Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06
Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.
The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.
--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.
On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.
The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
music of great beauty.......2005-04-24
Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?
Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28
This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.
Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20
This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

Hymn singing as it should be.......2002-01-17
This is a very fine recital drawn from the core of the church and cathedral choir repertoire. Martin Neary proves here (perhaps more convincingly than anyone else) that a good hymn can be just as magical as a through-composed anthem for choir alone, and that the repetition of a single tune over verse after verse need not be a dull experience.
The hymns and tunes selected are indeed among the best-loved works in English church music. "O God, our help in ages past," "Love Divine," "Eternal Father, strong to save," "Be thou my vision," "Guide me, O thou great Redeemer" and the eventide chestnuts "Abide with me" and "The day thou gavest" are all bound to be the most recognisable even to those who are not regular churchgoers. Some of the Victorian composers have immortalised the cream of their talent in such hymns as "The King of Love my shepherd is" and "O thou, who camest from above." Purcell's tune "Westminster Abbey" - extracted from his anthem "O God, thou art my God" and set to the words "Christ is made the sure foundation" - shows how a stroke of inspiration of long ago can survive endless musical change by being adapted and absorbed into hymnody. Another adapted work is Hubert Parry's hymn "O Praise ye the Lord," actually the final part of an extended anthem ("Hear my words, ye people") and is presented on this disc in its original form, making for an interesting and refreshing change to the repetitive verses of the rest of the collection. Completing the programme are settings that fall more definitely outside of the realms of congregational singing: the powerful "Kontakion of the Dead" to an ancient tune and harmonisation from Kiev; the moving Air from County Derry set to the verse "I would be true" for unaccompanied boys voices (as sung by these very choristers at the Funeral of Princess Diana in 1997); Martin Neary's little tune "Studland" written for the blessing "May the Grace of Christ our Saviour;" his lovely arrangement of Sebastian Temple's "Make me a channel of your peace" (also sung at the Diana funeral) is here as well. Each item is a gem in its own right.
In this performance, each gem is polished to a high standard. Contrast is effectively made by the use of subtly different forces for different verses - there is an appropriate use of boisterous tenors and basses in "O worship the King" at the verse "O tell of his might," and a plethora of soul-stirring unaccompanied verses, particularly in "Praise to the Holiest in the Height." (I would challenge anybody to find a more moving moment in hymnody, achieved with such utter simplicity, than the performance of "And in the garden secretly, and on the Cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die" as it is on this disc.) This is not to say that Martin Baker's accompaniments are not another wonderful element in the performance: for instance, his clever doubling of the tune at a low octave in "Who would true valour see" for the words "No lion can him fright; he'll with a giant fight." On the subject of words, every single one is treated with care and attention to its meaning, individually and in context - the ensemble is finely honed and the enunciation is immaculate. Martin Neary draws every ounce of poetical significance from the words in these hymns, making real sense of them and allow them to speak as music, not simply as long lines of verse to get through as quickly as possible (which is often the problem arising with hymn singing in many churches today). As a finishing touch, several hymns have descants and alternative harmonisations, many of them supplied by Neary, who knows how to make them effective, stunning and highly original. An ensemble of trumpets and drums joins the Abbey Choir and organ for the performance of "All people that on earth do dwell" in the festive arrangement by Vaughan Williams - this is as stirring as many of the other hymns are moving.
This collection is a sample of hymnody that (in my humble opinion) far outweighs others I have encountered. There's a certain joy in listening to these performances - a joy that somehow remains fresh on repeated hearings. An inspired and inspirational programme: most warmly recommended!

One of the basics, plain and simple........2005-10-17
I can hardly ever seem to find any choral CD anywhere that truly hits the spot, and the reason is clearly that this was one of my very first. Nobody who loves English cathedral music or English choral singing in general should be without this disc, it is a basic. Aside from the approaching the highest possible standards of choral singing and being an exemplar of the stereotypical English choral sound (straight-tone sopranos, not straight-tone EVERYONE, clear and floating tenors, etc.), most of the tracks on this recording are total gems.
Of particular note are the Howells and Vaughan Williams, several of the Renaissance pieces, probably the best rendition of Tavener's Hymn to the Mother of God out there, "A Litany" by Walton, and Harris' "Bring Me, O Lord God" is a stunningly gorgeous end to the CD that will give you chills.
Eternal light.......2005-09-23
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church with this title, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The title of this disc derives from modern hymn (Charles Wood, in the early twentieth century) set to a more ancient text - a good example of the pairing of the ancient and the modern, the traditional and the timely.

As Good As It Gets.......2003-05-27
What a beautiful CD of English sacred music. I can't imagine a more perfect group of musicians than John Rutter and the Cambridge singers to capture the full range of emotional and spiritual expression in these selections. This is as good as sacred music performance gets.
Wonderful!.......1999-05-08
This CD is the most touching and beautiful collection of music from my homeland: it moves me beyond words.
Rutter's Cambridge Singers at their best.......1998-09-12
Spanning the centuries from Tallis to Tavener, this collection is well-chosen and shows off the skills of the choir and its conductor. If you are a devotee of the "straight-tone" choir (as the Cambridge Singers always are), any of their CDs would be delight. However, this one (and a similar one, "Faire is the Heaven") is almost like a good back-rub: leaving you relaxed, invigorated, and wanting more. (Assuming English church music is on your short list of favorite genres.)
Of special note are the title cut, Rutter's own "Loving Shepherd", and the last, "Bring Us, O Lord" by Harris. They are exquisitely conducted and sung. You want the last 6-8 measures of "Loving Shepherd" to last forever.

The Grand Climax of English Culture.......2006-12-02
John Dowland (1563 - 1626) and William Byrd (1543 - 1623): Goe Nightly Cares. Consort Music and Songs. Performed by Fretwork (Wendy Gillespie; Richard Campbell; Julia Hodgson; William Hunt; Richard Boothby) with Christopher Wilson, lute, Michael Chance, countertenor [CD1] and Elizabeth Liddle, viol [CD2]. Recorded at the Maltings, Snape, Suffolk (England) in December 1987 (CD1) and April 1989 (CD2). Total time: CD1 74'57"; CD2 61'25". Originally released on single CDs in 1989 and 1990. Re-issued as a 2-CD box in 1999 as Virgin Veritas 7243 5 61561 2 8.
The reigns of Elizabeth I. (1558 - 1603) and of James I. (1603 - 1620) of England produced the grand climax of English culture. The literary side of this is well-known (Spencer, Sidney, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, Webster, Beaumont and Fletcher, Donne, the earlier Metaphysical poets). The musical aspects, on the other hand, have only recently been made available to a wider public by exponents of the early music movement. Anthony Rooley, Emma Kirkby and the Consort of Musicke performed madrigals and lute songs of the period for Decca; and Fretwork set themselves the task of recording "viol consorts" from the same decades. The viol has nothing to do with the violin or viola; it is the "viola da gamba", a nasal sounding string instrument that in Renaissance times was manufactured in several different sizes and often played "in consort", i. e. by a group of five to six musicians with a "family" of different-sized viols. Although the nasal quality of the sound lends itself to melancholy, many of the pieces played here are, in fact, dances, only John Dowland's "Lachrimae" ("Tears") and his "signature tune" "Semper Dowland, semper dolens" being really deliberately melancholy. Byrd's "In Nomines" are based on the plain-chant tradition, apparently going back to a popular melody from one of John Taverner's masses. The Consort Songs are similar to lute songs of the period but accompanied by viols.
The performances sound just as riveting today as they presumably did when these CDs first appeared around 17 years ago. The viol playing by Fretwork is absolutely spot-on, with Christopher Wilson's lute underlay providing a perfect contrast. On CD1, there are six songs performed by Michael Chance, a superb countertenor. What a pity that the sung texts are not printed in the very thin booklet! This is fascinating music that deserves more than a peremptory hearing.
As a footnote I should perhaps add that Dowland's Lachrimae and the attached dances have also been recorded on a consort of renaissance violins by the Parley of Instruments Renaissance Violin Consort, led by Peter Holman (on Hyperion). This disc is equally to be recommended, and I am glad to have both versions of this meditative but moving music.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-11-20
Firstly, the buyer should know that this 2 CD album is a combination of almost the same song material that is included on the single CD album 'Goe Nightly Cares' and 'Music for Viols'. Also the above list is not totally accurate as to the songs that Michael 'Chance sings; so here they are: by Wm Byrd: 'If women could be fair'-'Lullaby, my sweet little baby'-'Ah silly soul'-'Ye sacred muses'-and 'Come to me, grief forever'; and by Dowland:'Goe Nightly cares, the enemy to rest' and 'Lasso vita mia'. It is really an excellent group of songs sung by Chance (countertenor)with his usual perfection. I maintain that no one sings this type of song as well as he does. Christopher Wilson very ably accompanies Chance on the lute and Paul Nicholson on the organ. Fretwork is an excellent groups and their performance includes the music of Wm. Byrd-Elway Bevin-Orlando Gibbons-John Dowland-Wm. Lawes and Anthony Holborne.
Sweet and Melancholy.......2000-01-25
This is a splendid collection of definitive quality performances by two of the greatest Elizabethan masters. The music is rich and moving, though the faint of heart should be advised that the selections are unremittingly melancholy. I find this an attraction. Nevertheless, it isn't an ideal choice for light classical music, nor as atmospheric background for a rollicking Elizabethan theme party .Neither is it ideal for relaxation--it demands too much attention. Highly recommended for contemplative listeners.
Penetrating music and fine performances.......2000-01-14
I was only somewhat familiar with this genre of music, but when a friend gave me this disc, I became very entranced with it. This music has a folk, Hausmusik feel, but with such masterly compositional effecs throughout all the pieces. Particularly fine is track 6 on the first disc, which reminds me of Barber's Adagio for Strings. Another lovely touch is the ensemble's subtle descending scale at cadences. Simply haunting, and most highly recommended.
Nice 2-for-1 collection of consort music........1999-06-30
The first CD, recorded in 1989, features Michael Chance on six tracks (no texts included), the second CD, recorded in 1987, is solely viol music.
There isn't anyone better at this genre than Fretwork so further comment is needless.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing, with such talent on show........2005-05-10
The performances are generally not very inspiring. Catherine King is usually smooth on the ear, but here, her exaggerated use of period English accent is annoying and distracting.
The recorded sound is also overly bright for my taste.
In all, there are perhaps three tracks on this disc I would enjoy hearing again. The rest are well below expectations.
So So.......2003-12-24
This is a selection of some of Dowland's most famous pieces performed in appropriate Renaissance style. Unfortunately, the quality of the performances is mixed. Some pieces are performed very well, others not. The singer on this CD, Catherine King, is inconsistent. In some songs, like "Come again, sweet love..." she is good. In others, her diction and phrasing is suspect. I may also be put off by her apparently strong Scots accent. Choice of tempi in several pieces is poor. A couple of Dowland's most famous songs are represented by instrumental versions, which are nice, but pale compared with the actual songs.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29
John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.
A marvelous interpretation!.......2005-07-05
This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

Customer Reviews:
Transcendent Beauty.......2004-08-14
I am surprised that no one else has reviewed this album. Most likely it's because it's not terribly well known.
Anyway, this is an absolutely gorgeous sampling of Russian Orthodox Church music. The Italian baroque influences are evident in some of the pieces, but the rich Russian chordal style always comes through.
The voices are transcendent, and truly evoke a sense of the sacred. If you are ever feeling angry, sad, hurt or stressed out, this is the perfect album to put you at ease. Track 19 will take your breath away.

If you had to reduce your recordings of 16th-century instrumental music to only one disc (a horrendous thought!), you'd do very well to keep this one. Rarely is any recording of any repertoire so well conceived, programmed, and performed--and rarely is the music so consistently and incredibly beautiful. The age in which this music was created may have been infinitely different from ours, but we dearly need music with such sincerity and heart these days. Lutenist Julian Bream and his period-instrument ensemble draw us into an enchanting world of beautiful, sometimes heartbreaking melodies and lovely harmonies. Occasionally we hear a lively dance, and a few times we hear Robert Tear's plaintive tenor. But mostly it's the viols, Renaissance flute, cittern, and lute performing some of the finest examples of English Renaissance music we're ever likely to hear. --David Vernier
