Solid Intro to the Series.......2005-04-06

Nova-Latino is one of a long line of nueva Bossa Nova cd's that has it's roots in... Germany. Much like Rio Lounge, maybe the Caipirinha series, Glucklich and of course Brazilectro and Brazilution, Nova-Latino is a series that's well known for deliver 2 discs of electronic bossa and nu-jazz bliss. Nova Latino's label is also known for a few other interesting compilations like "Ambient Lounge" and "Mystic Dreams". But be warned - the display here is incorrect as this is a double disc set.

This is the first one and it was a commendable compilation. It came out in (I believe) 2001 so it was around the time of Glucklich 4 (2000), Brazilectro II, Boss-A-Troniq II and maybe Break & Bossa 4. Despite the stiff competition it still had some solid tuens on it in additoin to the obvious carry-over. It starts out with Signor Rossi vs De-Phazz - De-Phazz being a Nova Latino favorite. The cut is a nice remix which sets the mood up great. Other highlights of the festively mixed first cd include Da lata's "Pra Manha" reworked, Shantel's Backwood, and even Hacienda's "Sabor" given a much needed remix. I mean, there was some great star power on this cd since you also had the 'safe' picks by Stratospheric and Nicola Conte with "Neon Carlita" and "Bossa Per Due", respectively. Meanwhlie CD2 doen't loose much steam, starting with a remix to Bebel's "Bananeira" (although I'll always love Joyce's version). That track's followed up with Thievery Corporation's "Samba Tranquille" and then Aromabar's "Little Brother", given a Mo Horizon's facelift. The song is a little strange to me, but what's most interesting is the clear S-Tone Inc. influence in the looped guitar rift - straight from the bridge in "Ainda Sonhar", a sweet track. You've also got some nice tracks on here by St. Germain, Marcel, Wei Chi and Ian Pooley. Again, safe tracks, but good tunes none the less.

At the end of the day, I'd certainly recommend this to anyone that wants a bit of a quality introduction to the nu-bossa genre. It is far from being original, and that's the knock I have to give it... more like 3.5 stars. Intuit (aka Supersempft)'s "O Preguicoso" and Nicola Conte's "Bossa Per Due" were woefully overplayed and Alex Gopher's "The Child" remix was a bit of a head scratcher to me, even though it was a nice club cut. But strong tunes like "Tu Estas Fatal" (hear the one on Caipirisima) made up for it. If you like this, definitely check out the rest of this series as Nova Latino actually started to go for more exclusive cuts in later volumes. Volume 3 is available on Amazon... it's just mispelled: "Novo Latino". BEFORE YOU BUY, be aware that there is a box set of volumes 1-4 available in Europe right now that is well worth the investment b'cause $27 is very steep for 2 discs when you can prob. get the box (8 discs) for like $37 including the exchange rate and shipping. ALSO - note that there is a volume 5 available. It probably will hit USA shores as an import in late spring/summer.

Very dissappointing....................2006-10-12

I was extremely dissappointed to hear this CD from the great Lisa Ono. The CD cover promises tunes done in the style of bossa nova, but there is NO bossa nova on this CD. It's hard to understand how she recorded great bossa nova for many years, and seems to have forgotten the rhythm of bossa nova. But some of her earlier recordings are truly great bossa classics.
