Frogg Café is really shaping their sound closer to excellence with their third album. Their previous effort "Creatures" was also very good but this one simply is a masterpiece.

While the band is mostly compared to The Flower Kings, I think there's more to it in their music. Fusion parts which can be heard very often, the Zappa-esque psychedelic approach, the atonal and sometimes dark melodies not unlike King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator, some folky tunes in the best Jethro Tull tradition, and some Yes, Gentle Giant, and Genesis influences and all these combined with great skill are some of the elements what make this album a feast for all retro-proggers. With this album, I'm sure they won't need to hide behind the scene's famous bands anymore, because I think that they are already one of them.

Wait! I'm not finished. The band cleverly incorporates violin, flute, and trumpet into their sound. And these contributions are not like a guest spot. They can be heard throughout the album very often. One thing that caught my ear was that when the violin comes to the front, the music gets some tendencies to master Jean Luc Ponty. But IMHO the trumpet steals the show and is one of the reasons what make this band so fascinating. Does the name "Miles Davis" tell you people something?

This is not pure prog! I'd rather call it as prog/fusion but it's more than that while preserving the prog roots. If you love prog, and have some tendency for fusion and jazz, then this is your album. Highly recommended for any prog rocker!!!

This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.

Written over the course of a month, Amy Cook's second album, The Sky Observer's Guide, is a strong albeit average album. Whereas Amy's first album was just her and her guitar, this album showcases her band: Nina Singh on drums, Brad Rice on guitar and Bobby Daniel on bass. Cook's songs have been featured on many television dramas, including Dawson's Creek, Veronica Mars, Laguna Beach and The L Word. Once learning this, I expected a cheerful, easy pop sound and was pleasantly surprised to get something entirely different.

Cook's voice is reminiscent of a softer Jenny Lewis with echoes of Mazzy Star and much more melancholy than anticipated. The album is effectively smooth, and, although there are a few more upbeat songs, overall, it is a softer listen. My only disappointment was that there were few specific songs that really stuck with me. Most are more suitable as background music, which makes sense that her music has been used as such.

However, the album finishes strong with my two favorites: "Pearl" and "Feathers To a Crown." I was hooked particularly by the lines: "These are hard times for dreamers/We are just pennies in a wishing well/We ain't going to buy/We ain't going to sell." Lyrics such as these show Cook's potential to go beyond music used for a few temporary moments during a television scene, and into something deeper, more meaningful and, thus, permanent.

this is must have. that is it. blood n fire always does it right. this one is a staple in my rotation regardless if I am on some new dancehall kick or foundation this is always a part of my life.

Blood & Fire has done it again. The best reggae label out there has put together another crucial selection of 70's DJ tracks. Classic works by U Roy, Big Youth and Dillinger, with a cut from one of my personal faves Trinity. However, the star of the show is the late great I Roy. I was a big fan of his work before, but he is simply dazzling on every track here. It helps that he's toasting over some Niney's greatest riddims and mind-bending dubs of the era ("Wolves & Leopards" by Dennis Brown, "Paymaster" by Gregory Isaacs, "Weeping" by Jr. Byles), but I Roy's versatility is unmatched and really shines through. From Rasta themes to early slackness stylee, he is head and shoulders above the rest. Overall, this is a great package (great liner notes, as always, by Steve Barrow), right up there with Blood & Fire's "If Deejay Was Your Trade". Fantastic sound quality. Blood & Fire is the simply best at restoring old cuts to their original glory. Highly recommended for those who wish to immerse themselves in reggae's Golden Era.

This album, with a quite bizarre conceptual theme for a rock album (mostly sung descriptions internet dating), turns out to be one of their best. The songs are mostly quite catchy; the guitar playing is impeccable; and the singing as stronger than ever.

I have followed Mecca Normal since their inception. Although occasionally flawed with atonal rants, their folk-punk has always been inspirational. Most albums have been a single guitar (somewhat similar to early Billy Bragg, but with greater virtuosity, edge and attitude) and one set of female vocals - with an occasional fill of piano and additional guitars. Nevertheless, their presence is more stirring than many of the best full scale rock bands.
