The phrase "Time to meditate," as crooned by Ladysmith Black Mambazo in the song "Hello My Baby," might well be the most exquisitely sung line in all recorded music. Tastefully produced by Paul Simon following the success of Graceland, 1987's Shaka Zulu finds Ladysmith harmonizing as sweetly in English as they do in their native Zulu tongue (conveniently translated here). In addition to Christian and courting songs, Shaka's most interesting tunes provide glimpses into tribal culture. As Ladysmith observe in "Yibo Labo (These Are the Guys)": "There usually are problems with secret lovers / The elders never approve." --Richard Gehr

lifesavers song.......2006-08-13
what is the name of the lifesavers song and where can you get it
Hello to my baby.......2006-05-31
Oh, such sweet, sweet memories!! My husband played this CD in our delivery room when our son was born seven years ago. "Time to meditate. I send a messenger to tell you that I want to meet you! Come along, come along to kiss me!"
EVERYONE loves this music! Children, women, men... Am I leaving anyone out? It's sweet, thoughtful, masculine, sometimes playful, sometimes deadly serious, but always hauntingly soulful and lovely music.
African Treat.......2004-06-12
Thought I would give Ladysmith a try based on the good reviews it received here and was not dissapointed. The tracks are very rythmic and uplifting. The recording is very good.
excellent music.......2003-08-25
you can't go wrong with this cd. it's excellent uplifting and thoroughly enjoyable music.
One of those I take with me wherever I go.......2003-06-15
I have put it in my cd case when I am working on the road, I've taken it into my massage therapy office to listen to while working on clients, I play it when cleaning around the house... this is one of my most favored, versitile cd's in my collection. I find it relaxing when I need to unwind, and uplifting when I am feeling sluggish. It certainly will not to appeal to all tastes. Not everyone enjoys acapella harmonies or listening to music that is not in ones own language, so I cannot make a blanket "thumbs up" for each taste. If you enjoyed the beginning of the song, "Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes" on Paul Simon's *Graceland* cd, you have a pretty good taste of what this cd offers (sans Paul Simon)... and even more so.

Product Description
Martin Cradick holds a unique relationship with the Baka hunter-gatherers, brilliant musicians from the Cameroon rainforest. Since their first release "Spirit of the Forest" in 1992, Baka Beyond has grown into a dynamic eight-piece band with musicians from across Africa and Celtic Europe. Each visit to the forest has also seen the Baka further their own music. On "Rhythm Tree" Baka and Baka Beyond come together with music recorded both in the UK and the Cameroon rainforest.

Beautiful, Inspiring music that makes you get up and dance!.......2005-10-12
This is a gorgeous album. This is not only a musically beautiful album, but also an ethically beautiful album. Check out the band website (...) for details of how the Baka musicians (of the Baka Pygmy Tribe from the rainforest in Cameroon, who are the inspiration for and recorded for and sampled in the music for Baka Beyond) are paid exactly the same as all the other musicians who play on the album and how those royalties get turned into projects (Decided on by the Baka themselves) that help the whole of the Baka community, a marginalised culture in a very corrupt part of the world.
The music on the album is sublime, there are some 'Baka only' tracks and they are beautiful. The harmonies are incredible and very evocative, especially with the sounds of the rainforest audible in the back ground.
The music of Baka Beyond will make you want to get up and dance, it's lively, positive and even better live!

Never has there been a more appropriate Red Hot tribute than this one dedicated to the music of Afrobeat founder Fela Kuti, the Nigerian legend who died from AIDS-related complications in 1997. The artists and groups heard here, nearly 40 all told, cover the musical spectrum: hip-hop (Blackalicious, Roots), jazz (Roy Hargrove, Archie Shepp); soul (Sade, D'Angelo), Afrobeat (Tony Allen, Femi Kuti), world music (Baaba Maal, Jorge Ben), electronic music (Mixmaster Mike, Money Mark) and rock (Nile Rodgers). They have come together to raise money for the 25 million Africans now infected with the AIDS/HIV virus. Red Hot efforts often pair different artists together on the same song, and this album features many once-in-a-lifetime collaborations. Fela's music has been refashioned and mixed together here according to the styles of the artists, rendering several of the 20 songs barely recognizable in comparison with the originals. But such is the strength of Fela's music that even such singular-sounding artists as Macy Gray and Dead Prez get into the Afrobeat spirit of things. --Tad Hendrickson
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Tribute for a good cause!.......2005-09-06
Fela was the founder and king of Afrbeat, and an inspiration to acts as diverse as fellow Nigerian Lagbaja, and US prog rock duo The Mars Volta (Yes!!). Sadly he succumbed to AIDS related complications in 1997. Fitting then that this tribute CD raises money for AIDS relief in Africa. The CD liner notes talk extensively on this.
Chock full of a diverse array of musical talent; Nile Rogers, Macy Gray, D'Angelo, Sade, The Roots, Les Nubians, Meshell Ndegeocello, Femi Kuti, Baaba Maal and Cheikh Lo to name a few. Most of the songs are reinterpretations of songs by Fela in the artists own unique style, usually arranged differently from the originals. Fela's original vocals are interspersed during interludes. An excellent blend of African meets African American.
`Water no get enemy' featuring Femi, Macy Gray, Nile Rogers, Roy Hargrove and D'Angelo stays faithful to the original; shuffling beats, rich percussion, and lots of blaring horns. It's a real treat hearing Macy and D'Angelo singing in pidgin English.
The vocals of Sade's `By your side' are imposed on a shuffling dubby Afrobeat rhythm. Echo-ey vocals and rich percussion, dreamy sounding. Excellent!
`So be it' featuring Kelis on vocals is the other non Fela composition. It is a calming R&B song with some African sounding backing vocals and great horns played by Ugochi Nwaogwugwu.
`No Agreement' by Res, Tony Allen, Ray Lema, Baaba Maal, Positive Black Soul & Archie Shepp is another outstanding performance. Great jazzy breaks and wonderful horns.
`Zombie (part 1)' is a bouncy hip hop/Afrobeat affair featuring Bugz in the Attic & Wunmi, with lyrics about the robot mentality of soldiers blindly taking orders from above. Written during the days of military rule in Nigeria.
`Zombie (part 2)' with Nile Rogers and Roy Hargrove is an excellent instrumental piece, closer to the original. An energetic horn laden, percussion rich number, with faint electronic tweets.
Another outstanding piece is `Shuffering and shmiling' featuring Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Bilal and Jorge Ben. Transformed with skittery beats and some skat singing and rapping, and horns that stay true to the original. Beautiful!
Each song is musically rich and captivating in it's own way, be it `Gentleman', `Shakara/lady (parts 1 and 2)' with excellent guitar work, talking drums and razor sharp horns, to `Trouble sleep, yanga wake am'. The attention to detail is astounding, everything in its right place.
A beautiful CD showing the wealth and beauty of African music. Not meant to replace the originals at all, and a perfect tribute to the king.
Afrobeat for the masses.......2004-06-29
Shuffering and shmiling alone is enough to make this cd a solid purchase. Underground hip hop luminaries Talib Kweli and Dead Prez combine to remake the song while keeping the same general beat and theme. It's an unbelievably compelling song that does no injustice to the original, rare in a tribute album.
The fun doesnt stop with Shuffering though. Sade's track is a standout and Femi Kuti does his daddy proud. Buy this CD, your ears will thank you.
Disappointing.......2004-05-03
Red Hot and Riot was a HUGE disappointment. With the exception of a very few covers that stay true to the original (the best being "Water no get Enemy" by his son, Femi), the album consists largely of rap songs that have only one thing in common with the original Fela Kuti tunes: the title. Gone are the absolutely exquisite melodies and rhythms that came out of the pure genius of Fela. Some of the rappers doing the covers are so egotistical that not only do they abandon Fela's heavenly musical stylings; they don't even bother to adhere to the original lyrics. Given all this, I just want to issue a warning to those listeners who think that by buying this album, they may be getting a good introduction to Fela's music: save your money and buy one of HIS albums. Even Fela's worst album would be a thousand times more worthwhile to listen to than this eminently forgetable drivel.
A treasure.......2004-02-22
There's not a bad cut on this CD. I never had the pleasure of seeing Fela Kuti, altho I've caught his son in performance a few times. This CD admirably honors Fela's fight, his soul, his fire! My favorite cut is Gentleman with Meshell and Yerba Buena! Baby, it just don't get any better than this...hot, luscious Afro-Soul with a dead-on message. I'm not a Sade fan, but even I have to bask in the black velvet glow of her slide thru this remake of By Your Side. Anyone who digs Macy Gray (count me in) will be all smiles listening to her signature riffs on Water No Get Enemy. I hope the inclusion of Baaba Maal and Cheikh Lo will turn on those listeners who might not otherwise tune in to these killer African artists. This CD is always in my rotation (along with Resident Alien, Seal IV, 6 Degrees' Latin Travels, and Tourist) Slide it in and dance your heart to bursting. It's all for a good cause (AIDS awareness), so double bonus!
Haunting + Pulsating.......2003-08-18
This CD was released in October of last year, but I still can't get it out of my head (not that I want it to be) Great, solid, breathing album. Love Baaba Maal's Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am. The rhythms pulsate and the vocals grab me deep within. Love the guest stars -- Sade, Res, Meshell Ndegeocello, Nile Rodgers, Macy Gray, Kelis, Talib Kweli, Les Nubians, etc. I am in love with the lush compositions and prepossessing rhythms. They all add a certain touch to the vibe of the LP. Plus, all proceeds from the album go towards fighting AIDS in Africa. An even greater reason to love it. I recommend picking up this album if ever you're in the record store. You won't be disappointed.

Album Description
Before the Civil War, when a slave's every action was monitored by his "owners," songs became a powerful and vital form of private communication and expression on Southern plantations. Emotions and information that a slave could never plainly voice could be sung in coded spirituals and folk songs. When daring slaves sought a path to freedom in the North on the so-called Underground Railroad, actually a series of travel routes and safehouses, these songs became tools to transmit information and advice about escape plans, to assert defiance, inspire runaways, and express fear and elation at the harrowing journey ahead.
On "Steal Away: Songs of the Underground Railroad," veteran folk duo Kim and Reggie Harris capture the power, spirit and messages of these encrypted songs in a rich and moving collection of largely traditional material. This album, the core of an ongoing series of workshops and presentations for students, teachers and families by the Harrises, has become an important educational tool and is stocked in many libraries and museums around the country.
The CD's booklet includes informative, detailed liner notes and the lyrics to its 16 selections, shedding light on their hidden or inherent meanings: "Wade in the Water" reminded runaways to follow rivers and streams for direction, cover, and food; "Follow the Drinking Gourd" taught slaves to use the Big Dipper to find the North Star as a celestial signpost to freedom; "Let Us Break Bread Together" signaled secret planning meetings. Other traditional songs here such as "Oh Freedom," "Now Let Me Fly," "Free at Last," and "No More Auction Block for Me" require no decoding. These standards are joined by three contemporary songs - "Harriet Tubman," a tribute to the escaped slave who became one of the most famous Underground Railroad "conductors"; "Ain't I a Woman," a musical arrangement of a famous speech by Sojourner Truth, a 19th century crusader dedicated to slavery's abolition and women's rights; and the Harrises' own "Heaven is Less than Fair," based on narrative accounts of escaped slaves about their flight to freedom and the loved ones they left behind.
The Harrises present these songs with simple grace, using yearning harmonies and acoustic guitar accompaniment to convey the melancholy of slavery, the glimmerings of hope for a better life, and the joy of achieving a hard-won freedom.
Customer Reviews:
Just Brilliant!.......2007-03-23
I have had the pleasure to know Kim & Reggie Harris in the 1990s. They are gifted musicians and story tellers and they are gifted at making you feel like a passenger on the underground railroad, the Train that remains Bound for Glory!
I just love the collection of songs; you learn about the code terms for freedom as you come along for the ride. Just hop on board! This Train is Bound for Glory and it's making stops for freedom all along the way. Next stop - No More Auction Block for Me - an excellent statement against an atrocious period in history when people were sold at auction blocks on the open market. Now it's time to Follow the Drinking Gourd on the next stop. Kim has a beautiful voice and when you hear her sing "Free at Last," don't be surprised if you are very moved.
Abolitionists - those opposed to slavery; Quakers opposed slavery and helped many people escape to the Promised Land outside the slave states.
Conductor - people who helped lead the Underground Railroad and keep that train moving!
Drinking Gourd - North Star, used by many to travel northward out of the slave states.
Heaven - Code word for Canada, the desired northern stop. Canada recognized all free citizens, regardless of race. The Train that was Bound for Glory made many successful runs to Canada.
Safe Houses, stops - homes that were used to shelter runaway slaves. These safe houses were stops the train made en route to freedom.
Slave Catchers - self explanatory.
These gifted story tellers are not only wonderful musicians, but they are also historians who bring to life a vital part of history that should never be forgotten.
Listen While I Tell You a Story!.......2007-01-15
As background music while I tell the story of the hidden symbols and meanings in my Underground Railroad Quilt, this is the best collection I have found. I was pleased with the sound quality and clarity of the words. My only complaint was the unevenness of the volume. Perhaps I can adjust the timing of my story so the lower volume sections of the music correspond with the more somber parts of the talk!
Great for kids.......2003-09-04
My pre-schooler liked this tape after she read about Harriet Tubman
The Most Beautiful Music.......2000-03-30
This is quite simply the most beautiful music I've ever heard in my life - not just one song, but the entire CD.
Kim and Reggie Harris's voices are extraordinary, their harmonies are perfect, and their guitar work supports each song ideally. In addition, the selections are so moving that more than one of them brought me to tears.
I don't think the samples nearly do it justice.
Songs of power, protest and defiant hope.......1998-05-26
Kim & Reggie have done it again with their latest release. This extraordinary collection features a diverse collection of the "code" songs of the Underground Railroad, the brave group of African-Americans who escaped the oppression of slavery in the U.S. South and then joined Harriet Tubman, the group's "foundress," in her quest to bring others to freedom. The songs in this collection truly touch every human emotion as they convey a history that is too often forgotten in our society which is more racially divided than ever. I am struck by the confident hope expressed by songs such as "Harriet Tubman/Steal Away," "Great Day," and "Wade in the Water." The story & accompanying song "Heaven Is Less Than Fair" brings home the brutality of slavery that separated families and loved ones from each other. All the songs carry a messaage for today, especially songs like "Ain't I A Woman?" as we discover that these words of Sojourner Truth could still in some ways be spoken today. This CD is a great listen, a great gift, and a great teaching tool. Highly recommended to all.

Probably the album to get.......2004-07-24
Without exaggeration, I think African Sun should be listed as one of the essential jazz CDs collectors must own. I know many people prefer Ibrahim's more avant-garde period (roughly 1965-1970) while others prefer his recent, more contemplative explorations. Personally, I feel his recordings he made in South Africa in the 1970s are the best.
Also on this album are saxophonists Kippie Moeketsi, Basil Coetzee, and Barney Rachabane, along with bassist Sipho Gumede. All of the musicians already were or became some of the greatest figures in South African jazz. Of particular note are Basil Coetzee's solo on Nobody KNows the Trouble I've Seen for a gospel-tinged romp, or the hauntingly powerful solo by Kippie Moeketsi on Memories of You (possibly one of the most powerful pieces of recorded music EVER).
Ibrahim has moments of virtuosic shining, but often simply hangs out in the background, guiding these incredible ensembles (it's a collection of works over years) along some incredible music. You really can't do without this album.

"If you forget your mother, you have lost your life," croons Nigeria highlife star Nico Mbarga in one of African music's biggest hits, the classic 10-minute midtempo dance rave "Sweet Mother." Mbarga was the most successful translator of West African horn-driven rumba to a guitar band. Mbarga's Rocafil Jazz group may lack bop syncopation, but its six members nonetheless swing together with sweet, machinelike precision. Released originally in the late seventies, before juju and fuji became Nigeria's predominant styles, the tracks collected on Aki Special collectively mark one of the most fertile periods of African music--with tribal rhythms and proverb-studded vocals combined with Western pop harmonies to create ecstatic dance music for both the body and, as suggested by "Free Education in Nigeria," the body politic. --Richard Gehr

Looking For The Man Who Gave Me This Music.......2006-07-17
I was a young American Living in Germany. A refugee from Africa whom I befriended brought this record over to my house. I recorded it without ever knowing who the artist was until now. I'd love to know what happened to you my friend. You came to my house and we played drums in my basement. I have always had the songs on this record in my head and I'm so glad to have found it now. The rhythmic guitars and catchy vocals have always been with me. I hope life treated you kind and this music reminds me of my friendship with you. Many Thanks.
Sweet n' Happy.......2005-05-06
I am an american born in Cameroon when my parents were in Peace Corps. Prince Nico was the record we always used to play while we were preparing the house for a big party. We would dance around and arrange everything. I feel my African roots when I hear this music deep down. Lighthearted yet full of poignant meanings, this music will uplift your feet and your mind. If you like African music this is a must!

I am a half Nigerian (Igbo on my father's side) and have listened to this song since i was a newborn! I am 14 years old, so as you can imagine, mother and I have spats. alot. However, when i listen to this song it makes me feel better, and im ready to face my mother.Because she truly is my "sweet mother"
This is just like "home" to me..........2005-02-08
Nothing like Naija music! I got this for the "Sweet Mother" song in rememberance of my mom who left this place last year in May. Nice dancin music... :) {I am nigerian/igbo by both parents}
A Taste of Nigeria.......2004-05-28
When I received this CD this past Christmas I was estatic. Being that I am a 1st generation American, I look for anyway to feel at home away from my true home (Nigeria). This CD gives me a taste and feel of my culture and ensures that I know where I come from. Sweet Mother, the hit single off of the CD, is a sound that I grew up on. The upbeat style of sound exhibited on this track, as well as the other tracks, forces you to get up and dance not knowing what has overcome you. Aki Special is a true representation of the old Nigeria that my parents talk so fondly of.

Dance the Devil Away.......2004-12-16
This is some of the best music around, no kidding. It's got some of the most awesome instrumentals I've ever heard. This music is perfect anywhere, no matter what you're doing, where you're going, or why you're doing it.
WARNING: This will make you dance. This will make you feel awesome. This will take you places. Do not buy this unless you are willing to risk all of the above every time you play it.
No truly, this music is awesome. Aside from the fact that, yes, it will make you dance, feel great, and take you places. It is completely worth every penny you spend on it.
GREAT.......2004-06-08
I love this CD and listen to it all the time. I got it from my dance teacher and the class loved it so much that we came up with a dance to go with it and now compete with it. All of the judges comment about the great song. (We use Animal Life)
Very good starter for the blind enthusiast.......2003-06-25
I would like to start out by explaining that I am not a fan of world music in particular, but I have an interest and the patience for all music. For anyone like me, who is primarily fond of hard rock, you just may love this album. I was initially introduced to this album by my parents and at first did not care too much for it, but with my growing interest in the fusion of heavy metal and tribal music like Sepultura has done with songs such as Kiowas, Ratamahatta, and others, I found myself looking to this album for a more purified version of what I considered to be "tribal music". Don't get me wrong, this album in no way resembles Sepultura or heavy metal for that matter, but it does give me the same sense of satisfaction from a primal point of view. All the songs are instrumental and while maintaining a similar composition, each track owns up to it's own atmosphere. My preferred tracks are *Cuban Connections*, *Animal Life* and my favorite, *Medina* which has some what of an eerie sound and presence to it. If you even think that you may be interested in an album like this, I highly recommend that you pick it up, as it will surely be a corner stone to integrating music genres into your collection.
perfect.......2003-01-19
I bought this CD not knowing anything about it. I liked didgeridoo and that was the only reason for buying it. I loved it immediately. The guitar is actually one of my favorite parts. Martin's style is very unique and fits perfectly with the rest of the band.
Great fiddlin' too.
What an album!.......2001-01-27
I bought this cd many years ago, but it has consistently remained one of my favorites. I'm not a huge fan of "world music," but this album is just so wonderfully beautiful and exotic. The music varies between the airily light-hearted and the darkly romantic. This disc is also a blessing for those unfamiliar with the didgeridoo, a simple instrument with unbelievable range. The 'doo, along with guitar, violin, and numerous African percussion instruments, creates an incredibly unique sound that has to be experienced. Buy this spectacular album, and look for Outback's other release, "Baka."

Zez Confrey (1895-1971) may not be a household name, but his 1921 masterpiece "Kitten on the Keys" certainly is. The Illinois-born composer studied the classics growing up, but somehow the temptation of Vaudeville sneaked its way into his compositions and he found success writing catchy ragtime miniatures with goofy names ("Wise Cracker Suite," "Dizzy Fingers," "Blue Tornado"). Republic of Georgia pianist Eteri Andjaparidze performs 24 of Confrey's works with technical perfection and plenty of spirit--two requirements for these compositions--but sounds a tad robotic on some numbers. Between "Kitten" and 1959's "Fourth Dimension," Confrey explored blues, rags, Latin rhythms, and--of course--jazz, but the real highlight here is a slow number, the four-movement Moods of a New Yorker. In sum, this a great tribute featuring great music, perfect for fans of George Gershwin, Ferde Grofé, Jelly Roll Morton, and Joseph Lamb. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Oh, Kitten...it's a Must Have.......2004-12-29
Hats off to Naxos for releasing this absolutely perfect tribute to Zez Confrey - it was high time, someone had to do it, and Naxos has done Confrey real justice. One would expect caricature of his work, rather than the respectful, honest, accurate renditions of his work featured on this album.
I discovered my love for Confrey thanks to the Aeolian Hall Birth of Rhapsody in Blue album (another of my reviews covers that great one), which featured a small selection of his compositions. The distinct, unique sound of his work snagged me immediately, and so I was thrilled to come upon this little Naxos treat.
Every piece on the album is sheer delight, but several do stand out from the rest. "Kitten on the Keys" (Confrey's most famous composition, here done full justice), "Meandering" (which just glides and lilts along like feathers on a breeze), "Kinda Careless" (a sensuous, seductive little number), "Yokel Opus" (a snappy little foxtrot), "Coaxing the Piano" (which seems almost an homage to 'Twelfth Street Rag', in a skewed way), "Movie Ballet" (which sounds exactly like its title would suggest), and "Rhythm Venture" (so gracefully syncopated, it's practically a marvel).
Any and all Confrey and jazz fans should consider this album as required listening, and well worth owning. The price alone is reason enough - you cannot go wrong with Naxos' rates. But even if it were four times the price, it would still be a bargain.
Almost , Nearly, perfect.......2003-10-25
Wonderful selection of pieces, most of these are lesser-known Confrey and tend to represent his more "Serious" music. Perhaps because of that the pianist (a superb performer) tends to emphasize their concert qualities over their popular music aspects. This is only a tiny complaint. There's a lot of excellect music here, and at Naxos' low price it's a bargan.
Much more than Kitten On the Keys.......2002-05-16
If you thought an album of Zez Confrey music would be track after track like Dizzy Fingers or Kitten On the Keys, you are in a for a pleasant surprise with this superb CD.
The performances of the said party pieces are fast, furious and fun, but there are also some great blues renditions, and some lyrical, reflective pieces.
I would have preferred if the CD had included a few more of the well-known pieces like My Pet, Poor Buttermilk and You Tell 'Em, Ivories, but the many pieces I had never heard of are interesting, and are played beautifully.
Zany yet poetic!.......2000-09-04
Once again, in its "American Classics" series, Naxos has pulled a pleasant surprise rabbit out of the hat. Zez Confrey must be a new name for virtually everyone, unless they are well past my own age, and I don't go back quite that far. The name was certainly new for me, but a few of the pieces on this disc brought memories flooding back, most likely because my parents once had them coupled on an ancient 78 shellac.
Confrey (1895 - 1971) had been relegated pretty much to the dustbin of history before this release. But he did have his days in the sun between the two world wars. Undoubtedly his brightest moment was when he shared billing with George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman on the occasion of the premiere for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, where Confrey had the stage in the first half of the concert and Gershwin in the second. For the most part, after that February, 1924 "An Experiment in Modern Music" concert of Whiteman's, the paths of Gershwin and Confrey began to diverge; Gershwin was, to put it simply, an overnight success.
All of the music on this album is fun, and virtually all of it demands virtuosic pianistic ability, which Confrey must certainly have possessed. Listening to it is like taking a trip down memory lane, back to the popular music in the first third of the previous century. There are pieces which have clear roots in ragtime, embellished upon and brought forward by a few decades, and at least a selection or two which sound very much like Gershwin preludes in their "bluesy" feel. It's also clear that Confrey was not unaware of the classical music of the period, because a few of the pieces capture the idioms of the piano music of Rachmaninoff and Ravel of that period (although they soon veer off into "Confrey territory"). If you listen carefully, you'll even hear a passing reference or two to Chopin. But, like the Rachmaninoff and Ravel musical allusions, these too are in fact just "passing references."
But most of the album is pure Confrey-style pianistic wizardry: Fleet fingers, crossing hands, syncopations and rhythmic "irregularities" with the colorfully descriptive titles of "Meandering", "Coaxing the Piano" and "Stumbling." And his two most famous pieces (which, probably, many of us have never heard), "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers." (In fact, it was "Dizzy Fingers" and "Stumbling" which must have been the coupling on that ancient 78, because they were immediately recognizable.)
Eteri Andjaparidze is an excellent technician in this work, which can be very demanding of technique if it is to be pulled off properly. By and large, she does very well by it. In particular, she succeeds in capturing the passing allusions to the classical piano music of the time. If I had my druthers, I might ask for a little more panache, or insouciance, if you like, in the Confrey specialities noted in the previous paragraph. But who can quibble, especially at the Naxos price, without appearing to be a piker?
Neat stuff for a refreshing change of pace, with an opportunity to hear an hour's worth of music by someone who had been ignored for too long. That's a "get it" recommendation!
Bob Zeidler
Brilliant!.......2000-03-22
I have no idea what Jason Verlinde meant by saying that Eteri Andjaparidze sounds "a tad robotic" on certain pieces on her new Zez Confrey album; indeed, the Republic of Georgia pianist sounds absolutely marvelously free in her interpretations. I cannot hear anything "robotic" at all in her playing. She approaches the intricate syncopations of Confrey's music with dazzling style. She is technically proficient enough to take Confrey's tempi at a furious pace, when necessary, in pieces such as "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers," and to create a sustained, beautiful flow to the music in such "impressionistic" pieces as "Sparkling Waters" and "Mighty Lackawana." The selections which will remind the listener of Art Deco New York in the 1920's and 1930's, are taken at exactly the right tempo, and Ms. Andjaparidze syncopates the rhythms in a sparkling manner. I was utterly amazed at how a pianist, trained in the Republic of Georgia, could evoke the rhythms and style of American music of this type. But she does! In addition, the piano has been recorded beautifully, with sparkling tone at the treble end, and a rich, full bass. I purchased this CD a few hours after reading Frank Behrens' review. It is a wonderful addition to my collection of American music. I urge you to hear this excellent release. Naxos is to be commended for making it available.

One of my lifetime top ten favorites........1999-10-23
Happy, soothing, uplifting, makes you want to dance. Fresh, genuine, charming and unpretentious. I take it with me on otherwise annoying business trips, listen to it in city traffic, while doing errands, etc.
The CD has excellent creations........1999-06-27
This is the most relaxing African music I have ever heard. If you enjoy Kenny G, this is the African version of Kenny G. Good job
Beauty for the Ear.......1999-05-24
Unfamiliar with African music, unsure about a CD in a language you don't understand? Go ahead and try this anyway! This cd was the disc that forced me to go out and get a player oh so many years ago. It is absolutely beautiful, and lyric without the need to understand the words of the songs (how I wish that I did!). I'm afraid I do not know how traditional Samite is considered to be, or how original. Either way however, to my western ear his sound is well rooted in the richness of experience. Sweet, sad, soothing or joyous, it is never cloying or irritating. Although it is not a boisterous CD, rather soft really, I find that I can not use it as background noise because it always quitely draws my attention. Good music for weaving or potting plants, but not writing letters! This CD accomplishes a universality that I suspect many new age artists are seeking, but utterly without that awful vague formlessness or aimlessness that tends to pass for ephemeral in more consciously intellectual musical expressions. Highly recommended! (by me at least!)

Album Description
This recording leaves the listener breathless and astounded by the musical richness of this small area of Africa. In these performances from remote areas of central Ghana, the collective musical genius of everyday farmers, fisher-folk, traders, and civil servants bursts forth. Their singing and chanting moves through a colorful palette of instruments including water drums, rectangular frame drums, side-blown horns, and brass bands. Clear, penetrating sounds of metal instruments offset by complex drumming patterns are framed by haunting vocals. Listeners are immersed in a kaleidoscope of sound. Thirteen tracks and 28 page booklet including extensive notes and photos. This is the only commercially available recording of Akan music.
Customer Reviews:
Great Disc.......2007-06-30
This is a great disc. I whole heartedly review with the former reviewer -- there is so much diversity to just the music of Ghana alone that there is no way to classify it all under one category. So you will need to stretch out and purchase a bunch of different discs with various different styles. This is a good one.
More great music from Ghana. .......2004-11-20
This is a disc completely worthy of your money and time. In case you have family, historical, and/or geographical reasons for wanting to know, the music on this disc is from Ghana's Central Region (not actually in the center of Ghana though, "Central Region" is the name of... for lack of a better term... a state in Ghana). The music is by (and from their areas of the Central Region) Assin, Efutu, Denkyira, and Fante peoples. All are Akan groups except the Efutu, "whose languages belong to the Guan cluster of the Kwa branch". Obviously I got this from the liner-notes, as I am no expert on all the many... and there are MANY... different languages and cultures of Ghana.
As for the music itself, I've had this disc for a couple weeks now and I'm loving it more with each listen. It is a very fine collection of recordings! I didn't get to the liner-notes until yesterday. It was interesting to find out that the Efutu are not Akan, since I had already noticed a distinct difference between the feel of their music and the other (although also differing) musics here. For those with some hip-hop interest, the Efutu track here makes me feel like they are playing some sort of ancient ancestor of a Timbaland beat. I like it alot. =)
There is alot for which to be thankful on this disc, and if you've ever stumbled upon my reviews for a few other cds from Ghana (the Master Drummers of Dagbon 1 & 2, and the Master Fiddlers of Dagbon), you'll be interested in knowing that this disc is completely different from those. Unfortunately, oftentimes things are lumped under the monolithic label of being "African music", but that is so broad as to be almost meaningless, considering the degree of musical diversity even in just one small country like Ghana. If you have the Masters discs I just mentioned, and you're worried about buying this one and feeling like it'd just be more of the same, don't worry. This is a whole other world.
The singing here has a much more organized feel than that on the Masters discs. Also, this disc always has larger groups of singers. It is more of a central feature of the music as well. Some lovely "chorus" vocals, sometimes in the form of interplay with the drumming. What you'll think of the brass band tracks (just a couple), I do not know. I like them, but I'm a weirdo. The first one strikes me almost as William Parker-ish orchestrations of his interpretation of the timbre of a bleating goat. I mean that in a good way. Also the percussion on that track is fantastic! I'm not sure how they are getting this tone, but it's like controlled, perfectly timed fireworks exploding in the distance.
Rather than rambling further, I will wrap this up by saying you probably didn't stumble on this cd by accident, so this sort of thing already interests you. Go ahead and pick this one up because I'm sure you're going to love it.
1979 field recordings from the Akan coastal areas of Ghana.......2004-03-09
Field recordings of Akan folk music from the Central and Western Regions of Ghana made by ethnomusicologist Roger Vetter in 1979. In this respect the disk is more narrowly homogeneous than some similar ones: only the Central and Western Regions are represented, although the bulk of the Akan population of Ghana lives in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions. And, obviously, if it is a disk of Akan music, it does not include music produced by other ethnic groups in Ghana.
What the disk lacks in geographical and ethnic diversity, it makes up in stylistic reach. The music in these recordings is played by non-professional and semi-professional players, and although most of the music is quite traditional (i.e. shows little European influence) some tracks include instruments that originated outside Africa such as the tuba or the electric guitar, and some of the repertoire including waltzes and gospel music show a Western influence transmogrified in the local milieu. In this regard the recordings are authentic: the variety of music produced for local performance and consumption in the Akan coastal regions of Ghana was (and remains) varied, reflecting a variety of cultural uses and influences. While most of the music on this disk was meant for dancing, one of the most interesting tracks is a talking drum piece in which the message is not only played but recited, allowing one to hear the translation from speech to drumming. The accompanying booklet documenting the cultural background, the players, their instruments, and the various musical styles is highly informative.
