    5 out of 5 stars Pre-Digital Electronic Music.......2006-08-24

I have the original lp of this album(it came in clear vinyl) which was recorded in SQ quadrophonic sound! The early U.S. release on CD doesn't even come close. I only wish it could be remastered using SACD or Dolby Surround like some of todays CD's or even DVD Audio. But, even on CD this is one of the best early electronic music masterpeices!

5 out of 5 stars A very sophisticated recording of electronic music.......2006-06-20

This 1975 album is, in my estimation, nearly singular in the world of electronic music due to its sheer complexity. In fact, this album by American electronic composer Larry Fast is much closer to progressive rock than Berlin School electronica for example - there is just a lot going on in each of these compositions.

The six tracks on the album range in length from 2'58" to 12'50" and feature a range of tones and dynamic contrasts. Another interesting aspect of the music, and I never expected to discuss this in a review of an electronic composition, is the abundant use of melodies, harmonies, and most importantly both rhythmic and melodic counterpoint. In fact, it is amazing what Larry achieved with just the use of a mini-moog, an Oberheim Polyphonic, and a Mellotron 400. In fact, it makes me wonder what it would have sounded like if he had scored these complicated synthesizer pieces for rock instruments, including a full drum kit.

Interestingly, Larry's link with prog rock is not as tenuous as one might think with his being an electronic composer and he struck up a good working relationship with the prog band Nektar around this time. His excellent work can be heard on Nektar's Recycled album (1975).

This remastered album features restored cover art and excellent sound quality, along with some skimpy liner notes.

This album is very highly recommended to those electronica fans who want something a little more varied than the typical fare. Also recommended are two albums by Isao Tomita including Snowflakes are Dancing (1974) and The Tomita Planets (1976).

5 out of 5 stars from out of nowhere.......2006-11-09

Actually Relay are a four piece rock band from Philly, PA and yes, they can kick Rocky's butt. I had the pleasure of seeing relay live for the first time, in DC , and became an instant fan. I had no idea who they were or what they sounded like, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I heard them channel the spirits of Joy Divison, Kitchens of Distinction, Lush, and MBV that evening and was even more pleased when I put their cd --this cd into my car system going home. Think of the music of all the bands I just mentioned but think of the tempo and energy being pumped up twice as high. They have a firm knowledge of the influences from back in the day while taking those influences into the now, into the future. Hopefully more people will discover this band and hopefully Relay will have more to offer in a world full of lackluster, far too egocentric rock and roll posers.

5 out of 5 stars How am I only hearing this group now?!?.......2006-11-01

This is a record I took a chance on and was not disappointed. I think I saw their name in a magazine ad for their label, Bubblecore, and was intrigued by the description- something along the lines of "swirling, shoegaze, keyboard psych-rock". I've been really getting into the so-called "shoegaze" bands, both modern groups and the originators, so I made a mental note to check them out.
I heard a the song "Context" on the Bubblecore website and was totally blown away. It was like the band reached into my brain and pulled out the sounds I've been waiting to hear. I can see where Relay could be categorized with other shoegazer bands, but there are some notable differences. They share a penchant for layered, effects-laden guitars and swirling keyboards, BUT... These songs are generally more up-tempo and propulsive than say, Slowdive. They don't have the tendency toward gloomy depression or any kind of gothic overtones either. If anything, they take the ideas that originated in the late 80's and early 90's and carry them forward- way forward. I should cut this short, because I'm starting to gush. I would certainly recommend this disc to anyone who likes intelligent, interesting guitar music. Also check out their previous EP called Type/Void. I think the full-length is stronger, but the EP should not be missed either. Since I discovered that I could actually find decent music on Amazon, I've discovered a lot of great music I wouldn't have heard otherwise. If you're reading this, check out a record called Constance by a group called Southpacific, also a German band called Couch that is doing really cool instrumental stuff. Silver by Jesu is one of the awesomest records I've heard in a while...And remember there's more to this music than My Bloody Valentine- if you haven't heard Slowdive, check them out, especially Souvlaki. I know there's many others I'm forgetting here as well.
I can't believe I'm the first person to review this record- I sincerely hope others will also take a chance on this relatively unknown band.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly comfortable on the street........2005-05-04

I found this by accident. Actually, make that "happy accident." It never ceases to amaze me how much of what I like has its roots in Barcelona, and this group is no exception. The whole time I was listening to it I was thinking "where have I heard this before..." Then I read the liner notes and realized "Barcelona." The CD captures the essence of what it is to walk through Barrio Gotico, down the Ramblas, or though barrio chino at night. A little edgy, a little out there. Perfectly comfortable on the street.

      5 out of 5 stars going strong.......2002-12-14

After a awesome debut album (2002), I wondered if they could keep up the same level of brilliance in their second CD. To my delight, they did! My record/CD collection is fast approaching 1,000 entires, and I would place anything Brazzaville easily into the top 100.

5 out of 5 stars Fine wine and cigars at night.......2002-01-13

Perhaps best known to the public for their haunting ska-raggae piece "Old man Dub" currently being used by the Ford Motor Company for the 2002 Thunderbird commercial ("The race"), Brazzaville's music hits at many levels.
I was initially drawn to the piece used in the commercial, being a great fan of reggae that features a horn section and bought the CD expecting more of the same in the album. I actually was quite surprised at the breadth of the music. To call it jazz or ska or reggae doesn't quite capture the full richness of the music. "Air Mail" and "Foreign Disaster days" do have that jazzy feel to them - but a very hip modern jazzy feel - like it belongs in a South Beach Cafe on a Friday night. Precise guitar work that betrays a very Les Paul heritage. "Sandman" & "Casa Batllo" takes on a more samba or Cuban Jazz flow with crisp keyboard work. While "Boeing" & "4am Osaka" have heavier guitar work with a rock and roll edge. It is definately and interesting journey - song to song with enough variety to make the listener pay attention to the music.

"Old man Dub" has tight reggae riffs to make Burning Spear proud - now I that I have listened to it, I think an album that reproduced that genre from song to song would have been a tad monotonous. All in all a very entertaining album that takes you some very well sophisticatedly executed pieces that never leave you bored. Like a fine a wine and good cigar, this album leaves you a better person for the experience. Full marks.

5 out of 5 stars There's no one like Bob Delevante!.......2004-10-23

This first time I ever became aware of Bob Delevante was when I was working on my computer with GAC playing on the TV in the background, specifically "The Edge of Country." What turned me around and made me ignore my computer was his video for "Penny Black."

I quickly sought and ordered his "Porchlight" CD (Relay Records) and I have to say, it is one sweet album. Ever since I have been trying to classify a guy who cannot be classified. He is that unique. I'll try though (and fail): take equal parts John Prine, Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, Johnny Cash and even some Don McLean. Getting the picture? It isn't easy, but here's a clue: it is no surprise at all that he does a duet on the album with Emmy Lou Harris (a haunting and beautiful song, "Why Don't You Love Me").

This album is what Dylan's "Nashville Skyline" could have been but wasn't. Bob Delevante is a consummate musician, lyricist and poet.

If you are tired of slick, glamorous "pop" country and want to hear a truly original voice/songwriter/musician, someone with soul, a poet, an artist, grab this CD and add it to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Porchlight is a MUST OWN!!!!.......2001-11-16

Add this one to your collection and you'll be playing it over and over. Great job!!

      4 out of 5 stars Porchlight - Incredible.......2000-01-10

Delevante's lyrics are deep and inspirational. It's one of the only CD's I can listen to cover to cover. After listening to the CD, you will have the urge to play it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for your CD collection!.......2000-01-05

You have to hear it to appreciate the talent and artistic ability of Bob Delevante...incredible lyrics! Expecially liked the song, "Why don't you love me," with Emmylou Harris.

      4 out of 5 stars New versions - not a "best of".......2004-01-04

Made in UK in 2002, Serial# VP272CD, Playing Time 56:11

It's been years since we've been treated to a new album by synthesizer wizard Larry Fast...

This CD presents new "interpretations" (recorded in early 2002) of older material, except for track 6, "Flight Of The Looking Glass", originally released on "Audion", which on here has been recorded on tour in May 2000.

I must admit that all the tracks sound completely different to me, mostly because the technology has changed drastically over the last decades...

The tracks featured here are presented in their ORIGINAL chronological order: the first 2 originally on "Electronic Realizations...", then track 3 from "Sequencer" (oh, I would have LOVED to hear a new version of "Classical Gas" !!!); tracks 4,5 and 6 were originally performed on "Audion", and the other 4 tracks on "Metropolitan Suite".

The sounds and textures presented here are rich, thick, and somewhat more "jovial" than their original counterparts.

This CD makes a great addition of the SYNERGY catalog, whether you're a long-time fan, or want to get introduced to Larry Fast's genre. This release would have been a PERFECT example to demonstrate the possibilities of Surround Sound, especially compared to mainstream rock.

Pick it up, krank it up, and be prepared to be teleported into space for an hour! Oxygen sold separately...
