This the first time I've heard the group & I thought it was pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Nice and Slow.......2007-03-09

Just what I expected. The music is easy and sexy. I love it.

3 out of 5 stars Pieces of a Dream is good but forgettable........2007-02-04

I have always had mixed feelings about this band. They are very good musicians. There songs are romantic and relaxing. Everything you would expect from a good band. The problem is that at the end of the evening, you can not remember anything about what you just heard. It all just flows thru you and then it gone.

4 out of 5 stars Love his Keys...........2007-01-16

They have been around for a while in many different forms. They also change up their direction. I like that. Keep it coming "Pieces Of a Dream"!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best 70's porn film soundtrack ever.......1999-11-10

In the late Seventie she became the godmother of rap, founding Sugar Hill Records, the first rap label. But before that, Sylvia recorded this nasty gem, taking double entendres to new highs. "Pillow Talk" was the hit, with lyrics about having to "borrow your pants some cold and lonely night". But there were other winners: in "Didn't I", she coos "at last you know I'm not margarine - but I am a high-priced spread!"...and in "Had Any Lately?", well, she mixes a come-on with a Vietnam protest song. The best track, though, is "Not on the Outside". You can almost get a contact high from this song: all the musicians play like they've smoked some serious herb while Sylvia dedicates the song to her dead songwriting partner - on whom she admits changing the song to her version now that he's gone. She even plays acoustic (or, as she says, "a-cue-stick) guitar on the track, and finishes the song in a self-orgy of moans. Classic.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun with Doris, Rock and Frank DeVol's orchestra.......2007-07-23

If you enjoy hearing the "Pillow Talk" score while youre watching the movie, this box set will hold many delightful surprises. Some of the music that you barely hear under the dialogue is fabulous. My only complaint is the music under the "moment of truth" (when Doris discover's Rock's real identity) is missing. However, the second CD with radio snippets and Rock singing the songs make up for this omission. And the book included with the CDs has some rare photos and promo art.

4 out of 5 stars Bear Family boxes up one great movie..........2005-09-03

...and it wasn't even a musical! A stunning job from Germany's Bear Family compiling background music, songs and entertainment fluff from one of Doris Day's premiere comedies, 1959's "Pillow Talk". One of the biggest grossing movies of its year, "Pillow Talk" never really had a proper soundtrack release, which is a shame because Frank DeVol's scoring is jaunty fun. Doris herself released a few singles from the film, but, puzzlingly, they failed to chart(Rock Hudson also recorded the title track, which didn't crack the Hot 100 either!). It's all included here, as well as radio spots and a big glossy booklet full of photos and the Oscar-winning screenplay.

The Chicago-born vocalist Miki Howard burst on the scene in 1987 and showed a lot of promise with her hits "Come Share My Love," and "Love Under New Management." She even had the chops to play Billie Holiday in the movie Malcolm X. This radio-friendly release is Howard's first record since her 2001 CD, Three Wishes. Co-produced by smooth jazz saxophonist Kim Waters and Chris "Big Dog" Davis, Howard's Aretha Franklin/Mavis Staples-influenced vocals update ten '70s R&B Quiet Storm classics, from the Tina Turner-inspired Ann Pebbles hit "I Can't Stand the Rain" and The Captain and Tennille's "Do That To Me One More Time" to Natalie Cole's "Inseparable" and Marlena Shaw's "Go Away Little Boy." All told, Howard's husky contralto still coos and grooves, as evidenced by the title track originally made by Sylvia Robinson, and Boz Scaggs's Blue-eyed soul classic, "Lowdown." Welcome back, Miki! --Eugene Holley, Jr.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed Results For Miki...Whew!.......2007-02-22

First of all, I'd like to thank Shanachie Records for giving Miki Howard a chance to record again, but they need to STOP releasing these lame overpriced 10 track CDs (an EP for that matter!) of tired remakes. And the production value/quality on these EPs are sorely LACKING. The whole 'Remake Classic Song' concept was been worn out, and most people will agree that these CDs shouldn't cost more than $9.99! (Glad I got a cheap used copy...and I re-sold it ASAP! LOL)

Now, as for Miki Howard, she was ONCE one of the most powerful & soulful vocalists during the mid 1980's (during her Atlantic/Giant era), but her once mighty pipes have since lost it's fire. Some of the songs (those that don't require much vocally!) are perfect for Miki (check out 'Which Way Is Up ?', 'Lowdown', 'Pillow Talk', and a few others), but she just doesn't (or maybe she can't) bring IT to tracks like 'Inseperable' (Natalie Cole has NOTHING to worry about!), 'Just Don't Want To Be Lonely' (The Main Ingredient is now pissed!), 'Misty Blue' (BOTH Dorothy & Monica are nodding in disbelief!).

In closing, I expected much more from Miki Howard, but she is a DIFFERENT singer than the one we all remember from almost 20 years ago. If you MUST buy this CD, please listen to the tracks FIRST, and try to find a low-priced used copy.

2 out of 5 stars SHANACHIE RECORDS LABEL PROBLEM.......2006-11-20

I'VE NOTICED THEY ONLY HAVE 10 SONGS ON MOST OF THE RELESED CDs.THIS IS ANNOYING AND STINKS FROM THIS RECORD LABEL, THEY NEED TO INCLUDE MORE TRACKS ON THEIR CDs .THIS CD IS LISTENABLE, BEST TRACKS ARE LOWDOWN AND PILLOW TALK, THERE IS A LOT OF SYNTHESIZED MUSIC IN THE BACKROUND OF OTHER TRACKS,MAKING IT SOUND LIKE KAROKE. THE SAME IS ALSO NOTED ON THE NEW GLEN JONES CD.

5 out of 5 stars HOT!!! BRILLIANT & DEEPLY SOULFUL~BRAVO MIKI !!!.......2006-11-14

Miki Howard is a rare artist and captured in this tremendous set at the peak of her amazing vocal magnificence and deeply passionate skilled way of emoting like nobody else around can...every song is taken to a new dimension and will give complete pleasure to anyone who enjoys a great voice!!! For anyone who has enjoyed these classics over the years, do not miss this stunning and beautifully arranged collection of classics...Miki is riveting and does each standard as they have never been done before and you will fall in love with each one of these classics all over again and with the incredibly talented Miki Howard who is THE voice of her generation!!! Bravo Miki and thank you for this wonderous musical treat...it is the finest and "Which Way Is Up" being the wild funky jam that it is should be released as a single and should go all the way to the top and hopefully Miki will win a much deserved "Grammy Award" this time!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just Awesome!!!!.......2006-09-26

I've always been a big fan of Miki's and I must say this release is some of her best work since she recorded Miki does Billie Holiday. I heard her sing "Inseperable" in person a few months ago, but to hear it on this release just blows me away and I can't stop listening to it!! Miki is and always have been one of the top singers in R & B and jazz; a true DIVA!! You Go, Gurl!!! and I will be seeing you at the Blue Ribbon.

4 out of 5 stars It's Really Good To Hear Miki :).......2006-09-20

I jsut purchased this CD and I am thinking that Miki is sounding really good!! Her song selection is good as well. the only thing I will say is that I am looking for new/original music from Miki Howard. Her style is soooo unique that when she covers a song, it ultimately sounds different. She makes it her own. But, I would love to here her sing orignal music like "Baby, Be Mine" or "Not Like You Do" (with Norman Brown) etc.

If you like Miki howard (like I do) and you don't mind artists covering music (doing remakes) then this is the CD for you!!!

Buy it!!

PS. She does a bang up job on " Inseparable" and "Misty Blue" ....AWESOME!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sylvia Robinson..........2005-09-17

For all interested parties, "Sweet Stuff" and then "The Next time that I see you" are worth the purchase alone! I was lucky enough to find this disk at a local record store and purchased it at the domestic price of $11.99. I would suggest that you at least try to go that way before plunking down major money for it. For me, I play this music, I close my eyes and it's 1974..1975..1976. Music of my life, and I very much appreciate Sylvia, she gave me a picture of what love could be (evil smile and a wink!). I'll always appreciate her music! 5+ stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, The Super Bad Sexy Funk Soul of Sylvia ! ! !.......2001-02-14

Sweet and Funky Soul Fans... move over... Sylvia's back...

Finally a compilation of Sylvia's sweet 'n spicy soul hard hitters.

This is the type of stuff you expect to find on those pricey non-domestically available imports - - in fact, that's how I got back into Sylvia... hearing Private Performance, Next Time That I See You and If You Get The Notion on various Japanese '70s funk and soul compilations. On one, one of the tracks was actually lifted off an old beat up crackly 45, but it was soooooooooo good, them tingly li'l crackles didn't matter ! ! ! Now finally, Sylvia's freaky "Millie Jackson move over" funky love makin' tracks are back. - - What's so wild about her tracks is you REALLY feal like you're back in the '70s (remember those old K-Tel joints ?) - - some of the tracks have this low budget quality to them at the outset, but between Sylvia and the orchestrations they're bumping mad ! ! !

Check out the freaky fuzzy guitar solo on Next Time, or the funky bass solo in Sweet Stuff, and the way Sylvia comes back in with that sexy, "Now that ain't so bad after all !" (Word of advice guys incidentally... if you're listening to this stuff while riding the subway and prone to singing out loud, watch gittin into those ffffffff... ooomph Daddy, Aiii yaiii yaiii yaiii's out loud, or well... interesting folk might decide to accompany you !)

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Can We Pillow Talk?.......2004-07-16

"A sexy, sultry collection of 'between the sheets' grooves" is how this one is described on the cover, and it matches every word step by step.

This one is meant for the Chillout/Downtempo crowd with a lean towards a little 'Loungy" goodness. I'll outline my favorite gems on the disc but please understand that every track is a good one!

1.) Big Sand -- Hardkandy

* This is one of those tracks that you'll hate to hear end. Wait until the 1:25 point when the warm and sexy guitar takes you away!

* The overall groove is funky, but still soothing and inviting.

* The female vocals are passionate and convincing and add to the full 'sexiness' of the song without taking anything away from the other elements.

Prepare to hit 'repeat' on this one, many times! A perfect mood setter for the rest of the CD.

4.) The Sin And The Fear -- Mangataot

* True Lounge sound from start to finish.

* Organic blend of the groove and 'full-on chilled out' feeling.

* Very breathy female vocals....great touch.

From the first few chord changes, I was hooked on this one!
If your head's not spinning when this one's done, you're not doing it right!

5.) Walking In Space -- Smooth

* Striking 'vocoder' vocals play against the 'nu-school' chillout groove...nicely done.

6.) While You Sleep -- Zagar

* Very romantic and passionate track

* Great samples and scratches are a great addition to the track, not a destraction from it.

* Electronica meets Lounge and their dance is filled with sultry, sexy goodness.

My overall rating for this one is 3.5 stars. This is a nice stand alone CD, but if you can purchase the next CD in the series, ReLounge...you'll be the better for it!

From start to finish, this offering stands head and shoulders over most wanna-be Chillout/Lounge CD's.

Get this CD soon, and get on with the pillow talk!
