Speechless.......2001-07-21
Is this funk? Is it techno? Is it downbeat? No. This is a different, more interesting beast. I would called it funky existentialism. The music is amazing and captivating, but never makes you get out of your seat. Perfect. Ebb and Flow has a long sample from the movie "Network" that basically sums up the whole album. If you've ever seen the movie, it helps define this music even more. Basically, this is funk for the human collective, the one world/one business culture. But instead of fearing and fighting it, Baby Mammoth says, "Ok, here's how it is...let's get down."
One of the best Pork cuts........2000-06-19
Baby Mammoth remains one of the yet undiscovered wonders of the acclaimed Pork Records (together with Fila Brazillia and Bullitnuts). Classified as lounge music, electronica or electrofunk, theses bands have long ago discarded any of these sordid labels, creating something fresh and undescribable upon each release. Active for many years and records, Baby Mammoth's latest release is "Motion Without Pain", and it shows they have done their homework. Opening with the Moby-esque "Elephunk", the album is a complete delight, combining different styles that match perfectly, like the funeral like trumpet and the up beats in "Tasty Maloney", or the overused sample from "Aquarela do Brasil" in the wonderful "The Ghost of Henry". "Ebb & Flow" begins with a menacing speech about the human nature, only to dissolve into a charming bass-based tune. Enjoy without pain.

Goodness.......2006-04-02
First and foremost, if this is the first time you've checked out Baby Mammoth, you need to immediately add every CD by them, fila brazillia and Bullitnuts to your list.
Baby Mammoth have a multitude of timeless, indisputably amazing Cds that border on trip hop, funk, etc.
This cd is certainly a little more repetitive than other Mammoth releases, but still has that signature chilled out excellence. One thing I absolutely love about Baby Mammoth is that they don't spare the live instrumentation. Most of their music is frought with beautiful guitar licks, saxaphone solos and flutes, etc.
All the while, they craft beautifully executed electronic beats and rhythms in a way that only they can do.
Check it out, order their entire collection, because as these cds become unavailable, an entire segment of music will be going with it, because they make some unique sonic excellence.
I only gave it 4 because there are better Mammoth Albums.
Elephunky.......2002-05-21
This is one of the finest downtempo/acid-jazz albums around and it's a shame more people haven't heard it. In the same type of groove as Thievery Corporation and the Guidance compliations, this is music to truly chill by. However, Baby Mammoth is a little darker, a little bit more sinister than some of your other laid back lounge artists. The song "Ebb and Flow" includes a great sample from the movie "Network" and pretty much sums up the paranoid-funk feel of the whole album. What is it with these Brits and their subtle paranoia? (see also Radiohead, Pink Floyd, etc...) Really though, this album feels like it's 4 in the morning and you're still out on the town but your head's starting to get a little bit fuzzy and you're starting to wind down. By far the finest of the Pork recordings.
