Album Description
This is the fourth album from the band that gave you "Waiting For A Star To Fall" and "Oh Girl." Written and recorded over the past year, THE WONDERGROUND is a story of miracles in a relationship. Shannon and George have divorced. They then proceeded to write their way to a lasting friendship. The songs are about the journey; alternately cathartic, joyous, and reflective. Musically, it's like peering into a personal journal of this time.

Out of the game to long.......2007-02-23
The music and arrangment were decent, nothing to write home about really. But lyrically this album was terrible.
wow. Wow. WOW........2006-04-29
I received this CD from the creators yesterday after only two or three days wait. I admit that I was nervous, given that Reel Life is still in my desert island collection (along with such disparate elements as Love's Forever Changes and Denzil's Pub). This bias worked against the new CD on the first spin---although I found the first few songs catchy, the rest of the CD only made for good background music.
Now, less than 24 hours and 5 spins later, almost all of the tunes stand out. While I don't know if this CD will make my desert island collection (I've changed A LOT since I fell in love with Reel Life), this is still one of the best smart pop CDs I've ever heard. And it only gets better with each listen, hence the title of this review.
I hear echoes of artists as disparate as The Carpenters, Bourgeois Tagg, Throwing Muses, Toy Matinee, Shawn Colvin, and Enya in this album (plus some influences that I cannot pin down), but the songs and lyrics still show that signature (and singular) Boy Meets Girl heart, mind, and soul.
Hopefully I won't have to wait 18 years for the next installment! (My advice to those interested in getting the CD is to order it straight from the artists---Amazon just cannot seem to get the CD in stock. Plus you give the artists a bigger chunk of the profits, and isn't that how it should be?)
(Addendum: After another 5 listens, followed by a return listen to Reel Life, I must say that this album is actually as good as the former release. Who knows how good this CD will sound in 18 years!)
Better Than The Average Adult Contemporary Pop........2004-08-19
After a long hiatus and a divorce, George and Shannon, the songwriting team behind Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me", have return in fine form. "The Wonderground" is, indeed, about their divorce and their ability to move forward as friends. Thus, the album contains insights into separation, loneliness and loss on an adult scale. The music is lush and welcoming--like visiting with an old friend you haven't seen in a while (heck, technically, we haven't heard from Boy Meets Girl since their 1988 smash "Reel Life"). This is definitely worth buying if you are a Boy Meets Girl fan and, even if you are not, there are plenty of great melodies and lyrics. This is one of the better albums from 2003, and had I not looked them up on a whim I would not have even known about it! As a side note, unfortunatly their first two albums appear to be out of print or very hard to find. I do have their "Reel Life" on cd, and I used to have their debut on cd (but I didn't like it and traded it in). After reading their website, it looks like their third album, which was shelved and never released, may get its due on cd through their site. In the meantime, pick up a copy of "The Wonderground" it's great whether you've been through a divorce lately or not.
Very nice.......2004-04-22
I'm also a long time fan of Boy Meets Girl, and still listen to what I think was their first album (the one that Oh Girl was the first track). I love George's voice.
There's lots of good stuff on this album, and it's very introspective and thoughtful. I think my favorite song, at least right now, is Chronic Pain. Everything on it is very light sounding, but there's a lot going on underneath, their lyrics are always beautiful.
A must for R'N'B fans.......2004-04-14
I used to be a great fan of Boy Meets Girl in the late 80's so it was fantastic to here from them again after such a long time. I must honestly say that I didn't expect much when I bought The Wonderground CD, but I was truly shocked by the quality of the album since I first played it. Their sound is as good as ever. Their music has grown older, it sounds clearer now and the lyrics are deeper and better. For those fans who were fans of their soulful music (those powerful drums + guitars + healing voices) this album will be no deception at all. Among the 11 tracks, I choose "Birds of a feather" for its early 70's feeling and "Second Chance" for being a great free-your-heart song, intimate and strong at the same time (much better that "Is Anybody out there in Love?" from the Reel Life album).
Finally I would encourage every BMG fan to write to them in their website. George and Shannon are the most wonderful people!!They would write you back and let you know their appreciation.

Different...but good........2002-05-20
Having heard the music of South Indian (carnatic) mandolin player U. Srinivas (and he plays electric mandolin), I just had to check out his northern (Hindustani) counterpart. First of all, his mandolin isn't exactly like the typical western mandolin. It is a little bigger, probably what we in the west would call a mandola (not as big as a mandocello though) so the sound is more bass heavy.
Mozumder takes on the rainy season raga "Desh" and does quite a nice job with it. He captures the mood of the raga nicely the anticipation and longing for the rain from the release of the heat. He is a patient player, and one that slowly develops the raga, not relying on so many of the flashier current trends in Indian music. If for nothing else but originality, this CD is certainly worthy of a place in the collection of an Indian music fan or a mandolin afficianado. The refreshing thing about it is, that its not gimmicky. The CD doesn't wear thin after repeated listenings. I've had it for several years and still frequently listen to it.
I also believe with mandolin being more familiar to the western aural palette, that this CD is easier for westerners to digest, but their is certainly enough substance for those knowledgeable about Indian music. There are also two dhuns (folk tunes) on this disc, so the music is a bit "lighter" if you will and not as long and heavy as a 70 minute sitar recital.
For creativeness, style and good playing, you can't lose with this disc.
tranquilizing rainy day ragas.......1999-11-17
This music is tranquil but not sleepy. The ragas kind of remind me of old John Fahey (though of course the Indian subcontinent put out this kind of music a couple millennia before Blind Joe Death cut his first E-string). If you still reach for Cooder-Bhatt's "Meeting By The River," get a hold of this recording and rejoice. Quietly.
A Stirring Work.......1998-12-11
Mandonlin Dreams is a beautiful, evocative experience. The indian Mandolin sounds quite different from both the sitar and the western mandolin, and has a nice rich sound. Just turn out the lights, put it on, and let your worries slip away.

The mbira, a thumb piano from Zimbabwe, is an instrument used for trance induction and healing--it soothes the soul, accompanies storytellers, and inspires children and elders to dance. On this recording the mbira is in the hands of a master, Ephat Mujuru, who plays ancient traditional songs and his own compositions. Dumisani Maraire joins in on "Chirombo/Mhondoro," playing hosho (gourd shakers) and singing. On "Chamakanda Ephat" Mujuru plays mbira and tells, in English, the humorous folktale of the man with big ears, a story that teaches the value of honesty and integrity. The solo instrumentals on this release really shine--on the surface they are simple and repetitive, but they subtly shift and quietly reveal depths of mystery in the music. --Jeff Grubb
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest Memory of Ephat.......2002-05-04
This CD is a perfect introduction to Mbira music, one of Zimbabwe's great gifts to the world. Ephat Mujuru was a master. He set the standard for all mbira players in Zimbabwe until his tragic death in 2001. Thus album will give the listener a good idea of why Ephat was so loved, and how he used his music to bring people together.

Never mind the combover ... this album, all in Breton, is awesome. Especially notable are "Ar Gwezenn Avalou" (The Apple Tree) and "Ar Bloavezh Mat" (The New Year). Paul has an easy, clear singing voice, and the instrumentation complements it nicely.

100% PUERTO RICAN 0% CUBAN.......2003-02-14
MR. Martinez seems to be confused or ignorant to say that this
music has any pint of Cuban in it. This album has absolutely
no Cuban influence to it. Songs like Aguinaldo Jibaro and Seis
Con Decima have strong Spanish influences while Morena, Monta
Mi Guagua blends Spanish & African traditions NOT CUBAN. The album features "pure" traditional music they are bombas played
with barril drums, maracas, guiros, and cua. The plenas are
played with panderos, maracas, and guiros and the aguinaldos
played with maracas and guiros while most songs have the Puerto Rican national instrument- The cuatro guitar. These bombas and plenas are not a la Tito Puente where they sound like they have a mambo influence to them.
A celebration of Puerto Rican music.......2000-04-05
the music and songs are the true essence of Puerto Rico's musical uniqueness. unfortunately most people equate merengue to Puerto Rico. But our music is a unique blend of African, native Puerto rican AND Cuban influences.
The basic frame of Puerto Rican folk music is presented.......1998-06-28
If you've never heard typical Puerto Rican music and would like to get acquainted with it, this is your CD. The sounds of the Afro-Rican rhythyms are strong, undiluted, with raw energy and force. The first bomba "Bambulae" shows the African tribal chant and response element, encased in a powerful drum and percussion frame. The presence of no other instruments provide an inkling of how early slaves released stress and the tribulations of their situation. Dance to it and feel free. Jíbaro music is poignant and nostalgic. "Yo le canto a la montaña" has the best singer and composer, but the "aguinaldo" to John the Baptist contains my favorite jíbaro rhythym, reminiscent of roast pig, Christmas carrolling, and family gatherings. The cuatro fretwork is not as intricate as I'm used to (I play that instrument), but it sounds like we play it in the country side when we gather impromptu, no holds barred in creativity to play. Let me suggest "Melodía Tropical", if you want more of Puerto Rican folk music, after you've heard this CD. Look for CD's from the Cepeda Family for Afro-Rican music. They're one of the most famous exponents with generations of musicians living to preserve the African heritage in the Puerto Rican musical psyche. The group Mapeyé, for jíbaro music, stands alone. Their cuatro work is astounding, without dubbing or mixing in the recording. They sound in the CD as they do in live performances. The depth of their compositions and the feeling of the "trovadores" is genuine and heartfelt. If you understand Spanish and know about Puerto Rico, you'll find the lyrics contemporaneous and relevant to our identity. Clinging to the traditions, but looking to the future. Wow! I've written too much, but I hope to give someone the chance to experience folk music that is not mentioned too much. Puerto Rico is famous for salsa and merengue artists, but the folk element is largely unknown. Sample it and enjoy!!
