This is the first work by Joann McFatter that I have purchased. It is very difficult to catagorize it. It is a most unique type of praise and worship CD. There is a powerful anointing on the music.

5 out of 5 stars A Salute to the Boys.......2006-11-02

As the story goes Herbie Hancock entered the 'room' the big leagues through Donald Bryd.He knew of Herbie when he was going to college(U.of Chicago?),and they needed a fill in,in Chicago one night, and the rest is history.Donald has four originals, and Herbie contributes two of his own.
This is classic stuff. With Herbie,Butch Warren, and the 'house'blue note
regular Billy Higgins, and Shorter and Bryd. featuring!Higgins is on fire,
poppin. There is a nice balance throughout the set.Byrd plays suberbly on
Herbie Hancock's 'Night Flower'.On 'French Spice'Wayne puts down one of the finest solos I can think of during his tenure at Blue Note. And 'NAI NAI'a tune written by Byrd you should reserve for when you want to pick your spirits up.Yeh,life is good! All this and more welcome you in the room for some vintage music.Enjoy folks

5 out of 5 stars Free Form Fun.......2005-06-03

This album by Donald Byrd was aptly titled. When you listen to it you hear much space and openess. The first track entitled "Pentacostal Feeling", starts out with Butch Warren doing an ad-lib bass line. Herbie Hancock and Billy Higgins join in to set the groove. Byrd and Wayne Shorter play the simple melody line as if there's nothing to it. Byrds solo is very sparse and made of short effortless lines. Shorter solos with the same spacious feeling. herbie hancock contributes a nice ballad, "Night Flower". Most of the album is straight ahead jazz played with a good sense of freedom. The title track, however, is a much more Free piece not only concerning melodically but rhythmnically as well as some very neat Harmonies between Byrd and Shorter. This is the only recorded set with Byrd and Wayne Shorter together. This is also a fine Rhythmn section that has played before on some bluenote albums. "French Spice" is Hardbop piece that bears some resemblance to Miles Davis' "So What."

This is a great album played in a very free manner.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Let The Title Fool You.......2004-03-09

When a jazz fan hears the words "Free Form," he/she immediately thinks of avant-garde experimentations. Well the music on this album by Donald Byrd is not representative of the title, with one (mediocre) exception. Instead, this is a pretty typical early 60s Blue Note effort. Byrd is joined on the frontline by Wayne Shorter, who's in fantastic form and his contribution is a significant reason for the album's success. "Free Form"'s rhythm section of Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins also recorded Herbie's debut "Takin' Off," and Warren and Higgins were a potent combination with Sonny Clark and Dexter Gordon on numerous Blue Note classics. The album's best tracks are "Pentacostal Feelin'," a soul jazz number with a gospel twist, and "French Spice," a classic Blue Note post-bop groove. The album's disappointment is the title track, and its shortcomings are the reason "Free Form" only gets four stars. If this poor avant-garde effort was Byrd's best foot forward into the outward bound, then I see why he went the funk route as his career evolved. The song "Free Form" is boring, repetitive and poorly conceived, from Hancock's tinkling piano lines to Higgins' clanky cowbell. I generally ignore this song, and program around it, when listening to this CD. Since the excellent "Three Wishes" is included on this CD as a bonus track, I like to think of it as "Free Form's" replacement. Despite the failings of the title track, "Free Form" overall is quite enjoyable, and until "Royal Flush" is re-released, it is one of Byrd's best efforts available.

      Album Description

2007 digitally remastered reissue of this album, originally released in 1960 on the Jazzland Records label, Harriott's recorded output is scarce and virtually none of it remains in print. Free Form is now restored to all its former glory, slipcased and with new 2007 sleevenotes. Harriott was, like his contemporary Eric Dolphy, a consummate stylist whose tonal and harmonic inquiries led him off the left-hand path of mainstream Jazzers. Harriott was interested in how mode and interval, when stretched to their limits by extended harmonics, could create "impressions" of lyricism and melody, without actually engaging them. Gott Discs.

5 out of 5 stars Early Free Jazz from Overlooked Musician.......2007-05-16

I would buy this over "Abstract" until they reissue that as well as the sound on "Freeform" is digitally remastered. Other than that they are both classics. Joe Harriott was closer to Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins than John Coltrane. However, he was not just imitating Ornette Coleman. He clearly had his own style. For a similar sounding recording a few years later, try "Our Man in Jazz" by Sonny Rollins (playing with Don Cherry and Billy Higgins from Ornette's classic line up) who also flirted with aspects of free jazz in the 60's. Thanks to a certain free jazz blog Destination-Out, Joe Harriott got the posthumous recognition he deserved and this album was reissued. Let's hope other unknown but classic free jazz artists get the same treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Going mad in a quiet way; just listen to the music........2007-05-06

First the facts of the recording: this 1960 session features Joe Harriott on alto sax, Ellsworth "Shake" Keane on trumpet and flugelhorn, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass and Phil Seaman on drums. At the time of this recording, Harriott had recently undergone a convalescence for tubercluosis during which he reconceptualized his approach to music. Prior to that he had been a definite Charlie Parker disciple. By 1960, he was one of the first innovators of free jazz. Listening back to this music from the current scene it is hard to recognize it as early free jazz. There are definite themes and there seems to be a steady pulse. There is no real use of extended techniques (those really wouldn't become common in jazz for a few more years). It is free form in the sense that there is no set harmony. The melodic sense of the solo is less bluesy than, say, Ornette's. To me, the main attraction is the quality of Harriott's and Keane's soli- they both play with great passion and their interplay is outstanding (as on Calypso). The compositions are nice- there are sudden stops and melodic turns- it is easy to see why Charles Mingus was a fan.
My title is from Harriots own description of his music as "going mad in a quiet way". That is probably as apt a description as any.
In any case, don't let me description of this music as only being somewhat free jazz dissuade you. It is easy to look back from the vantage of almost fifty years and recognize that what seemed revolutionary at the time was merely a large step forward in the history of the music. Whenever I listen to Ornette's early recordings or to Trane with Dolphy at the Vanguard, I wonder what all the fuss was about (But then, I always did). What I want to emphasize is that this is pretty damn fine music that doesn't really need any historical significance attached to it. If you like early Ornette, mid-sixties McLean, or Ken McIntyre you will find a kindred spirit in Harriott's recordings. It is nice to see that new and sonically improved pressings of this CD are coming out. It is a chance for more of us to realize just how wonderful Mr. Harriott and his associates were.
p.s. If anyone can explain to me what the following means, please send me an email: 'Harriott was interested in how mode and interval, when stretched to their limits by extended harmonics, could create "impressions" of lyricism and melody, without actually engaging them.' I am particularly interested in how "extended" harmonics can stretch modes to their limits and thereby create impressions of lyricism. I would also like to know how extended harmonics have anything to do with Harriott's music.

          Amazon.com essential recording

Bartók's Mikrokosmos ("Little World") essentially comprises 153 teaching pieces, divided into six books of progressive difficulty. These works make ideal vehicles for budding piano students who are ready to face the myriad challenges of 20th-century keyboard music. They also reveal the kernels of the Hungarian composer's uncompromising compositional style. György Sándor was a piano pupil of Bartók's, and his fluid, perceptive playing is unfailingly idiomatic, from the simple, canon-like exercises at the start to the demanding Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm that crown the cycle. The mono engineering is thin but acceptable. Suffice it to say that the composer would have been proud of what his pupil achieves here. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars The slender difference that makes the great difference!.......2006-09-29

At the actual moments it's hard to find out that unusual and missed way of play Bartok with these well known dissonant inflections, for all of us who had the immense privilege to watch this legendary pianist twice in Caracas in the seventies and eighties. To this reviewer, it will be absolutely impossible to forget his egregious presence and powering [...], steeled phrasing hovered by that special reverberation and acidic lyricism at the moment to play Out of doors that cold night of December 9, 1982.

Without another intention in mind, but intending to illustrate and motive the newcomer listener, I would say that in just few counted occasions (Richter and Prokoviev, Ravel and Cortot) there has been such chemical rapport between composer and performer.

At least in my case, I have not heard about any other pianist able to sound so sarcastic, reverberating and genuinely Hungarian as Gyorgy Sandor did it.

So I really hope you to keep in mind all these previous considerations at the moment to make this wise choice. Go for this record without any shadow of doubt.

This album is now part of the mythic legend of the treasures for keyboard.

No other pianist will sound so astonishingly as Sandor does.

This muffled-sounding disc features Lightnin' with the psychedelic group 13th Floor Elevators (!) backing him, along with friend Billy Bizor on harmonica. This set is in a fight to the death with 'Lonesome Life', 'Live 1971' and 'It's a Sin to be Rich' for worst Lightnin' Hopkins album, but it's still not all bad. His playing is fine, but he hands over the vocal chores to Bizor on one track, another is an instrumental, and most of the songs lack the focus of his best material. This version of 'Mr. Charlie' rambles, and overall the feeling is one of punching the clock, 'get me my money'.
