Product Description
More than an anthology, Underworlds 1992-2002 'Best of' album includes unreleased tracks as well as some mixes available for the first time on CD. 16 re-mastered tracks from the original. Over two and a half hours of music.
Underworld 1992-2002 is not the full story. Underworld's back catalogue is too vast and rich for that, but it's a gripping one all the same, marking each step along the twisting road from (to paraphrase the Clash) Romford to the world. If Underworld's music has ever chimed with a moment in your life, these are good memories. The best.

The Best and the Rest.......2007-07-23
This collection has all of the Cranberries hits that the casual fan knows. For a causal fan though it also has a bunch of tracks that you've never heard and could have gone without hearing. But what the hell, I got the songs I wanted, may as well fill the cd up anyway.
Great Deal! Fast shipping!.......2007-06-02

The Cranberries Singles 1992-2002.......2007-04-17
I will admit the title "Best" is deceptive, but the record company did many of us a favor who own the Cranberries albums. This compilation offers the single versions and created new edits, which is clearly stated in the booklet. Imagine trying to buy all eighteen songs (pictured in the booklet) individually? The last two songs on this CD, making the total twenty were previously unreleased. The Pop-Rockin' "Stars" is no token throw-away. It one of their better songs in the last phase of the Cranberries. I like the single versions better on this CD and album versions better on the individual albums if that makes sense. A true "Best" is owning "Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We? - Complete", "No Need To Argue - Complete" and this compilation. The other indivdual songs is personal choice. The band also had the fans vote for their favourite non-single - "Daffodil Lament". So what is offered here is sampler of their five albums. For a beginner, it's good enough. For a big fan, it closes the book unless the band gets back together. In the 1990's the Dave Matthews Band and the Cranberries were Modern Rock's best.

Very strong collection........2005-08-06
Underworld...Well if you're reading this you are either a die-hard fan, or soon to be. '92-'02 is a wonderful album and great starter if you don't own an album yet. Plus, it's relatively cheap!
The straight talk is buy "Second Toughest in the Infants" as well-that is a 6 star album. Let these albums sink in slowly, they will stick with you forever. And play it loud.
Fans Should Venture Into This Underworld.......2004-01-20
Unless you have been following the English band's entire career since its formation in the early-90s, and through its radical transformation from rock to ambient trip-hop to intelligent dance music, and hence have every single they've ever made, `1992-2002''s variety of the band's stylistic trends should provide an enjoyable retrospective glance at Underworld's classics.
The highlights on Disc 1 are definitely the trippy 1994 hits `Mmm Skyscraper I Love You' (with otherworldly lyrics - `..and I see Elvis, and I hear God on the phone...'- and a muted, eerily perpetual beat); `Dirty Epic` (the complexity of this dub track rivals the best of Orbital and q-ziq); and `Dark & Long' (close your eyes, pretend the world just exploded and you're floating through space - the impact of this long and amazing track).
Those songs led to the opening track of Disc 2: the incredibly dark and energetic `Cowgirl' astounds with its ever-increasing layers of rhythm and melody. 1994 track `Born Slippy' is a modern dance classic, the monotonous lyrics have become the symbol of Danny Boyle's druggie hit `Trainspotting'. The film's extended soundtrack belongs to Underworld's composition, which masterfully represents the addled mind of an addict. `Push Upstairs', from Beacoup Fish, is a classy dance track, visualized very well in an amazing video everyone should check out - it dilutes the song's pretentiousness with fuzzy gorgeous landscape images; by itself `Push Upstairs' wears itself out after three minutes. `Moaner', on the other hand, benefits from its regularity - it starts off with an instrumental accelerating beat that doesn't let up until the last second, and then starts from the beginning with the supplement of emotionally charged lyrics. `Moaner' would be a craze at any club.
The rest of the tracks do not particularly stand out, but they do emphasize the quality of Underworld's highlights. Complex and stunningly vivid, `1992-2002' is Underworld's reminder that they are one of the most complex and gifted trios in contemporary dance music.
Disc 1 Provides New Content ; Disc 2 Fails to Do So.......2004-01-07
I wish Underworld had simply released only the 1st disc, and charged less for the set. Disc 1 is great, as it offers several rare tracks; Big Mouth, Dirty, mmm Skyscraper I Love You, & Spikee. These songs are all great, and make the CD worth purchasing... or at least purchasing used. Disc 2, however, is less exciting. It contains 9 tracks, 4 of which are either identical or slightly modified copies of songs from Beaucoup Fish. CD 2 is basically filled with slight variations on songs that are already in any Underworld fan's collection. I wish that instead of re-releasing a bunch of songs that people already have, Underworld had released more rare material. If anything, I think that the original songs are better than the remixes. In general, the originals tend to have longer and more complex lyrics.
Ten years of Magnificent Music sampled on 2 CDs........2004-01-03
I love this CD Anthology. It showcases some of the Underworld's best songs. It also has some very hard to find tracks like the 12 minute plus Spikee, the beautifully sad & mellow 8 ball, the original version of Dirty and the harmonica driven Big Mouth. It also has classic Underworld tunes like King of Snake, Jumbo, Born Slippy Nuxx, Dirty Epic, Dark Train, and Mmm Skyscraper I love you.
Moaner, Born Slippy Nuxx & Push Upstairs are all unique versions. Each is slightly different than the album/single versions. This makes another reason to buy this CD set. All of the songs on this 2 CD set are wonderful. If you are curious about the Underworld, buy this Anthology.
If you enjoy the Underworld, this is a great way to experience their music. This is a wonderful sample of the music they have made over the past decade. Put this CD in, sit back and let it take you where it takes you. The Underworld doesn't create songs so much as they create beautiful art that you can listen to.
11 years and still going strong..........2003-12-28
As the end of 2003 approaches, Underworld release their first compilation. Sixteen tracks separated on two discs. Eleven of the tracks have appeared on previous studio albums, while the remaining five have never appeared on a studio album at all (until this one). The compilation starts off with "Bigmouth", which makes prodigious use of the harmonica following along side a sycopated beat and a thumping bass. Later on, there's "Spikee", which is 12 minutes, 30 seconds long. A chugging "locomotive" melody is the best I can describe it, which is why I like it so much. On the second disc, there's an extended version of "Push Upstairs" (with additional lyrics)which I think is better than the original version found on "Beaucoup Fish". That, in turn, is followed by an extended version of "Moaner", which isn't that much better than the original (they should've left the last three minutes off, if you know what I mean). Still, "Moaner" is a great track. These are some of the highlights of "1992 - 2002". My only complaint is that "Dinosaur Adventure 3D" wasn't included. After all, it was released as a single (then again, it was released in 2003, hence, that's why it wasn't included). In any case, this compilation is a good start for the casual listener, and even if you aren't, you should buy this anyway for the five tracks not released on any prior album.

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant band, disappointing compilation.......2005-01-11
Others have pointed out that this collection has nothing that is not available elsewhere. There is no reason for fans of Juno Reactor to purchase this album. Even the "original" cut of Hotaka is available on a single that most fans either already own or will want to own.
Another major disappointment is that the collection comes with no liner notes, not background on the group. One thing I usually like about "best of" compilations are the commentaries or documentary materials that provide additional insight into the music, the members of the band, their evolving place in history. This CD has absolutely nothing of the sort. It might as well be a home-burned mix disc.
As for an intro album, I guess it's a reasonable selection. It *does* include many of the pieces that I would put on my own personal best-of. But again, it has been pointed out that if you like this kind of music, Juno Reactor is *so* good that you are going to want to own every original anyway. There is no original album, no "single" that is in any way disappointing. In fact, this album is the only time I have ever been disappointed by Juno Reactor, and that's only because there is not one atom of original material, musical or otherwise, in the package.
Good Stuff.......2004-10-04
Within the scope of electronic music there seem to be no strict boundaries. Everything imaginable can be realized through the use of digital synthesizers and computers. Juno Reactor has proven that anything within earshot can be utilized and compounded into a viable musical form that may resist description. Whether the Reactor are dabbling in techno, trance, world, industrial or rock they come across as the seasoned veterans of the scene that they are. So if you've found yourself at a loss as to where to start your Juno Reactor descent then this 11-song collection is it.

Entering the Odyssey that is..Juno Reactor.......2004-10-03
I first came across Juno Reactor on the soundtrack to the movie "Virtuosity" with "Samurai". Most recently since getting this CD I've been looking to expand my collection of their music. With any "Best Of" CD it's going to be hard to put together something that everyone will like since we all have our favorites. This CD does a decent job of putting some of the good songs and different styles of Juno Reactor together, but like most, I feel that some better ones were left out. I would have pulled ones like "Feel The Universe", "Komit", and "Hule Lam" and put in any of the following songs: "Swamp Thing", "Haguya Hime", "Childeren of the Night", "Contact", "10,000 Miles", Guardian Angel", "Ice Cube", and "Samurai". Still this introduces anyone new or familiar with Juno Reactor and the new song "Hotaka" isn't too bad at all.
An interesting look at Juno Reactor........2004-08-12
Like Fluke's Progressive History X, Juno Reactor's Odyssey is designed to take a retrospective look at the past. And like PHX, it fails miserably, since no artist or group can be summed up in such a short selection. Still, it's a decent CD.
I got my first taste of Juno Reactor in the original Mortal Kombat flick, and got my interest re-sparked by the soundtrack to The Matrix Revolutions. But it was when I heard the single Samurai that I knew I had to look Juno Reactor up. Naturally, I came into this CD looking for more tracks like Samurai. Naturally, I was disappointed. Like Fluke's PHX, this is a fairly diverse CD, designed to give you a taste of all JR's various sides. The album starts very well with High Energy Protons, which is exactly the kind of Juno Reactor sound I was looking for. Rotorblade also impressed me (remember, I came in looking for more like Samurai). I consider those two tracks to be the best on the CD. But Odyssey slowly abandons that sound in favor of the more tribal style JR adopted, and tracks like God Is God and Conga Fury take over. Things pick up again with Komit and Pistolero, the latter simply being one of the coolest tracks I've ever heard. Hule Laam and Hotaka really don't do it for me; both feel too forced. Hotaka particularly bothers me, as the guitars completely overwhelm the Japanese taiko drums that should have taken center stage. Masters Of The Universe is an interesting number that many will probably recognize from The Animatrix trailers (Conga Fury was also used in The Animatrix).
The CD is never dull, and does offer an acceptable look at JR's different stages of progression. But with my bias towards the progressive/psy-trance sound of High Energy Protons and Samurai, it just didn't quite hit the spot for me. I definitely think all electronica fans should look into Juno Reactor, but just maybe not this album.
An excellent album for newcomers, but nothing new.......2004-05-10
Over the years, Juno Reactor has been the center of a lot of attention, a rare feat for such a quality electronic band. With original works for several movies such as Mortal Kombat, Lost in Space, and the prestigious (yet disappointing) Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions, Juno Reactor now has the eyes and ears of the world, and as such, it would be logical to release a compilation of their (well, Ben Watkins's - Alleged Juno Reactor `pivotal member') past works, which in contrast to the advertised "Celebrating 10 Years".
Odyssey effectively outlines Juno Reactor's career by featuring popular songs from their previous albums. As a Juno Reactor fan, I could spend a decent amount of time talking about how I think other songs should have been put on the album, but all things considered, the selection accurately portrays Juno Reactor's talent, and sheer variety in different music styles. Few other artists can meander through different genres as easily and naturally as Juno Reactor (Ben Watkins), and Odyssey begins with such pivotal Psy-Trance tracks, suck as "Feel The Universe" and "Rotorblade" of who's hard-hitting nature, and vague industrial feel more at home in Matrix films, rather than the dance floor.
The album progresses into Juno Reactor's more natural feel, with the popular jungle/tribes piece "Conga Fury" (featured in the "Animatrix" short "Final Flight of the Osiris"), and than moving on into Pistolero, a western themed song about a woman who is in love with a Bank Robber, complete with Spanish guitar.
Fans of Juno Reactor probably own the albums that include all of the above, suggesting once again that Odyssey is meant more as an introduction to the world of Juno Reactor. Contributing to this likely intention is the fact that many of the songs on Odyssey have been edited with shorter introductions. While this definitely will help those who don't have the attention span for 7 to 10 minute songs, it's somewhat an insult to fans, and once again limits the appeal of the album to newcomers. Unlike some electronic artists, Juno Reactor has always been able to provide the payoff for a long build, so, I do not think this was necessary.
Like any "Best of Album," the intended hook to snare old school Juno Reactor fans was a brand new song titled "Hotaka," a collaborative effort with Gocoo, a taiko drumming team. Hotaka lends it's self to the Japanese influenced song, titled "Samurai" (also Juno Reactor), and throws in some classic Rockin' Guitar, courtesy of Steve Stephens (Billy Idol). When broken down, Hotaka is composed of Gocoo's style of somewhat vocal (yet bodiless) percussions, pseudo jungle beats, and Rock n' Roll guitar riffs. Daring in concept, but in practice, it doesn't really work. The song is too segmented, and sounds like a clumsy hodgepodge of a piece, suggesting once again that Bed Watkins really doesn't play well with others (like his Collaborative piece with Don Davis for the Matrix Soundtrack). Alone, Hotaka unfortunately doesn't offer enough for fans, and simply purchasing the Hotaka Single is somewhat of a better alternative.
Ultimately, I can only recommend this album to those who have realized that that catchy tune during "Virtuosity" was Juno Reactor, and other soon-to-be fans. As a fan, this is nothing that hasn't been heard before, and thus, unless you really want to show your support to Juno Reactor, I would say this is a pass. Those who would like to catch Juno Reactor's new song, should check out the Hotaka Single

Customer Reviews:
An odd "best of"........2005-07-26
An odd compilation obstinately listed as a best of Juliana Hatfield but decidingly avoiding her early material, "Gold Stars" is nonetheless a good introduction to Hatfield's music and essential for fans due to the presence of seven unreleased tracks and one rarity.
From her early records (all tragically out of print courtesy of Atlantic Records), there's one track from her debut, "Hey Babe" (standout "Everybody Loves Me But You"), a pair each from "Become What You Are" (singles "My Sister" and "Spin the Bottle") and "Only Everything" (single "Universal Heart-Beat" and "Fleur de Lys"). These are fairly representative of the albums and should provide a good introduction to her early material for anyone not familiar with it, and while I could complain readily about the track selection, it is what it is.
The album also includes two tracks from her rejected album, "God's Foot". Atlantic refused to release the album, Hatfield tried desparately to reclaim it and failed, this is the first legitimate release of any of it. If these songs are evidenced, the album was filled with detailed arrangements and phenomenal songwriting. Hatfield felt it was her best work, and its failure led to her moving to independent labels.
From her time on the indie labels comes one from the EP "Please Do Not Disturb" (the superb, powerful "Sellout") and two each from "Bed" ("Live It Up" and "Sneaking Around"), "Beautiful Creature" ("Somebody is Waiting For Me" and "Cry in the Dark") and "Total System Failure" ("Houseboy" and "My Protegee"). This is where I really feel quite contentious by the material selected-- a best of without the breathtaking ballads "Trying Not To Think About It" (from "Please Do Not Disturb") and "Close Your Eyes" (from "Beautiful Creature") seems a bit artificial, and certainly "Bed" outtake "Anemia" (released on the extremely rare Japanese release of that record) is among her best in my assessment, but this is all opinion, and these are decent tracks reasonably representative of the albums.
The remainder of the recording is two covers-- The Police's "Every Breath You Take" as a churning alt-rock guitar-driven piece and a relatively straight cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart"-- and four unreleased tracks from 2001 recording sessions. Remarkably, I didn't find any of these four to be particularly intriguing, although "Your Eyes" is probably my favorite of them.
All in all, a reasonable introduction to Hatfield, though I'd dive straight into "Become What You Are" or "Beautiful Creature" (if you're a bit weird) rather than getting this.
This girl make me fly.......2004-09-03
She is rebel, she is intellectuall , she is romantic, she is ingenue, she is ironic, , every song is composed of these elements and its difficult to find a composer like her because the rest of the "woman who rock" just have one or two of the elements i mention but not juliana, she have it all you want to rock? Juliana gives you rock, you feel romantic? Juliana can sing about it, for every state of mind in this album you gonna find in Juliana your soulmate.
HM
A mixture of the old, the newer and the newest.......2003-02-20
I know a lot of people have criticized Gold Stars because it's not the compilation of hits they expected. Indeed, Juliana put some new music on this cd and some songs that might not be considered "greatest hits," but I think the cd nicely captures her array of sounds. It's a great cd, even if it's not truly what one might expect. A lot of fans want to hear Juliana's old stuff and others want to hear her new stuff, and as the saying goes, "You can't please all the people..." She tries to please both sides, and give some new music to boot.
The sound of this cd varies so much, it's really a pleasure to listen to, as it takes the listener on a ride first chronologically through Juliana's career, then melodically through her different styles. For anyone who is a Juliana fan or those just listening to her for the first time, Gold Stars is a great choice.
Im turned on........2002-08-07
Upon first glance at the tracklist I realized I knew nothing after track 5. But curious about her later work I bought it and am very happy I did. I found all her songs up through the 2 covers to be just what I hoped for. It all starts out very "chick rocky" then starts to mellow as things play on. Good cover choices. New songs are not as good as the rest, but good. Of the songs I didn't know, I really like "Live it up" and "Houseboy". Both good JH rockers. So sure, it may be missing a few songs like all "hits" collections are, but whats here is 20 tracks that sound as good as she looks.
What an odd album........2002-07-24
Considering how many wonderful songs Juliana Hatfield has in her catalogue that hardly anyone has ever listened to, this bizarre little collection makes no sense to me. Is it a singles collection? Then where is "What A Life"? Is it a "Best of"? Then where's "Don't Rush Me", "Addicted", "Might Be In Love", "I Got No Idols", "Choose Drugs", "Little Pieces", "Cool Rock Boy", "President Garfield", "Daniel", "Feelin' Massachusetts", and pretty much the entirety of "Bed"? Is it a bumper for the tiny "Please Do Not Disturb" release? Then where's "Get Off", "Trying Not To Think About It", "As If Your Life Depended On It", "Give Me Some Of That", and "Edge Of Nowhere"? Is it a proper release of "God's Foot"? Obviously not, nor is it a later day work compelation (where's Juliana's Pony?).So what do we have? Some singles, some B-sides, some bonus tracks, some covers, and a teeny bit of new material. Well look, if you're a casual Hatfield follower who missed these tracks on albums, I'd have to recommend it. You get all of the major radio hits, some lesser known gems, and a decent sampling of a great performer who's gone mighty underappreciated for a lot of years. Beyond that, I imagine all the hardcore fans have this stuff already, in one form or another. I do have to say though, that an affordable two-disc assemblage (think Rhino's "The Very Best of Elvis Costello") would have solved a lot of this release's problems.

Customer Reviews:
Paula Frazer is the best singer ever!.......2003-10-09
This cd is a collection of acoustic recordings that Paula did from 1992-2002. She has the most beautiful, mesmerizing voice--and it sounds so nice with just an acoustic guitar backing. Also the cd comes with some great videos of Paula singing in what looks to be the doorway of an apartment in s.f.. She does some material from her old band Tarnation (which 2 cd's you should own if you don't already) and some new songs. Imagine Patsy Cline singing the soundtrack to a Sergio Leone film...this is highly original music!

Album Description
This anthology brings the best of The Walkabouts many albums on Virgin, Glitterhouse, and Innerstate together on one CD. 15 great songs, nearly 80 full minutes of classic Walkabouts music featuring guests like Brian Eno, Peter Buck and the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra. All in a beautiful 8 panel digipak with an 8 page booklet containing many unseen photos and detailed liner notes by noted music critic Jud Cost. Fronted by the dual singer/songwriter team of Carla Torgerson and Chris Eckman, the Walkabouts create some of the most achingly beautiful music to ever come out of Seattle. Innerstate Records. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
FINALLY AVAILABLE IN THE US!.......2002-12-18
Those of us who have been collecting Walkabouts recordings since the early days on PopLlama and SubPop, know the true merit of this band. There is no group of musicians today that more closely represent the music of America.
If you like your music with a little emotion, great songwriting and find yourself bored with what's playing on most radio stations these days, then buy this CD. If you like your music excellent no matter the genre this is for you. (Also seek out the Chris and Carla recordings too! They're all good.)
Hopefully this collection will stimulate an interest in the Walks so that we can see them tour sometime in our own country. This is one of my top ten releases for 2002.
A Fitting Tribute To One of America's Best Bands!.......2002-11-28
Rather than wax on about how the Walkabouts don't have the recognition they deserve here in the U.S., while they have an army of fans across the big puddle in continental Europe, I'll just stick to the music. WATERMARKS is a collection of the best stuff from this Seattle-based band starting at the beginning of the '90s up until present day taking in all their albums on Glitterhouse/Sub Pop Europe, Virgin, and Innerstate. Most of this material has never before been available on a U.S. domestic release, so WATERMARKS is great for longtime fans and for those just sticking their toes in the pond for the first time. Chris Eckman and Carla Torgerson write GREAT songs full of cinematic atmosphere and late-night, darkside of the street feeling. With roots in moody Americana (and never sharing the hard sound of their early 90s Seattle contemporaries), The Walkabouts musical palette has been widened over the years by their European experiences and associations. Many of these tracks were produced by Victor Van Vugt, most widely known for his work with Nick Cave and Beth Orton. Other songs are guided by Phill Brown, best known for his production work with Talk Talk and since the '60s as engineer for the cream of British rock. Over the years, The Walkabouts have collaborated with artists as diverse as Austrian popstar/multimedia artist/film director Andre Heller and the UK's Tindersticks. WATERMARKS collects the best of the many guest appearances on Walkabouts albums over the years and includes Brian Eno, REM's Peter Buck and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Finally, this set is exquisitely packaged with a giant eight panel digipak and a large full-color booklet. Magnet Magazine columnist Jud Cost writes a complete band history to round out the extensive liner notes. This is one great sounding (and great looking) set that does justice to the long storied career of this wonderful band!!

Album Description
Nathaniel Stookey was born and raised in San Francisco where he studied violin and composition. At seventeen, he was invited by Charles Wuorinen to create a chamber work for the San Francisco Symphony's New and Unusual Music Series, the youngest composer ever to be so honored. Since then, his music has been performed by a broad range of distinguished ensembles, from Turtle Island String Quartet to the Philadelphia Orchestra. Stookey was a Composition Fellow with the Halle Orchestra, under Kent Nagano, from 1993 to 1996 and Composer-in-Residence with the North Carolina Symphony, under Gerhardt Zimmermann, from 2000 to 2003. He has studied with Donald Erb, Andrew Imbrie, George Benjamin, Stephen Jaffe, and Scott Lindroth. Today he lives in San Francisco with his wife and two children. He writes: "As a violinist, string music has always been my touchstone. I have put more of myself into this medium than any other, much as a pianist-composer might be expected to channel his most personal statements into works for his own instrument. But the piano can be a world unto itself, while the strings are most often thought of in the plural - as a family. Growing up in the orchestra, we plucked together, bowed together, and rose together on the conductor's cue. For us, the pay-off was that, in behaving like a single instrument, we eventually came to sound like one. This record is a result of a decade of collaborations with string players, from my early twenties to my early thirties. More specifically, it is the culmination of an intensive three-year residency with the North Carolina Symphony, the Ciompi Quartet and the Mallarme Chamber Players, during which all four works included here were performed repeatedly and recorded."
Customer Reviews:
A Tour de Force!.......2005-04-20
PRO: Thrilling and beautiful music for strings that will delight you.
CON: Not enough of it.
It's exciting and modern, with a tinge of Stravinsky influence in there, as well as some straight up classical too.
The CD notes are useful because they explain the history of each piece.
For a 35 year old composer, Stookey has outstanding potential. Look for more from this brilliant violinist and composer.
Sheer musicality.......2005-04-08
Here is a wonderful recording of four pieces by turns witty, thrilling, mercurial, profound and full of hope. Nathaniel Stookey is an optimist, and in these dark days his music makes us optimistic too. This is not facile music, nor is it suitable for a difficult listening hour. It finds a level of seriousness in the tradition of American string quartets, at times shaded by the ochers of a sad Schubert lied, but always there is humor, gaiety pulsing through.

Excelent!.......2005-04-01
The CD is worth the price of admission for the masterful rendition of the Zapotec song Tortuga. On top of that you add soulful renditions of La Llorona, Flor de Azalea & the dimensional warp provided by the 16th century Sephardic songs, and you have a pretty cool album.
