Please note if you are considering buying that these are not the original movie soundtracks, these are an orchestra re-recording the music. If, like me, you like the original thing, then this is not for you.

Silva Screen Records has brought film music to another level in soundtracks, flawless from the very first note to the last, pure perfection---there is no other label I know of today that could come close to what they have done in film score/soundtrack albums---All in all, this outstanding and moving box set with awesome material will have film music collectors crying for more--- This has to be the essential and definitive in Western-Folk-Lore score compilations, and I should know, this has been my thing as long as I can remember---Who can forget our western heroes - John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, Clint Eastwood, Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck and Gregory Peck. The City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine and Derek Wadsworth have done an outstanding job re-creating the old west with prairies and openess you feel when watching your favorite western film.

There you have it Buckaroo's---as we drive our herd to Abilene with Nic Raine(conductor) and The City Of Prague Philharmonic riding point, making sure no stragglers are left behind, we must meet our deadline at the rail head---James Fitzpatrick (producer) and Reynold da Silva (executive producer), David Stoner & Peter Compton (release co-ordinators), Rick Clark (mastering) and Damien Doherty (artwork)---giving us a fair price for our beef, this is how the West was, and through the recordings of Silva Screen Records it rides again---so "film-score-buffs", lean back in the saddle and watch the sun come up over the prairie skies---we're back when our country was just coming of age---Wagons Ho!

5 out of 5 stars One of the All time BEST.......2007-01-04

I got this recording when it was first came out in vinyl record form. I absolutely love it! When I ran across a tape I had made from the record I popped it in the tape player and revisited the pleasure this recording originally gave me. I immediately wondered if it was on CD. I searched for it and was estatic that it was available! I am so happy to have a copy on CD. I would recommend it to anyone who prefers a melody and meaningful lyrics. There is no other like Carole Bayer Sager. She is unique as a person and hands down uniques as a singer/songwriter. The only problem is that she did not continue in music. This is music that makes you feel what she is singing. A++++++++++++++++++++

5 out of 5 stars Carole's Uncanny Ability to Speak to the Heart..........2005-03-20

I stumbled across this LP in a used bookstore in Texas several years ago. Recognizing Carole's name crediting many, many songs that I have enjoyed listening to by other artists, I thought I would give it a listen to get a better sense of her own interpretation of her music.

Boy, I'm glad I did! What I found was music that speaks to the heart. Some of it, I found very difficult to listen to because it evokes such strong feelings. Profound ones at that, from the cautiously heartbreaking lyrics and music of "Aces" to the zaniness of "You're Moving Out Today", to the uncertainty and timid sound of "Shy as a Violet", there is something for everyone who holds the magic of Carole's prolific music career close to them.

Suprisingly, I have found it available on CD...and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who respects the power of great, emotive music with heart.

5 out of 5 stars A must have album........2004-12-13

I bought this recently. Having had it on LP I had wondered if I would ever hear to this album again.
The availability and price held me back from buying it but it was well worth the wait.
Yes, her voice is not that great but it does not matter when you have beautiful words and melodies.
Consider the contributors to this album such as Peter Allen, Bette Midler, Madeline Khan, Paul Buckmaster, Marvin Hamlesh & many others. This is a must have album full of beautiful & entertaining songs.

Buy it now, you want be sorry.

Drew

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get Any Better.......2003-09-25

This album is the best. Please buy it so Carole can get more royalties and maintain her lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars You've Gotta Put Yourself Back In That Spot.......2003-05-29

If you are familiar with this album, then you know it will carry you back to an uncomfortable young stage of your life where you thought you knew a lot, but you actually did not. There was someone you wanted to meet, but you were as shy as a violet. Later, after you managed to forge a relationship with that person, something (developing wisdom?) told you it really might be best to leave while you're in love, before you forget the meaning of the word -- and after things cratered, you seriously entertained thoughts of being dumb enough to steal away again.

If you were that age when you first heard it, you know it's a tear-jerker left over from those times that were so tender and meaningless, though heavy with the potential for romantic errors and worse. Save up the [$$$]and buy it, as an anthem to the relief of having all that inexperience behind you. Lessons learned.

In a 1996 review of the indie film Caught, movie critic Rex Reed paid the ultimate compliment to trumpeter Chris Botti, (who wrote the score and whose horn graced the soundtrack), comparing the young upstart's smoky style to that of a young Chet Baker. Botti has since gone on to great success in smooth jazz by combining a laid-back demeanor with attitude-filled grooves and picture-perfect melodies. Enter legendary composer John Barry--whose resume runs from Born Free to Dances with Wolves and, more jazzily, Body Heat. He loved director Willard Carroll's idea of lacing the soundtrack to Playing by Heart with a handful of 1956 Baker-quartet originals. Botti was an obvious choice when Barry chose to extend that vibe into the orchestral score, and the haunting album cover--featuring a pensive Barry between Botti and a young Baker, both holding their horns, over a black background--perfectly epitomizes the passing of the generational torch. The opening tune, "Remembering Chet," captures the essence of the whole album; Botti's balmy trumpet wafts over Lee Musiker's elegant piano meditation as the orchestra breezes in and out of the background. There's not a whole lot of rhythmic variation as the tracks progress, but Barry wisely mixes in a few other colorful elements throughout, most notably Daniel Higgins' romantic alto (trading riffs with Botti on the title theme) and Tommy Morgan's lonesome harmonica on "A Place Inside Alive and Well." The classic smooth, delicately bittersweet tones of Baker (on "Tenderly," "You Go to My Head" and "These Foolish Things" are interspersed between the Botti tunes, creating a contrast between the two horns. Arranged this way, it's almost like listening to a one-of-a-kind lesson between a legendary mentor and a student primed to carry on his legacy. -- Jonathan Widran

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Playing by Heart.......2006-03-25

This is a great soundtrack. Typical John Barry sweet melancholy melodic work. Marries well with many other Chris Botti CDs. Paralleling Chet Baker's work alongside Chris Botti's is an interesting approach. Barry, of course, is perfection itself.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few recent scores from the master.......2005-05-24

Sadly, John Barry seems to be basically retired now. He hasn't scored a film since "Enigma" back in 2000. This was the film he did immediately before that, and while most of his score was dumped from the final theatrical version of "Playing By Heart," this album presents the score as he intended it, along with a few key pieces by Chet Baker that inspired the filmmakers and Barry.

This is not the Barry of the James Bond films, doing big, brassy orchestral sounds. Instead, we get a thoughtful, moody, jazzy Barry, closer to his roots in 50's clubs.

Reading the liner notes, with the director gushing about how perfect Barry was for the film, is a bit odd, since he proceeded to replace almost all of Barry's music with another composer. Still, this doesn't diminish the power of Barry's compositions.

I'm just glad we get to hear them, since rejected scores are almost always locked away in a vault somewhere. This music is too good for that, and somebody was thinking straight and knew this. Thank you to whoever approved the release of this album, it's unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Meanwhile---back at the molasses factory.......2004-11-29

I've got nothing against Barry's addiction to his own slow hypno mode of music. I just wish he'd speed things up every once in a while. My favorite track is SCENE UNSEEN.

I'm not a fan of Chet Baker's slow tracks. As a matter of fact, I resent the fact that Chet is best known for those slow tracks. (David Thomson referred to them as "torch songs on dead batteries".) I vastly prefer Chet's collaborations with Gerry Mulligan.

5 out of 5 stars No Words To Discribe.......2004-04-13

This CD is one of the best I've ever bought.
An essential for solitary and still nights.
The three performers are great.

5 out of 5 stars Turn down the lights.............2003-10-10

The album that introduced me to Chris Botti. Bought it for the Chet Baker cuts, which are fine, but was blown away by Botti's work. This is a great bedroom jazz album. Sooooo mellow. Strong Barry influence on the intervening cuts which also goes to set the mood. Album hangs together very well as a single concept despite influences of three great artists.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Music.......2007-06-03

I love the music to this movie and hollywood director's do too. Why else would they use this music to promote their movies in the trailer especially if it is a heartwarming story. Too bad it's out of print because I would love to own it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, Influential Soundtrack.......2007-03-21

In Randy Edelman's soundtrack for Dragon - The Bruce Lee Story, a score has been created that captures the excitement, energy, and drama that made up of the tragic star's all-too brief life.

This soundtrack has been so influential that its main theme, "Bruce and Linda" has been used for many theatrical trailers and television commercials. It has grace, beauty, strength, and majesty, and is woven throughtout some of the other selections.

Lively, haunting, and ultimately captivating, this soundtrack is one of the alltime best.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Scores Ever Written.......2006-10-19

Whether you are a fan of the movie 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' or not, you owe it to yourself to listen to this amazing score by Randy Edelman. The one word that comes to mind while listening to this is INSPIRATIONAL. For the past decade+ I have rarely heard a score that made me just feel like I could conquer the world. Edelman accomplishes the rare feat of taking a scene from the film, knowing what the director was looking to accomplish, and coming through in the clutch without no equal.

You know a score is an instant classic when the source material is used for other films' trailers, tv promos, etc, and I have heard the music from this movie time and again ever since listening to this album for the first time back in the early 90s.

If you love musical scores and/or Randy Edelman's work, you owe it to yourself to pick up this soundtrack whether you have any interest in Bruce Lee, martial arts, etc. This is one of those rare albums where most likely 99% of the audience is going to enjoy the final product, and it's one of the rare items that gets a HPR from me.

***** HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

4 out of 5 stars One of the most inspirational scores I've ever heard.......2006-07-01

Ever since I saw a young Canadian man skate to this music during a Winter Olympics, I have not been able to get it out of my mind, and I hear it now and then as a theme behind various trailers for films still. Together with the score from "Rudy", "Dragon" is one of the most beautiful movie scores to come alone in a long while.
I listen to this CD nearly every morning while taking my daily walks, and I have performed Tai Chi routines to it for 500 people or more and have had overwhelmingly positive feedback which I feel is due to the beauty of this music.
If you're looking for an inspirational, upbeat, 'feel good' CD, I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time fav's.......2006-03-08

I was first introduced to this during the Winter Olympics when Elvis Stojko of Canada used it in his program. It soars and energizes me when I hear it. I never tire of listening to it. This and Kindergarden Cop and Last of the Mohicans are my choices for Randy Edelman. My favorite tracks are 1,4,8,9,11. I would recommend this to any soundtrack collector while it is still available and reasonably priced. In my top 10.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Sounding Recordings.......2001-10-16

This CD has been around for a while now but it is still truly a good compilation of Science Fiction film music given a new dimension by being recorded digitally. The BATMAN selections composed by Danny Elfman are very powerful combing rousing elements with moody enigmatic passages. Most of the other selections are short or confined to one piece. The selections from TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER and POLTERGEIST all composed by Jerry Goldsmith are all performed with passion and demonstrate Goldsmith's great versatility. Bernard Herrmann's "Outer Space" from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is brief but in effect makes it all the more powerful by its great innovation and lasting impact. The WAR OF THE WORLDS "Prelude" by Leith Stevens was a great surprise.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting collection of obscure s/f-fantasy themes.......2000-10-26

Maestro Kunzel has gathered together a mostly-entertaining mix of music from various s/f movies. As usual with these collections, the CD contains selections that are hard to come by (if not impossible) on a soundtrack or any other recorded source. Not all of the tracks work, however. Music from "Moonwalker" is annoying, and the theme from "War of the Worlds" is just plain weird. Not Kunzel's fault, I know, but those pieces tend to (for me) mar the overall likeability of the album. That said, there are definitely keepers: The theme from "The Black Hole," the soundtrack to which was unavailable on CD anywhere until just recently and which by itself is worth the cost; the sweet chorus of Carol Ann's Theme from "Poltergeist"; the themes from "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "The Beast Master" (I am Dar!) and "The Last Starfighter."

Unfortunately, these movie collections tend to waste too much disk space on sound effects. Often inserted as short introductions to a piece of music, most can be endured quickly and forgotten. But on this CD, a whole track's worth following "The Black Hole" is devoted to the inane cacophony of electronic gibberish, space that would have been much better served by playing, say, the Love Theme from "Superman."

Still, there are more things to like on this album than there are to dislike.

      3 out of 5 stars Digital Sound with a so-so collection.......2000-06-25

This is another of the Telarc label's collections put together under the conductor Erich Kunzel and performed by the Cincinnati pops orchestra. Like all Telarc discs, the sound is pure digital and hence can really pack a punch. Moreover, Kunzel often chooses some vey nice gems in his collections -- e.g. the neglected Last Starfighter piece here. However, the problem arises in the fact that many pieces of film score don't play well with a large orchestra -- they loose their focused intensity. The Batman here suffers from such a flaw and is weaker than the original score. The Pops orchestra is best with march-type themes, of which there are not enough on this album to make it outshine the original soundtracks from which it draws.

        2 out of 5 stars Goidbye, album.......2006-03-31

I'm listening to this album right now. It's alright. Very
noisy, trippy, indie..... This reminds me of a more industrial
experimental psychedelic ween. You be the judge on that. I
only thought,"[Square] bubbles," was really good. Plus track 9 is O.K. Songs range 5-6 minutes. Instrumental opening. Spacey
synth. Dreamy occasionaly, like track 1 and, " take take
        take."

        5 out of 5 stars underrated band.......2005-09-16

A friend of mine played The Helio Sequence for me and since then I haven't been able to get over them. This band is simply amazing, and they get better with every listen. These guys are musical mad scientists. The music is complex and demands you attention. And every time you listen you learn something new from it. This album is light years better than anything I've heard from indie-sensations Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, The Shins...

This band deserves attention, they're awesome.

        4 out of 5 stars An improvement.......2003-12-27

I've had these two young men's first disk since around when it came out and have waited for a new disk in the hopes that they would add more vocals and cut back on the lengthly 7 minute songs. My wish came true. The men are studio genius, they make some of the most wonderful loops in recent memory. I would suggest this disk to anyone who likes involving, spirling songs.

        2 out of 5 stars 16-layer dip too filling.......2003-04-29

I saw these guys at SxSW and was amazed at the amount of sound and energy they were able to generate for just two guys. I was impressed enough to pick up a copy of the CD at the show based largely on the song 'Cut the Camera' which is also the best song on the CD. Unfortunately, many of the songs get lost in a wash of synth-loops and other effects in a man v. machine struggle for control. The potential is certainly there once they gain enough confidence in their vocals and songwriting to let the songs and melodies breath a little more. Will they be given a chance?

        5 out of 5 stars 2 guys, 10 songs, one great album.......2003-03-04

Whatever happened to cause the Helio Sequence to spawn this album must have been some ordeal. Every song deals with corporate masquerading, the drudgery of the daily grind and 70-hour work weeks with potently venomous lyrics. The fact that the social criticism is coupled with some of the most beautiful and densely layered pop music is the real accomplishment.

All of the songs float above your head with multiple melodies from bouncing bass, wailing guitars and synth squiggles, all of which combine to comprise a lush tapestry of sound.

"Echo Blomp" sounds like it is being rained down from Heaven's P.A. system while "Kablerium vs. Obliviousity" is a racing six minutes that could energize a corpse. My personal favorite is "Take Take Take," which is nearly two songs. The first 4 minutes is a cheary dirge that sounds like a spring meadow looks and the final 3:30 or so is a heartbreaking symphony done on synthesizer.

One magazine successfully described this album as a cross between the Beach Boys and British shoegazers like Spacemen 3, early Lush and My Bloody Valentine. If that sounds good to you, then there is no way you'll be disappointed by this album. Unconditionally recommended.
