a perfect distillation of more recent, ADHD deerhoof, and with a total runtime of ~20 minutes, it's perfect for ritalin-poppers everywhere. Most of the tracks cover familiar territory, but the EP's majestic centerpiece Spiral Golden Town injects a bollywood-esque foundation with extracts of cyndi lauper to reach new heights of gorgeous, semi-ridiculous songcrafting. absolutely essential.

There's another side to Deerhoof...........2005-11-09

This EP is one that is, for reasons unbeknownst to me, often overlooked. But, to put it simply, you need this in your collection. Deerhoof explore a totally different side of themselves in the songs on this EP. It is, to say the least, an amazing work full of etremely poignant and beautiful songs (in their own unique way)... Fans of CIBO MATTO will love this.

i have NO idea why no one has reviewed this yet.... its a side of deerhoof that we dont really see, but an interesting side.... although only an ep, its enough songs to make an epic.

all songs are good, different in their own way, but the best one by far is spiral golden town. i dont know what it is, but that song really got me.... order and listen for yourself!

what an amazing AMAZING EP, PLEASE (!!!) dont skip this from your collection.... because i can guarantee you, its well worthy.

while i relaly like both of these artists, this cd did not do much for me. it didnt go anywhere. it was very boring. for me it falls into the group of experimental cds that would be fun to play, but nto relaly fun to listen to.

stick to these guys other works.

Halfbird gets full credit.......2007-07-13

While Runners Four is arguably Deerhoof's most impressive and probably my favorite (at the moment anyway)release. Halfbird's genious seems overlooked, at least by the other reviewer. Are we so conditioned that we consciously reject recorded music that wasn't produced in a state-of-the-art studio with constant overdubs? This album was supposedly recorded on a four track cassette recorder. This may be a sonic turn off to some but it actually creates a dreamy, unsettling world that could only be narrated by Satomi (check out the creepy/beautiful track Queen Orca Wicca Wind). These sounds could never have been attained using the crystal clear recording methods so frequently utilized in the music industry today. Halfbird is the marriage of Deerhoof's honed sense of melody and their urge to create jarring noise. Listen to Red Dragon and tell me if you've heard a prettier song...Listen to Trickybird and tell me you don't want to bang your head like you're 16 years old again. Basically we should all be open to mistakes and grittyness of life and incorporated into our artistic tastes. Just open your minds like a flower in the morning and it will only hurt a little.

not on my top Deerhoof list............2007-06-06

If you're going to give Deerhoof a listen. I would put Apple O', Runner's four and Friend Opportunity(#1) Friend OpportunityThe Runners FourApple O'choice. There are 3 of their most mature and accessible releases and at the top of my listen to Deerhoof list. Milkman and Halfbird last on this list. I have not heard any of their other older releases but if Halfbird and Milkman are indicators I'll pass on those as well.

musique concrete, dub, noise... whatever, this is wigmaker. the product of many, many years work (and wait for all of us chiluns)... during which our man om myth went through a divorce and a brief stint as ringleader of several LSD consuming yakuza bike gangs all leading to the completion of this epic psycho-sexual song of solomon fellini nightmare. perfect from start to finish.

one of the only pieces of music that never, no matter how many spins, fails to melt my mind.

But they're so nice!.......2004-08-21

I saw them in moscow, and the first thing impressed me was their ability to drink vodka just as good as any of the good russian drinkers I know :) (later I was surprised to see lots of other englishmen having problems with swallowing Smirnoff)
But putting their drinking abilities aside, the music is great! It's energizing, funny, lyrical (yes, funny and lyrical) and... nasty, but irresistably charming.
The closest thing that came to my mind is the Fun Lovin Criminals' song 'Big Night Out', but MP are a bit more cajun and (!!!) more english, english as I love it.
I have their russian edition cd, which I think is better than thins one, but this one is good too, although it misses some songs.

A True Original.......2002-12-19

Smokin'! This London based band, driven by Philadelphia export, frontman Chris Taylor, do justice to their now legendary live performances, or rather, must see 'events'.

Every cut seems to out do the previous in terms of originality, energy and sheer genius.

For anyone who has seen this band perform live, which I had the pleasure of doing last Friday at the Union Chapel in Islington, London, the listening experience takes on a huge new dimension. The diversity of the musicians, all of whom change instruments at least four times during the set is astounding. Yet attempting to put a label on the style is almost impossible. The underlying thread is country, but this 'ain't no country band'. Menlo Park is as edgy and unique a group as the music industry can muster. Seek them out and watch. This is something you'll be proud to tell everyone you found 'in the early days', but you'd better do it now, because you don't have much time. They're moving too fast!

Also look for two newer EP releases, 'Greetings from Montauk', and 'Greetings from Lambeth' both part of a series of musical postcards, all new music on both, check www.[a website].co.uk for details on where to buy.
