From the Archives Vol.1... I'm all ready for Volume 2!.......2007-02-24
Oh Happy Days! After nearly two decades, one of the hardest working bands around has pulled some of their "shelved" work to create the first "From the Archives" album. This 1o song collection (with a bonus video clip of "Cold Blooded") has the raw feel of Another Mayberry and Midnight Radio, but with a crisp recording quality. As a salute to the BHTM old school material on it the CD has a great retro look to it designed to resemble an old 45 record.
Some of the album highlights. The opening track "I Never Loved You" hits you right away with an aggressive Blues riff. "Love Besides the Weather" is a moody, atmospheric tune that reminds me of the intensity of "Geography of a Horse Dreamer." "House Burn Down" is just fantastic and "Healing Train" is powerful especially when Todd starts growling the lyrics as the tension builds. "Carnival" is one of the more experimental songs on the record, but does not disappoint. "Brother John" is the only song that is from a previous album, but the version here is an earlier one. As is the style and tradition of BHTM, there are no bad songs to be found. Even the reggae inspired "There is a Reason" makes your head bob to the rhythm.
Fans of the band should enjoy this album, and diehard fans and throwbacks to their earlier days should absolutely revel with this collection of work. Newcomers to the sound and style of BHTM or those going to a live show might do better with some of their more recognized work first as the songs here may rarely be played live. But as far as I'm concerned, what's old is new... and spectacular.

Worth the price for Ari Hest's take On Springsteens "I'm On Fire".......2007-01-22
This type of cd, is something people either love or hate. I usually love this type of cd. Songs performed, in their stripped-down form. Ininitally purchased this disc, because I am a big fan of Ari Hest. No surprise then, that his song is without a doubt my favorite on the disc. Other notable songs include Kyle Riabko's "what Did I get Myself Into" (it really shows how much talent this kid has). Ana Nalick "breathe", Antigone Rising "Don't look back"(can't wait to hear a studio disc from them). I went into this cd, knowing 11 of the 15 songs, so it wasn't really a risk. It shows that all or most of these artists really do have talent. AS I stated b4, this is the only commercial disc you can get the ari track on, and it was tworth the price for that, but even if you aren't a fan of his,
this cd can be an interesting introduction for many, to alot of these artists. Get it, while you can, and b4 theprice is untouchable.

Customer Reviews:
great collection of songs.......2007-06-17
Questa prima raccolta di rarità è decisamente superiore al secondo volume, il sound è buono e la scelta dei brani idem, bella la versione acustica di teaser, sempre grande musica quando si parla di Tommy!
the man who replaced legendary Ritchie Blackmore in DP.......2003-09-05
yes he was Tommy Bolin an highly talented american guitar player in the middle of 70's. He was oriented firtsly in a jazz rock fusion before he entered the hard rock n roll in Deep purple 1975. The cd is dedicated to his music and his fans, the cd described his multiple solo works before & after he joined Deep purple in 1975. The other Tommy's works, for instance such as the demo songs he played on his 1st solo "TEASER" album & 2nd album "PRIVATE EYES", the songs he played in James Gang 1974 (one year before he joined Deep purple 1975) like sister andrea.
A must for all deep purple & Tommy fans!
Talk about smoke on the water!!!.......2002-01-26
Tommy Bolin was a Native American half-breed (Sioux) from Sioux City, Iowa. Enthralled by rock 'n roll after his father took him to a Elvis performance when he was about nine or ten years old, Tommy never looked back. He had to leave high school in Sioux City due to the fact that he simply refused to cut his hair!
He eventually made his way to the Denver/Boulder metropolitan area and hooked up with several local musicians. His guitar playing ability was immediately noticed by all who jammed with him, and he eventually helped form "Zephyr", a psychedelic/blues/jazz/fusion (yes, they (he) were that good!) band that had the front range of Colorado and the majority of the mid-west standing up and taking notice.
However, due to strange political manueverings in the recording industry, "Zephyr" never really took off. Oddly enough, they simply couldn't land a recording contract. It is somewhat apparent as to why this occured. Tommy Bolin and "Zephyr" were simply about twenty years ahead of everybody!! Recording industry execs were hesitant to pursue a band that nobody could figure out...but everybody loved!
Archives Vol-1 is a great collection of Tommy's guitar playing ability. You get a little bit of everything here. you will hear acoustic, electric demos, live songs, and just plain jamming with this CD. The killer cut of this entire CD however is "Shake The Devil" (No.10). Though it starts out kinda rough, (This was a "King Biscuit Flower Hour" recording) Tommy steps in mid way through the song and absolutely blisters everybody's ears! Check out Norma Jean Bell also on the sax! (ex- Frank Zappa). She steps in right along with Tommy and plays her heart out! A great jam! The likes that we will probably never hear again.
Tommy Bolin was talented enough to play with Billy Cobham, Deep Purple ("Come Taste The Band"), The James Gang, Alphonse Mouzon, and of course Zephyr, but what really set him apart was his solo efforts. If you have never heard "Post Toastees" find it and buy it, listen to it. Because that song is probably the best description of Tommy Bolin anybody could hope to hear. Sadly, "Post Toastees" is not on this disc. But look around, it's worth the hunt.
Having supplied that info, it is important to mention, that there is also a substantive version of "Wild Dogs" and "Teaser" on this CD. Motley Crue were to copy "Teaser" years later.
Tommy Bolin could play with anybody, as well as just about any kind of music, and do it well. If you are looking for a true guitar virtuoso, this recording is for you.
This wonderful prodigy was taken from us, in December of 1976. He had just finished opening for Jeff Beck in Miami, when the lure of a "quick fix" quite literally killed him. We can only wonder what could have been had he lived. But he put out enough music ahead of time, I believe, that pretty much answers that question.
THIS IS WHAT STARTED IT ALL.......2000-03-06
From The Archives Vol 1. is the first of many releases coming from the newly founded Tommy Bolin Archives. With as much success as this release had it's a blessing for them to keep releasing new and undiscovered Tommy Bolin music. All of the material on here is unreleased( note that most of Tommy Bolin releases from the archives is all unreleased), and of top notch quality. there is a ton of great stuff to be heard on here. The acoustic numbers are the best. Some have been heard before but on his studio albums and some were songs that he never got around to record in the studio. Wild Dogs, Evening Rain, Teaser, Meaning Of Love and Jump Back are all just Tommy, his voice and guitar. Red Skies appears being performed by Tommy's favorite band Energy, the original version can be found on The James Gang Miami CD. A couple of live jams like You Know and Shake The Devil are excellent just as with everything on here. This is the place to start for the die hard Bolin fans or those who are curious to what makes Tommy Bolin a legend. To bad this stuff has to surface some 20 years after his death but I'm glad to have it now.
Guitar and a VOICE!!!.......1999-04-24
"From the Archives, Vol. 1" is a great showcase for this musicain's often overlooked talent. Tommy will always be known as great guitar player but it's his voice that completes the Bolin package. Listening to the songs is bittersweet. To hear the intimate demo versions of his classics lets us in on the heart that was Tommy Bolin but gives the listener an overwhelming sense of loss at what could have been.
"From the Archives, Vol. 1" is a great companion to Tommy's two solo recordings and should be augmented with his work done by Alphonse Mouzon, Billy Cobham, the James Gang and Deep Purple.
