joy Division, nor She Wants Revenge are as good of a band as Interpol. Yeah, I said it!!!

    This is my first Interpol album, and I am amazed!!! I knew that they were verry simulur to Joy Division because that's what all of the critics and fans say...but even though they may not be the absolutel most original band in the world.......I really like what they do.     Interpol has a good thing going. They are a great band that has their own little niche which allows them to be somewhat popular while remaining true to their indie roots.

    With their third album, Our Love to Admire, Interpol once again molds and shapes their sound which they crafted on their first album, Turn on the Bright Lights. With their second album, Antics, they took a small departure from their sound on the first album, but it was a good departure. They put their vocals forward and made their sound more clear, which allows them to sound more polished. With Antics though, Interpol didn't sound as raw or underground. Depsite this, they still retained the same feeling in their "doom" music; in other words they were still just as entertaining as the first album, except maybe on the some different levels.

    This album sounds the most different from the last two. I think this is primarily due to the fact that they have changed record labels; from Matador to Capitol. This allows the band to have access to better recording equipment, techniques, etc. Because of this their album seems to sound a little over produced in my opinion. They seem to have paid more attention to detail, but in a different way. Each layer of instruments seem to be on their own plane. They don't seem to mesh or blend the same as in other albums. I think that that was one of the things that Interpol was very good at: layering. They used to build rhythems and rhythems on top of each other, providing the listener with a very rewarding experience.

    This album sounds somewhat dull because of this lack of layering. The reason for the lack of layering, I think, stems from the fact that the drums and bass do not play as big of a part in this album as previous ones. The guitars and vocals seems to be in the forefront, which is fine in the case of the vocals, but not necessarily with the guitars. The rhythems are noticably simplistic and somewhat boring actually, especially when the bass and drums are not there to enforce them. When it comes down to it, Interpol, I think, cannot be a guitar driven band. Instead, I think they need to combine their creative efforts like the previous albums. Carlos' bass lines were absolutely stunning and really rather interesting. In fact, that, in combination with Sam's drumming, was one of the reasons that I listened to Interpol. In this album Carlos seems to actually play like a bass player, which is rather disappointing. There are some great lines that he creates, but they are hidden in the background due the recording techniques. Instead of being in the forefront like previous albums, he is sadly in the background, like almost all modern rock albums. As for Sam's drumming, there is no reason that I can think of for such a show.

    Some of the parts, especially bass and drums, sound "phoned in," but this is still a good album nontheless. It is great to hear how Interpol explores their sound further without completely leaving it behind or changing it, like say The Strokes, which have sadly washed away and basically disappeared. The words are just as good and the songs are still overall catchy, especially like "The Heinrich Maneauver."

    If you are an Interpol fan like myself, then this is recommended (though not extremely high) to complete the collection.

    Easy Tiger, Ryan Adams's ninth solo studio album, is a return to form in every way. He's already shown that he can bash out three albums in one year--not to mention the hilarious fake hip-hop records posted for free on his Web site--and that he can sound as much like the Grateful Dead as he wants to in his constant subsequent touring. Backed once again by the Cardinals, Adams synthesizes and refines his approach to smooth, gorgeous country-pop. "Tears of Gold" is one of the best songs he's written in ages, while "Two" is a slowly percolating, sweet little number that recalls Sean Hayes in its soulful folksiness (someone named Sheryl Crow accompanies Adams on vocals). One of the greatest treats of this languorous, twangy album is the subtle ways that genre gets played with. "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" is the best Harvest outtake Neil Young never wrote, while the treated, synth-sounding guitar solo on the druggy, chooglin' "Halloweenhead" sounds like it comes straight out of Journey. And "The Sun Also Sets" sounds more than a little like Rufus Wainwright covering Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines." It bursts with enough melodrama as to border on musical theater. But, as is clear on these songs of love and loss, Adams has always been at his best when giving into his most mellow, dramatic side. --Mike McGonigal

    I think there are really only two kinds of pop music CDs these days. There are the ones you listen to only once or twice, maybe downloading the single good song to your iPod or computer; then there are others that grow stronger, sweeter, and more necessary each time you play them. Gold was that way; Cold Roses was that way; so was Jacksonville City Nights. I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful--the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams.

    Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention.

    I am middle aged and grew up listening to lots of music. Every morning when I was getting ready for school I would play "the constant three" on my record player (yep, record player): Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and B.B.King live at Folsom Prison. I don't know at what point in time I got turned onto Ryan Adams but I do know that I fell in love with Cold Roses a couple years back and told everyone I know about it. So I picked up Easy Tiger at Starbucks and I was astonished that I had not made this connection before. Ryan Adams sounds like a new Neil Young. Like Neil young sounded to me when I first started to listen to him 35 years ago. He writes great songs, he sings them with an emotional honesty and a slight twang, he means to get his song across, he wants to entertain too, and rock and roll and get it out. Easy Tiger is easily one of the best out there this year and will hold up, as Neil Young has, for years and years to come.

    I've been trying for years to nail down who Ryan Adams reminds me of, and I've finally figured it out: Van Morrison. Both are roots-bound almost to the point of being revivalists, both are notoriously temperamental, and both are wildly, erratically prolific, sometimes to a fault; yet both are unquestionably geniuses (almost unarguably so, much to the chagrin of their detractors).

    So what does this analogy have to do with a review of "Easy Tiger?" To put Ryan Adams's new album in perspective, it would be the equivalent of Van Morrison's "Moondance." It is the first record that comes across as being almost conservative in its polished professionalism. If you're a Van fan who hated "Moondance" because its warm, relaxed, pastoral vibe felt like a "sellout" after the wild abandon of Them and the heady experimentalism of "Astral Weeks" (and I'm sure there were more than a few people of that opinion at the time), then likewise, "Easy Tiger" is going to sound too safe, too pat. But if you think "Moondance" is a beautiful masterpiece, then you may well love "Easy Tiger."

    This is the album where Ryan Adams sobers up, bears down, and actually turns out an album of "all-killer, no filler" (arguably the first since "Heartbreaker"). And if that comes at the expense of the roughness and raggedness that has accompanied his best work to this point, then so be it. But ten years down the road (if Ryan Adams keeps getting songs like "When the Stars go Blue" covered by enough mainstream artists to make him a mainstream artist himself), my money is on this album being considered as one of his true classics.

    In a way, it's almost a career summation up to this point. It has the acoustic front-porch "Heartbreaker" vibe on "These Girls," the lush "Gold"-ballad feel on "Two, and "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" the "Demolition"-style late-night laments of "Everybody Knows and "The Sun Also Sets," the atmospheric "Love Is Hell" angst of "Off Broadway," the "Rock and Roll" crunch on "Halloweenhead," the jam-band "Cold Roses" sound on "Goodnight Rose," the "Jacksonville City Nights" countrypolitan of "Tears of Gold," and to make it complete, "Pearls On a String" and "Two Hearts" even harken back to his Whiskeytown days.

    In fact, this album plays almost like a Ryan Adams Greatest Hits album that, like a good hits comp, manages the trick of being summative without being disjointed or haphazard. And like a good compilation, these songs are all keepers. That said, this album is a grower. It took a few weeks before the songs really began to take shape, but from that point on, the album got better and better with each listen. If this is what being sober means, here's hoping Ryan can stay on the straight and narrow from here on out and have a later-day career as interesting and rich as Van Morrison's.

    Upon my first listen to this album I could not finish it...the songs were a little too twangy and Adams' voice was as well. My taste is more on the rock side of things, and this album falls definitely more on the country side.
