As the winner of the fifth season of Nashville Star, Angela Hacker brings more than a hint of the soul music of her native Muscle Shoals to contemporary country. With her breathy alto and trace of a rasp, Hacker proves equal to the task of handling R&B classics "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" (originally recorded by Aretha Franklin) and "Hard to Handle" (though the steamy album closer sounds a little incestuous as a duet with her brother Zac, who also competed that season). Her debut album mixes studio versions of other standards that Hacker performed during the competition--"Strawberry Wine," "I Can't Make You Love Me" (the Bonnie Raitt ballad), and "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool"--but the combination of Hacker's vocal grit and her songwriting strength suggests that she's an artist of considerable promise. Her songwriting collaborations on "You Got Me" and "Emotionless" fit just fine with the familiar fare. --Don McLeese

the winner is...........2007-07-06
wow two years in a row on Nashville Star that I picked the winner and purchased the cd. Both were well worth buying. Angela's voice is a mix between Tammy Wynette and Lorretta Lynn. She has a very raspy yet very country voice. When I first heard her sing on Nashville Star, I knew she was going to be the winner! This cd is very good and well worth it.
Angela Hacker - Something Special!.......2007-04-11
Following Angela's triumphant performances on the Opry, I looked forward to her new Cd with renewed and even rabid anticipation. At last I would have a complete set of performances to substitute for and augment the bit and pieces of her music that I had managed to acquire from Itunes and elsewhere, and, moreover, one that was to be consistently and professionally produced.
I love the artwork and the generally "look." Though relatively simple, its use of browns and various shades of amber and blonde fit the ambience of our girl perfectly as does the generally rustic theme. It reminds me a little of the plain brown packaging of George Jones' multi-Cd set of hits from the 1950s released ten or so years ago. Moreover her photos, without appearing "Hollywood" or overly processed, are just lovely. Though the track listing was available before, I must confess to being a little disappointed that there were only ten songs. Missing in action were You Don't Even Know My Name, and Satin Sheets, which I had convinced myself might be made available (otherwise why would Angela promote it on the Opry?). It turns out that You Don't Even Know My Name is available, but only as a special download from Itunes, and only then if you buy the entire album from that source (a typical nasty trick by the business types in Nashville, especially as this song has been one of the most requested!!) We can only hope that Satin Sheets (my favorite performance by Angela of all time so far) might be among those chosen for the upcoming Angela/Zac album.
As expected the vast majority of songs are familiar, and most are remixed and reproduced versions of those that have been on Itunes for a while. These are comprised of: Strawberry Wine, I Can't Make You Love Me, Total Loss, I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool, and When Will I Be Loved. With only one exception, the new productions are successful, and flesh out the originals quite well. On When Will I Be Loved, for instance, harmony guitars are added making it sound more like the Linda Ronstadt version. Similarly, all have been layered to sound larger, and Angela's vocals are EQed to be rounder and warmer. The one exception is Total Loss. John Bohlinger's slide work is superseded by those of Steve Fishell, who has an excellent tone, but takes a simpler approach that in my judgment is less effective than John's denser and dirtier interpretation. Still, it is a very good song, and the new production does work. I just wish Warner's would pick it up and promote it as a single; it is far better than most everything else out there right now.
Two of the other songs, Love Me Wild, and You Got Me, are Angela originals and were scheduled for her independent Cd that she was to release if she didn't win Star. Her first efforts at recording them were available for a while on her myspace site (and were downloaded by larcenous if clever fans). The new productions succeed in transforming songs that were good and had potential into something exceptional. Wild is classic radio fodder, a good opener with a great hook propelled by the fairly standard theme of love as sex; You Got Me, however, is much more profound and features Angela offering her love to a man as an antidote to the pain of a broken relationship. She sounds sincere and loving. Last among those tunes with which we have already become familiar is Hard to Handle, appearing first on the last episode of Star and featuring Zac and Angela in a greasy Southern rock duet - very Stax! If you saw it you know it was and is excellent; a good time for all! The two work very well together and those years of local gigs have paid off in their emotional and wild performance here.
This leaves the two "new songs," an original, Emotionless, and Do Right Woman, Do Right Man, recorded first by Aretha Franklin. The first is powerful and like so much of Angela's work expresses impatience at unnecessary (unnecessary that is to women :-)) barriers to love. How can it be, she complains, that intimacy has inspired no emotion at all on the part of her recent lover (is there a woman alive that has not asked that question?)? It is a question, however, that would not even occur to most men (because we are all pigs of course lol). This is another song that could sound well on GAC and CMT, listenable and commercial. The hidden gem on the Cd, however, is Do Right Woman, which is probably why she chose to give it a special mention during her Opry interview. A classic soul ballad, Angela sings it effortlessly, and it gives us some insight into one of the directions we can expect her career to take.
Regardless of the songs, whether fast, slow, superficial, or soulful, the common denominator is Angela Hacker and her immense talent at interpretation. She is such a skillful singer, gifted with such excellent tone, technique, and phasing that she is able to take any song and make it her own, including, we expect, even Mary had a Little Lamb. This is the Cd's strongest aspect; it has good songs, one or two that are great, to be sure, but it is Angela and her at once unique and familiar vocals that drive the performances. In each tune there is at least one moment of brilliance on her part, a turn of phrase, a note being held etc., that collectively transform what might have been a raggedy collection into a strong album, one that would be a source of pride for most country artists. We have known from the first performance of the first Star (and some knew before then) that Angela had the potential to be something very special, and now here we have the first indication of the fulfillment of that promise. Just imagine what she and Zac are going to be able to do with time, a budget, and major label support? In this context, it is just possible that The Winner is . . . could assume legendary status as the genesis of a legend.
Angela Rocks!!!.......2007-04-08
This is a really great CD. I loved this season's Nashville Star and have found that over the last few years, the QUALITY of performances have increased to such a point that any one of the finalists would make a great Nashville Star. This year was especially GREAT with the first brother/sister matchup and I was thrilled to see them both make the final two. That is what makes their duet "Too Tough to Handle" so great to be on this CD. Angela you go girl....you are rocking "OLD SCHOOL" country with your "OWN" sound somewhere between Marbara Mandrell and Patsy Cline.

Kittin, a former French pole dancer, and Hacker, a one-time hardcore headbanger, combine forces in a decidedly sleazy niche, but it does make for disarmingly catchy music. Its simple New Wave synth beats and Kittin's (a.k.a. Caroline Herve) deadpan delivery make it easy to imagine you're lounging in a Eurotrash strip joint, circa 1977, as scantily clad dominatrixes torture willing customers. The 1997 single "Frank Sinatra" is more shocking for its spot-on electro atmospherics than for its lyrics, proving that Hacker's punk years were a valuable tutorial for success 2002-style. Throughout, Hacker spins weird little theramin squirms, horror halo tones, and chunky beatbox handclaps, while Kittin discourses about trading sex for cash ("Stock Exchange"), ambitious disco queens ("Nurse"), and, of course, the burlesque life ("Stripper"). First Album is really a one-song affair, but its alluring message is so kitschy, kinked, and campy, the song never sounds the same. --Ken Micallef
Album Description

Mixer Magazine has included the artist in their top wrap up of 2002. Includes the infamous X-rated single 'Frank Sinatra' plus '1982'.

You're only at the tip of Miss Kittin's iceberg............2006-03-29
I only gave 3 stars because she has better stuff. I'm a DJ. Trance, house, break beats. Love GOA. Love Infected Mushroom. Love Miss Kittin. This album is okay for her first outing (and the style is unique in that her newer stuff isn't as out-of-the-basement sounding). I agree that the differential among all the songs isn't that wide. But if you like it at all, GET SOME NEW KITTIN. She's badass!!! I Com and Or are both great, but her mixing / spinning is the best. Mixing Me and On The Road are 2 of the best cds i've ever heard. (When she DJ's, not all the tracks are by her, but she knows how to use them) Get them!
This is the real deal.......2006-02-02
I bought this album about a year ago, and loved it. But it's only over time that I have started to appreciate the more complex aspects of it. This is, without a doubt, the single best Electroclash album out there. The Hacker provides some brilliantly clinical music, against Miss Kitten's detached, alienated, nihilistic and carefully affected slighty-broken English vocals and lyrics.
Many probably bought this because the heard 'Frank Sinatra', and found it quite amusing. That's what I thought at first as well. But after listening to it a few times, you realise it is a pretty smart song, concerning the moral vacuity at the heart of modern celebrity. Miss Kitten is a very astute social commentator, with tongue in cheek at times. Miss Kitten creates an image in our heads - going out with her carefree 'famous friends', eating caviar, drinking champagne, having sex in limos and VIP areas. They then discuss Frank Sinatra, and find the idea of him being dead amusing. A less sophisticated artist would simply write 'modern celebrity is vain, shallow, and vacuous'.
The Hacker is quite clearly a very talented producer and musician, though in terms of producing 'tunes', he only gets a couple of opportunities on this album to really pull out all the stops. Most of the rest are quite minimalist and clinical in the electroclash style - which compliments Miss Kitten's vocals. Whilst this makes most of the songs less danceable, this album is not supposed to be an retro 1980's electronic musical excercise. The best tune on the album is 'Stock Exchange' - a beautifully built, multi-layered tune that could fill any dance floor.
Ladytron are more radio friendly are arguably write better tunes, but this is a far smarter piece of work. More of the same, please.
kind of disappointed........2005-02-10
i bought this because I was looking for something new, electronic, and fun. It's new (to me). It's electronic. It's fun, kind of. But there's a problem. All the songs are non-distinguishable from the others, in my eyes.
The only one that REALLY caught my attention is "Stock Exchange." It's pretty good... actually, it's really good. I even went out to my car in the snow to grab this CD to listen to JUST that song, oh, and to hear her say "You know frank sinatra? he's dead" I thoroughly enjoy that, even though it's stupid.
I don't know. I guess the reason why this didn't get two stars is because I almost see myself growing to really like this. Almost. I can see myself picking it up just to listen to "Stock Exchange," and then just listening to it in the background while I'm in the internet, and eventually I'll begin to NEED it. I love electronic music. Give it to me anyday over anything acoustic.
I don't know if this has helped much, but if you're reading all the glorious reviews claiming this is the best piece of music ever in the world you'll ever hear, and blah blah blah, just make sure you REALLY listen to the music samples, or something. think about it.
Ladytron is much better, and they're in the same musical vein.
bit weak.......2005-01-04
I got this based on the positive reviews and the price. I'm a big fan of Felix da Housecat's Kittenz and da glitz, so I thought I'd try this. I'm not that impressed. The music was simple and emotionless. Like it came from a $20 cassio keyboard...and nothing else. The tracks were ok but all about the same like listening to the same song over and over except for a brief pause of a french track. Oh well I'll keep it but it'll be at the bottom of my playlist.
Best album featuring Miss Kittin.......2004-07-28
I love this CD. I will listen to it on my way to work and EVERYTHING. It's amazing to see how much is on this album, and that Miss Kittin only recently released her first album.
My favorite song on here is 1982. I just LOVE that song, aside from also being the same year I was born, so I kinda can identify with it a bit better.
Other ones that stand out are Frank Sinatra, and I'm sure we've all heard that song by now. Being probably the raunchiest song on the album. I love it!
Other than that, the electric beeps, and slow tempo might now appeal to everyone, but I listen to everything, and for some reason, I really love this album.

This man is the real deal!.......2003-06-02
This guy is as good as it gets if you truly love slide guitar. And as a human being, I must say he ranks right up there as far as I'm concerned. I e-mailed him with a heartfelt response to his music and told him how great his sound was and he personally wrote right back thanking me. He may seem rough around the edges, but he has a heart of gold! His latest, "Burnin'" is another keeper. Keep up the great work, Ron!
Buyer Beware.......2002-09-08
Just recently returned from a 2,000+ mile road trip with a good buddy. Upon leaving town I made the mistake of bringing up Hacker on the cd changer. I couldn't get him to let me change it! I'm going to get me a job sellin french fries and buy myself a ride! This is a gritty, throaty, hard drivin blues album that should be in everyone's collection. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) it isn't. Buy it.
a slide guitarist to send chills down your spine.......2001-12-21
Having discovered the slide guitar in 1965 whilst watching Eric Clapton with John Mayalls Blues band and later, Peter Green who took Erics place, I went back to the roots and listened to Robert Johnson and Howling Wolf, Elmore James and Hound Dog Taylor. Ron Hacker is certainly up there in his ability to chill the spine as he interprets old slide blues and performs his own stuff too. Play this album loud and you will dance all night. I sure would like to see him play live but -when you live in Egypt its kind of hard.
New favorite.......2001-09-15
This is my new favorite CD! Every tune on the disc is excellent. I think I read somewhere that Ron Hacker won an award for 'Best Lowdown Bar Room Blues & Boogie CD'. I couldn't say it any better.

if you love george thorogood and zz top ron hacker is a must for your cd collection. he plays slide and sings like george with wailing slide and a strong ryhthm section.
my favorite song is a great version of willie dixons "back door man"
if you enjoy gritty and non stop rockin blues this is a must for your collection

Terrifying.......2006-02-16
i have listened to the "Eight Songs" three times in my life. I'd say about once every ten years is a good estimate of how often it should be heard. i cannot imagine what it must be like live. I have seen Marat/Sade live, and it was overwhelming, but it's not in the same league with this stuff. Forget Saint-Saens or Mussorgsky, "Eight Songs" is the best Halloween piece ever. If you like contemporary music or just want to be scared out of your wits, you must have this album. Even if you decide not to buy it, I urge you to give it a listen. Your life will never be quite the same again. I promise.
Assaultive........2003-12-17
Assaultively assaultive. With much assaultiveness.
This album is almost completely unlistenable. Eight Songs For a Mad King is one of the most excruciating pieces written for male voice I have ever heard.
I have seen this album, employed on a college campus, as follows:
when the party was over, and it was time for people to go home, you put this album on. Within 20 minutes- no matter how diehard the guests, no matter how much booze- everyone was gone.
I cannot recommend this album for any purpose other than audial torture.
Amazing.......2002-06-01
Both pieces, particularly the "Mad King" are wonderfully excrutiating. I say that in the most complimentary way - far-reaching avant-garde music that is purposeful and energetic and balanced musically and theatrically (as both of these pieces strike me as theatrical as much as they are musical). I don't know what kind of career David Campbell had after this recording was made (in the 70's, I think), but this piece sounds EXTREMELY TAXING vocally, if not ruinous to the voice. He is superb with this difficult piece, though, despite the challenges, and the recording has been engineered very well.
crazy stuff.......2002-04-06
As the only recording of Eight Songs for a Mad King available at the moment, this is essential listening for lovers of contemporary music and wacky musical theater. Peter Maxwell Davies plays here with the potential of the human voice, forcing the "Mad King" George, played by a fine Julius Eastman, to push himself to the limit, making use of a full 5 octaves. The Fires of London was never a particularly strong group, especially in comparison with modern ensembles of the same instrumentation such as Eighth Blackbird. But despite a dry, studio sound and some technical flubs from the players, they do well enough to not damage the overall recording. There are sections that have made me shiver consistently, through dozens of listenings, in particular Eastman's howling at the end.
Miss Donnithorne's Maggot is an easily forgettable work in comparison to Eight Songs, but its an understandable coupling on this disc, and it doesn't detract from the value.
Already a modern classic of great emotional range........1999-03-04
Peter Maxwell Davies has taken the emotional and technical range of the human voice further than anyone before him. Extreme extended techniques allow for a full new pallet of timbre and emotion. Not for the traditionalists in classical music.

Customer Reviews:
The Spirit of England---INDEED !.......2002-12-11
These are absolutely wonderful performances of some of the most timeless works of the British repertoire. Poignancy, refreshment, peacefulness and exhilaration all reside here and not only because of the nature of the compositions but also because of the sensitive conducting of William Boughton. The works of Vaughan Williams are especially tuneful and musically fulfilling, but simply permit Delius' Summer Evening and Butterworth's A Shropshire Lad and Banks of Green Willow to wash over you. Pieces like Finzi's Suite from Love's Labours Lost, Parry's Lady Radnor's Suite and Britten's Variations on a Theme By Frank Bridge are colorful, beguiling and, at times, exotic. Finally, the works of Elgar and the others are given characterful and musically satisfying treatments as well. The entire set is aptly named, and in the finest sense of the title. You can enjoy these discs by listening intently or just for background. Very highly recommended !

FETCHING FINZI.......2001-06-28
One of the most charming CDs in the Nimbus catalogue, this "compilation" affords us a spacious view of Finzi's lyrical musicality and, at the same time, for those not familiar with this vastly neglected British composer, a keen first meeting.
Recast in 1955 from bits and pieces of his incidental music from a 1946 BBC Production of the Shakespeare comedy, Finzi's "Love's Labours Lost" Suite, Op. 28 is sheer pleasure, beginning to end. From the the thrilling opening horn fanfare "Introduction," and the marvelously touching theme that follows, we are instantly enthralled and captured. All ten movements (or sections) are ripe with beauty and imagination. Particularly moving are the "Nocturne," "Dance," and all three "Soliloquies." The enchantment of this music is undeniable and, running a good twenty-seven minutes, vastly pleasing in every aspect. (Were this a budget CD, it would be worth buying for the Suite, alone!)
The Clarinet Concerto in C Minor, Op. 31 (1949) is a glorious work filled with a moody nostalgia (immediately evident from the opening Allegro), genuinely haunting lyricism (as in the tender Adagio) and the most wistful humor (apparent in the Rondo). Clarinetist Alan Hacker brings a heartfelt serenity to this twenty-five minute concerto, and his playing is gorgeous throughout.
The Prelude for String Orchestra, Op. 25 and the Romance for String Orchestra, Op. 11, 5:05 and 7:01, respectively, are both earlier Finzi works (1920s) and, again, bring to the fore his love of melody, sense of nostalgia and longing, and the ambience of memories of a time long gone, yet still very much rooted in the twentieth century.
The recorded sound, for Nimbus, whose CDs are often over-the-edge with a resonant acoustic, is here perfectly judged and atmospheric; in fact, simply superlative.

Finzi orchestral works are a delight.......2000-02-13
This is a marvelous introduction to Gerald Finzi, an underrated English composer whose conservatism left his music out of fashion in mid-century, but who is at last gaining deserved attention today. By all means listen to this and to the Northern Sinfonia's disc on Naxos, which offers another excellent Finzi collection. Those with vocal interests will love the exquisite song cycles on Hyperion (Varcoe & Hill w/Benson) and choral works on Chandos (Finzi Singers).
