A Wonderful Album of Covers by a Very Talented Musician.......2006-09-11

This is perhaps Thea Gilmore's most sensitively sung album and is a collection of covers. She successfully turns the songs upside down and provides her well crafted interpretations and renditions. Creedence Clearwater's "Bad Moon Rising" is fashioned into a haunting folk song with banjo backing and I enjoyed the song as if it were the first time I had heard it. "Ever Fallen in Love" is plaintive and wistful and a radical and improved re-working of the quick tempo Buzzcocks' song. "The Old Laughing Lady" is arguably a better version than that of Neil Young and she slows the pace of the latter version. Phil Ochs' "When I'm Gone" is also sad and wistful, making one aware of the temporality of life. Josef's Train begins with acoustic guitar picking and her laid back voice draws one into the lyrics. It surely will become popular among folk musicians. Her rendition of this song is simply awesome and worth the price of the CD on its own. The singing on this CD packs a powerful musical punch. It also reveals Thea Gilmore's ability to vary the type of songs she plays, which is different to the music from previous CDs, such as "Rules for Jokers" and "Avalanche." "Loft Music" is a brilliant CD by a highly talented musician.

I was listening to The Loft station on my XM Satellite radio yesterday in the midst of an interview program featuring Thea Gilmore and songs from her album Loft Music. An interesting thing happened. I became just as enthralled with hearing her answering the questions as I was hearing her perform such songs as her inimitable cover of Bad Moon Rising.Thea is a charming and charasmatic performer and personality. I love acoustic material like her's as featured on the Loft because it has that folk rock flavor that is becoming so popular now. I recommend this album Loft Music and urge you to follow the career of up and coming Thea Gilmore, she will be the one to get even better as we go along. Jay Adler, Massapequa, NY

Great fun songs of faith.......2007-07-07

This CD contains some of my favorite music and is a must-have for anybody remotely interested in religious music. The songs are energetic and the fun is contagious. These songs are from the early 90s but are just as good now as they were then. This is an extroverted, sunny vision of Christianity, which is the way I like it. Anything Amy Grant touches is worth acquiring, of course, but these songs really make you want to join in, clap, and sing.

My brother sister and I listened to Songs from the Loft constantly when we were little. We had it on tape and we would listen nonstop in the car-it was a great variety of fun Christian music to listen to.

American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

Groovy, Funky, and Fresh.......2006-08-10

I was hesitant when I picked up this album not knowing anything about kinkysweet records but the title San Fransisco convinced me that it was sure to have some groovy stylish tracks. I was very pleased with the first CD but some of the spanish tainted tracks had me skippen. The second CD was even better, its one that you can groove to without skipping a track! This CD has it's own culture and "cosmopolitan lover" vibe, hippie like sound effects, it's different from your average house CD; I love this CD; I play whenever I cruise through LA before the start of some nightlife.

I like it. This collection has all the elements that I've come to appreciate from kinkysweet-funky, soulful, driving. I found disc 1 to be very satisfying but disc 2 much less so. I found the first track on disc 2 to be borderline embarrasing and not just because it's a butchery of one of my favorite Beatles songs either. It's just not good, and the rest of the disc doesn't recover quickly enough for me to give this 2 disc collection more than 3 stars. But because I liked the first disc so much, can we make it a VERY STRONG 3 stars? Come on, kinkysweet. I know you can do better. I know because you have.

All of Buxtehude's most popular organ works in one definitive recording! This first of three double CDs of the complete organ works of Buxtehude celebrates the 300th anniversary of Buxtehude's death. Volume one focuses on Buxtehude's best-known works. Recent research shows that Buxtehude had only mean-tone organs at his disposal during his life. Although there are many good recordings on well-tempered organs (including some antiques), performing these works on mean-tone instruments requires both a radical re-assessment of traditional performance ideas and a large and extraordinary organ. Hans Davidsson is the ideal performer for this task, and he plays the huge "North German Baroque Organ" of Gothenburg, Sweden (pictured on the CD cover). Hans Davidsson is simultaneously Professor of Music at the Eastman School and the North German Organ Academy. I'm not sure what makes the other reviewers say good things about this album, making me buy it. This CD is terrible, boring, and depressing. Voice is ok, but the songs are not worth listening to. Check out Karla Bonoff instead.

The only thing better than listening to rachael on an album is listening to her live; and this album catches rachael's mesmerizingly eccentric oh so beautiful voice. what more can i say?
