Holy Thursday.......2003-04-19

I bought this CD so that I could hear the composer accompany his song "Holy Thursday," which has been making the rounds the past few years among singers. I wasn't disappointed by the performance -- Kreider "lets it all hang out" and Hagen is right there, supporting him. It is a pretty nervy disc, both from the perspective of the performance and the material.

I am new to Hagen's music and I am surprised to find that I really love many of the songs on this CD. He definitely has his own style, but that style ends up sounding like a cross between the composers above and something very different -- probably the fact that he is a gen x'er who grew up in the 70's. I strongly recommend this CD and Hagen's songs to anyone who loves beautiful vocal music set to texts of high literary quality.

Kreider is an old friend of Hagen's, and it is a pleasure to hear Hagen accompany him in these songs. Imagine what it would be like to hear Barber accompany his own songs, and you get an idea of what this CD is about. A real treat!
