5 out of 5 stars buy this album!!!.......2006-05-27

It is the sound of humpback whales amongst a sea of turmoil.

truly organized chaos

first heard it on WSOU when it tugged on my big artery, have been a junkie ever since.

4 out of 5 stars take a chance on the Paper Chase.......2005-11-05

Incendiary guitar, truly malicious piano-beating, and some twisting insights on the old canards (life and death, love and fear). Not a cliche to be found though, musical or otherwise. This is intriguing, powerful music.

5 out of 5 stars amazingly amazing-tastic.......2005-05-08

this CD is absolutely amazing. this is beautifully written noise that's just so compelling and poignant and all those wonderful 10 dollar words. This is just WONDERFUL.. even coming from a person like me who enjoys eclectic pop electronic music in words that i don't understand... pizzicato 5, cibo matto, stereo total.. PLEASE own this album and be enlightened. All i can do is pray that this music never hits the radio and is tainted by the media. (which so many people think of Modest Mouse these days)

5 out of 5 stars complete.......2005-01-20

i just recently became a fan, and i sure am glad i did. this is an amazing cd. the only other cd i think that feels as utterly complete as GBYBH is Tool's Lateralus. every song runs together, even the first and last...so just put it on repeat and let it go. it feels good to finally hear a fresh sound come from a band. in the "punk/pop/emo" crap thats out now this cd is a breath of freash air. i always say that only a few are smart enough to understand this music....so check out some of the samples and judge for yourself. totally amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible........2004-08-20

I got this CD from a kid i met on my school bus, and I was expecting some mediocre art rock. But this is one of the best CDs of the last few years. I was amazed the second I put the disc in. Can't realy describe how good it is. If the person who gave this to me is reading this... thank you!!!

5 out of 5 stars Some people just don't get it.......2006-10-06

Paperchase is a great band, as long as you can multi-task between everything they do. But thats not really why I wrote this. To anyone who said "If you want real sad music, go check out Bright Eyes"

Yeah... you should be punched in the throat for saying that. Paperchase and Bright Eyes are nowhere near each other musically. This is avant garde/noise, Bright Eyes is folk music. So quit comparing the two.

And if you actually LISTENED to the lyrics, they aren't really "Oh Im a sad tragic soul in an unforgiving world" type lyrics.

Now if you don't like it, that's fine, not everyone will. But please, quit it with the Bright Eyes. Conor will not have sex with you for mentioning his band in every review.

5 out of 5 stars the pAper chAse is Rock and Roll.......2005-09-14

Bright Eyes freakin blows you bonehead. the pAper chAse is everythign u ever need in music. They will kick your balls. This album is awesome, buy it.

2 out of 5 stars I'm trying to give it a chance, but............2005-06-12

First, trust me when I say that I listen to music that is comparable in genre and feel to this album. I bought it a couple of weeks ago, and I've been listening to it off and on, trying to like it. However, the parts of this album that should feel like you're experiencing a burst of raw emotion just feel entirely too contrived. It's as though Congleton tried to make his music as repulsively dissident as Chris Carrabba makes his pretty. The desired effect? To epitomize his music within the genre. Every musician does it, but if you want something that can AT LEAST trick you into believing the singer is as big an emotional and social wreck as he pretends to be, I suggest you surf on over to Bright Eyes.

5 out of 5 stars AmAzing..the pAper chAse hAve done it AgAin.......2004-04-23

First, off pAper chAse is amazing...I'm way late for writing a review on this album, considering their next amazing album is going to be released a month after I write this. Anyways...this cd is has every element you need. Scary, weird, fun...laced with brilliant tallent. GO see their show. I've seen in 7 times. It's seriously an addiction for myself, A pAper chAse cult member.

5 out of 5 stars when it all goes bad.......2003-09-05

Post love-affair hatred burnt onto a plastic disc. When a serious relationship turns sour, the resulting anger, desperation, blame and self loathing can easily turn into a veritable tsunami of ugly, dangerous situations. The Paper Chase singer John Congleton knows how this feels and he put it all on display for us to hear. This is an album of pure emotion, although it is far, far darker and more frightening than anything falling under the emo banner. Rampant, almost Jesus Lizard-esque, filthy post-hardcore squalls back up Congleton confessions like the soundtrack to an evil psychological thriller. And with song titles like I Did A Terrible Thing and A Little Place Called Trust and indeed the album title itself, you can feel the pain in the man's heart running through every contorted note. Uneasy listening in every sense, but quite, quite brilliant nevertheless.

Album Description

The Paper Chase's signature sounds - strangled guitars, bombastic percussion, terror-stricken strings, bizarre samples, and crashing pianos - are firmly in place on this new record. Here, the Dallas quartet creates the sonic equivalent to George A. Romero's classic zombie films, in which one and all inevitably become "one of them". Layers of trepidation are aurally peeled away and scrutinized while a looming unknown lies below the surface. The sound of ghostly forces opening and closing squeaky doors becomes eerily significant, and songwriter/singer/producer John Congleton's trademark desperation is at its most crucial.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Abnormal Obtuse Dissonance!.......2007-06-11

The one band that really comes to mind when thinking of this band is Cursive, especially Ugly Organ. Think of all the dissonant moments of that album (ugly moments), and put them on one album, and extend it 10 minutes or so for an album of pure insanity! The lyrics and vocals work around this emotion as well, very violent... Some of the most interesting music I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Congleton Does It Again!.......2006-06-16

If you've heard one Paper Chase recording, you've heard 'em all. Most of the time, this approach gets very old, very quick. The Paper Chase are the exception. While every album has the same type of sound, the same creepy lyrics and the same "creepy crazy serial killer type interludes," it works everytime and they never fail to disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars MAN OH MAN!.......2006-06-08

I waited two years for this album and i was not disappointed! Viva la paper chase!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece of akward, energetic dissonance.......2006-06-08

Imagine if a band took the artsyness and emotional energy of indie rock, then mixed it with the irregular sonic methods of post rock. Now take that and add in the classical/orchestral influences and conceptual flair of prog rock. Top this off with a bit of avant-garde style dissonance and John Congleton's endearingly terrible vocals and you have something that sort of resembles The Paper Chase. Squealing, ear-aggravating guitar, thumping 5-string bass, a string section that plays anything from the most beautiful of melodies to tense sections that couldn't end fast enough for your ears' liking, a piano that does likewise, extensive sampling, a huge variety of sounds, and catchy choruses - all tied together by recurring musical and lyrical themes that create some sort of a concept for the album.

As for how Now You Are One of Us compares to their previous albums, it doesn't truly contain anything new, although The Paper Chase are definitely leading into a more musical direction. Their songs are less abstract, their melodies more apparent, and their sound is just overall tighter. The density of ideas and delivery have both gone up quite a bit here. Whether this is because the band is becoming less experimental or simply better at arranging the elements of their sound is something I'm not sure of, although I lean towards the latter.

Overall, Now You Are One of Us is slightly less esoteric than their previous efforts (although maybe not God Bless Your Black Heart as that was fairly accessible too), but still one of the albums I love that I'm least surprised to find others dislike. If their dissonance doesn't scare a first time a listener off, John Congleton's awkward (or "bad" if you will)-yet-confident vocal delivery probably will.

    Album Description

Back in the 90s the Sunset Lounge was an up-and-coming cool place for artists, bohemians, the nouveau riche and just friends in San Francisco. The four friends who founded this place came from different ethnic backgrounds (South-American, Asian, and European) and had decided to bring their differences together into one big multi-cultural melting pot. Directly located next to the ocean, the lounge combined club, bar, theatre, restaurant, and hang-out all in one place in perhaps the most tolerant, liberal, and stylish city in the US!

Various musicians from all over the world came here to perform on stage. Electric, acoustic, or instrumental, it was always about matching the atmosphere to easy listening soundtracks. After several years, the founders decided in the spring of 2006 to work on a compilation that included all the best tracks ever played at the lounge and the Chillout Ibiza series was born.

Chillout Ibiza - The Balearic Edition follows in this proud tradition and is sure to stir the senses.

Just across the river from the relatively wealthy and bustling City of Brothery Love lies one of the most poverty striken cities in North America- Camden, New Jersey. One of the only rap group that hails from the mean streets of East Philadelphia is the duo known as The Krown Rulers. Made up of MC Grand-Pubah (not Grand Puba from Brand Nubian) and DJ Royal Rocker, The Krown Rulers came up with Phillys legendary Tuff Crew and released the often talked about but rare as f Phanjam LP (Phanjam is not as rare anymore, as the official reissue is available from Traffic). In 1988, The Krown Rulers put out their own LP on Warlock Records called Paper Chase. This is without a doubt one of the best old school Hip Hop records ever. Its simply drenched in the heavy, heavy percussion-first ethos that characterized a lot of the great records from the late 80s. The shit just flat out bangs with hella loud drums, energetic sample stabs, and some pretty furious scratch hooks. There are many stand out joints on this classic album including the violent title track banger Paper Chase, 32nd St. Down (The Eastside Story), that rides the Stevie Wonders Superstitious guitar riff, and the Mos Def and High & Mighty covered B-Boy Document.

2 out of 5 stars 'Glad that I got mine before it became a rarity".......2007-01-22

Having been one of the much sought-after film composers of the last three decades, John Williams has built up a repertoire of scores that immensely added to the films that they accompanied. One cannot think of "Star Wars," "Jaws," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Superman-The Movie," or the Indiana Jones trilogy without hearing Williams' dynamic and timeless melodies. Unfortunately, the three films represented on this disc are not the composer at his best and didn't age well. They sound too much like the 70's, especially the score to "The Paper Chase," complete with period mid-tempo rock, blended on some cuts with classical compositions. The "Conrack" excerpt sounds like a holdover from "Room 222," a television series that had Jerry Goldsmith at the musical helm.

Even the best of the three, "The Poseidon Adventure," itself is rather mundane and, unlike a good score, can't stand on its own without the movie images.

Williams actually did better music for his television collaborations ("Lost in Space," "The Time Tunnel," "Land of the Giants") with Irwin Allen, the producer of "Poseidon."

The sound quality is poor, as if it were recorded "open air" with a home mike, from a turntable spinning.

This three-score set is solely for those collectors of John's work but cannot be recommended for those that want to hear the composer triumphantly.

1 out of 5 stars Appalling sound quality makes Poseidon excrutiating.......2007-01-10

While FSM must be complimented in making the only surviving mono tapes available on CD for the most devoted collectors of John Williams' music, the vast majority of potential listeners would find this release excrutiating to listen to. The sound could hardly be any worse. Let's hope a worthwhile re-recorded suite will be produced sometime soon, for the mono backup tapes that provide the source for this CD are in very poor shape and do not do the score any justice, with extreme distortion, noise and unsteady sound.
The other two scores featured on the CD fare slightly better sound-wise, but Poseidon is clearly the main feature of this release and if that is what you would be buying this CD for, I suggest you think carefully before paying too much for what is now an out-of-print CD.
