Like Wicked, this show is a girl-friendly extravaganza; the main difference--and it's a big one--is that the score of Legally Blonde is better. Based on the hit Reese Witherspoon movie, the zippy, frothy show tells the story of SoCal, pink-loving sorority girl Elle Woods, who enrolls at Harvard Law and goes on to prove that appearances can be deceiving. The opening number, "Omigod You Guys," gives an idea of what the Broadway-pop score by Laurence O'Keefe (Bat Boy--The Musical) and Nell Benjamin is up to, embracing its over-the-top cheer with goofily infectious energy. Sure, a couple of numbers feel a bit derivative (the show with the witches has "Popular," this one has "Positive"), and the Celtic detour ("Ireland") is rather puzzling, but overall the songs are firing on all cylinders. Just check out the use of a marching band on "What You Want" for instance. Laura Bell Bundy (Amber von Tussle in Hairspray) is a charming Elle, and she delivers numbers such as "So Much Better" with the requisite elan. But this is not a one-woman show, and Bundy is surrounded by a crack team, including the endearing Christian Borle as Elle's love interest Emmett, power-piped Orfeh as hairdresser Paulette and up-and-comer Leslie Kritzer as Delta Nu's Serena. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Legally Blonde-So Much Fun.......2007-07-23
I have tickets to see this show on Broadway in September, so I have been anxiously awaiting for the CD to be released as I like to be familiar with the tracks before seeing it on stage. Let's just say this album lives up to the hype! Laura Bell Bundy's voice is phenomenal, especially in "So Much Better". This is a must-have to add to your Broadway collection.
A great surprise..........2007-07-20
When I saw this show at The Palace, I wasn't expecting much, but "Legally Blonde" was my favorite show of the season. Jerry Mitchell's direction is amazing, the cast is perfect, and the music is fantastic. The CD captures the excitement of the score perfectly, and everyone sounds great. The opening number "Oh my God..." is hilarious, and I also love the end of Act One "So Much Better." The title song is sweet and smart. This is a great recording of a wonderful show.
Exceeds Expectations.......2007-07-20
I saw the show on Broadway in May, and by the end of "Serious," I knew I would have to have the cast recording as soon as it was released. I have had this CD on repeat in my car since the day it arrived. I have never known another show's lyrics to be as clever and catchy. The writing is brilliant.
I did not expect to love this musical as much as I do, but now, I am sharing it with everyone I know.
Very Good!.......2007-07-19
I was surprised I really like this one. Its VERY GOOD! I can't wait to go see it.
Much Better Than I Thought It Would Be..........2007-07-19
I didn't have high expectations for this album, if I'm being completely honest. I thought the movie, while fun, was a little unoriginal, and add that to a relatively inexperienced cast and my expectations were low. The album jumped way past my expectations to one that has had a spot in my CD rotation for over a week now.
When I first listened to it, two shows came to mind, Wicked and The Wedding Singer. This soundtrack is a combination of those two shows, almost exactly, in my mind. The marketing and target demographics are similar to Wicked, so there should be no doubt there. It took a very similar path as The Wedding Singer, even hiring the same "bad guy" with Richard H. Blake playing that role well in both productions, although drastically overshadowed in both.
For the role of Elle Woods, they went to Wicked and took Laura Bell Bundy, who was the understudy to Kristin Chenoweth in the role of Glinda. Seeing as how it is easily believable that Glinda could have been a Delta Nu, they also dipped back into the Wicked pool and hired Annaleigh Ashford to play Margot. They played the Delta Nu sisters in throughout the show, making them, on the whole, basically an additional character in the cast.
The CD isn't perfect. Some of the songs are a little tedious. I could have done without Ireland (let alone a reprise of it), or Whipped Into Shape. However, the pluses far outweigh the negatives on this album. The very first number is an engaging, almost obnoxiously upbeat song entitled "Omigod You Guys" and it plays perfectly to set the tone. Christian Borle provides a nice steadying influence in the musical, making sure that it doesn't get too far out of hand and the chemistry between the two sounds excellent on songs like "Chip On Her Shoulder", "Take It Like A Man", and "Legally Blonde" which is a particularly emotional number in the production.
This show is more than just the light fluff of The Wedding Singer, without quite reaching the meaning or appeal of Wicked, but still entirely worth the buy and without a doubt worth listening to.

The Bacon Brothers say it best on this hilarious CD's title track: "Poultry in motion is a beautiful thing." So is a record that grabs you by the funnybone from its opening (the Seldom Herd's "Cows") and doesn't let go till the final note is clucked. Sandra Boynton, whose illustrated board books have become as much a part of every toddler's reading list as Mother Goose, makes a convincing case here that authors can succeed brilliantly as very silly songwriters. Meryl Streep, Laura Linney, Kevin Kline, Natasha Richardson, and fourteen other performers all qualify as contenders for king and queen of the coop, and they whoop it up enough to guarantee the most enjoyable sing-along ever. --Tammy La Gorce

So Fun.......2007-06-28
This is great music to dance to with your kids. The songs are really amusing and they have great rhythms for dancing. My kids and I have had a lot of fun with this cd.
What a great bunch of books & CDs.......2007-04-08
I work with infants and they LOVE it!!! The adults think it's great! Hilarious!!
Do yourself a favor and get them all.
LOVE it!!.......2007-02-23
My son just got "Dog Train" for his first birthday. I don't know what his opinion on it is yet, but I love it! I love it so much that I ran out to buy a couple more as gifts for my son's playgroup friends. That's when I saw "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Rhinosaurus Tap". I bought both and am completely in love with "Philadelphia Chickens". The songs are really catchy and grown-up enough sounding that I don't get that crazy feeling that I get after listening to other kiddies CDS over and over. Chances are pretty good that I'll be buying a bunch of them as gifts too!
My 2 year loves this CD.......2007-02-18
My 2 year is loves animals and since this CD has a different song for every animal she loves it. She also loves the Belly button song since we have the Belly Button book. I would recomend it for 2 and up. We bought it when she was younger but only recently started requesting the 'Cow Music'
Off beat fun.......2007-01-05
This album is very funny! The songs are humorous and dramatic which makes it PERFECT for my little performer. And as an added bonus, there are some surprising voices added to the mix. However, this is not the standard children's album. It's quite eclectic and off beat. You will "get it" much more if you know Ms. Boynton's books.

Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez
Customer Reviews:
fun but flawed.......2007-05-07
in 1994, the lion king came out and broke records. the film itself took in an astounding 312 million dollars in the us. that makes it the highest grossing hand-drawn animated feature EVER (an accomplishment that will never be toppled since niether disney nor dreamworks is producing hand drawn features any more). that year at the oscars it also won two awards for the musical score and best original song (three of its songs were nominated0. so how does the music really stand up compared to other disney features.
first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5
I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5
BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5
HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5
CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5
SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5
so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.
despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.
Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09
This is hands down one of the best Disney soundtracks ever! Elton John came up with some killer tunes here! The opening song always give me goosebumps!
Great Album!.......2007-03-31
This album is great, but I can't seem to find the part where simba and scar fight at the end. i was thinking it would be on "King of Pride Rock" but its not... so i'm a little disapointed in that. (thats one of my favorite scenes for some reason) other than that, i love the songs.
Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14
The songs with lyrics are cute and memorable, but the strength of this album is in the last four songs. Listen to "This Land" and it instantly transports you back to the scene with Simba and Mufasa laying under the stars, and then to the scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. Listen to "...To Die For" and you feel an intense claustrophobia as you relive Mufasa's last moments and Simba's discovery of his father. Listen to Under The Stars and you can practically hear Simba screaming, "You said you'd always be there for me!" And when King Of Pride Rock comes along, you can feel your heart swell as you see Simba take his place on Pride Rock. The instrumentals are incredible works of art that never fail to draw intense emotion.
Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16
I'm writing this review not of the release of this Special Edition, but of the music contained within. Disney's release and re-release of products is nothing new. It's one of the reasons that Disney is so strong in the market today. With that said, I have to admit that this is one of the best Disney soundtracks that has ever been cut to a disc. I never owned the original release of this music, so I'm glad that Disney did decide to re-release the original work with a few extras as part of the "The Lion King: Special Edition" release. Everything on here is wonderful, and the score itself was key to the development of the story. Selections such as "King Of Pride Rock" and "To Die For" encompass the emotional ups and downs of this film. Elton John's music is also wonderful on this disc. His most notable offerings are "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." His only downfall is "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," which should have been left to the youngster who performed Simba's singing voice. It comes acrossed as forced by Elton John as he performs it.
The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.
Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.
Highly recommended.

Italian, Spanish, or English: Laura Pausini's edgy, electric vocals are some of the most vibrant in contemporary pop. The endearing diva has been around for more than a decade, but the 2004 disc Escucha found her enjoying a newfound musical independence and worldwide success. Yo Canto is a long-brewing project dear to Pausini's heart: a collection of Italian pop covers spanning her lifetime. As with most of Pausini's releases, the disc is available in Italian and in Spanish. Yo Canto veers from dramatic balladry to fiery rock moments, anchored by Pausini's swooping, powerful vocal work. Several songs will be unfamiliar to fans outside of Italy, but it hardly matters. Pausini makes every moment her own, from the triumphant title track to the bittersweet "Escribeme." She's joined by international rock star Juanes during the lovely, lilting "Mi Libre Cancion." And fellow Italian pop idol Tiziano Ferro joins in for a new take on his brooding 2003 hit, "No Me Lo Puedo Explicar." There are many moments of sublime loveliness here. In other words, just another day in the musical life of Pausini. --Joey Guerra

Outstanding CD - Her Best Yet.......2007-05-13
I first bought a Laura Pausini CD ("The Best of Laura Pausini") about a year ago when I was building up my Italian music collection. I wasn't thrilled with that album or Laura though until I purchased her DVD Live 2001-2002 World Tour (A MUST HAVE!). After that I was hooked and now can appreciate her depth as an artist. She is a hard, hard worker, a perfectionist, and very gifted. She has since become one of my favorites. "Io Canto" for me is her best album yet. Every song on the album, though not written by her (which is normally the case) is a keeper and touches the listener on some level. One word of advise about Laura or any other Italian artist: Many record their albums in both Italian and Spanish versions ("Yo Canto" being the Spanish version in this case). I strongly suggest that you ALWAYS get the Italian version. Even though I speak Spanish and don't speak Italian (yet) somehow something gets lost in the translation.
Not her best.......2007-04-19
This is a good album but not her best. I found it a bit boring. There is no catchy tune on this one like on her previous ones. But is is still pleasant to listen to and her voice is beautiful.
Nice Cover. Great songs.......2007-04-13
No. I do not speak a word of Italian and yes Pausini sounds as if she is yelling at her boyfriend for staying out late with the guys but still this is a great sounding album with some foot stomping tunes that I listened to again and again. If you can have only one Album where you have no idea what they are saying then this is the one for you. Io Canto?? Yes. You can.
LAURA AT HER BEST.......2007-04-04
Laura...sei tornata al meglio con questi "cover" dei grandi cantautori italiani come Cocciante, Bonocuore, Baglioni, Raf.
If you like italian music this is a must. With "covers" from great italian singers like Cocciante, Baglioni among others.

What Suzanne Vega was to the East Coast--working at the intersection of folk and art songs--Laura Veirs has become to the Pacific Northwest. With organic imagery and a sense of open-eyed, open-hearted wonder, her songs seem to hover between the sea and the stars and to take inspiration from each. Though "To the Country" is the undisputed highlight here, featuring a luminous call-and-response with the Cedar Hill Choir and guest guitar from Bill Frisell, Veirs extends her range from the soul groove of the title track (which is also now the name of her band, formerly the Tortured Souls) to the propulsive rock of "Phantom Mountain." Even when her material flirts with preciousness ("Nightingale") or conforms more to folk convention, the musical settings entrance. --Don McLeese
Album Description
Listening to Veirs is like looking up into the night sky and suddenly witnessing a meteor shower: there's something startling and magical, both intimate and awesome, about her songs. The nature-obsessed images she conjures up and the mesmerizing sound she creates are as indelible as the blaze of shooting stars. Her third Nonesuch release is her most beautifully realized, band-oriented yet. Produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Built To Spill), it is by turns haunting, playful, tender, and fierce, embracing everything from machine-driven beats to angelic gospel choirs to fuzzed-out guitars, and driving alt-rock rhythms.
Customer Reviews:
A true artist........2007-04-10
Following 2005's sparklingly lovely "Year of Meteors" is no easy task, but "Saltbreakers" is a resoundingly wonderful return from a musician who has established herself as that rare thing - a true artist.
Here Veirs' inspiration comes from oceanic imagery - in complement to "Meteors" ' geological theme - and it never once feels contrived or forced.
Clear standout is the epic sweep of "To the Country", recorded in Johnny Cash's Nashville cabin, and featuring an eight-person Baptist choir.
All the songs slip their way into your subconscious like loveable but slightly annoying friends.
When you find yourself waking up singing "drink deep, my love" you'll know what I mean.
That means more beautifully imaginative songs, fancy-folk pop, moving lyrics -- and subtle instrumentation.
More of the same, then - but that's no bad thing.
The Seattle singer-songwriter has bottled a winning formula --- and she's sticking to it.
And even, if it all sounds a tad samey, you end up humming along to each tune.
Hauntingly introspective, tender, yet gracefully playful........2007-04-10
Picture Seattle and you'll be bombarded with images of plaid shirts, greasy hair and heads blown open in existential angst, which is a long way from the upbeat bittersweet alt-rock of local singer/songwriter Laura Veirs.
Following the success of 2005's mesmerizing "Year of Meteors", "Saltbreakers" is an artist at her peak. Hauntingly introspective, tender, yet gracefully playful, Veirs delights the ears as much as she pulls on the heartstrings.
Rock's laureate of the great outdoors, Laura Veirs has turned her attention on her sixth album to the watery deep - a metaphor apparently for a stormy year for her on the home front.
Whether or not "Saltbreakers" is intended to complete a trilogy initiated by "Carbon Glacier" in 2003 and 2005's "Year of Meteors", it provides a more than satisfactory sequel. The alternately grave and jaunty piano melodies here are classic Veirs, suffused with her characteristic wide-eyed poise and emotional reticence, and elaborated in chamber-pop style by her band with occasional splashes of strings and horns.
On the title track, she ventures into a rollicking, shanty-like chorus with the guys; for the rest, she remains the ambiguous nature lover, wrestling with wild thoughts in an even wilder landscape.

Consider the curious fate of singer-songwriter Laura Nyro's 1968 big-label bow: though it contained no less than three songs ("Stoned Soul Picnic," "Sweet Blindness," and "Eli's Coming") that became hits (the first two for Fifth Dimension, the last for Three Dog Night), Nyro's own endlessly influential collection barely dented the Top 200. And in an era of supposed pop emancipation and enlightenment, Nyro was booed off the stage at the vaunted Monterey Pop Festival a year earlier. Those facts merely hint at the true gifts and stubborn instincts of an artist who took her cue for hook writing from the Brill Building's prime, then seamlessly fused it to her far-ranging passions for soul, jazz, gospel, and no small amount of personal drama. Carole King was seldom this exotic and compelling, nor Joni Mitchell so pop perfect. "Once It Was Alright Now (Farmer Joe)" even recalls Brian Wilson's most ambitious musical gambits, its suite format playfully interspersing three different tunes and styles, standing the standard verse-chorus-verse form on its head in the bargain. Long a treasured musical touchstone for other artists (Nyro influenced everyone from Phoebe Snow to Tori Amos), this reissued edition now contains beautiful, spare solo demos for "Lu," "Stoned Soul Picnic," and "Emmie" as bonus tacks, along with newly penned liner notes. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Did not know about Timer.......2007-07-24
Eli and the Thirteenth Confession is an example of the superb talent Laura Nyro possessed for blending Tin Pan Alley and the Brill Building. Laura listed herself on the vinyl back cover as "the writer, composer, voices, piano and witness to the confession."
It is widely accepted that her earthy musical style and candid sexual imagery are about her men, e.g. Eli's Coming,""December's Boudoir," and "The Confession."
Her bi-sensual style in "Emmie" has become accepted as an open expression of same-sex attraction on Laura's part. The actual person, if a particular person, is still an intriguing poser.
She was reported to have said at concerts that the song "Timer" was about one of her pets. The opening musical phrasing conjures a pace and the lyrics evoke an imagery of a dog walk.
The song is her musings, e.g. "you're a fine one Timer you got me walking thru the gates of Space"
But, who was "My lady..., she broke down, she got up, she let go."?
Who was the muse for "I like her song and if the song goes minor - I won't mind"
Who is being put on notice in "And Timer knows the lady's gonna love again if you don't love me" and "The lady rambles never more if you love me true" and
"if you love me true - I'll spend my life with you - you and Timer."?
Is it the woman who was the inspiration for "Désiree" on the album Gonna take a miracle?
Is it the young woman silhouetted with Laura on the back cover of the vinyl album jacket of Eli and the Thirteenth Confession?
The songs are a treat, a treasure trove of her musical precocity and lyrical poetry. Even though the silhouetted picture is not on the back of the CD, the re-mastered songs beat the dust off the vinyl.
by Ralph, let's call her Ralph.
CRACKED CASE.......2007-07-03
There's nothing bad to say about Laura Nyro and this fabulous album. But the "new" CD arrived in a cracked case, I won't use this seller again.
quintessential 60s sound!.......2007-05-11
laura nyro hit her stride with this album. she started doing more or most of her background vocals (a nyro trademark) and she was playing her own keyboards with so much fervor. her playing was the perfect match for her unique mezzo voice.
and her voice is the perfect match for her lyrics and melodies. nyro was a prodigious songwriter and it seems odd that she wouldn't have the same size of success with her tunes others had. but that could only be because columbia was always at a loss on how to commodify a woman until mariah carey came along. of course that could be because carey is a willing participant in her own overexposure.
but they always manage to get the best at one time or another--aretha, janis joplin, mahalia jackson, doris day--and laura nyro can join that list many times over with a collection like 'eli'.
I'll Take It To My Desert Island Any Day.......2007-04-05
Alright, I know this review will catch a lot of flack from devoted Laura Nyro fans. First off I think Eli & The 13th Confession is one of the true masterworks of the sixities. Proof enough is the fact that three of the songs became huge hits for other artists; Three Dog Night (Eli's Comming), Fifth Diminsion (Sweet Blindness) and Stoney End (Barbara Strisand). She certainly caught lightening in a jar, seamlessly blending folk, gospel, blues and jazz. At the tender age of twenty Nyro established herself as one of the sixties premiere singer-songwriters.
So why do I expect to catch flack amongst the Nyro faithful? Well despite all the superlatives heaped upon Eli, I find little else in her subsequent works to get very excited about. New York Tenderberry wich followed Eli some ten months later was dark and brooding by comparison. With the exception of Time And Love, most of the melodies seemed ackward and plodding. Some I find downright depressing. Christmas & Beads of Sweat followed the same pattern. In fact it wasn't until "Gonna Take A Miracle", a collection of sixties soul staples, that I found myself once again enjoying her music. Collaborating with Labelle, aka Pattie Labelle & The Blue Bells on classic material like Jimmy Mack, Spanish Harlem, Nowhere To Run and You Really Got A Hold On Me truly was a miracle.
Again, I know most will disagree with me, but I never felt that any of her other albums ever quite achieved the heights of Eli. I've played it to death and it never comes up short for me. True it's just one album, but I'll take it to my desert island any day.
The Ambiguity of Genius.......2007-02-28
Laura Nyro was a gifted song writer and I loved the sound of her voice. If she was guilty of suicidal screeching, as has been suggested by some, what does that say about every other over paid rock diva? But honestly, this album has always left me a bit chilled. The landscape is bleak. There is a good groove going on Lucky, I never understood 'Dig those potatoes.' I wish I could have been there to talk her out of that line. Timer has wonderful potential, but oh that introduction. The recording of Sweet Blindness, endearing song, is a mess. There are under-appreciated gems here, December's Boudoir and The Confession. Don't dismiss this album out of hand, no artist could make a more penetrating statement about urban life. Some say it took them years to "Get" Laura Nyro. She grabbed me on my first hearing as a young teen-ager and never let go. If there is a more gifted singer-song writer out there, I don't know who it is.

Too busy.......2006-07-14
I was hoping for more music - there's just too much storytelling for my and my kids' taste. We love the Beethoven's Wig series and were hoping this would be similar.
good product and fast service.......2005-09-11
Product arrived in ample time overseas and was pleased with quality of product!
what a road trip.......2005-02-21
i bought this item after reading some of the reviews on amazon for my nephews who are 2 and 4 years of age. two months after christmas their mom was explaining how they request the cd everytime they are in the car. she groaned when i was in the car and they boys wanted to show me how much they liked the cd. during the trip i witnessed a mother humming along to the music with her children, the boys singing to excerpts, and an overall execptional learning experience about music, culture, and history. if you are looking for something that all children will like, passes the time on a road trip, and teaches important lessons about life without being pretentious then get this cd, it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
Mesmerized and moved mom to tears.......2005-01-26
This CD is awesome, the music great, the story captivating. But it's Mozart, you already know about the music. Other reviewers have already discussed the story and I agree with their assessments that it's very good. The reason for this review is to say that my very active, never stopping, constantly in motion 5 year old SAT DOWN AND LISTENED without fidgeting or fiddling for a full 20 minutes and then sat but fiddled for the remainder of the CD. Maybe this is not a big deal to moms of "normal" energy level children -- but this simple act of being still for 20 minutes moved me to tears. I said nothing before putting the CD in, I just put it in while he was doing his running around. Within seconds of hearing the story start he sat down on the floor, crossed his legs, and listened while looking at the speakers. I have never seen this behavior from my child before, ever. Please note that this is a child who is not ADD, he just cannot be still. He listens to hundreds of hours of stories we read to him -- while he's doing something else. He "watches" videos -- while he's doing something else. He reads, while clapping or tapping out the beat of the syllables. I cannot remember my child ever stopping what he was doing to JUST LISTEN. When it was over he said, "That was a cool story," and got up to run around. That was it, but that's high praise from this child. To see my child sitting still for a full 20 minutes, you cannot begin to imagine my awe. I am running right out to get the rest of the series! Bravo to the producers!
Daughter loves it.......2003-03-27
My daughter is 5 and loves to hear this CD over and over in the car.

Best Branigan compilation from the Northern Hemisphere!!.......2007-03-28
The late Laura Branigan had a remarkably worldwide fan base, with several greatest hits albums in countries ranging from South Korea, Brazil, Japan, Germany, and 2 in South Africa (and that was before the U.S. even had one!).
This PLATINUM COLLECTION is the best new compilation of her work since her death in 2004. While there are a few tracks that are glaringly absent (e.g., "Cry Wolf", "Hold Me", "Forever Young", singles from 1993's OVER MY HEART album, etc.), it is a good selection of her work. Better yet, these tracks are remastered!
Again, this is not a perfect selection (the ones from South Africa had the best selections), this album is the best one in years, certainly better than the BEST OF BRANIGAN that was released in the U.S. in 1995.
If you must limit yourself to one Branigan album and you do not want shell out the money for the ones from South Africa, the PLATINUM COLLECTION from the U.K. is your best choice!
Tell Laura I Love Her.......2007-02-14
To me, no collection could ever be complete without including every track Laura ever recorded. Hit or not, that is only spectulation by our obsession with the cencors of what is hot or not. Radio does not play the whole impact of what the public really enjoys listening to. Key words, "enjoys listening to, not what we are forced to hear on radio. Laura shall live on in the musical soundtrack of our lives.
Great Album!.......2007-01-11
Great compliment of songs and definitely a collector's dream. Can't recommend it any higher!!!
Good collection of a great singer's hits and album tracks........2006-12-19
Laura Branigan, a New York singer with a big, beautiful voice and dark sultry looks, tore up the charts in the early to mid 80s with a mix of europop style dance hits and soft rock ballads. Hindered by bad management, a label that though supportive, didn't know exactly what niche to market her to, and personal drama (divorce, drugs, lawsuits), her platinum status days didn't last, and she was all too soon forgotten. A pity, because Branigan was a top notch vocalist, with emotional range, phrasing and delivery that blow away all the screaming "divas" of today.
This Rhino produced compilation of hits and stand-out album tracks is perhaps the best selection of her work to date: it sounds great and offers some interesting song choices besides the chart hits (all here, for the most part). Wisely, the focus seems to be on the earlier years, when the lovely Branigan was at her peak. The inclusion of Satisfaction (a single in Germany) is a nice touch, although I'm puzzled by the omission of Maybe Tonight (a UK and Germany single which even has a video). A fine collection at any rate, and perhaps we'll even see the complete Self Control album remastered by Rhino with bonus tracks!
THE Laura Branigan hits collection! .......2006-09-25
Few people remember Laura Branigan's first hit single, "All Night With Me." It reached #60 a few months before the career-establishing megasmash "Gloria" hit the airwaves and shot to #2. That first hit has been so forgotten, in fact, that both Branigan's U.S. hits collections ("The Best of Branigan" and "Essentials") completely ignore the tune. Happily, this UK compilation presents the song, along with most of Branigan's other Hot 100 entries. "All Night With Me" is a great record, and it's a real treat that it has finally been remastered and presented on a hits CD.
With that said, this is THE Laura Branigan collection to own. The hits everyone knows are here ("Gloria," "Solitaire" and "Self Control"), along with smaller but solid hits like "The Lucky One," "Power of Love" and "Spanish Eddie." And of course, Branigan's #1 smash "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" from 1983 is here. And all these hits sound crisp and layered with the superb mastering job provided by Heathmans Studios.
There are a few head-scratchers, of course. Where is the hit "Hold Me"? Granted, it hit low in the Hot 100, but it was a hit and is a sexy, vibrant record. Instead of this song, or the single "Cry Wolf," listeners get two rather negligible ballads ("If You Loved Me" and "Lovin' You Baby") from Branigan's 1982 debut album and "Silent Partners," an okay song from Branigan's 1984 album. These tracks' inclusion is extra annoying, because all the material from Branigan's splendid and thoughtful 1993 "Over My Head" album is ignored.
Still, this is the very best Laura Branigan hits collection that has ever been available. The lovely, late vocalist sounds astonishing on every song, especially "Solitaire" (what a range!!!). Let's hope that someday a record label (read: Rhino) will make a two-CD collection of her work that includes all the hits, rare tracks and choice album tracks, like "Shadow of Love," one of Branigan's best recorded performaces.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Resource - We LOVE This CD!.......2007-07-16
This is a GREAT CD! Both the children and my husband and I love it. We bought it as an introduction to opera for our homeschooled children, and never guessed we'd all enjoy it so much.
All the tunes are ones you will probably recognize - but hearing the words that go with the music and hearing them in *English* is so helpful! It has been really fun to find out what these songs are really about.
My kids and I often catch ourselves singing opera through the day now, which is really neat. It has helped build their understanding of music in many different ways, and has improved my oldest daughter's voice ability as she strives to keep up with the professional singers on the CD.
The music is beautiful, the words are lovely and give meaning, and this whole CD is just exceptionally good entertainment!
Great Intro to Operas.......2006-10-16
THE WORLD"S VERY BEST OPERA FOR KIDS is a collection of fourteen of the best loved arias in the world. The whole family will enjoy this CD, which is a unique version of these famous arias in that these are all sung in English so your child (and you) can appreciate and imagine the story that it illustrates. It is a wonderful introduction to opera and will have the whole family humming the memorable melodies, which are sung by some of the best of famous voices. You will be inspired to read the storylines of the operas to your children for a wonderful educational and delightful family hour. The CD includes an insert with the words so you can sing along
A Sampler of Greatest Hits and Karaoke, Too.......2006-04-05
It really doesn't get much better than this CD. The primary benefit of the music is that it is a terrific selection of funny and touching arias from the classical genre. I am an opera lover and bought this for myself to memorize the words in English, as prompts when I listen to the pieces untranslated. I started listening to the CD while I was driving, and within a week had bought about a dozen CDs to distribute to family members and friends, with kids (and without). Everyone loves it. And at the end of the CD are several tracks of just the music, so you can sing along, which is a hoot. Your friends and colleagues, who hear you barking along to beats, will think you have taken leave of your senses. The lyrics (in English) are in the liner notes. I would suggest not reading the liner notes while driving.
Second CD benefit. The time you spend listening to this will be the equivalent of an afternoon at the beach or a walk in the mountains. The calming factor is amazing.
World's Very Best Opera for Kids... in English.......2006-01-30
I listen to this with my 3 year old and we both enjoy it. I am not an operatic expert and to my lay ears the performances here sound great, and my daughter likes hearing the words to some of her favorite music ("Play the Torreadores again Mommy!") Its a nice break from some more traditional kids songs that we listen to.
Great for adults too!.......2005-08-15
I never had an interest in opera until I made a trip to Italy and dined in an opera cafe. I appreciate it even more thanks to this CD. Now that I can hear the lyrics in english and read a synopsis of the story, I appreciate and enjoy opera even more.

More Than a New Discovery, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, and New York Tendaberry established Laura Nyro as one of the early 1970s' brightest and most uncompromising singer-songwriters. But just as the budding success of 1969's Tendaberry seemed to establish her persona in the public's mind, Nyro reached back to the beloved Brill Building pop, doo-wop, and '50s R&B for inspiration, extended a hand in partnership to then-down-on-their-luck soul vets LaBelle, and tossed off this loving blast from the past. Producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff (who would later formulate the vaunted Philly soul sound) were ostensibly in charge, though the voices of Nyro and LaBelle carry the day. Whether the bare-bones production harked back to the mindset of Nyro's moody Tendaberry or (as Amy Linden's new liner notes suggest) they simply ran out of time and had to finish the project, there's a sense of immediacy to the recordings that outstrips even some of the originals. Tracks like "Jimmy Mack" and "I Met Him on a Sunday" feel like they spontaneously came together around an upright piano, their rhythm section a chorus of joyous hand claps. Others, like "Desiree" and "The Wind," have a haunting, ethereal sense that's pure Nyro. This is one of the oddest collections of Nyro's career, but also one of the most joyously heartfelt. This reissue features four live bonus tracks, soulful solo covers of "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "O-o-h Child," and "Up on the Roof," that fit the theme of the studio album to a T. --Jerry McCulley

Laura was a great artist.......2006-11-10
This CD captures the real Laura, soulful and able to deliver a tune like nobody before or since. Her song " It's gonna take a miracle" should resonate with anyone who has ever loved someone.
Don't Leave Before The Miracle Happens.......2005-12-30
Laura Nyro was stunning in every respect - singer, composer, performer. Nobody hung it all out to dry quite like Laura Nyro. Eli and the Thirteenth Confession is a landmark album, as is New York Tendaberry. This effort stands apart, a nostalgic tribute to the pop classics Nyro grew up loving.
The bare bones recording and choice of LaBelle for background vocals are both inspired decisions, making for an effect that is casual and authentic. Chilling a cappella renditions of Desiree and The Wind offer a spiritual beauty, while Monkey Time and Dancing In The Street deliver feel good funk. (Plenty of vocal gymnastics from Patti LaBelle on those two in particular.) The bonus tracks seem to be taken from a college concert and include interesting renditions of classics like Up On The Roof, Ain't Nothin' Like The Real Thing, and others.
If you are only going to own one Nyro CD, it should be Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. If you want a quirky minor masterpiece, this is for you.
Blast from the Past.......2005-12-15
If I hadn't watched 'A Home at the End of the World' I would have hardly remembered LaBelle or Nyo. As it happened, it brought back floods of memories fro mmy youth and out came also the old Carol King songs to be listened to again.
Good, that such quality cannot be beaten.
