Donald Fagen's 1982 solo debut extends the sleek, smart pop craft of his work with Steely Dan into the realm of the concept album, taking the Dan's penchant for intricate plotting, evocative narrative voices, and allusive imagery to the logical next step. Fagen's connective thread is futurist nostalgia for the "New Frontier" as anticipated from the prosperous vantage point of late-'50s America. He romanticizes a brave new world of technology in the sultry diorama of "I.G.Y.," celebrating the coming glories of the Atomic Age. He then filters that view through his own suburban adolescence--a would-be seduction in a fallout shelter, the siren song of a graveyard-shift jazz DJ, a not-quite-hard-boiled noir adventure ("The Goodbye Look") that borrows its title from an early '60s Ross MacDonald mystery. Suchness of the pre-Dallas Sixties.......2007-07-21

With all of the 5 star reviews on this disc, it has probably all been said.

The key for me is that this album just dead on captures the sixties before JFK was blown away in Dallas.

Parties in bomb shelters, Ruby Baby -- "race music" written by Leiber and Stoller, white guys, smoothed up by the Donald himself, Hearing AM music broadcast from the Delta in New Jersey, the "goodbye look," white guy begins to understand racism, Miami as an exotic, far away tropical locale.

But that's just the start. Fagen also nails the prevailing pop music sounds of the time without a touch of self-consiousness. "Goodbye Look" nails Bossa Nova, which was breaking large at the time in the U.S. The line "WJAZ" from Nightfly song just like an early sixties promo for a radio station and "Walk Between the Raindrops," which pays homage to both guitar-organ-drums combos that were getting hot via Wes Montgomery and the then exotic harmonies of groups like the Four Freshmen.

Someone in the Smithsonian should use this disc to organize a auditory retrospective of the early sixties. It is that evocative!

Ok, let me just start by saying-wow! I don't care who you are or what kind of music you're into, you need to check this CD out.
I didn't think it could get any better than the wonderful sound of Steely Dan, but when Donald Fagen set out to create his first solo album released in 1982, I was proven wrong. This compilation of 8 cool Fagen beats is irresistable, and what a great image for an album look-late night DJ playing these jazzy bits all night long, aka "The Nightfly". I guess Fagen himself summed it up best, "The songs on this album represent certain fantasies that might have been entertained by a young man growing up in the remote suburbs of a Northeastern city during the late 50's and early 60's, I. E., one of my general height, weight and build."
This masterpiece begins with "I.G.Y."(International Geophysical Year). Of all the songs I've ever heard, this one's got one of the coolest, jazziest tunes, with key synthesizers and upbeat lyrics. This song's got such a jaunty little tune, you almost don't need the lyrics, but of course they're great. Definitely my favorite track.
The tempo picks up slightly with "Green Flower Street", and then drops down for jazzy interludes of "Ruby Baby" and "Maxine". "New Frontier" is fast paced, setting the tone for flagship, "The Nightfly". Here Fagen entertains the fantasy of an independent radio station, late night 'WJAZ, with jazz and conversation.' "The Goodbye Look" is a close second favorite of mine vying for attention with xylophones straight out of Havana, and another archanic story brought to you by Fagen's keen ability to write intriguing lyrics. The Nightfly is wrapped up with upbeat "Walk Between Raindrops" who's 1950's makeup is uncharacteristic of Fagen but great fun.
All in all, this is a CD which just can't be passed up. It only contains 8 tracks, but these are so good that you don't need more. And don't be fooled by this album's debut year either, its way before it's time and simply one of the best albums I've ever heard. It needs to be checked out!

Unequivocally...the BEST album ever recorded!.......2007-04-13

Quite simply, fellow aficianadoes{s}....This effort by Monsieur Fagen and friends, is the BEST RECORDED MUSIC that, I have ever heard! This album has been lovingly and finely crafted by one of the more under appreciated, aural artists of the last quarter, twentieth century! Nightfly, should be required listening for anyone even remotely concerned with audio; just to "show 'em HOW IT'S DONE!" Bravo, Donald,...BRAVO!

Steely Donald takes on 1950's Americana.......2007-03-20

The Nightfly marked Donald Fagen's return to the recording studio following the post-Gaucho Steely Dan breakup. The overall sound is very keyboard-heavy in typical Fagen fashion, and his lyrics are primarily set during the prosperous Eisenhower-era 1950's. Some of the residual Gaucho sound is still present on "Greenflower Street" and the album's title track. However, most of the album sways back and forth between a more contemporary sound ("New Frontier" and "I.G.Y.") and a sound that harkens back to days gone by ("Maxine" and "Walk Between The Raindrops"). Fagen even takes on calypso in the light-hearted "The Goodbye Look". Overall, fans of early Steely Dan will likely be disappointed, but those who enjoyed the Katy Lied/Royal Scam/Gaucho years should feel right at home.

NIGHT FLY Has Flown?.......2007-06-14

I sure wish I knew what this product is. I've looked everywhere for it, but no one seems to know of a dual disk on this title. Was this a limited edition?

NIGHT FLY would be a prime candidate for a dual disk edition with 5.1 surround and all that noise, because it is a solid and layered recording. So I would alert the record company to make this more widely available or give us more information as to how we could get it!!

Blank & Jones also know as Gorgeous have created another sure to be hit Progressive Trance masterpiece. The duo have kept with their singnature sound.
