After a five-year absence, Apples in Stereo have returned with a sprawling and lush masterpiece. Their founding principle of the DIY approach to recording has remained in place, but the nearly 15 years of technological progress has made such ways of working yield significantly more robust sounds. Robert Schneider's songs have always harked back to the pop artistry of Brian Wilson and Jeff Lynne, as well as such near contemporaries as Pavement. New Magnetic Wonder offers a more lush sweep of sound. It's varied, dazzling, and full of surprises. There's the keyboard-based pop of "Same Old Drag," the hypnotic muscle of "Sunndal Song" (sung by drummer Hilarie Sidney, who's recently departed to work with her own band), and the sprawling, four-part "Beautiful Machine." Depending on who's listening and what song they're hearing, there are many different ways to describe this band. Ultimately, they gently demand that you take them on their own terms, rewarding handsomely all those who make the glorious plunge. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars Wonder indeed.......2007-07-24

The Apples in Stereo's newest release in five years, New Magnetic Wonder is far and away their most audacious and creative album to date. Drawing on other artists work, such as the Electric Light Orchestra, they produce a sound which is new and fresh, yet still decisevely Apples.

3 out of 5 stars Aside from the whiny vocals..........2007-07-14

There are some really good tracks here. The production and arrangements are terrific. But the thing that prevents me from giving this a higher rating is the lead vocalist. I don't know who he is (nor do I care), but most of the time his singing really tests one's sanity. It is very whiny, and at times he tries to come off like a poor man's John Lennon ("It's gonna be...alright"). Fortunately, later in the album he wisely uses studio trickery to distort his voice with electonic fuzz (which works). The 2 tracks the female singer appears on are excellent, but unfortunately she's ditched the band. So, if you don't mind the grating voice of the male singer, this is actually a pretty good album.

4 out of 5 stars Half great.......2007-04-21

Half of this CD is outstanding, the other half is just good. There are some songs that so obviously mimic the Beatles and ELO that you think there must be a joke in here you're missing. I don't mean just homages to these two bands...I mean, nearly direct rewrites of material from Magical Mystery Tour and Jeff Lynne's catalogue. I am reminded of XTC's side project (was it called Dukes of Stratosphere or something like that?) which also went out of its way to mimic. Having said that, a lot of it is quite enjoyable. When they're not aping Beatles/ELO, their other songs sound like a slightly poppier version of Pavement, and I like that sound. There's some great guitar work, good production, and catchy tunes throughout. And the reviewers who have complained about the short "interlude" songs seem to be completely missing the point. There's a reason they're called "interludes" and I think they add to the experience. Overall, this one is recommended, with some reservations about outright mimickry at times (sorry I mentioned "mimic" three times in this review, no obvious synonyms are coming to mind!!)

1 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype .......2007-04-17

Many reviews compare this CD to Beach Boys, ELO, XTC, Polyphonic Spree, Phil Spector Splendor...dont' believe the hype. I'm open minded beyond belief. Let's put it this way... I'm an album purchaser. I don't download one song from a cd...i have to have the entire album. The best thing about this CD is the cover. The CD often has good songs or instrumentals that last a minute in a half?! Apples in Stereo will always get good critic reviews but go try Of Montreal or ELO remasters instead. This cd is generic sounding and I really wanted to like it. Just check out the cool song titles and the awesome cover then, go listen to something else.

3 out of 5 stars Something new.......2007-03-31

I was excited to hear something a bit modern and unpredictable. Yet I did not totally vibe on the entire cd. The songs that I do like are awesome! I am happy I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Recording with Playful Musicians.......2006-08-16

Undoubtedly one of my favorite recordings in SACD format, I only wish there was video as well, because it would be great. These gentlemen truly understand the music and their improvisational skills are fantastic, as they're able to play along with each other and the audience, the latter which seems to be thouroughly ecstatic. Unfortunately this is not a hybrid recording, which means if you want to transfer it to a portable device or play it in your car, it requires tremendous effort.

3 out of 5 stars Stereo SACD, not Multichannel!.......2003-10-13

This is a great performance. My review is mostly based on the fact that this is a stereo SACD, not multichannel. I am learning more about SACD every day, but was very disappointed that it is only presented in stereo.

3 out of 5 stars "Too Many Notes...".......2002-11-29

That was Emperor Joseph's simple-minded estimation of any music he didn't understand in the Academy-Award winning movie "Amadeus." I never thought I would ever find music that would actually fit that description... until now.

If you think this is some sort of super-charged California Guitar Trio or a Narciso Yepes-type forray into flameco-guitar, forget it. That is not to say most every review you see here is wrong. In fact, they are all correct about these guys being virtuoso guitarists.

However, songs that consist almost entirely of 32nd and 64th notes are at first impressive, but very quickly become tiresome. And this isn't an album full of "songs" so much as it is a forty-some-odd-minute-long jam session featuring testosterone-fueled duels and improvs with a Flamecan flare.

So if you're a guitarist who thrills to the repeated use of the same techniques over and over for close to an hour, this is a great album for you. If you're a normal guy just trying to find some high-fi SACD pyrotechnics, maybe this is still for you. But if you're just someone looking to be entertained, this may disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, amazing, amazing.......2002-09-03

"Friday Night in San Francisco" is one of those rare CDs you'll listen to and just laugh out loud from sheer amazement at the virtuoso guitar work of Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco de Lucia. Here are three friends, all guitarists, who are clearly having the time of their lives showing off their astonishing instrumental skills and jamming together on, well, a Friday night in San Francisco back in the 1980s.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to this album by a cousin many years ago, and after having treated myself to it, I played it on at least a weekly basis for months. Far from getting sick of it eventually, I found myself noticing new things almost every time I played it. Of course it's wonderful to listen to yourself, but there is also a profound pleasure to be had in introducing a novice to the album. Watch their eyes widen and their jaw drop as they turn to you and say, "Who IS this? I gotta have this!"

All three men share composition credits on the album. "Mediterranean Sundance/Rio Ancho," the song that opens the album, is a Spanish-influenced piece that sends notes scattering like raindrops on a sunny day--the aural effect is one of sparkling light. Chick Corea's song "Short Tales of the Black Forest" gets a work-out here, and McLaughlin and DiMeola do it proud as they build the musical tension to an almost unbearable point before exploding into the heart of the song a minute or two into the piece. "Frevo Rasgado," an Egberto Gismonti piece, is a complex song which swings effortlessly back and forth between major and minor keys, and McLaughlin and DeLucia go along for the ride with a kind of manic joy in their playing.

The three men don't all play together until the final two songs. On "Fantasia Suite," a DiMeola composition, they follow the notes but go further into that realm where they are in their own little universe, egging each other on and on until the music reaches an almost sublime climax. On "Guardian Angel," much the same thing happens and it's a privilege to hear this kind of creative collaboration in action. If you haven't already, make room on your CD shelf for this outstandingly great album!

5 out of 5 stars SACD SUPERIOR to redbook CD.......2002-04-29

I own both, SACD and CD. The sound of the SACD is so much more clear, articulate, three dimensional. Before I got the SACD I hardly ever listened to the redbook as acoustically there wasn't much to distinguish it from the other pressings (even when played back on a Sony SCD-C555ES). Playback of the SACD offers such listening pleasure. I close my eyes and just listen to the great LIVE music. The playback experience will depend on the quality of your audiogear.

In 1968, keyboardist-composer Wendy Carlos released Switched-On Bach, her bestselling LP featuring baroque music performed on the Moog synthesizer. Carlos intended to spread the gospel of electronic classical music through this quirky release; instead, she sold more albums than Karlheinz Stockhausen could ever dream of, released a few follow-ups, and paved the way for Hot Butter's "Popcorn." Carlos has since become well known for more than just these wacky classical interpretations--she recorded the soundtracks to A Clockwork Orange and Tron and released new works--but the Switched-Ons are the goofy synthesizer recordings that most of us still remember.

No less than Glenn Gould proclaimed, "Carlos's realization of the Fourth Brandenburg Concerto is, to put it bluntly, the finest performance of any of the Brandenburgs--live, canned, or intuited--I've ever heard." We're not sure what he meant by that, but if you have half the enthusiasm Gould did for this music, check out this box set. All four of Carlos's baroque-gone-space-age LPs from the '70s are included here--Switched-On Bach, The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, Switched-On Bach II, and Switched-On Brandenburgs--completely remastered in all their stereophonic glory and containing bonus tracks (the fourth CD is even enhanced for use on your computer). The liner notes weigh in at around 150 pages, filled with photos and background information even on the evolution of Carlos's studio (you get the original LP notes in their entirety, too). The music? It's hilarious, absolutely riveting, and--whether Scarlatti, Bach, Handel, or Monteverdi--played successfully by Carlos and her battery of special effects. For the lover of the eclectic or the classical fan who knows how to let loose, this is a box set to get. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Masterpiece!.......2007-05-11

This collection is a treasured addition to our music library here at home, in part because I have long been a fan of the artist. Also, because we all enjoy the spin that Wendy puts on many of the classical works of the old masters of music. I heartily recommend this boxed set to any listener who wants to be delighted by the sounds of the Moog synthesizer, played in a masterful way by Wendy Carlos...

4 out of 5 stars Definitive, historical, all-in-one.......2007-03-04

If you've loved the Walter/Wendy Carlos recordings over the years, this is a great way to get them all in one place. If you are at all interested in the production process, this is a _must have_ item.

Some have complained about the discussion tracks at the end of some CDs; I guess I can see how some might find them annoying. For pure ambience, you'll want to program your CD player to not play them, or just rip these CDs and burn a new copy minus those tracks.

One minor complaint I have is that the Brandenburgs are scattered throughout. I don't think it should have been all that bad to just have some of them duplicated. But I do understand the rationale, including them as is on the albums where they appeared individually, and then only putting the rest on the actual Brandenburgs pair of CDs. Personally, I love being able to listen to all the Brandenburgs straight through, so again I just made new versions of CD for my own use with them all together in their original order.

And of course, these days so many people aren't even listening to their CDs on the CD player. The music is ripped and then played using an MP3 player, computer, or similar device. Making playlists for your preferred track arrangements obviates any of the above complaints.

Regardless, I think that the value of having an all-in-one collection of these classic electronic instruments and performances far outweighs any minor issues regarding one's opinion of the choice of production arranagement.

5 out of 5 stars Súper Colección.......2007-01-03

Una joya de arte, en su estuche y con un gran contenido de los primeros volúmenes de esta gran interprete.
Simplemente una gran colección para los fanaticos de Wendy

5 out of 5 stars Walter's best.......2006-06-09

I know record and CD covers have been reprinted to reflect that Walter goes by the name of Wendy now. But this is all his best stuff in one collection. If you never had "Switched-On Brandenburgs Vol. 1 & 2" on LP and didn't get them either on CD back in 1987, then this is your chance to get them along with bits from his other works. Also get his other masterpiece "By Request" and the soundtrack of the movie "A Clockwork Orange". That's all you need if you are a fan of 60's analog synthesizer classical music, which only Walter was doing at that time.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It All Over Again.......2005-08-03

When I heard the first piece from the first album as a young boy, I was completely hooked. I don't think Wendy could have picked a better song to start with. The power and expansiveness of the Sinfonia is surely what Bach must have heard in his head when he wrote it over 300 years ago.

Honestly, some of the music on these albums is so good you may never hear Bach, Handel, or Scarlatti the same way again.

When I saw this boxed set for sale, I purchased it with a little trepidation, unsure if it would live up to my memory of it and not sure what my wife or daughter would make of it. I'm glad I got it, though. It's a wonderful recording and the two bonus tracks are fun to listen to. In fact, I wish CDs had the same "commentary" tracks that DVDs have as I would have enjoyed hearing more about how this recording was put together.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kudo's for Wendy Carlos.......2007-01-16

Wendy Carlos does an excellent job of updating all of the Classical pieces on this CD, as well as on all of her other CDs. I originally had this on Open Reel Tape, and am really happy that she has ported it over to the CD format! All of the selections on this CD can only be termed as "stirring" and it is enjoyable to hear each time it is played.

5 out of 5 stars Difficulty in placing an order.......2007-01-04

Because I had difficulty navigating through the purchase process, I ended up receivibg two and I only wanted one. I gave one away. You need to review the purchase process and have a "done" or something to indicate that Amazon has received the purchase request and will act upon it. Or else I will find someone else with whom to do business!!!!

3 out of 5 stars interesting concept, skillful interpretation, but sounds very dated now.......2006-12-26

As a performance, the music here is fantastic, and considering the challenges of monophonic sythesizers it is very impressively and skillfully performed. That said, if like me you were born after electronic music became commonplace, this will sound incredibly dated. The problem is that the sound programming abilities of the first moogs were limited, so the sounds are not very fitting to the music, creating a slightly comical kitschy mock-futuristic effect. Part of this effect is the womp womp womp beep beep beep sounds that now sound corny. While interesting, it sounds very anachronistic and less evocative than real instruments. I think I'll go back to orchestral performances of classical music. I'll keep this in case I ever want to make a campy future film spoof. Wow, I sure said "sound " a lot. Well, this really is all about the sounds.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but. . ........2006-08-08

I have always enjoyed this album and Switched on Bach ever since they came out in LP form when I was young.
The thing that ruins the CD for me is the very last track on both albums, where Wendy discusses the making of the album, called Well-tempered experiments.
I think that is fun to listen to the first time you play it, but then it is obnoxious when you are playing it as you work around the house. Your home is filled with music, then suddenly, there is talking and some obnoxious noises. It just shouldn't be there.
And to do this to both albums is very disappointing. It is hard to ignore, as it is a 9 minute track!
I solved this by burning both albums onto another CD and eliminating the experiment tracks. But I would rather have the original CD's and eliminate those tracks.

4 out of 5 stars As good as I remembered it!.......2006-03-03

I heard "The Well-Tempered Synthesizer" when it was first issued; like many people I was stunned by the strange, beautiful sound created by a "machine". Then I read about the difficulty of making the recordings, which took tremendous time and thoughtfulness, and this made me appreciate the human element more than the technology.

Imagine someone who, to cook breakfast, designs a henhouse, raises chickens, gathers the eggs, grinds wheat to make bread, picks fresh strawberries...all for a breakfast that could be made more easily using traditional sources or methods. Pardon the clumsy metaphor, but this is what Carlos had done: giving me Bach, by creating a new kind of chicken to get to the egg.

The sounds one hears in this recording are not as sophisticated as more modern synthetic voices, but they are still pristine and haunting. There is a sort of lonely, cosmic emptiness to the sound, but this is not discomforting; in fact, the music triumphs over the strangeness that no human hand or throat moved during the process, except at the keyboard and the 747-cockpit looking control panel of the Moog synthesizer.
Having a CD of this music is a joy, and the music delights.

Rahsaan Patterson's Love in Stereo was the most exhilarating and, certainly, the most overlooked R&B release of 1999. It's confounding why an album so jubilant, so self-assured, and so unequivocally soulful didn't even garner a top 10 hit for the multitalented Patterson, who wrote, produced, and sang on all 12 of its inspired tracks. Laden with unforgettable hooks, blissful melodies, and fat, luscious grooves, the songs on Patterson's sophomore release reveal a reverence for the past, namely the glorious 1970s albums of Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, and Curtis Mayfield. But, crooning in a crystalline tenor, the native New Yorker creates a funky-yet-meditative sound that's all his own. Patterson mixes in gospel stylings ("The Day"), horn-driven funk à la Earth, Wind & Fire ("Any Other Love"), and political commentary ("Treat You Like A Queen," which speaks to the issue of domestic violence), while conveying a sentiment sorely lacking in much of today's monotonous R&B playing field: pure musical uplift. --Sylvia W. 5 out of 5 stars A very strong Stive Wonder Influence.......2007-06-07

This is the only album I have of his but, I think it might be his best. The reason I have not run out to buy his other cd's is because, some of his songs are the same from one album to the next but, he is still a good artist. An example of this is, Get Here on this album and Where you Are on the last, same song! also two songs on his After Hours album, So Hot and Burnin same song!. Ok on a positive note, the song writing is top notch and......

4 out of 5 stars A Man that can really sing and write songs........2007-03-01

I finally bought this CD and I really like it. He is a good singer and the music compliments each song. He is sooo under-rated and I can't believe why. I would love to see him in Concert. He songs are really soothing and funky. I hope he will be around a long time bring us this good music. We need good male singers that can sing and peform without taking off their clothes to get attention. His album should have had more publicity.

Soulful, pop, rock and more rolled up into one. There is nothing more I can say about Rahsaan Patterson's work other than if you don't have his CD's you are missing out on some great music. Ten stars, change the rating system.

3 out of 5 stars Ehhhhh, It's okay. .......2006-06-06

I have to confess. As steadfast to my own opinions on music, and as contrarian and elitist I feel that I am when discerning great music from [...], I can still be swayed by old fashioned hype. Rahsaan Patterson's "Love In Stereo" is a perfect example of what can happen when you buy into the hoopla. Now don't take this wrong. This brother is ultra talented and a hell of a fine singer, but ultimately the product's gotta stand up to the praise. That being said, this album's not bad, it's just not that good. Not from a musical standpoint, because the playing is funky and phenomenal throughout. A tight band, well written lyrics, and solid production (Sure Boy & Treat You Like A Queen are nice) usually makes for a banger. In this case inexplicably, it all fails to gel for me. I think my biggest hang-ups are the lack of replay value and the absence of a kick a** ballad, a must for my tastes. I honestly cannot see myself reaching for this album for repeat listens. As much as I love strong "neo-soul" music, as far as albums go, I'd rather listen to any of Jill Scott's, Kindred's or Kem's releases before "Love In Stereo". Hell, give me D'Angelo's "Voodoo" (the genre's gold standard imo) or Bilal's "First Born Second" all day every day.

Much of this release sounds a lot like what one might hear at a good open mic function or a nice soul cafe. Strong enough to grab your interest, just not quite good enough to keep it. I must tell you that this is my first purchase of RP's. I saw him on Tom Joyner's show one night, and he killed it. He reminds me greatly of Stokely from Mint Condition who is one of my top male singers in the game. I got curious, and read the reviews here, and decided I'd grab one of his early works to start. This time I'll pick up one of his later albums. I'm hoping I won't be dissapointed. He's way too talented to let me down again. At least I'm hoping.

5 out of 5 stars A Travesty That This CD and This Artist Is Virtually Ignored!!.......2006-02-09

Rahsaan Patterson is a great talent who has
released 3 great albums of material since 1997..
but this one, to my ear, is the best so far!
It's a shame that only a small few really know
about this guy who can write, arrange, produce,
play multiple instruments and sing his natural
you-know-what off!
He has a lot of Chaka Khan in his phrasing
and he has an unusally high voice for a man
to some people and most of black radio will
only play a select few of his cuts late at night....
what a waste!
The highlights of this CD are "It's Alright",
"Sure Boy", "The Day", and two others whose
titles escape me right now but this whole CD
is nice!...Trust!

I hate that he was dropped from his deal with
MCA/Universal last year and had to release his
latest "After Hours" on a european indie
that has little or no distibution so once again,
like this great album, he gets no love from
mainstream radio, video, etc.

Rahsaan and Jon B. are the most overlooked
talents in urban music today!

Unlike their predecessors, who each released about an album a year, Master P and the Wu-Tang Clan dominated the mid to late 1990s with a hailstorm of discs that saturated the rap marketplace. RZA, the Wu's über-producer, added to the storm with Bobby Digital in Stereo, the soundtrack for a straight-to-video film directed, produced, and written by RZA under the alter ego Bobby Digital. Whether he's able to compete with Master P on the cinematic front remains to be seen, but the project surely confirms RZA's mastery of the production studio and of the hip-hop domain in general. Without sounding too threatening or gangsta, RZA--er, Digital--lays down street-lethal beats and rhythms that resonate with a futuristic cyberpunk theme. And while the songs are fairly free of melody, there are plenty of atmospheric keyboard noises, sound effects, and samples to keep things pumping. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars Banga.......2007-04-26

This is not the typical Wu album. RZA experiments on this and it comes out wonderfully. From start to finish this is one of my favorite Wu Albums next to GZA's liquid Swords. From start to finish this is a great album.

1 out of 5 stars What a load of tat.......2006-07-16

Sorry RZA, I have a lot of respect for you and what you've done, but I've never heard such a confused artificial sounding mess of an album. The rapping is non-existent meaningless and the production is rushed. If you are thinking of buying this album then don't you are wasting your money. In fact if you want it I'll give it to you. Bobby you should take some advise from ghostface, stay true, stay true.

5 out of 5 stars What the hell is with these spotlight reviews?.......2006-04-30

Uh, these spotlight reviews suck. 2 stars?! Why is that a spotlight review? Who chooses these.. anyways. This is one of the BEST CDs ever dropped by Wu-tang (or anyone on the east coast for that matter). RZA's flows on this CD are ABSOLUTELY amazing. As with all RZA music, it is very random, and sure, there are a bunch of tracks that might catch you off guard, and make you say "What the F8@$?" But all around, when you get an ear for the lyrics and the production which is the mastery of RZA, you will acknolwedge this CD as being completely amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Near a master piece.......2006-01-26

The RZA is one of the best rappers in the world. Like his name, his words cut you like a razor. No one can match his flow, its amazing the way he can deliver a rap. As a plus, RZA has some of the best unknown rappers on his cds; His beats are awesome. There are some dull spots on the cd, but its few and far between. The Wu and RZA should get more credit for what they do. I own everything RZA touchs, just because its always worth it. Unlike most rappers in todays industry. Im so sick of turning on Mtv, and seeing fake rappers millions of dollars for generic rap tunes. RZA, The Wu, and Wu family will always be better then anything rap will ever produce.

5 out of 5 stars RZA - As Bobby Digital In Stereo.......2005-12-26

Well here it is 1998 and we get a first SOLO album by the RZA. He is already known for being as one of the best Hip Hop producers so now people are wanting to see what sort of album he could cook up. Well this one some people were like "What kinda stuff is this"? It sounded different. RZA was experimenting with different production methods. This doesnt sound like the original Wu-Tang group stuff your used to hearing so notice that, but let me break it down for you.

Lyrics, wow this is where you get to really see RZA shine though. His lyrics are SO on point its crazy! He drops straight knowledge all the way through the album. A couple funny tracks like " Kiss Of A Black Widow" and "Domestic Violence" but even those songs are on point! Lyrically, RZA would outshine anyone who spit on th e album. Before hearing his solo stuff, if you ever said "RZA is alright", nah check this album out then you will see how good his lyrics can really be. Every single track he drops ILL rhymes. Lyrically, this album is hott as f*ck.

Production, heres the crazy stuff. He experimented with a different production method. Not the normal types of beats he usually cooks up for other Wu member or group sh**. What is amazing, is how great RZA can make a song and album be. He can give a album a CERTAIN vibe ALL THE WAY THROUGH! Its crazy! This album has a certain vibe all the way through, I cant tell you which "sort" of vibe because its too hard to think of one, but there is one trust me. The beats on this album are off the hook though. They are different and unique, so check this album out NOW!

This album is different, but the lyrics are hott, production is hott and thats all you need for a good album right. Classic RZA material right here. Probably his best solo effort out. And all of the appearances by different emcees they all drop knowledge and hott rhymes.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Rock.......2007-05-16

Amazing - after nearly thirty years, this is still one of the greatest R&R albums ever recorded. "American Love Affair" has one of the best sets of lyrics I've ever heard - but the entire album is timeless. You really need to buy all of Tonio K's CD's - trust me - you'll never regret it.

5 out of 5 stars An undeniable CLASSIC.......2006-12-11

It's hard to believe how amazing an album this is--especially considering that no other release of Tonio K's is anywhere NEAR this good. The lyrics all around, from the AMAZING "The Funky Western Civilization," to 'putting it another way, okay?' of "H-A-T-R-E-D," this album is spotless--and 21 straight 5-star ratings should all alone attest to its undying firepower. I had this one on vinyl years back and then lost it, and when I got this disc in the mail a few days back, I put on "Funky Western" and could still sing the whole damn song front to end as though I had listened to it just a week ago.

There just aren't many words to talk about how durn good this one is. Get it, pop it in, and make sure you do some chicken strutting to the chicken guitar solo.

Nice.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Top 10.......2006-06-09

The lyrics are etched in my mind along with the melodies. There are few then and fewer now that can match Tonio K's wit and observation of life. Each song stands on its own -- not one runt in the whole pack. Like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, the topics are timeless: lost love, hypocrisy, greed, power abuse and good ol' twisted side of man...just add a dash of raw verve and grab-your-throat intensity. Just imagine if Tonio K offered his own version of the National Anthem...

I bought this LP in 1978 because Steve Simels reviewed it as the greatest rock and roll album of all time and remember Mr. Krikorian's response well. I proceeded to listen to James Brown's Live at The Apollo... I agree with Simels. I still have the original copy and CD as well as his next excellent LP, Amerika.

Album Description

Pencey Prep was formed from the ex-members of local punk heroes Sector 12 and Stick Figure Suicide. They were a rare mix of punk, emo, and indie rock. Originally released in 2001, the band broke up shortly thereafter, and this title has been unavailable for over two years. Before bands like The Used and Thursday were mainstream successes, Pencey Prep was creating music that fused many styles together while keeping true to punk rock roots.

4 out of 5 stars Epitome Of Emo... Bwahaha!.......2007-02-20

This is Lori here, not mein fazhah. Okay, so everyone here's been saying that Frank Iero has a great voice. Now, I love Frankles as much as the rest of you, but let's get serious-- the sweetie's better at screaming than singing. His voice is super-whiny, and he just sounds like my nine-year-old brother. Despite that fact, I love the album so much! I'm always telling my friends who think they know emo to go check out Pencey Prep, cause they're the EPITOME OF EMO. But in a good way. And besides, what other band could get away with a song called 'Fat and Alone'?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2007-02-08

This actually isn't Mark, its his daughter Lizz. I'm signed in on his account. I accidently bought this on my dad's account and it is so awesome! I am a huge My Chemical Romance fan and when I found out that Frank Iero used to be in a band, I immediatley went to Google. I searched for it and listened to it and wanted it right away. Frank Iero's voice isn't any Gerard Way, but it's something and I love it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Pencey Prep Rox!.......2006-07-01

If you've finally figured out that rhythm guitarist 4 MCR Frank Iero used to front a band called Pencey Prep and want to know what they sounded like, buy Heartbreak in Stereo. Once you get over the initial shock that it's Frank singing and not Gerard, you'll get into the strange lyrics and the screaming in almost evry song.!

3 out of 5 stars Pencey Prep.......2006-06-21

I have to say, Frank Iero has a damn good voice. Not that it's up to par with most lead singers in the biz today, but it's pretty awesome, I must say. But I love My Chem and I love Pencey Prep. Therefore, I love this cd.

1 out of 5 stars Why all the great reviews?.......2006-06-18

I HATE this. He is awesome as a guitarist for My Chemical Romance, but what in the world is THIS? He sounds like a retarded constipated 8- year old, when he sings (oops! I mean when he TRYS to sing.)

5 out of 5 stars Ormandy & Philadelphia do Saint-Saens: A Classic of the recorded literature.......2007-05-21

If memory serves, Eugene Ormandy did the Saint-Saens Third Symphony several times in various recordings. Given the brilliant orchestration, plus the use of the great French pipe organ, this piece just has to be a show piece. It demonstrated vinyl LP stereo, then it demonstrated the early failed vinyl quad, then it demonstrated CD stereo, and now it arrives on SACD. This master tape was made in the transition years before superaudio surround sound actually arrived, yet it represented a sterling technical step forward, thanks to the 50 Hz soundstream system that allowed an increase in resolution and something closer to what fanatics have long called, tube-like warmth.

Now this soundstream master is successfully transferred into DSD superaudio, albeit limited to two stereo channels. Which just serves to demonstrate how very much can be accomplished in two channels, given the higher resolution that DSD procedures allow. Yes, the dynamic range and detail and sense of tonal presence are all remarkable and lovely. And if this doesn't approximate the holy grail of tube-like warmth, then I do not think we are ever going to get there via digital methods.

Such technical capacities would mean little if this disc were not also showing off the rich sheen of the famed Philadelphia strings, christened with woodwinds in platinum, and golden glowing brass. The organ is particularly effective, yet integrated always into the larger orchestral fabric. Needless to say, there are never any problems of musical technique with the members of the Philadelphia. They excel, as a matter of course. Yet we must not take their excellence for granted, even though they are so generous with their talents that being cup bearer to the gods must come to seem for a while like the most ordinary of musical occupations.

The Saint-Saens was recorded complete with organ, played by virtuoso Michael Murray, at the Saint Francis de Sales church in Philadelphia, so it has special claims to care and to adopting a clean, non-gimmicky approach. Nearby streets were actually closed to traffic during the sessions, and special voicing of the organ and the church as an acoustic recording venue were carried out.

All of this effort paid off handsomely, now that we can hear what the original master captured.

There is nothing eccentric in this performance. It is entirely mainstream in its tempos and accents. Ormandy was often under-rated, like Fritz Reiner ... competent, yes, but ... Hearing him again after all these years reveals the rock solid tempo management he could take for granted, as well as his ability to get out of the way of the music and let the composer ring through without mannerism or fuss. This is all to the good, since with a facile composer like Saint-Saens, it is easy to try to hitch things up a bit by plastering on somebody's version of Frenchification, gone usually all glitzy. The end results of such pushing and pulling is not only to maul and distort the music, but in the end to make the music seem even shallower and less substantial than ever.

Ormandy does not let his players play down to the composer, nor does Michael Murray condescend, despite the composer's use of the organ for color and weight, as well as for display.

The remainder of the SACD is a second complete French music organ recital, played solo by Michael Murray on the great organ installed in Boston's Symphony Hall. It is difficult to imagine an organist who could play this recital repertoire better, nor a better instrument upon which the music could be played. The famed acoustics of Symphony Hall add their hallowed luster.

Murray as an organist is a masterful twin to Ormandy as band leader. Fuss, muss, and fiddle are foregone in favor of the organist adopting a direct, astute, and very rewarding transparency as a channel of musical communication. The tonal occupations of each different recital piece come through, clearly, and if we have to hear something after the symphony so grandly concludes, it is hard to gripe about this recital being it.

Among the full-channel superaudio competition, I am favorably disposed to the Nezet-Seguin/Montreal Metro outing. It has its own special values. The recent recording by Eschenbach with Philadelphia is also getting loud raves, so that one is probably in the high running, too.

Yet if you grew up with Ormandy - or if you didn't, and have been wondering just what the talk was all about during his long-standing tenure as music director - this disc is a blessedly welcome blast from the past. Bravo to Telarc for re-releasing it in superaudio, and not just consigning it to the past.

Why just have one Saint-Saens' Third? Plus you can use the organ recital portion to help voice and balance your chosen subwoofer into the home system you have been dying to test. Sounds like a win-win-win, thanks to soundstream, and thanks to solid musical values.
