Album Description

When it was first released as a four-LP package in 1972, this marathon live recording hit #3 on Billboard's Pop album chart and was certified RIAA gold. Following up their 1971 album Chicago III, this historic set features all the early hits and spotlights Chicago at the peak of their initial success. Painstakingly remastered, it now includes a full disc of previously unreleased material showcasing their trademark horns, Robert Lamm's keyboards and vocals, and the guitar virtuosity of the late Terry Kath. The set's packaging makes a nod to the original LP release, with an outer cardboard slipcase, four CDs in individual jackets, a 36-page booklet with original LP artwork, and mini-reproductions of the three huge posters that were part of the original release.

Walter Parazaider (sax, woodwinds), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), Robert Lamm (keyboards, vocals), Terry Kath (guitar, vocals), Danny Seraphine (drums), and Peter Cetera (bass, vocals) formed Chicago in the Second City in 1967. They released their debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, in 1969. The double LP sold more than two million copies on the strength of sweet pop hits and psychedelic rock explorations that appealed to traditional Top 40 fans as well as hipper listeners tuning in to the new free-form FM radio.

This was just the start of Chicago's enduring popularity, which includes five consecutive #1 albums, 21 Top 10 singles, and worldwide sales of over 120 million. Chicago continues to be a major concert draw, their lineup now including Bill Champlin (keyboards, vocals), Jason Scheff (bass, vocals), Keith Howland (guitar), and Tris Imboden (drums), along with founding members Lamm, Parazaider, Loughnane, and Pankow.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live recordings of all time.......2007-07-04

Chicago in their early days cranking out jazz/rock inovative music at Carnegie Hall. Terry Kath is sorely missed from the group. His influence on Chicago was essential to their early sound. If you like electric guitar buy this collection.

5 out of 5 stars At Carnegie Hall, Vol. 1-4 Chicago IV.......2007-01-19

This is a must have for any true Chicago fan.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must !.......2007-01-12

One of the greatest bands of the pop/rock world in full swing! All of Chicago's indispensable tunes are there and the recording, in the present Rhino transfer, is more than adequate; and, to top it all,the documentation and packaging should be seen as a model by the industry. This box-set would definitely be part of my remote planet discography !

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, timelessly captures the moment.......2006-11-03

When I was 13 I had an album collection consisting of Zeppellin, Sabbath, Cooper, Cream, Beethovin, Bach and the brand-new Chicago at Carnegie Hall. I haven't heard this album in 20 years (since my last record player gave up the ghost and I switched to cd's and electronic formats) and my wife surprised me last night with this 4 cd set. WOW! This is how live music should be performed. For those out there who actually LIKE live music to sound just like the studio version this isn't for you. But if you want to hear what a late 60's era hard-working touring band sounded like night after night when mainstream audiences cared about musicianship and composition without the "repairing" of such recordings by later studio work...then this set is an excellent example. This has got to be on anyone's list of top ten live rock albums. I recommend a strong buy!

5 out of 5 stars CHICAGO AND TERRY KATH IN A DIFFERENT ERA (APRIL 1971).......2006-09-25

Beautifully remastered, excellent packaging. This set contains a fourth disc which you hear some really awesome Terry Kath guitar solos. The fourth disc really solidifies the great guitar work of Terry Kath. The extra disc includes "an hour in the shower" which makes the price of this set worth buying, and is a must for any hardcore Chicago fan. The fourth disc was done under Lee Loughane's supervision and painstakingly mixed by veteran engineer Dave Donnelly.I am not a live album fan, but Carnegie Hall really has some tunes that closely match the studio recordings beautifully. The horns and flutes are really loud and sharp and really stand out while listening. I enjoyed this live recording.Carnegie Hall was done when James William Guercio was the producer of Chicago records, long before the days of David Foster who turned them into a 1980s hit machine. Foster during the 1980s helped Chicago score some huge hits, while Chicago became nothing more than Peter Ceteras back up band, setting up Ceteras own solo career. Foster also limited drummer Danny Seraphines drumming during the 80s recordings. Carnegie Hall, catches Chicago in an incredible stage of thier career. The remastering has been done with great care and expertise. Rhino has done another excellent job with the packaging, includes (booklet and posters). One thing that amazes me is while reading the booklet I found out Chicago has been putting on live shows since May 23rd, 1967 and still going strong today, amazing! Enjoy carnegie hall if you dont like live recordings you might make an exception for "Chicago at Carnegie Hall"

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of songs you'll recognize .......2007-07-13

This collection is a great mixture of the songs I was listening to on the radio in my pre-teen years. But they are 1000 times clearer now, the talent of the singers is more evident and the melodies are much more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Song's of the great 50's.......2000-06-11

I've heard and played all of these song's from back in the 50's on this CD. Some of the greatest music of all time's came from that era. I am looking for the song's "Love Walked Right In" & "Hernandoes Hideaway" from that era. The Singer's I can't remember. If you can be of help, I am Larry F. Rees "E" mail - lfr@ee.net Thank You

Largely the work of formidable musician-arranger Mulatu Astatqe, the 14 instrumentals here were originally issued on two LPs in 1972 and 1974 in Ethiopia, and represent a curious blend of soul-jazz and R&B with just a smattering of Ethiopian roots breaking up the stabbing horn lines, wah-wah guitars, and simmering electric piano. Curious, because at the time jazz was not very popular in Ethiopia, but that is no reflection on the quality of these primitively recorded sides of idiosyncratic Afro-funk. The grooves are long and laconic, the sound reminiscent of Miles Davis's "In a Silent Way" paired with Cannonball Adderly and Roy Ayers. But, as with all things Ethiopian, the music retains its own unique and unmistakable identity, one somewhere between a late-night jazz hole-in-the-wall group and a supper club belly-dancing combo. There are some very inventive arrangements and vigorous soloing, rendering a highly articulate and listenable music that was, at the time, doomed to go nowhere. Such is the retrospective value of reissues. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......!.......2007-02-14

Wow. I can't stop listening to this album..it's incredible. How did I live without it for so long? It has this mysterious, sexy, intimate, exotic, beautiful sound. My life feels just a tad more complete now. HOT

4 out of 5 stars very cool and unusual Afro Jazz/Funk.......2007-01-06

I bought this CD on a whim after it was recommended by Amazon, and I really like this album. Fans of Fela and other Afro Jazz / Afro Pop will probably like this one. The difference is that this is EAST African. While the music is primarily jazz and R&B, there are very clear local influences, which sound somewhat Middle Eastern to my uninitiated Western ears. It's unlike any other CD that I've ever heard, but it's familiar sounding enough to enjoy right away.

The sound quality is what it is! It's from Ethiopia more than 30 years ago! The sound quality is relatively primitive, but it's not something that should keep the open-minded listener from thoroughly enjoying this music. I could even argue that the sound gives it another unique touch.

My daunting challenge for me now is to determine which one of the other 19 volumes of this series to get next.

5 out of 5 stars a pleasure every time.......2006-08-30

This is powerful, mystical, ancient, ethereal, psychedelic stuff, wrapped in the raw familiar shapes of jazz, blues, funk, and pop. The horn melodies are dark and hypnotic, punctuated by guitar tones ranging from raw and distorted to reverb wah-wah, joined by electric piano, flute, and various percussion. I love most of the pieces, I think I realized around track #4 that this was special. And listen to track 5, the horns kick it off for the first 2 seconds, then they go away until a sax comes in at 1:22 and plays for awhile as the rhythm just pounds away in the background, finally the horns rip back in at 2:20 and keep at it until the end with a great repeating riff. The last track even approaches a sort of Stooges 'LA Blues'.
I also really love the Ethiopiques albums with Mahmoud Ahmed, I think they are #6 & 7 in the series.
The real charm of this music comes from the way it sounds, the way it was recorded. Raw and low-fi and brimming with soul, the needle pushing into the red. Dig it.

5 out of 5 stars Where have these guys been all my life........2006-07-27

I got this CD after viewing Broken Flower, the movie. I loved the soundtrack and went to Amazon to find the CD. They helpfully showed me the Ethiopiques CD, and I liked their cuts on the movie soundtrack, so I thought I'd take a chance. Everyone I play it for wants to know more about them. I know very little, but love everything on this CD. I will definitly try more of their stuff. My daughter says, "this music makes me happy."

1 out of 5 stars Great music, bad quality.......2006-07-09

This album has a great selection of music, but the recording quality is very bad. Try to listen to it before you buy it

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ted Nugent, please phone home.......2007-06-25

Ultra-Lounge Bachelor Pad Royale gives us a great selection of steamy romantic hits from the late 1950s and early 1960s that still sound great today! The lush and creative musical arrangements hold your attention rather easily and the quality of the sound is excellent.

The CD track set kicks off with "The Theme From Route 66" performed by Nelson Riddle & His Orchestra. The sound is cool, savvy and the melody goes along at just the right pace. The strings and percussion enhance this classic number, too. Great! The next track has The John Buzon Trio performing "Caravan" using the organ as they so often did to embellish the beauty of the number. The percussion hits it all just right and "Caravan" boasts a romantic and relentlessly upbeat melody.

"Cool" by Lou Busch & His Orchestra gives us an awesome rendition of this song from West Side Story; and "The Beast" by Milt Buckner oozes class and a certain type of panache you rarely hear these days. Like John Buzon and his buddies; the arrangement for "The Beast" makes good use of the organ. The piano shines on this number, too.

Alvino Rey's rendition of "Night Train" slinks along with a steamy, naturally romantic style that will prove beyond doubt that this music still retains its high quality control to this very day. Martin Denny was doing a lot of exotica by the late 1950s, but his version of "Harlem Nocturne" is sublime! The chimes work well; and the piano together with the bass make this number an instant classic. Hooray!

Sam Butera and his buddies perform a medley of "The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams/Fever" that leaves you sweating from its hot, hot, hot delivery; and "Street Scene '58" makes great use of the sax to romanticize this tune.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. The last two tracks on this CD are Julie London's "Black Coffee" and "Melancholy Serenade" by King Curtis. Julie sings "Black Coffee" without a single superfluous note; but you should know that although "Melancholy Serenade" gets the royal treatment from King Curtis, this is not the interpretation of this song that I have heard before. Instead of the dramatic and somewhat boisterous use of the horns; King Curtis's rendition places the organ squarely into the spotlight of the arrangement and the single horn tones down this angle drastically. Nevertheless, the arrangement works well.

The liner notes include an informative essay by R. J. Smith; and the song credits and recording dates are there for you, too. The artwork reflects good taste and there are even two drink recipes!

I highly recommend this CD for fans of "lounge music" and for people who want to remember a time when cool music for lovers actually was cool music for lovers.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......2007-05-13

Brought me back to the days of tuxedos, secret agents and private detectives. Cool, very cool.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE ULTRA LOUNGE!!.......2007-05-12

Nothing can be finer that Ultra Lounge - never a bad thing to say.

5 out of 5 stars Title a bit of a misnomer but..........2007-01-27

Hard to see how some of the tracks on this disc fit in with the whole late-night bachelor pad ethos as they are, quite simply, and in the words of the great Stan Freberg, "too loud, man". That said, this is a great CD. The music is fabulous and beautifully re-mastered (Cy Coleman's "Playboy's Theme" is the epitome of bachelor pad cool and, by itself, worth the price of the disc) while RJ Smith's liner notes are, as ever, entertaining, witty and evocative. In fact the whole package is life-affirming, high-quality fun: just the thing to chase those blues away.

5 out of 5 stars I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10

The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.

Adagio follows in the rosin-dusted footsteps of The Impressionists, A Different Mozart, and A Different Prelude. As with those releases, it was produced by Dawn Atkinson and features many of the same artists. The results are as varied as the musicians. Violinist Tracy Silverman cuts one of his patented echo-delayed pizzicato violin arrangements of a Bach arioso, while Patrick O'Hearn drapes a somber keyboard shroud around the Adagio from Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman. Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning find the Celtic air in the Adagio from Handel's Sonata in G, while Philip Aaberg discovers infinity between the notes of Barber's ubiquitous Adagio for Strings. He stretches the melody across his piano in finely drawn lines, subtlety filled out with synthesizer undertones. Subtlety is a casualty on Philipe Saisse's bongos, bells, and synth arrangement of Bach's Air on a G String. It's also sacrificed in a corny confection of Handel's Sarabande by Paul Schwartz. His ham-fisted electronic keyboards would've sounded dated even before Switched-On Bach. But Adagio features plenty of musicians who are willing to surrender themselves to their elegiac themes, including guitarist Steve Erquiaga, Mike Marshall, and Edgar Meyers. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Simply Gorgeous !.......2003-10-05

This is the first Windham Hill compilation I've purchased in a long, long time, and I am thrilled with the music.
The artistry is stunning, the artists bring themselves to the music while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the original piece.
My favorite is Grieg's Nocturne, arranged and performed by Steve Erquiaga. I have been in love with his music from the moment
I heard his CD "Cafe Paradiso" (Imaginary road Records). It is absolutely stunning!
When I saw that he was on "Adagio" I went for it. I'm so happy that I did ...
Other hightlights for me are Philip Aaberg's "Adagio for Strings", Tracy Silverman's "Arioso" ..... they're all beautiful.
Thank You for this wonderful music.

The most consistently enticing disc in the Rock Instrumental Classics series, this is both a great party and driving record and a window on the rhythms that powered soul music in the '60s (and early '70s, in two cases). In addition to some obvious choices (the four Booker T. & the MG's tracks, the Mar-Keys' "Last Night"), it also offers some left-field picks, such as the varied approaches to Latin music offered by Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and El Chicano. The stock of virtuoso performances here is all but endless: the bass-and-drums breakdown on Cliff Nobles and Co.'s "The Horse," the glinting guitar solo on the Bar-Kays' "Soul Finger," Hugh Masekela's questing trumpet on "Grazing in the Grass." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Rock Instrumentals 4.......2007-05-13

This cd has all my favorite instrumentals from the 60's. The sound quality is good. There are also some songs I don't remember, but all the tracks are good to listen to. I will check out other cd's in this collection and would buy others. They were not remakes but original artists.

5 out of 5 stars Music Happiness.......2007-03-22

I love this cd. The songs in it such as "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles, are a nice addition to the cds I already have. Instrumentals are a nice get away from the regular kind of music. Instrumentals bring music happiness to people like me. They go along perfectly with the vocals. God bless you Amazon for having this cd in stock and thank you. You are my absolute favorite of all department stores when it comes to shopping. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Review of "rock instrumental classics".......2006-03-23

I found this product satisfactory. It came in a timley fashion.

There was no problem with the packaging. The music is great.

Each song was certainly a classic. I would purchase more

volumes.

4 out of 5 stars This one's a keeper!.......2005-10-18

I am extremely happy with this CD. I recognized only half of the 18 tracks by their titles before ordering, but the ones I did recognize were good enough to sell me on the CD.

It turned out when I first played this CD that all of the songs that I had failed to recognize by title were very familiar tunes and very good ones. This was a very pleasant surprise.

This is a great CD! I remind everyone that I intend to save the "five star" rating for CDs that just absolutely blow me out of the water, so the four star that I gave this CD means that I really, really like it and heartily recommend it. I have just started buying and reviewing classic rock CDs, so I have not as yet given a five star rating to any CDs.

Go ahead and order this one!

Tom

5 out of 5 stars Too cool for words.......2004-10-02

This is a great collection of soul instrumentals. Every single track here made the Pop Top 40. There is not a single bad track here. The CD begins and ends with Booker T. & The M.G's, and rightly so, since they were the most dominant soul instrumental group of all time. In between, you get one great instrumental after another. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Volumes 1 and 2 Hot!!! Volumes 3 and 4 Not as Hot..........2007-02-15

Volumes 1 and 2 are must haves. You will play those for the long run. Volumes 3 and 4 have a lot of tracks for which you can just hit the ff/skip/next button. I wonder what #5 will be. What was hot about 1 and 2 is that they were far away from and better than what gets played on the radio. It now seems that hidden beach is headed to that corner of the jazz segment called mainstream. I worry that #5 will be more hip hop and less jazz and more for my son than for me. After all, if I were the VP of marketing, that's what I would do. I bought #1 and #2 and just about every song was a hit. Buy this CD and you'll have to skip around a lot to find the hits. Check Napster or Walmart and pay 99cents for each of the 4 songs on here you'll play over and over again. Be cautious about going all out and buying this whole CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2006-08-14

Once again, Hidden Beach Records has put together another excellent collection music. This fusion of hip hop and jazz is a great way to be introduced to this particular genre of music. I recommend Unwrapped 4 to all jazz lovers, new and old.

4 out of 5 stars Escape to Hidden Beach.......2006-08-05

This CD stays in my car...Makes my drive to where ever like an "Escape to Hidden Beach", these are not ordinary remakes from Hip Hop to Smooth Jazz, these songs evolve into a life of their own, artfully combining the Fresh "Funky Jazz and Smooth Hip Hop", especially the two 50 Cent songs and Lean Back, my only complaint was the extra "All Fall Down", song.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-03-31

When Vol.1 came out, I was blown away. Great for listening in the car or ballroom dancing. I was rather disappointed in Vol.'s 2 & 3. I just picked up Vol. 4 and I can't stop playing it. I agree with another reviewer that the vocals aren't as good. Where is Sylveena Johnson on "All Falls Down?" This other chick is weak. But all in all, I am digging the CD. It's especially good if you like 50 or Busta's music but can do without all the foul language.

P.S. Love Mike Phillips, the saxophonist. Check him out on Jill Scott's live album on "The Way You Love Me."

4 out of 5 stars Guru - Jazzmatazz, Vol. 4: The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future.......2007-06-20

Guru (A.K.A. Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, Keith Edward Elam) returns with "Jazzmatazz, Vol. 4: The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future" (2007) a sixteen track release which features guest appearances from Slum Village, Common, Bob James, Damian Marley, Kem, Vivian Green, Raheem DeVaughn, Bobby Valentino, Ronnie Laws, Dionne Farris, Omar, Shelly Harland, Brownman, Blackalicious, Caron Wheeler & David Sanborn. As one half of the groundbreaking group Gangstarr, Guru released many memorable albums, he has also succeeded in delivering memorable solo releases in the Jazzmatazz series. At fourty year's old, Guru is one of the Rap game's veteran's who continues to deliver relevant music, that old and new fans alike can enjoy. This release opens up with "Cuz I'm Jazzy" which has Guru teaming up with T3 & Elzhi of Slum Village. Next up is a highlight track in the single "State of Clarity" - Guru, Common and Bob James (Jazz Keyboards) deliver a substantial track about being true to ones self and avoiding the trife life. Guru tag teams "Stand Up (Some Things'll Never Change) with Damian Marley who provides the chorus. Guru rhymes about change and creating a better future on "Look To The Sun". Guru shines on the introspective "Connection" feat. Kem- delivering more substantial lyrics like "Its so real when it comes from the heart, from deep down inside". Guru flipts the script some and slows things down with "Fine and Free" which features some soulful vocals from Vivian Green, rhyming with confidence - Guru show's his love for Hip Hop and the ladies while repping himself and giving his opinion on sell out MC's. Up and coming soul singer Raheem DeVaughn makes an appearance on "Wait On Me", while Bobby Valentino & Guru travel worldwide on "International". Guru kicks some on point rhymes backed by the sounds of Jazz, Funk & Blues musician Ronnie Laws on "This Is Art". Guru rhymes about a woman whos after him on "Fly Magnetic" backed by some vocals from Dionne Farris, then colloborates with British Singer Omar on "The Jazz Style". Guru takes a trip looking for a special lady on "Follow The Signs" backed by smooth vocals from Shelly Harland. My favourite track at the moment is the deep "The Universal Struggle" feat. Brownman, Guru delivers some excellent lyrics on this conscious track about how people worldwide face the same struggles, talking about showing resilience in the face of danger and overcoming. Guru then collabs with Rap duo Blackalicious on "Infinite" - letting it be known he won't be leaving the game anytime soon and that the music he delivers goes beyond simple rhymes to deep thoughts. Guru provides another international collaboration this time with female British Singer Caron Wheeler (hook) on "Kissed The World" a track about George Bush and the War. Guru closes off the album with "Living Legend" backed by the sounds of Saxophonist David Sanborn. It's refreshing to listen to a grounded MC who has a significant social conscious, and drops positive on point rhymes. "Jazzmatazz, Vol. 4: The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future" is a strong release worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Dim the lights for "Smooth Jazz Volume 4".......2000-09-28

The fourth installment in Warner Bros.' "Best of Smooth Jazz" series lives up to its "For Lovers" subtitle, offering up some of the most romantic ballads in the label's catalog. kd lang crooning the standard "Skylark" over a full orchestra is sheer bliss, ditto for Al Jarreau's timeless pop/soul ballad "After All." The sultry rhythms of Bossa Nova shine on George Benson's chestnut "This Masquerade" and Michael Franks' exquisite "Hourglass," while soul reigns supreme on George Duke's "No Rhyme, No Reason." We're also treated to two superior moments from Fourplay: first Phil Collins sits in on his own composition, the hypnotic "Why Can't it Wait Till Morning" (here presented in a slick radio remix); then Chaka Khan lends her one-of-a-kind pipes to a slow-burn reading of the Isley Brothers hit "Between the Sheets."

The only possible grievance is length: only forty-eight minutes and eleven tracks long, the set feels a little short. Still, with the likes of George Benson, David Sanborn, and Boney James rounding out the album, you can't really argue with quality over quantity.

5 out of 5 stars Get it together, Amazon!.......2006-02-20

Since the all-knowing, all-caring folks at Amazon.com are seemingly refusing to post my review of Volume 3 in this series (I wrote a good review of Volume 3, submitted it, and waited, and waited, and waited. With no results, I wrote another. And waited, and waited, and waited again. Still, nothing.), I'll press on ahead, and, this time, submit a review of Volume 4.

This edition follows the same premise of Volume 1, in that it spans Zappa's whole live career, without any apparent underlying theme. Where Volume 2 is only from the 1974 Helsinki Concert, Volume 3 is focused on the vocal abilities of the 1984 touring band, Volume 5 contrasts the original Mothers Of Invention (1965-1969) with the 1982 touring band, and the first disc of Volume 6 is focused on sexual themes, with the finale (disc two) being odds and ends to wrap it all up, this is a pot-pourri going back to the spring tour of 1969, spanning forward through the 1988 "Broadway The Hard Way" tour. Some real gems are included here, most notably, the '84 band's version of "The Evil Prince." The original, from "Thingfish," features Napoleon Murphy Brock singing this lengthy selection, in a sinister, chilling voice during that particular version of "The Torture Never Stops." I didn't feel there was room for improvement. Ray White sings it here, with the full band accompanying him, a far more complex arrangement than the studio version, and it is to be heard to be believed. Awesome band, contrary to what some detractors may think. The "Pound For A Brown Solos" are flowing with sweet-sounding keyboard arrangements, very nice, "Brown Moses" shows that Zappa hired some fantastic vocalists for his tours, and Disc One ends with the first version of "The Torture Never Stops," from the "Bongo Fury" sessions, Austin, Texas, 1975. This version is signifigantly different from the one everybody's familiar with. It's gritty and bluesy, the 1975 line-up of The Mothers, with Captain Beefheart singing, a perfect vehicle for this particular delivery of this number.

Disc Two begins with Zappa's "sermon" about Hell, and he tells the French audience, "THERE IS NO HELL, THERE IS ONLY...FRANCE!"
This kicks off a lengthy guitar duel between Zappa and Steve Vai, in the song "Stevie's Spanking." This is what live shows used to be made of. Too bad, look at what's out there these days. Things really have gone downhill.

Once again, you are treated to different performances over the years, some really old Mothers gems, "Are You Upset?" having gotten its title from the question Zappa asked a heckler in the audience during the recording of this piece. They lampoon The Doors in "Tiny Sick Tears" with a part of Zappa's monologue being modeled after the Oedipal section of "The End," only here there is no mother, just an embarrassed father. Really tacky, but funny, nonetheless. "Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy" just shines, it is so well done. And the set ends with a medley of old Rock-n-Roll songs from yesteryear. You don't have to like that kind of thing to see just how much fun the band had playing this sequence, and its inclusion is all part of the experience of Frank Zappa on stage. He never limited himself to one genre, and along with Volume 1, this is the most variety you will find in this series.

3 out of 5 stars I don't really like this that much.......2005-10-25

This is songs recorded 1969-1988. Ends with a 50's doo-wop medley recorded in the 80's. Even though this does have a lot of great songs, it's just that I already have most of the popular songs and the verions are not better, some of them are worse. Like "Willie The Pimp", "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama". Those are great but here they kind of suck. Same goes for a lot of the songs. But I really do enjoy "The Torture Never Stops Original Version", "You Call That Music?", "Are You Upset?", "Filthy Habits". There's a problem with "Montana". The first half is from the 1973 Roxy, Hollywood concert, then right after the solo it goes into a lame 1984 performance. Basically this album is full of popular songs with worse than original versions. So I don't really like it that much. But the songs I listed that I like are great.

5 out of 5 stars Better of the series.......2005-08-15

This is one of the best of the six volume series (You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore). This is a 2 CD set. The first is 70 minutes and the second is 63 minutes. The sound quality varies but it is mostly very good to excellent, especially for live recordings.

I like this because much of it I had not heard before in any form. There is also much more variation in the music and the playing. There are some great keyboard and sax solos from other musicians.

This set is just a good compilation of tracks throughout the years. Some of the other volumes concentrate on one band (vol 2 is a complete concert) or period of time.

5 out of 5 stars Blown Away.......2004-03-05

I've listened to tons of Zappa, and seen him many times...this is my favorite so far........too much good here...the playing is awesome...every song is great...if you want to hear the best of Zappa, buy this cd...you will not be disappointed...

4 out of 5 stars Nice job.......2002-02-16

You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore (Part 4) is the fourth in a series of six double CD's that include 26 tracks of live performances. With the exception of "You Call That Music," "Take Me Out To The Ball Game," "Tiny Sick Tears," "Smell My Beard," and "The Booger Man" all of the other tracks can be heard elsewhere. These four, according to the liner noted are unreleased. I particularly enjoyed, "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama." That song - regardless of who does it - brings a smile to my. It reminds me of visiting a girlfriend's house while I was in high school. Nearly 30 years later, it comes back into my mind each time I hear that song. Music brings flashbacks to most people. The CD is good for that.
