Danny Tenaglia produces a surprisingly slow and sexy romp through deep and tribal house for Thrive's fourth release in the Global Underground series. Tenaglia, a resident DJ at the Tunnel and Vinyl clubs in New York City, is accustomed to playing long sets (eight hours or more in one night) and this CD admirably demonstrates that stamina. Mixes are extended, grooves are deepened for several tracks, and Tenaglia carefully chooses his peak records at key moments. The first CD is considerably darker, the pitch control rolled way down for tracks such as "System Error" and "The Real Jazz," before Tenaglia effortlessly glides the listener with electro(!) from Miss Kitten and Anthony Rother. The second disc is a more upbeat and dubby affair, with Tenaglia dropping techno in the mix (Cari Lekabusch) next to Saint Etienne, gradually progressing into epic trance (Return of the Native). In two discs, Tenaglia demonstrates more versatility and technical prowess than many DJs do in a lifetime. --Tricia Romano

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Purchase if Previously Missed.......2007-04-28

Danny Tenaglia steps up to the Global Underground city series stage for the first time to mark the 10th commerical release with Global Underground 010: Athens.

Tenagla is world-class DJ number six featured on the mighty label and adds a new feel to the series with his tribal and dark progressive house track selections.

For the most part this compilation has aged well. Both discs are not overly "old" sounding.

I have mixed feelings about disc 1. There are some great tracks, but Moody by BPT could have been passed over. It can be found on nearly every compilation released during the two years prior to this album. However, the groove killer on this disc has to be the last two tracks, "Frank Sinatra" and "Red Light District". Two narrative tracks that are pretty bad. Disc 1 stops for me at the beginning of "Frank Sinatra" without exception!

Disc 2 is much more fluid. There are no horrible tracks...just deep dark beats throughout. No reaching for the stop or skip button on this one.

Disc 1 gets 3.5/5 stars and Disc 2 gets 4.5/5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars well S%$T .......2007-01-20

Listened to every track.....two tracks I liked...the rest...well use it as ambient music to fall asleep to...that's a bad thing

3 out of 5 stars Global Underground London is better.......2006-02-19

I do like Tenaglia very much, and while I do enjoy listening to these discs on occassion, my mind wanders back to Global Underground London - which I think is by far his better collection. Besides, I am a Red Sox fan and it bothers me a little he has a Yankee hat on the cover (totally kidding)! :-)

5 out of 5 stars HOLY WACAMOLE !!.......2005-01-03

how do you know when a production in the music business is awsome?
because more than 2 years from its release, people still write and talk about it.
Progressive House, House, Deep House. This CD is a MUST HAVE for every person who likes music regardless the type of music.

Global Underground 010 - Danny Tenaglia - Athens does represent what electronic music is all about. If i were to pick up a few CDs for another culture (martians) and let them know what ours is about, this would be one of the ones i would pick.

4 out of 5 stars A bit more than four stars..........2004-09-16

I started with Danny's GU London set. Had Disc 2 bootlegged (sorry Danny) long before I actually purchased it at an auction site (sorry again, Danny, as you don't see a penny either way). That is perhaps the greatest GU disc out there.

It was inevitable that I'd find his Athens set. Got this one at a used CD shop (and, once again, Danny doesn't see a penny out of this...why all the fuss over Morpheus and Kazaa when the artist doesn't see a penny of it after the intial sale?). Ok, tirade aside, this is a phenomenal set. I would imagine it was even more phenomenal when it first landed.

Both discs are fantastic but Disc 2 is the more consistent. Disc 1 has some great moments (Moody is a prime example) and is a great way to spend an hour or so. But Disc 2 can't help but be great with it's opening with Seduction to rope you in. By the time it lands on Feel Free (perhaps THE definition of anthem) you're about ready to jump out of your skin. It's a tremendous effort.

I don't quite go for the five stars having been spoiled by his London set. There are traces of what would be on the London set - the experimentation with percussion, for example - but there are some moments here that just drag. Not many, but just enough that it's noticeable. Trivial, either way.

Start with either set and you'll hear why Danny is one of the most talented and innovative DJs to have ever hit the scene. Seems to me that many a DJ thanks him in their liner notes for his inspiration. That's about as high a compliment as you can get.

5 out of 5 stars The Right House Music.......1999-12-11

Danny's version of house is anatomically correct. House should be a deep, dark soundscape, and that's what you hear when you listen to Danny Tenaglia.

One word for this recording: "Smooth"... The deep, rhythmic bass and cheeky high ends of Danny Tenaglia's flawless programming are at their finest in these two CDs. If you like sleek, potent house, then look no further than Tenaglia. He weaves a web of hypnotizing grooves that seems to be beatmatched to your own brainwaves. Be sure to play it at volume and if you like this, try the London Selection by the same artist under the same series; the masterful Global Underground collection.
